CHAIRMANS REPORT – 2012
Rugby at HOBM proved to be a game of two halves this season. The first half delivered
outstanding results on the field; Spillane Cup 3-peat, the inaugural Bondy Cup, Wood Cup and
McBain Shield amongst others and then finally the Swindale Shield for 1st Round supremacy, a
trophy we hadn’t won since 1997. Teams other than the Premiers also performed admirably,
notably the Senior 2nds, Colts, Howlers, and Senior 3rds which all had significantly more wins
than losses. One could easily have been lulled into a false sense of security.
Unfortunately the 2nd Round proved that we still have a wee way to go if we want to become the
marquee club in Wellington rugby. The Premiers failed to continue their scintillating form from
the first round and came unstuck in the mud against MSP at Kilbirnie Park and then losses to
Ories and Norths left us fighting for a place in the Semis. A draw against otherwise easy-beats
Petone was also a setback. However the team rallied and finished the season in style and only
an upset win by Wainui over Norths in the final game prevented us from contesting the semi
finals.
The most disappointing aspects of the season however had to be the failure to field two age
grade sides for the first time in many seasons and the demotion of our Senior 1st side which
finished 8th in the first round and continued to lose momentum towards the latter part of the
season and failed to win the last game against OBU which was a do-or-die match for both. There
are numerous contributing factors and selection policies formed a significant component. The
Rugby Sub-Committee will be working to address these issues to ensure that our second team
gains promotion next season.
In other grades our Senior 2nds won the 2nd round H D Morgan Trophy after coming a close
second last season, the Senior 3rds had an outstanding year on the field but too many
disciplinary problems resulted in lost points and they failed to secure any silverware. The
Howlers competed in the semi final of the first division after winning the third division last season
and showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in the 85/85 Grade in the future. The Colts
also made the top 6 in their grade and there are a number in the side who will easily make the
transition to Premier in the next few seasons.
On the coaching front we had new blood this year through the addition of Brett Marais, Aturo
Kamuta, Luti Lologa, Daniel Burns to the coaching ranks and Adrian Maney also returned to the
fold. It was great to have these guys on board and they all added significant value to the club
and the teams they worked with. To all the other coaches and managers who made sure first
that we could actually field reams and secondly to have them run efficiently, thank you for your
huge contribution of time.
In 2012 the club continued to invest in the future with the complete re-fit of the upstairs
gymnasium including new cross-fit equipment and rubber matting and installation of fingerprint
access security system and a monitored security camera. My thanks to Danny Pavihi and Mark
Fraser for their assistance in completing this project. The club has also received a legacy from
the late Rex Bird and we will be using these funds towards the landscaping project planned for
the Myrtle Street frontage, incorporating new decking and BBQ area. The players commenced
this work by knocking down the old brick ticket box and are looking forward in contributing more
labour towards getting this project completed. This is what club spirit is all about.
The club is currently engaging with the Council on the feasibility of the installation of an allweather training area at the Hutt Rec. The continual failure of our number two and three fields to
stand up to any periods of prolonged wet weather has resulted in cancellations and ground
changes affecting training and playing at all levels of the game, and as much for the Junior Club
as the Senior teams. Our vision is that this facility would provide a training venue across a wide
variety of codes at college level, our Senior and Junior rugby training and also night games for
Junior teams. All of this would take the pressure off our current training areas and grounds on
Saturday mornings. This project will cost between $800,000 and $1,300,000 so it is a massive
undertaking for the Club and we will be required to raise a considerable sum towards the project.
We have also asked the Council to carry out drainage works on each of the other fields to make
them more durable. At a cost of $80,000 per field this is not a small investment. So if you
happen to be talking to our Councillors – put in a plug for these projects!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee for their unstinting efforts this season.
Particularly Kevin Melville and Peter McGuinness for their outstanding efforts around
sponsorship, Jim McMenamin for his secretarial work and for generally keeping things organized
and Phil Gibb for his stewardship of the Rugby Sub Committee. Without a strong committee it is
difficult for any club to operate effectively. We are very fortunate in the calibre of our committee.
Also finally we bid farewell to Filipe Rayasi, who for over 5 years has been the Club’s CCO.
Filipe has decided it is time for new challenges and has chosen not to apply for re-appointment.
It is patently obvious that the club’s successes over the past few years and Filipe’s presence here
are interlinked and Filipe leaves here having made a huge contribution to the Club and having
made many friendships amongst players, committee and within the general community. We wish
Filipe, Lani and family all the best for the future.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT 2012
The high hopes held for the club at the beginning of 2012 were, unfortunately, only partially
realised as the competitions in the various grades progressed during the year. On the back of
some very good performances by most of our teams in 2011 it was anticipated that that
momentum would continue. Our expectations were that this would be a great year on the field for
Hutt Old Boys Marist.
The season began well. The high numbers of players that we had seen in recent years again
turned up for the preseason training programme. However these numbers did not materialise into
the players registering in the way they had done the previous year. When the competition began
our numbers had dwindled.
We knew that in the Under 85 grade we had already lost the Robots. The coach of the team for
the last few years had decided he wasn’t able to do it again and the consequence of this was that
the team dispersed to other clubs. What wasn’t expected was the loss of the Under 19 team - a
grade that we had traditionally done very well in. Preseason indications were that we would easily
have two age grade teams. Unfortunately, due to the lack of preseason availability of coaches
these players also drifted away. The consequence of this was that from 9 teams the club fielded
in 2011 this year we could only register 7.
Fortunately for us, it was the best players who remained. This was evident in the results of some
of early noncompetition games. When our club went to the Spillane in New Plymouth our
suspicions were vindicated. The Colts played well and the Premiers retained this coveted trophy.
The coaching changes at the Premier level with Justin Wilson coming in to replace Adam
Campbell proved to have been a good decision.
The first round of the season suggested that this was to be a successful year for the club. The
Premier team particularly showed some of the excellent form that we thought would be good
enough for it to dominate this year’s senior competition. After having won all the inter-club cups
and shields, including the highly sought after McBain Shield, the team went on to take out the
Swindale Shield for the first time for many years. Other teams faired reasonably well and there
was great hope going into the second round.
The second round was to be seen in stark contrast to what had come before. With the exception
of the Senior 2 team which went on to win the HD Memorial Cup, for various reasons other teams
did not perform to expectations. Injuries took a toll on most sides. Ill-discipline in the Senior 3 cost
them their competition. Coaching uncertainties leading to some loss in morale affected a couple
of sides. Training ground closures, loss of representative players, and the unreliability of some
players lead to frustrations which ultimately resulted in a disappointing second half of the year for
many teams. Most concerning was the relegation of the Senior 1 team to Senior 2 and the
consequential affect this had on the demotion of our Senior 2 team.
Nevertheless the club remained in good heart. Off the field the building projects were completed.
Increased numbers of games were played on the no.1 field. The Presidents team became a
fixture each Saturday in the clubrooms. The gym was set up and considerable use was made of
the facilities. People really enjoyed each other’s company.
The committee has continued to work hard to support the club. With the appointment of Peter
Ballinger to the president’s chair and Greg Hooper to the rugby committee there was a renewed
sense of commitment, loyalty and experience that pervaded the club meetings and activities.
Communication across teams, which was a concern identified last year, appeared to improve
under the leadership of Phil Gibb. The success of the club relies on its players and it is for this
reason that the work off the field by Dan Pavihi, Dan Vulu and Nick Risdon must not be
underestimated.
Appointments to key coaching positions before the start of 2013 will have an important effect on
the success of the club. This is particularly the case with the arrival of the new CCO, Mila Poutoa.
Fil Rayasi has been a strong supporter of the club over many years. His very friendly personality
and the many skills he has brought to teams as a coach and player will be sadly missed. Mila
brings a different style and expertise to the position. We are sure his talents are what the club
needs to move us into our next phase of development.
This has been my last year on the HOBM Committee. During my 2 ½ year I have found the work
of the club captain to both time consuming and enjoyable. I would like to thank all the players,
committee members and supporters for the contribution you continue to make to the club.
Particularly I want to reiterate my gratitude for the work that John Sheehan, Jim McMenamin, Phil
Gibb, Peter McGuinness and Kevin Melville do to ensure the club’s ongoing financial viability and
its good management. It is without doubt the best and most efficiently run rugby club in
Wellington. I know this to be true because ............. just wait and see the results we will achieve
on the field in 2013.

2012 TEAM REPORTS
PREMIER
The Eagles Premier team soared to some great new heights this season setting a benchmark for
other teams in the future to aspire to and surpass on the way to greatness. The mix of old and
new off the field saw a new era at HOBM. Stalwarts Greg Hooper, Alan Ormond with Brady
Cates (Physio) and co coach Matt Lee joined forces with Doug King ( Medic and much more) and
new co coach Justin Wilson.
Preseason planning started back in September 2011 with a focus on targeting every trophy on
offer. The team was able to secure 7 out of the 9 trophies on offer unfortunately the opportunity to
add the Jubilee Cup went missing after finishing in 5th place.
The preseason focussed on skill and fitness with the first trophy on offer as early as the 2nd week
in March. A group of our Club coaches worked a large and motivated group at preseason
training’s, most of our trainings had 40 – 50 players each night working very hard. The Premier
Coaches’ first test came from picking a squad from this training group to represent HOBM at the
NZ Marist 81st Spillane tournament hosted by Tukapa Rugby and Sports club in Taranaki.
SPILLANE CUP
The trip to Taranaki saw the premier boys take control of the back of the bus and set the tone for
the trip. A late arrival at the Devon Hotel 11.30pm meant just about everyone was ready for sleep
and a powerful breakfast in the morning. Saturday had HOBM drawn to play last year’s finalist
Napier Marist and while they were competitive for the first 25 minutes then the Eagles flew past
them finishing the match comfortable winners HOBM 36 to Napier Marist 16.
Day two saw old rivals pitted against each other with HOBM to play MSP in the cup final. It was a
torrid battle that had the medical staff the busiest people on the day. The match ebbed and
flowed like a heavyweight battle with counter punches barrelling into each other until the Eagles
were able to deliver the deadly blow that saw Jason Risdon score and secure the Spillane Cup
for a record three in a row with the final score HOBM 20 to MSP 7.
SWINDALE SHIELD
The 2012 Eagles became the Swindale Shield Champions after overcoming local rivals
Wainuiomata in the final round. Throughout the Swindale Shield there were some outstanding
results including the biggest winning margin over Petone in the Mc Bain Shield, Winning back the
Father Cleary Shield for the first time in 8 attempts against MSP, winning the Inaugural Don Bond
Cup against Ories and finally beating Poneke for the first time in 5 years. What a great effort in
also securing all of our other first round traditional trophy matches between OBU and Wainui.
There were some outstanding individual performances from the likes of Simon Maeleulu, Sam
Faisandier and Jason Risdon up front. The Eagles having competition top points scorer Glen
Walters and both top try scorers Tupeni Kamakorewa and Taleta Tupoula getting great service
from Taiso Silafai – Leanna and the rest of the backs. These efforts saw the Eagles winning 10
out of the 11 matches scoring over 300 points in this competition.
JUBILEE CUP
The second round saw a change of weather and fortunes which culminated in the Eagles not
registering a win from their first four games and in a seven game round this proved to be costly.
With major injuries hitting the team hard in the first four rounds a massive form reversal saw the
Eagles almost pull off the impossible. With a chance to secure a place in the Jubilee Cup semi
final if Norths could overcome Wainui this wasn’t to be. However a great fight back from the boys
shows just how much courage, commitment and belief is in this team when everyone else had
written them off.
The second round saw some other players stand up and lead the way Nic Risdon’s leadership is
one of the reasons why the team is so strong on and off the field. Deon Carney, Elia Fonoti,
George Amosa poured their heart and souls into the team.
Not a great result to finish 5th but a great performance to finish off with winning the last three
games including a 65 point romp against Upper Hutt who had kept us to 5 points in the first
round.
SEASON IN SUMMARY
While we missed the Jubilee Cup it was still a very successful season with 7 trophies in the
cabinet. The other season highlights were the milestones of both Alexis Time and Simon
Malaeulu becoming our latest Eagle Centurions, as well as our Blazer boys- Tuleta, Eroni,
Parataiso, Tupene, Sam, Deon and Kahu.
Unfortunately with our season cut short we will have to wait till next season to celebrate
Polonga’s durability in achieving 200 games for the Club.
The commitment and drive shown by the players during the season was the key to the success
on and off the field. Off the field saw the premier players helping with our junior teams on training
nights and with the kid’s favourite - cooking and serving hot dogs from club BBQ on Saturday
mornings after their home games. Hopefully we can build on the platform this year’s team has
created and improve for 2013.
A massive big thank you to all the support staff that have helped in getting the guys on the
paddock, from Doug and Brady to all the other people in between right up to Jock and the club
committee. We are only able to succeed if the foundations of the club and people in it are working
for each other. We hope we have represented the club well both on and off the field and are
keen to take the club to the next level and build a legacy for the club to be proud of in the future.

Pre-season
Pre-season training was well attended and those that were there benefitted enormously when the
season started. Unfortunately there are always those who only come along at game time and this
makes it hard especially as all games are “live” in the Harper Lock Shield and count for points.
Would have liked to have the squads finalized with a couple of pre-season games to go before
the competition started. This would have been difficult to do this season as there were a number
of Senior 1 players injured, involved with Premier trials or still playing summer sports in March.
The choice of opposition for pre-season games was good.

Following six rounds of the competition HOBM Senior 1 were fourth the table with 3 wins, 1 draw

Jooste at 1st 5/8. The round and season turned during the next game when Heinrich suffered a
season ending injury. With the forwards continuing to improve and play good rugby, the backs
and team lacked direction and only one more win was achieved in the round.

HOBM forwards were dominant in every game of the round, some excellent scrum and lineout

down by the coaches. This is probably due to the age of some of the players.
The HOBM Senior 1 team was relegated at the conclusion of the second round of competition.
Brett Marais
SENIOR 2
Our plan from the start of the year was to use the first round as a look at combinations and what
works well.
We had no locks and used flankers to fill the spot. Chris Brown was an open side flanker who
wasn’t tall but was quick and was our main jumper until he left for his OE. Doug and Ben did well,
and if they didn’t want to play lock then we would have had none.
The key was the guys willing to play anywhere for the team with no one complaining. The whole
squad playing for each other is what won us the cup. Everyone wanting to play for each other,
guys wanting to train when we didn’t have training, just showed how much it meant to the guys to
win the cup.
We (Aturo and myself) just played with who was left over from the top two teams, and if no one
come down we played with the guys we had.
Once we moved trainings from Tuesdays to Wednesdays it went well with good numbers all
season. We pretty much had everything we needed as in cones and balls
Our manager is still learning and we were looking for another manager to help him out but
couldn’t think of one.
I think Fiipe Rayasi is the best club CCO any club could ask for. He’s been there and done that
and where else in New Zealand would you see your CCO mixing it with his club members? The
new guys in our club, when we told them of Filipe’s history were rapt to be playing with a guy with
so much experience and knowledge of the game. He’s just a true legend and true eagles club
man and we need him for the club.
Getting guys back to the club rooms is always hard to do but the talk for my team is the guys
didn’t want to go back to the club in just their normal clothes. They wanted to feel like part of the
club and look like part of the club so were asking why didn’t they get ties and shirts as the top two
teams did. They all said if they had the shirts and ties then they would have all come back.
Player of the days went well if I had the guys there.
Social functions need to involve all teams and not just be functions. A ”top town” theme where
guys from all teams get put into groups to compete in a sports day would generate good club
spirit.
The club needs to bring back the old culture.

Hi my name is Luti Lologa, I was the Player/Coach with the help of Mika Seupule.
We formed a rugby team together through mates and families within the Samoan Community.
From a coaching point of view we did not have much experience about coaching a team. With the
help of some players that had played rugby in top grades we managed to win games.
In the first round we lost only 1 game and most games were won by 30-40 points.
It was clear to me this team had potential of winning the Grade.
Due to me being so eager to win the second round I played a suspended player in the semi-final
which we won but were subsequently defaulted for the final.
For the first time we put this team together I thought it wasn’t a bad effort, and most of these
guys are capable of playing good rugby.
For 2013 I have decided to take another role for work, which requires most of my time. I have
spoken to Mika and he is willing to continue our journey. We would love to see this team carry on
and win the grade.
Regards
Luti Lologa
COLTS
This year has been successful in terms of understanding the importance of ‘Performance’ and
‘Principles of Play’. With a young team I definitely feel that the team applied those principles and
performed to the best of their ability, gaining in making the top six for Division One. We may
have not achieved in winning the 2012 competition however, the players still managed to put up a
good fight with a two point difference against the two top teams of the grade in the second round.
There were six players from 2011, then lost four of those players to Premier, Senior 1 and
injuries. Leaving only two experience players always instigates that question of can the younger
players foot it with the older, stronger and experienced teams? I suppose it goes back to what
Ben Perenise had mentioned in 2010 report about every 2-3 years clubs go through re-born
stage this year was our year again.
The young team played exciting rugby and had no issues in moving the ball and gaining the
advantage line. We struggled a bit on converting tries and penalties and we relied a lot on
getting the ball over the line, which is a high risk especially when you were playing ‘catch-up’
rugby. I must say that, this young side has been given a good base for the coming 2013 season
which it would be exciting to see them one year wiser for the grade.
A special mention for those players who played for Senior 1 at some stage during the season,
promoted to Premier and Trialist for the Representative teams they are; Site Timu, Sepe Muaau,
Daniel McElean, Shale Tangianau, Rei Manaia, Bob Tane and James Bailey.
I would like to thank the management team i.e. Steve Crilly, Alex Telea and Hori McGregor for all
your time & efforts during the season.

85kgs - HOWLERS
Overall I was very happy with what this team has achieved this season. To make a division one
semi with three quarters of the team having never played division one was awesome.
Admittedly we gained five Robots from the previous year however this was offset by the loss of
five very good players early in the season to injury. The five Robot players were also stoked as
they had never got that far previously.
We were fortunate to have a very good back line with the likes of Cam Paulik, Nic Foster, George
Bevan and Dan Kubiack however we struggled against the two top sides to give them good go
forward ball. We had two good loosies in Hamish Bryan and Clay Taylor, and Mark Fibbes won
some good ball at the front of the lineout. We just seem to lack some mongrel up front at pick
and go and clean-out, however our defence was awesome. If they could use the same urgency
and spirit on defence with their pick and go/ clean-outs, they would be on the right track. We also
had two players, Keith Ives and Tom Weston who had never played rugby before and we went
into the semi with 19 and 21 year old locks. If this team can stick together for another year or
two, as they are relatively young and still learning, then we can give division one a good shake. It
is imperative therefore that we keep the bulk of these players together, so we can be successful
next season.
This season Dan Burns helped me with coaching. He handled the forwards, looked after the
drinks and weigh-ins. His assistance made my life so much easier. We also received awesome
support from Supe Mesa. He has played 100 games for Wainuiomata premiers and played
overseas. If I had a problem on Saturday and talked to Supe he would have an appropriate drill
on Wednesday night. He attended every training and when possible, Saturdays. His input this
season was outstanding.
We do not rely on a lot of assistance from the Club as their priorities must lie with the premiers
and age group teams. Having said that it would be good for the club to provide this team, now
they are in Division One, with a coach with recent relevant experience. This is a young side and
to keep them together an announcement of a new coach sooner rather than later will assist in
seeing them back next year. I have spent four years doing my best but when I see the
knowledge and expertise that some-one like Supe’s has, I know I’m out of my depth. I have tried
to encourage him to coach next year but he is unsure of what he is up to. I will however remain
involved in the background with the Howlers maybe as manager.

PRESIDENTS
The season started well and our summer recruitment programme worked extremely well. There
were old players that had played for the club finding their boots and playing a bit more rugger
again which is great.
The team where able to supply new jerseys this year, and with the jackets and shirts the team
looks very smart when at home or visiting other clubs.
This is the first year that Doug Powers has not played since he was five years old due to
commitments with his sons rugby but he has promised a come back next year.
The team was able to help some of the junior teams with finance this year which is what the
grade is all about, putting back into the club what the club has given to the players over the
years.
With players like Brownie, Tony Cruickshank, Hamish, Steve Mann, Blayne, Wayne, Des, Vlad
and the Sua Boys, where other clubs struggle for numbers we are getting stronger.
The team and management would like to thank the club and supporters for their continued
support and we look forward to 2013 and maybe holding a Pressies day at the club.

GOLDEN OLDIES – SAINTS & SINNERS
Firstly, congratulations to the Premiers on their Swindale Shield win and to all other sides on the
success of their respective seasons. Saints’n’Sinners Golden Oldies are proud to be involved
with one of Wellington’s largest and most progressive Rugby clubs.
The Saints ‘n’ Sinners Golden Oldies are made up of players from 35 to 50 something and
provide an opportunity for present and former players and mates over the age of 35 to get
together every second Sunday to play the other 17 Golden Oldies teams in the region from Levin
down to Wellington and back up to the Wairarapa.
As Golden Oldies has no kicking, de-powered scrums, minimal contest and no clean out around
the rucks and mauls it promotes running rugby and ensures the ball is being used for over 55
minutes of the three twenty minute periods of play. Imagine no scrum resets, no standing around
waiting for kicks at goal and minimal ruck and maul stoppages.
There is a great sense of camaraderie as we live up to the Golden Oldies motto of Fun,
Friendship and Fraternity to which can be added Family as it is definitely an activity that
encourages complete family involvement.
Our games are a mix of very competitive to a bit more leisurely depending on the strength of the
opposition and with rolling subs there is no danger of running out of puff. We are keen to invite
and involve new members and welcome a phone call or email from those players who want to
remain in the game but don’t have the time for training or committing to every week.
Our season of 12 games included 11 solid victories and one close loss to a much younger side
when we were missing a number of key players. However the key thing was the camaraderie and
fun we had during the season helped by the fact we only had one cancellation due to ground
closure. Playing every second week gives enough time for the little niggles and bruises to heal as
well as not losing too much match fitness.
This season saw a number of new recruits involved including Brad Eastham, Shane Nightingale
and Rod Taylor as well as a debut appearance by Fintan Devine’s son.
As 2012 ends with two members off to Japan to celebrate World Golden Oldies Festival in
October we are garnering interest in the World Golden Oldies Festival in Buenos Aries in 2014
which will coincide with the All Blacks match schedule against the Pumas. That’s a trip not to be
missed.
Thanks to all our guys and wives and partners who turned out and contributed to another
successful season. See you all next year.
For those who want to dust their boots off and enjoy the fun and friendship of traditional running
rugby for 2013 and beyond email [email protected]

HOBM Juniors
2012 has been another successful and busy year for the junior club. The club continues to grow
with player numbers now in excess of 320 kids across the grades. This success comes partly
due to the rugby world cup but more importantly it reflects the strong position both the senior and
junior clubs are in. People are starting to recognise that the club is a warm, friendly and
successful place for their children to play and we need to build on this even more in the coming
years.
The season has not been without its challenges, grounds and wet weather being the main
culprits but despite this the season has again gone fantastically. Our teams continue to play with
great skill, spirit and most importantly great sportsmanship. A large part of this success must be
attributed to the dedication of the coaches and parents and I send a very large thank you to all
who became involved this year with a team.
Big thanks to our new sponsors, NME Electrical and Stevens Ford. Without this sponsorship
none of the success would be possible.
The year has seen a number of highlights for the club including:
x The Nursery grade has continued to grow, with more than 30 under 5’s each Saturday
morning – A big thanks to Craig Bailey whose organisation and dedication to early
mornings continues to make this a roaring success!
x Training shirts for all the boys – thanks sponsors
x Another successful Manly tour to Australia was held
x Successful club exchanges with ParaPlim, Paraparaumu andHastings
We have again had strong representation in the Hutt Valley and Wellington rep teams with 13
boys selected across the teams:
Hutt Valley U11
Shyheim Aiga
Nathan Tanuvasa
Hutt Valley U12
Hutt Valley U13 P2
Wellington Regional U13
Jack Gray
Fred Sunia
William Rua
Aisea Mafileo
Mikaele Alaifatu
Harrison Boyle
Franco Ashton

Our congratulations go out to all the boys who have made these teams. It reflects well on the
coaches, parents and the club as a whole. Let’s hope that many of these boys make the return
journey back to the senior club when their schooling has finished allowing us to continue to grow
the senior club.
Success doesn’t come easily and without the tireless work put in by the committee over the
course of the season none of this would happen. I would like to thank those of the committee
who have put in so much effort over the last six months, especially Stephen Lynch, Mark Murphy
And Ra Hunkin.
Spread the word over summer – HOBM is the place to be! Thanks to everyone, have a great
summer and see you all back again next year.

Financial Report for Period Ending 30th September 2012
The year commenced with the coffers fairly empty, it closed with them further depleted.
Regrettably we have found the road to securing Community Trust income even harder this year
and we have had rejections for funding applications of around $20,000 for expenditure items
which we have historically enjoyed ongoing success with and which we had budgeted to receive.
This has left us struggling to make ends meet. It follows that next year we have to work even
more zealously to control expenditure and so 2013 will see a very austere budget with little frills
for players and us working even harder to secure Community Trust funds to fund any ‘extras’. I
personally hope to see players adopt a more ‘hands-up’ approach to the club next year rather
than the hitherto ‘hands-out’ approach which has been all too evident.
After two years of major infrastructure development we have achieved significantly rejuvenated
clubrooms, a self-contained gymnasium with new showers and toilets and a new team debriefing
room, providing us with facilities matching any club in Wellington. To enable the completion of
this work the club took out a $30,000 mortgage and the Junior Club loaned the Senior Club
$20,000. But given the development work cost in excess of $250,000 this was an acceptable
outcome. It has certainly set us up for the next 20 years.
As a result of our need to borrow we established a budget that saw some constraints on
expenditure, particularly around the provision of ‘free’ gear. We also targeted improved returns
on bar trading and sponsorship. Unfortunately we don’t appear to have been as zealous in the
drive to control ‘free stuff’ as much as I would have liked this season and this will be an area
earmarked for even tighter controls in 2013. Our expenditure on team travel somehow also got a
little out of control this season, a situation which will not be repeated in 2013
Fortunately our sponsorship income targets were more than achieved with Kevin Melville’s
sterling efforts resulting in sponsorship support unmatched by almost any other club in
Wellington. It is only when you view other club’s sponsorship income streams do you appreciate
how lucky we are to have guy like Kevin on board. He has been ably supported in his activities
as usual by Peter McGuinness. Our family of sponsors is listed in this publication and it is
important that our members reciprocate this support by supporting their businesses when they
can.
The club achieved a small operating surplus of around $11,486 but when capital expenditure and
mortgage principal payments are factored in there is $10,000 cash deficiency which will need to
be made up in 2013.
This year the club has invested in capital equipment as follows: Gymnasium Equipment & Fitout - $14,000
Kitchen Extractor Unit - $6,000
Security Cameras & Access Control for Gymnasium - $5000
Furniture - Team Debriefing room - $1000
The first two items were funded by Community Trust grants.
