Flathead Engine
Hot Rods and good
friends.
For me, one has always
led directly to the other.
And both always lead to a good time.
That’s what the Honest Charley Catalogs are all
about….
Having a good time while building a fun, safe and
dependable Hot Rod. It’s about bringing good friends
and families together. It’s about you building your car
from scratch or completing a car that’s individually
yours. It’s about having a Hot Rod that reflects your
personality. It’s all about being involved in a project
that you enjoy and that you can finish.
We’ve arranged this catalog just as you might
proceed while building your hot rod. The parts that
we present here are of known quality and when
properly installed will do what you expect them to do.
I encourage you to keep your project fun, and
manageable. Budget your time and your money. In
doing so, your completed project will exceed your
expectations.
If this is your first Hot Rod you might consider keeping
it simple and getting on the road as soon as possible.
In fact this is good advice for most projects. After
all, working on Hot Rods in the garage is fun, but it’s
always more fun when you get out on the road.
Thanks for including Honest Charley in your journey
down the hot rod highway. We always appreciate
being involved. And the next time you’re near our
shop we hope you’ll pull in, rev the engine and visit
with us.

Record Setting Honest
Hisself’s Honest Powered ‘39 Ford set the
record at 131.9 mph at the 1953 Daytona
Beach midnite drags and other records too.
Famed engine master , Buck Jacks of
Chattanooga, TN built Honestʼs 322 cid
Flathead with a 3 " bore, 4 ½" stroker and
4 Stromberg carbs runnin’ on gas.
Ernest T. Hughes of Summerville, GA
constructed the 3000 lb car. Body and paint
was massaged by “gun guru”, Bob O’Guin.
Rumor was that it would’ve gone faster ʼcept
Honest had the back seat and trunk filled with
his catalogs, decals and stuff.

Cylinder HeadTorque Tech
Initial Torque
Thoroughly clean head, engine block, head bolts and dirty holes
• Dirty bolts/holes can alter torque readings by as much as 20
foot pounds • Use hardened washers under head bolts or nuts •
Properly seal any threads that enter water jackets • Finger tighten
bolts/nuts and torque in at least 3 steps with smooth motion •
Follow suggested torque sequence exactly
Re-Torque
Run engine till it reaches operating temperature • For aluminum
heads - let engine cool completely before re-torquing • For
steel heads - re-torque while warm • Always follow manufacturers
torque sequence • Torque one fastner at a time • Torque
again after 300 - 500 miles until torque values are permanently
established
Head Removal
Remove aluminum heads only after completely cooled • Work in
reverse of recommended torque sequence
Honest Tips
Torque head mounted generator/alternator brackets in
conjunction with cylinder heads • Install chrome nut covers
after all torque setting are permanently established
Problem Solver Head Gaskets
Soft annealed 100% copper • Available in .020, .031, .040, .050, .056, .064, .072, .080, .090, .100 and .125 • Available in
custom bore sizes • We recommend the gasket bore be .020 larger than the engine bore • Thicker head gaskets help you reclaim
piston valve clearance with milled heads and long throw cranks • Thinner raises compression • Sold in pairs • Consult with your

Honest Advice
Cylinder Head Torque Sequence
1938 - 1948
Check cylinder head clearances
carefully when using performance
cams and pistons and shaved heads.
Additional machine work may be
needed in the valve pocket area.
Bored or decked blocks may require
machine work in the piston dome
area. .050" clearance for pistons
and valves is usually considered safe
for street engines. Check spark plug
lengths carefully. Some heads use
- others
. A plug too long will hit
the valve.

918-82011
• ‘32 - ‘41 engines used a single " bolt to drive both
water pumps and fan/generator.
• ‘42 - early ‘50 Fords and Mercs used two "
belts. One belt drove both water pumps and the
generator. The other belt drove just the fan.
• Late ʼ50 - ʼ53 Fords and Mercs used two " Belts.
One belt connected the crankshaft, water pump
and fan. The other connected the crankshaft, other
water pump and generator.
• For engine swaps select water pumps based on
your particular engine and chassis combination.
• You’ll probably run an alternator instead of
a generator and an electric fan instead of a
mechanical fan.
• Check belt alignment carefully. Spacers may be
needed.
• Be prepared to jump in there and make
modifications as required.

Valves
Early Flatheads 1932 - 1948 had 2 piece valve guides with mushroom stem valves. Later Flatheads used a one piece valve guide with
a modern style valve. The later style is much more desirable. To update from the early valve setup, you’ll need the following:

Bore Size
Pistons
• The term “Big Bore” refers to bore sizes 3 " and
larger.
• Stock bore from 1932 - 1941 is 3 " (3.0625).
• Stock bore from 1942 - 1953 is 3
" (3.1875).
• Stock bore for 1939 - 1953 Merc & 1942 - 1953
Ford is 3
" (3.1875).
•3
" (3.3125) is a good “Big Bore” choice for
performance street flatheads.
• 3 " is frequently considered the maximum “Big
Bore” choice for street engines. Unfortunately core
shift during casting may result in thin cylinder walls
and/or overheating.
• Cast pistons are suitable for all performance street
Flatheads (except supercharged and nitrous).
•Stock Fords used a 4-ring piston design with 3-rings
above the piston pin and one ring below.
• Egge replacement 4-ring cast pistons are available
for bores from 3
" to + .125".
• Egge 3-ring cast pistons are an economical choice for
3
" and “Big Bore” engines up to 3
".
• Ross 3-ring forged pistons are suitable for all
Flatheads including supercharged and nitrous.
Available in bore sizes 3
" (3.3125) and larger.
Ross® Pistons
Ross forged piston sets are your
best choice for blowers, nitrous extreme performance • Includes
aircraft quality pins and spiro

• Ford Flatheads from 1932 - 1953 and Mercury
Flatheads from 1939 - 1941 had a 3 ¾" (3.750)
stroke.
• Mercury engines 1949 - 1953 have a 4" (4.000)
stroke. When using the 4" Mercury crankshaft
in earlier Ford engines you’ll run the early main
bearings and use later connecting rods and rod
bearings. Specify pistons for 4" stroke.
• Honest offers Scat crankshafts and rotating
assemblies in 4", 4 " & 4 ¼" stroke, so you can
build “Big Bore” Flatheads up to 304 cid. All them
bootleggers knew “there’s no substitute for cubic
inches”. Apparently, it took real horsepower to
move those quart jars.

Oil Pump
Flatheads were not known for good oil pressure, so a good pump is essential for long life • 1932 - 1948 engines used a “long
body” pump rated at only 30 psi at 30 mph • In late 1949, the pump was re-designed with a short body and greater capacity • To
install the later “short body” improved pump in earlier engines, also use the later pickup and screen. You may need to trim the oil
baffle inside the earlier pans
