In the early days of the University of Paris the discipline of the students, and indeed their entire education fell under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Paris who was responsible for local educational matters. In an attempt to perform his office, the Bishop claimed supervision of curriculum and degree- granting. Here he ran into trouble from the teachers who felt they were the proper judges of the qualifications of their students. They demanded the right to grant the degree. White-Arts, Letters, Humanities Silver Beige-Business The modern commencement ceremony represents a compromise between the Bishop and the teaching masters. By 1200 the masters were judging the merits of the student and then recommending him to the Bishop who conferred the degree. The ceremony you will witness this morning is the successor to this medieval compromise. The Faculty sits on the platform in its role as teacher and examiner. Its leaders, the Deans, present the qualified candidates to the Chancellor. Acting upon the recommendation of the Faculty, the Chancellor, as executive officer of the Board of Trustees, formally confers the appropriate degree. These banners are DREss carried by a student marshal at the head of the procession for their division. You will note that the side sections of the banners are red and green, the University's colors, and that the center section, which bears the seal of the University, is the color of the academic division. ~e academic dress worn by Faculty and candidates indicates the degree held, the subject in which it is held, and the institution granting it. Hirsh, Mallinckrodt Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Audiology Emeritus, has been one of Washington University's most distinguished citizens for more than forty years. Even in putative retirement, he provides exceptional leadership as Director of the Central Institute for the Deaf. An undergraduate at the New York State College for Teachers (now SUNY, Albany), Professor Hirsh began his study of the audiology at Northwestern University. Following military service in World War II, He resumed his studies, completing his Ph.D. in Psychology at Harvard University in 1948. In 1951 he joined the Central Institute for the Deaf, becoming its Director of Research in 1965 and continuing in that role until1983. His more notable University leadership includes serving as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (1969-1973) and Chair of the Department of Psychology (1983-1987). The Measurement ofHearing (1952), Professor Hirsh's classic study, brought him international acclaim. He has served as Visiting Research Professor at the University of Paris and as Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. Some 130 articles on his research interests in binaural hearing, speech perception, effects of noise and temporal aspects in auditory perception have appeared in professional journals. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, professor Hirsh holds the Whetnall Medal of the Royal Society of Medicine and recently received the Gold Medal of the Acoustical Society of America. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of the American Psychological Association, of the American Speech and Hearing Association, and of the Acoustical Society of America of which is has also been President. He has also served two terms as Chair of the _ ational Research Council's Commission on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education. 6 HoNORARY DEGREES RUSSELL LINCOLN ACKOFF students learn in the classroom is incompatible with the world in which they eventually have to earn a living. He believes that the educational system spends most of its time conveying information and knowledge and too little time conveying in-depth understanding. At Washington University, Dr. Ackoff has met with the Olin School's faculty regarding curricular and research issues, led management seminars with business students and interacted with alumni and the business community. His recommendations have had substantial influence on Olin's mission as a business school, particularly on the direction of Olin and its dean. Dr. Ackoffs interests and involvement in Washington University have extended well beyond the Olin School to consultation with members of the central administration and with the Committee to Prepare for the 21st Century. DocToR oF SciENCE ussell L. Ackoff, Ph.D. , professor emeritus of management science at Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, is a giant in management education and a pioneer of the field of management science. A world leader in the early development of operations research, Dr. Ackoff has written or co-authored 19 books and more than 150 academic journal articles. His views on executive development, strategy, organization and other management issues have made him widely sought after as a lecturer and consultant. He has conducted research for more than 300 corporations and government agencies, including notable projects for the U.S. Bureau of Census. Since 1989, Dr. Ackoff has served as the first August A. Busch, Jr., Distinguished Professor in the John M. Olin School of Business at Washington University. His contributions to management thought on planning, strategy, systems theory, organization and the future of corporations are substantial. He began his academic career with a bachelor's degree in architecture and a doctorate in the philosophy of science from the University of Pennsylvania. As a student in the 1940s, he became intrigued by the notion that philosophy is more than an intellectual exercise -ideas and abstractions should be coupled with the conceptual tools of scientific disciplines to solve difficult social and business problems. His interests in "applied philosophy" soon led him to the emerging field of operations research, a systematic approach to problem-solving developed for wartime technical projects. Throughout the 1950s, Dr. Ackoff and his colleagues were world leaders in the development of operations research methods. While on the faculty at Wayne State University in Detroit, the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, he also directed the work of more than 200 doctoral students, many of whom are now teaching at universities throughout the world. His relationship with St. Louis dates to 1959, when he began his 30-year consulting relationship with Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. In an essay on this consulting role, August A. Busch III describes Dr. Ackoff as "an advisor, a mentor, and a friend" who has had a "profound and positive" influence on Anheuser-Busch. He credits Ackoff with important contributions to company programs in the areas of logistics, corporate planning, marketing, advertising, and environmental issues such as litter prevention. Since 1986, Dr. Ackoff has been chairman of the board and chief executive officer of INTERACT: The Institute of Interactive Management. He has consulted and conducted studies with many organizations, including the Aluminum Company of America; Anheuser-Busch; Central Life Assurance Co.; CertainTeed Corp.; Digital Equipment Corp.; Eastman Kodak Co.; and Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. INTERACT works with these companies to improve performance in such areas as marketing, product development, planning, humanization of the workplace and design of joint ventures. Drawing on his expertise in systems theory, Dr. Ackoff is a frequent critic of the educational system. He contends that much of what R STANLEY COHEN DocToR oF SciENCE s a graduate student in the late 1940s, Stanley Cohen, Ph.D., spent his evenings collecting eatthworms A some 5,000 of them. Today, the Nobel Prize winner's research has led to a better understanding of many diseases, including the processes governing the growth of tumors and developmental malformations, degenerative changes in senile dementia and delays in wound healing. Dr. Cohen jointly won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986 with Rita Levi-Montalcini, M.D., for pioneering work in nerve cell biology that dated back more than 30 years. Dr. Levi-Montalcini is currently professor emerita of biology at Washington University. Dr. Cohen came to Washington University in 1952 to work in the Department of Radiology as a postdoctoral fellow of the American Cancer Society, following teaching positions at the University of Michigan and the University of Colorado School of Medicine. A year later, he became an associate professor in Washington's zoology -now biology - department, where he began conducting research with Dr. Levi-Montalcini. Both Dr. Cohen and Dr. Levi-Montalcini worked under the leadership of the distinguished chair of the zoology department, Viktor Hamburger, Ph.D., who today is the Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biology. At the time Dr. Cohen joined the department, Dr. Levi-Montalcini already had discovered the existence of a biologically active protein that stimulated nerve growth, which she named nerve growth factor (NGF). In 1954 Dr. Cohen and Dr. Levi-Montalcini succeeded in isolating NGF in such sources as salivary glands of male mice, snake venom and mouse tumors. Dr. Cohen remained at Washington University until 1959, when he accepted a position as an assistant professor of biochemistry at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He continued his research there, discovering the epidermal growth factor (EGF), a protein that stimulates the growth of epidermal cells, which make up the outer layers of the skin and other organs. Dr. Cohen's discoveries have been extremely valuable in understanding the fundamental growth activi- 7 ties of cells. Study of EGF also has been beneficial in understanding how cells grow normally and how their abnormal growth causes diseases such as cancer and muscular dystrophy and the delayed healing of wounds. Epidermal growth factor even has been used experimentally to produce skinlike sheets of cells to treat burn victims. Today Dr. Cohen is Distinguished Professor at Vanderbilt. The son of Russian Jewish emigrants, Dr. Cohen is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. He received a bachelor of science degree in both chemistry and zoology from Brooklyn College. There, he became interested in cell biology and embryonic development. He received a master's degree in zoology from Oberlin College and his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Michigan. Dr. Cohen, who has published more than 120 articles and papers, is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among Dr. Cohen's numerous other honors are: the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award from the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, the 1986 National Medal of Science, the Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society Research Professor of Biochemistry, the H.P. Robertson Memorial Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the Alfred P. Sloan Award from the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation and the Gairdner Foundation International Award. He is a member of the American Society of Biological Chemists, the International Institute of Embryology, and an honorary member of the International Council for Scientific Development, International Academy of Science. He also is a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors NICHD and serves on the editorial boards of Excerpta Medica, "Abstracts of Human Development Biology," and the Journal of Cellular Physiology. the Lopata scholarships in Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Fine Arts; as well as construction of engineering's Lopata Hall and the Lopata Courtyard in the John M. Olin School of Business. The University's annual fall invitational basketball tournament, the Lopata Classic, commemorates the couple's active support of athletics and student activities. Mr. Lopata received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University in 1935 and went on to do graduate work at Columbia University in New York. He worked as an engineer and then as a sales representative for Duriron Company, a manufacturer of corrosionresistant equipment. As a sideline, in 1944 he set up a laboratory in the basement of his aunt's house- his was too small - to begin manufacture of his own chemical coating products. This led to the formation of Carboline Company in 1946. During the next decade, Carboline built a reputation for "solving (corrosion) problems that other companies can't solve." Mr. Lopata developed a patented primer that made it possible to put a vinyl coating on steel surfaces without first sandblasting the steel. By 1979, when Carboline was sold to Sun Oil, the corporation had developed either joint ventures or licensees in Italy, France, United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Canada, Mexico , Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. When Mr. Lopata ended his relationship with Carboline in 1986, it was the largest corrosionresistant coating company in the world. The primary reason for the company's incredible growth, according to Mr. Lopata, was "the people that made the company; they came, enjoyed working here and stayed and developed the products that made the company grow. It was the emphasis on people that encouraged enthusiasm and loyalty and that's an unbeatable combination." This philosophy carried over into Mr. Lopata's personal life as well. He and his wife believe it is important to be donors of time as well as money. In addition to their exceptional generosity to Washington University, the Lopatas have consistently supported other local institutions, including the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Att Museum, Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis Science Center, Holocaust Memorial, St. Louis Repertory Theatre and St. Louis Symphony. Mr. Lopata has been an active volunteer and fund-raiser for the United Way of Greater St. Louis, the American Cancer Society, the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the American Society for Technion University-Israel. His many awards from the University include the Founders Day Distinguished Alumni Award, Engineering Alumni Achievement Award, William Greenleaf Eliot Society "Search" Award and the Alliance Appreciation Award. The National Association of Chemical Engineers also has honored Mr. Lopata with its prestigious Frank Newman Speller award. STANLEY L. LOPATA DocToR oF LAws tanley Lopata was halfway toward an undergraduate S degree in liberal arts at Washington University when he suddenly realized that he really wanted to study L. chemical engineering. At the time- the early 1930sUniversity rules made it difficult to make such a drastic academic change. However, the School of Engineering and Applied Science decided to admit Lopata. He has generously shown his appreciation ever since. The son of a Russian emigrant and a native St. Louisan, Mr. Lopata started a company in a makeshift basement lab and built it into a $46 million-a-year-business. I owe this University a debt of gratitude," Mr. Lopata once said. "It's a debt you never get over. " His generosity and active concern that students today receive the same excellent education that he did have made a difference in virtually every area of the University. Elected chairman of the University's Alumni Board of Governors in 1975, Mr. Lopata, president of Lopata Research and Development, has served as an outstanding trustee of the University since 1979. He and his wife, Lucy, rank among the University's most generous benefactors. The Lopatas have provided scholarships for students and support for faculty throughout the University. Their significant contributions include establishing the Lopata Professorship in the School of Engineering and SYBIL COLLINS MOBLEY DocToR oF HuMANE LETTERs nder the leadership of Sybil Collins Mobley, Ph.D. , the U School of Business and Industry (SBI) at Florida A&M University is blazing a trail for young African-Americans to succeed in the business world. Since she became dean of the innovative school in 1974, Dr. Mobley has upgraded its 8 academic standing with a curriculum designed to fully prepare students for business careers. In a 1982 Newsweek interview Dr. Mobley said, "We went to firms and asked, 'What is it you're not satisfied with in college graduates?"' She said the companies' unanimous responses were that, while college students could meet the technical requirements of entry-level positions, they lacked the discipline and aggressiveness needed for "superior achievement. " In response to the comments, Dr. Mobley then created a curriculum that features a traditional emphasis on accounting, math and economics, and supplemented it with an internship program and a professional development plan that encourages students to interact with business executives in varied situations. As part of the school's professional development plan, students stage weekly forums for visiting executives. The students also are divided into teams functioning as miniature corporations and are assigned to programs intended to enhance their communications skills. Dr. Mobley's work has paid off. SBI, located in Tallahassee, has received national attention as a premier program whose students rank in the top 3 to 5 percent nationally, whose total development program is one of the most demanding in the nation, and whose graduates are among the most actively recruited. Articles about the school have appeared in Fortune magazine and Tbe New York Times. In the Times article, which has been reprinted in more than 100 newspapers across the country, writer Peter T. Kilborn asserts that SBI's unique curriculum is one "that some major American companies say the top business schools would do well to emulate." In 1963 Dr. Mobley joined Florida A&M, a predominantly AfricanAmerican institution, as an assistant professor in the business department, which was then part of the university's liberal arts college. The department was upgraded to a school in 1974 and Dr. Mobley was named dean. Called an extraordinary promoter and scholar by business leaders, Dr. Mobley sits on the board of several major corporations, including Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., Champion International Corp. , Hershey Foods Corp., Sears, Roebuck and Co. , and Southwestern Bell Corp. Dr. Mobley, who also has taught accounting at SBI, has a bachelor's degree in sociology and economics from Bishop College, an M.B.A. in accounting from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in accounting from the University of Illinois. A certified public accountant in the state of Florida, she has contributed her expertise as a board member of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, the National Association of Accountants for the Public Interest, the International Association of Black Business Educators and the Committee for Economic Development. She additionally has served as vice president of both the American Accounting Association and the American Institute of CPAs. Dr. Mobley has published several articles in accounting journals and through her writings has addressed the role of women in the accounting profession. Her career also includes serving as a special consultant for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Senegal, Nigeria, Zaire and Kenya, Africa. As a team leader, she also provided USAID consultant services to industrialists in Cameroon and Liberia, Africa. A frequent speaker at universities and national meetings of profes- sional societies, Dr. Mobley is the recipient of the Robert Russa Moten Leadership Award from the National Business League and the University of Illinois Distinguished Alumni Award. She has received honorary doctorates from Babson, Bishop and Hamilton colleges and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. JOSEPH PULITZER, JR. DocTOR oF LAws oseph Pulitzer, _Jr. , cha~ri?a~ of the Pulitzer Publishing Company and 1ts subs1d1anes, heads one of the nation's oremost family publishing empires. His family's journalistic roots date back to his grandfather, Joseph Pulitzer, who first worked as a reporter in 1868 for St. Louis' Germanlanguage daily, the Westliche Post. His grandfather went on to buy that paper, the first of many media holdings under the Pulitzer name. Today, the Pulitzer Publishing Company's holdings include its flagship , the St. Louis PostDispatch, two other daily newspapers and nine television network affiliates. Mr. Pulitzer received a bachelor's degree from Harvard University. He learned the nuts and bolts of the newspaper business in the offices of the Post-Dispatch, where he sta1ted as a reporter in 1936 after a stint at the now-defunct San Francisco News. In 1948, he became the paper's associate editor, a post he held until 1955 when he was named editor and publisher. In 1986, he assumed the position of chairman, a post he still holds. In addition to continuing his family's legacy in newspapers, Mr. Pulitzer served as chairman of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1955 to 1986. Founded in 1916 by Mr. Pulitzer's grandfather, the Pulitzer Prize is the most prestigious award for distinguished American arts and letters. In 1987, he received a special citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board for extraordinary services to American journalism and letters during his 31 years as chairman of the board. The award also cited his accomplishments as an editor and publisher. Mr. Pulitzer is an avid supporter of the arts and has one of the finest modem art collections in the country, with works by Monet, Picasso, Braque, Kelly and Serra. His personal collection of 19th- and 20th-century art was catalogued by Harvard University in four volumes. The volumes also contain a number of essays and commentaries on the arts written by Mr. Pulitzer. His service to the arts includes serving as honorary trustee of the St. Louis Art Museum, as well as a member of the museum's collections committee. He was commissioner of the museum from 1972 to 1980. He has been involved in the St. Louis Symphony in a number of capacities, having served on its board of trustees and executive committee. He currently serves as chairman of the symphony's music committee and on the community outreach committee. Mr. Pulitzer served as a member of Washington University's Library National Council from 1987 to 1991 and on the University's Committee for the Arts from 1968 to 1971. For his service to the arts, he has received several honors, including the 1993 Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis' Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award and the 1982 St. Louis Art Museum's Beaux Arts Council Award. Though Mr. Pulitzer is clearly one of St. Louis' most active members of the arts community, he once said in an interview that he never 1 9 performing in an Off Broadway cabaret version of the show, which also featured Belushi and Gilda Radner. In 1977 Mr. Ramis joined the SCTV series, a program that is taped in Canada and has been a springboard for such comedy standouts as John Candy, Rick Moranis, Martin Short and others. By this time Mr. Ramis already was working on his first film project, "Animal House," with Matty Simmons, who owned the National Lampoon magazine. "We were so arrogant," Mr. Ramis recalls of his and Simmons' expectations of the movie. "We thought we were going to be the biggest comedy in history. It was really a delusion. " But, of course, that was in a sense w hat happened. "Animal House's" success in 1978 made toga parties and food fights national fads and set the style for numerous comedy movies. That success launched Mr. Ramis' Hollywood career. His projects since tl1en "form a nearly complete list of the major comedy box office successes of the last two decades, " wrote the Chicago Tribune in a January 1993 article. The list includes "Meatballs," "Caddyshack," "Stripes," "National Lampoon's Vacation," "Ghostbusters," "Back to School," "Armed and Dangerous," "Baby Boom," "Stealing Home," "Ghostbusters II, " and "Groundhog Day. " allowed his love for the atts to influence coverage at the Post-Dispatch. "I have been able to divide myself clearly between my vocation and my avocation," he said. "I have been very scrupulous about not having my personal interest in art infringe on the paper's positions." Commenting on his support for the city's arts, Mr. Pulitzer has said, "Fine cultural institutions are the mark of any urban, civilized community." HAROLD ALLEN RAMIS DocToR oF ARTS ot everyone can proudly mention an honorary degree from Washington University in a conversation with Jay N Leno on "The Tonight Show." But that's just what Harold Ramis, A.B. '66, producer, screenwriter, director and actor, did on a recent show. Since his graduation from Washington University, Mr. Ramis has been involved in more than a dozen movies in his 25-year career. He is probably best known for "Animal House" and "Ghostbusters" - both major box office successes. His most recent, "Groundhog Day," a comedy in which he served as director, co-writer, co-producer and bit actor, was the top-grossing movie during its four-day weekend debut last February, and made $43.4 million in its first month. In spite of his numerous professional commitments, Mr. Ramis maintains strong ties to his alma mater. A recipient of a Proctor & Gamble scholarship to attend Washington University, Mr. Ramis has been a longtime supporter of the Arts and Sciences scholarship program. In 1984 he was asked by the students to be the Grand Marshal in the homecoming parade. Both he and his daughter, Violet, now 16, led the parade and participated in other homecoming events with enthusiasm. In 1988 Mr. Ramis received a distinguished alumnus award from the University, and he has returned to campus several times to speak to students, most recently in 1990 when he was the keynote speaker at the Arts and Sciences Scholarship Dinner. In a 1989 Washington University Magazine article, Mr. Ramis says that no one he grew up with in Chicago believed a career in show business was possible, "but I was launched from college at a good time: the late 1960s. Everyone was taking chances, no one knew what the next year would bring ... Everything seemed up for grabs, and it was a good time to attempt a Bohemian lifestyle. I don't know if it would have been so easy two years before or even five years later. " Soon after graduating with a degree in English literature he headed to San Francisco, where he experienced that Bohemian living for a summer. He eventually ended up back in the Midwest, and following a two-year stint at Playboy Magazine, Mr. Ramis hooked up with the Second City comedy group in Chicago, incubator for many household names in comedy, including the late John Belushi and Brian Doyle-Murray, actor Bill Murray's older brother. Through Doyle-Murray, Mr. Ramis began a friendship with Bill Murray that has resulted in six professional collaborations. "Bill and I both need to feel that what we're doing is important," said Mr. Ramis of their collaborations. "We're talking about quality and the fact that it's always fun to work at the top of your intelligence. " Mr. Ramis received more training in comedy with the National Lampoon Radio Hour, touring with that show and PETIR H. RAVEN DocToR oF SciENCE eter H. Raven, Ph.D., has been called one of the most coherent thinkers in biological science. Dr. Raven is an impassioned advocate for the preservation of biological diversity who "wields details like a sword" in making his case for saving the world's tropical rainforests and other endangered animal and plant habitats. His unusual combination of drive and humanity give him "an influence far beyond his job." As director of the Missouri Botanical Garden and Engelmann Professor of Botany at Washington University, Dr. Raven has developed the garden's scientific program into one of the world's most active for studying tropical plants. At age five the California native was collecting plants and butterflies in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park; at nine he was already a student member of the California Academy of Sciences. Dr. Raven earned his doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1960 after completing his undergraduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. He holds honorary degrees from several universities, including the Universities of Massachusetts and Goteborg, Sweden, as well as Rutgers and Leiden Universities. Dr. Raven is Home Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Report Review Committee of the National Research Council, and a member of the National Science Board. In March 1993, Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt recruited Dr. Raven and Thomas E. Lovejoy of the Smithsonian Institution to help set up a national biological survey to map the country's ecosystems and biological diversity. Dr. Raven will head a National Academy of Sciences committee that will offer advice on organizing the survey, which is being compared to the U.S. Geological Survey initiated over a century ago. In 1986, he received the International Prize for Biology from the government of Japan, in 1990 shared with E.O. Wilson the Prize of the Institut de la Vie in Paris, and in 1992 shared with Norman P 10 Myers the Volvo Environment Prize in Sweden. From 1985 to 1990 he was a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellow. Before coming to St. Louis in 1971, Dr. Raven was a member of the Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University. He spent the academic year 1969-1970 in New Zealand as a Guggenheim fellow. He is past president of a number of groups, including the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the Organization for Tropical Studies, and the Botanical Society of America, and also served as a member of the National Museum Services Board. Dr. Raven is a member of the Committee on Research and Exploration of the National Geographic Society. He is the author of more than 450 scientific papers and 18 books, including textbooks in biology and botany. In his continuing crusade to maintain what's left of the Earth's biodiversity, Dr. Raven warns that worldwide "some 50,000 plants may vanish during the next 30 years or so, out of a world total of 250,000. Most of them will never have been examined in detail. With such riches within our grasp, it seems all but inconceivable that we are not taking steps to secure them while they are still here." Dr. Raven concludes: "The kind of world that our descendants will inhabit a few decades from now will depend directly on the actions we decide to take now. " 11 FIFIHIETI-I CLASS OF Claude A. Ground for a new site on the edge of the city was purchased in 1894 and in 1900 construction was begun on the first five buildings of a plan based upon the medieval courtyards of Oxford and Cambridge Colleges. These first ivy covered Gothic buildings with their red granite walls, arches and gargoyles formed the quadrangle. Upon completion, these original buildings were leased to the 1904 World's Fair. The lease money made it possible to begin construction of additional buildings and all were used for the Fair before the University moved in. The athletic stadium, Francis Field, was build to accommodate the 1904 Olympic games, presented in conjunction with the Fair. Over the years, theoriginal "Academic Gothic" architecture has been succeeded by a variety of eclectic styles, but certain key principles of the original plan were retained. Plazas and courtyards still reflect the original theme. 52 A B c F D G J K ~Washington WASHINCJia.J · IVERSITY· IN ·SHDUIS 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 6 7 7 4-8 * W Blue Light Emergency ® Handicapped Entrance 4) Handicapped Parking Phones 9 Visitor Parking Washington University Hilltop Campus ® Permit Parking 10 11 12 13 14 15 1.
