A proposal of Cyril Dietrich
With ‘Insoluble solids’, Cyril Dietrich invites us to discover a sample of a possible personal collection gathering
some works realised in Europe since the 70’s. For him, these works would retain their complex character as long
as their problematic is embedded in the outside world. So they reflect an uncertain attitude of their authors
towards their desire or their necessity to produce without betraying the deeply indecipherable nature of what is
offered to them. More than others, these works share the generous quality of not imposing us a defined reading
time. Thus, they enable us (or oblige us) to negociate the speed, the time and the trajectory of our contemplation.
The exhibition ‘Insoluble solids’ can be apprehended through the words of Francis Ponge in Proêmes
(Ed.Gallimard, 1948):
La forme du monde
Il faut d'abord que j'avoue une tentation absolument charmante, longue, caractéristique, irrésistible pour mon
esprit.
C'est de donner au monde, à l'ensemble des choses que je vois ou que je conçois pour la vue, non pas comme le
font la plupart des philosophes et comme il est sans doute raisonnable, la forme d'une grande sphère, d'une
grande perle, molle et nébuleuse, comme brumeuse, ou au contraire cristalline et limpide, dont comme l'a dit l'un
d’eux le centre serait partout et la circonférence nulle part, ni non plus d'une "géométrie dans l'espace", d'un
incommensurable damier, ou d'une ruche aux innombrables alvéoles tour à tour vivantes et habitées, ou mortes
et désaffectées, comme certaines églises sont devenues des granges ou des remises, comme certaines coquilles
autrefois attenues à un corps mouvant et volontaire de mollusque, flottent vidées par la mort, et n'hébergent plus
que de l'eau et un peu de fin gravier jusqu'au moment où un bernard-l'hermite les choisira pour habitacle et s'y
collera par la queue, ni même d'un immense corps de la même nature que le corps humain, ainsi qu'on
pourraitencore l'imaginer en considérant dans les systèmes planétaires l'équivalent des systèmes moléculaires et
en rapprochant le télescopique du microscopique.
Mais plutôt, d'une façon tout arbitraire et tour à tour, la forme de choses les plus particulières, les plus
asymétriques et de réputation contingentes (et non pas seulement la forme mais toutes les caractéristiques, les
particularités de couleurs, de parfums), comme par exemple une branche de lilas, une crevette dans l'aquarium
naturel des roches au bout du môle du Grau-du-Roi, une serviette-éponge dans ma salle de bain, un trou de
serrure avec une clef dedans.
Et à bon droit sans doute peut-on s'en moquer ou m'en demander compte aux asiles, mais j'y trouve tout mon
bonheur.

PRESENTATION OF BETONSALON
Bétonsalon is a multidisciplinary art and research centre. Our ambition is to foster research and intellectual
production through a program of exhibitions, projections, conferences and workshops. Bétonsalon is conceived
as a space for exchanges between individuals from diverse disciplines: artists, philosophers, playwrights,
choreographers, scientists, and more.
Bétonsalon wishes to encourage experimentation and respond to current artistic and cultural concerns. Therefore
the activities of Bétonsalon are developing on different schedules: projects elaborated well in advance mingle
with spontaneous proposals, resulting from meetings and collaborations.
Bétonsalon is in the 13th district of Paris, in the Masséna area of the ZAC Paris Left Bank, near to the François
Mitterrand Library. Bétonsalon extends over 300m2 of the ‘Flour Exchange,’ former flour storage for the historic
‘Great Mills of Paris.’ Located on the banks of the Seine, the building faces the esplanade of the newly relocated
University Paris 7 – Denis Diderot. the Flour Exchange.
