MAJOR SPONSOR
ARLINGTON, Texas –
Smithfield Foods will sponsor
the final event of the Professional Women’s Bowling Association season, the PWBA
Tour Championship, set to take
place in September with the finals on national television.
The Smithfield PWBA Tour
Championship promoted by
GoBowling.com will bring together the top 16 bowlers from
the 2015 PWBA Tour season,
including the winner of each
tour stop, for the season-ending
event starting Sept. 10 in Arlington, Texas. The stepladder
finals will be televised live on
the CBS Sports Network on
Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. Eastern, with
the winner presented with the
Smithfield Cup.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to partner with the
PWBA during its comeback
season,” Bob Weber, Vice
President of Corporate Marketing for Smithfield Foods, said.
“The early tour events have
drawn a good deal of interest
and the PWBA Tour will be a
great avenue for our brands to
reach bowling fans.”
Smithfield Foods was founded in Smithfield, Virginia,
in 1936 and has become the
world’s largest producer of
pork products. In addition to
its Smithfield flagship brand,
other notable brands produced
by Smithfield Foods include
Eckrich, Farmland, Armour,
Cook’s Gwaltney, John Morrell
and Nathan’s Famous.
The two-year partnership
also makes Smithfield the Official Elite Title sponsor of the
PWBA Tour.
The PWBA Tour re-launched
earlier this year with a threeyear funding commitment from
the BPAA and the United States
Bowling Congress. The season kicked off with the USBC
Queens in May and has seen
sold-out fields for its first three
standard events.
“It’s always great to see when
a company such as Smithfield
Foods sees the value of marketing through our sport,” said
Kelly Kulick, the spokesperson
for the PWBA who could be
featured in PWBA-themed ads
for Smithfield. “The opportunity for women to compete as
professional bowlers on a regular basis is possible because of
the PWBA Tour and because of
companies like Smithfield.”
The PWBA Tour has two
more tour stops this season before the PWBA Tour Championship takes place at the International Training and Research
Center.

Susanne Olsson and Australia’s Andrew Frawley claimed
Masters titles as the 2015
World Bowling Senior Championships came to a close Sunday.
Olsson defeated Lucy San
delin of the United States,
222-184, in the women’s title
match at Sam’s Town Bowling
Center, while Frawley captured his second gold medal of
the event with a 269-222 victory over Lennie Boresch Jr. of
the United States in the men’s
finals.
Olsson, who was the runnerup in Masters at the inaugural
World Bowling Senior Championships in 2013, put together
a stretch of six strikes in seven
frames to distance herself from
Sandelin, who was unable to
double in the title match.
“Everything worked out really well on the lanes today,”
said Olsson, who also earned
silver medals in singles and
all-events and bronze in team
at this year’s event. “I became
more and more comfortable,
and just needed to stay focused
and was able to go all the way,
so it was nice. This means a lot
for the whole team.”
The right-hander made it to
the finals after narrowly escaping Tish Johnson of the
United States in her semifi-
nal match, 202-201. Finishing first, Olsson was unable
to convert the 4-6-7 split in
the 10th to give Johnson the
opportunity to double to advance. After recording the
first strike, Johnson left the 3
pin on her second shot to take
home bronze.
Sandelin, who captured three
gold medals in 2015, edged
teammate and defending Masters champion Robin Romeo in
the other semifinal, 192-190.
Romeo also earned bronze.
Frawley, who started the
2015 event by winning gold in
singles, put on a nearly flawless effort in the championship
round as he finished with nine
consecutive strikes. Boresch
missed a single-pin conversion
in the third frame, but kept the
match close until the ninth
frame when he was unable to
strike for the fifth consecutive
time.
“One thing that I didn’t do the
whole week was watch what
the other guys were doing and
how they were scoring,” said
Frawley, who also helped Australia capture the silver medal
in team competition. “Lennie
was squaring up on the patterns and I wasn’t on the long
pattern at all. Before the final,
I decided to square up similar
to how he was playing them
and it just worked out. I got
a few breaks, and sometimes
it just works out like that. It’s
been a really great week.”
Frawley defeated Ron Mohr of
the United States, 215-186, in
the semifinals, while Boresch
earned his spot in the title
round by defeating Canada’s
Todd Sim, 237-174.

On a sad note, infantile paralysis was striking your
people down. President Roosevelt started the MARCH
OF DIMES.

the NEWS started.

in Africa. They secured an emply building and scoured
the countryside for wood to build the alleys. Olive wood

Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, became
the first two-time winner
this season on the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour as
she overcame a tough
lane condition Saturday
to claim the 2015 PWBA
Detroit Open title.
Johnson took down

193-158, in the championship match at Super
Bowl.
Competing on the
season’s toughest lane
condition, which measured 35 feet in length
and was nearly flat, Liz
Johnson cruised past
Stefanie Johnson in the
final frame after Stefanie Johnson left a split
for an open in the ninth
frame.
It was the second title
of the season for Johnson, who captured the
United States Bowling
Congress Queens championship in May.
“It means a lot to win
a second title this season because there are so
many talented women
out here and they are
hungry to win titles,”
said Johnson, a USBC
Hall of Famer who won
her 13th career PWBA
title. “You have to really
stay on top of your game
physically and mentally
to be competitive out
here.”
The stepladder finals
capped off a low-scoring event in which only
three players averaged
better than 200 for the
tournament.
“You would think with
a short pattern the scores
would be a little lower
anyway but they were
just ugly this week,”
Liz Johnson said. “I like
it when it is more of a
grind like this, but with
the start I had in qualifying this week I didn’t
even think I’d make the
show.”
Johnson, who earned
$10,000 for the victory,
took down Team USA
member Josie Earnest of
Nashville in the highestscoring match of the
stepladder finals, 235202, to advance to the title match. In the opening
match, Earnest topped
Kelly Kulick of Union,
New Jersey, 169-153.

It was the third U.S. Women’s Open victory of her career and helped solidify her
place in the United States
Bowling Congress Hall of
Fame.
“The U.S. Open is one
of the biggest tournaments
we will have, along with
the (USBC) Queens, and
you can usually expect for
it to be pretty tough,” said
Johnson, who won the U.S.
Women’s Open in 1996 and
2007 and owns six major
titles overall. “Since it’s
at the end of the swing,
I know everyone will be
sharp, so I hope I will be,
too. There’s a lot of great
talent out there now, and
that has been great to see. It
also makes me want to stay
on top of my own game.”
Since her U.S. Women’s
Open win in 2013, the 11time Team USA member
has stayed sharp by competing in a variety of international and professional
events.
Most recently, Johnson
was part of the 2015 USBC
Hall of Fame class in April
and went on to win the 2015
Queens, the first event on
the new PWBA Tour, which
was revived after being dormant since 2003.
Johnson’s win at the
Queens earned her a spot in
next month’s season-ending Smithfield PWBA Tour
Championship promoted by
GoBowling.com. The event
will feature all champions
from the 2015 PWBA season, and the 16-player field
will be filled out with the
tour’s top point earners.
The top two on the points
list automatically will be
seeded into the semifinal
round, while the third- and
fourth-seeded players will
earn one bye. The rest of
the field will battle through
a single-elimination bracket. The Tour Championship
winner will take home a
$20,000 top prize.
Johnson missed two
PWBA events this season
because of other bowling
commitments, including the
Pan American Games. She
enters the remaining two
events - this week’s PWBA
Detroit Open and the U.S.
Women’s Open - fourth on
the points list.
“I am fortunate that I’ve
been able to compete at this
level and still be fourth in
points, even with missing
two events,” Johnson said.
“It would be nice to be in
the top two, or even just get
a bye, but to even qualify for
that final event in the Dallas
area is very special.”
Ultimately, Johnson’s
feelings are consistent
with most of the competitors who have been part of
the sold-out fields on the
PWBA Tour this season.
“We’re just extremely
lucky that we have this opportunity again, and we’re
definitely not taking it for
granted,” said Johnson, the
1996 PWBA Rookie of the
Year. “The early turnout
was amazing, and the excitement has been the same
throughout the season. We
only have three weeks left,
and I just want to make the
most of it.”
All competitors at the
2015 U.S. Women’s Open
will bowl 24 qualifying
games over three days, before the field is cut to the
top third for eight additional
games. The 32-game pinfall
totals will determine the 24
players for the round-robin
match-play portion of the
tournament, after which,
the top five will advance to
the stepladder finals based
on their 56-game totals.
Bowlmor AMF, the largest operator of bowling
centers in the world, is
hosting and providing television sponsorship of more
than $250,000 for the U.S.
Women’s Open and the
2015 Bowlmor AMF U.S.

Team Fish: Sometimes, Boys Just
Wanna Have Fun, Too

from the famous Cyndi
Lauper song, sometimes
boys just wanna have fun,
too. Take “Team Fish” for
example. “Team Fish” began to create national curiosity among Professional
Bowlers Association fans
during the Grand Casino
Resort & Hotel PBA Summer Swing when Kyle
Troup of Taylorsville,
N.C., made his national
television debut on CBS
Sports Network, winning
the PBA Wolf Open title
with fellow “Team Fish”
friends Connor Pickford
of Matthews, N.C., and
Craig Nidiffer of Trenton,
Mich., in the background,
cheering him on.
Contrary to conclusions
drawn by some fans, the
“Team Fish” concept had
nothing to do with Troup
being the son of PBA Tour
champion Guppy Troup:
“At the (PBA) World
Series (of Bowling) two
years ago, Connor, Craig
and I were rooming together,” Kyle Troup explained. “Nidiffer plays
online poker, and there
are a lot of ‘fish’ who play
as well. People who don’t
play poker well are called
‘fish.’ So during the World
Series, we all bowled bad.
None of us got a check. We
decided we bowled like
‘fish’ so we kind of made
up a little team among the
three of us, and called ourselves Team Fish.
“When I made (the Wolf
Open) show, the name
kinda took off because I
had the name on my collar,” Troup continued, “so
we decided to make a logo
and have fun with it. It’s
nothing serious; it’s just
going along to see what
we can do with it.”
The little group began giving each other nicknames.
Troup is “AfroFish” because of the Afro hairstyle
he sported during the Wolf
Open finals. Nidiffer became “NidiFish.” Pickford
is “FishFord.” They created their own Facebook
and Twitter pages (Team
Fish), and a website is in
the works. Through Facebook, fans create their
own “fish” nicknames and
can order o-FISH-al merchandise, like t-shirts.
“If it takes off, hopefully
other guys on Tour will
make their own teams with
their own names,” Troup
said. “It’s all in fun. It just
gives fans something special to cheer for.”
Next up, Team Fish will
make its formal competitive debut during the upcoming PBA South Point
Bowling Plaza Fall Classic in Las Vegas when five
“fish” will bowl together
in the new five-player PBA

This team won a trophy – and vindication

WINNETKA – From the
outhouse to the penthouse.
That’s the route the
bowling team of Lynn
Snyder, Larry Ellis, Jeff
Hershow and Mark Ellis
traveled en route to claiming the championship of
the “Wednesday Night
Rollers” league at Winnetka Bowl.
The foursome shook off
the sting of being swept by
the dreaded “blind team”
last month to win the
title in a hotly contested
championship match last
Wednesday.
The “blind team” is
the imaginary group of
four bowlers that competes each week against a
team in those leagues that
sport an odd number of
teams. It’s a seven-team
“Wednesday Night Rollers” league so each week
one team faces the “blind
team,” which also is referred to as the “vacant”
or “bye team.” Teams that
take on the “blind team”
have a mathematic edge
going into their match because of the way points are
calculated.
Longtime Winnetka
Bowl manager Mike Willis said being swept by the
“blind team” wasn’t a onein-a-million situation but
was “a rare thing. You’d
think a team could win at
least one game.”
But the Snyder-EllisHershow-Ellis juggernaut
got some vindication by
holding off its title-match
opponent. “It was nice to
win it after our big humili-
ation,” said Mark Ellis, the
team’s anchor who blasted
a 211 in the third game.
“It was touch and go the
entire way.”
Ellis’ team – named Team
4 – battled a game and
gutty Team 6 foursome of
Sylvia Eisen, Wayne Eisen, Marty Eisen and Stan
Salter that won two of the
three games but fell short
in the decisive total pinfall. Sylvia perhaps turned
in the most memorable effort of the night when she
put on a pretty good imitation of national bowling
star Kelly Kulick.
Syliva, who averages
110, blasted easily her
personal-best with a score
of 173 in the third game,
which was marked by three
strikes in a row, the first
time she’s accomplished
that feat. Asked about her
clutch performance, Syliva
modestly said, “It was all
luck.” Stan also delivered
a powerful 234 in the finale, but it wasn’t enough
for Team 6.
Team 4’s effort was led
by Larry Ellis, who blistered a 216 in the second
game – a whopping 59
pins above his average.
As for the loss to the
“blind team,” Lynn said it
never gnawed at her. “It
bothered them [teammates]
more than it bothered me,”
she said. “I’m just here to
bowl and have fun.”
Strangely, two weeks
after Team 4 suffered its
indignity, another team in
the same league also was
swept by the “blind team.”
Said Willis:
“Maybe
it’s something about the
‘Wednesday Night Rollers’ league. Or maybe that
‘blind team’ is just stacked.
Too tough to beat.”
Steve Singerman, a
member of that swept
team, said he was aware of
Team’s 4 three-game loss
to the “blind team.” Said
Singerman: “We felt their
misery and decided to join
them.”
Members of the “blind
team” could not be reached
for comment.

DEAF TRAVEL LEAGUE
NEEDS A BOWLER TO START 56TH SEASON
NORWALK — Southern California Deaf Traveling League
had its 56th annual meeting and some bowlers dropped out.
League President Ed Abakunoff said the league has enough
bowlers to start with four teams of foursomes. Also unless one
bowler with a 170 average shows up, the league will have six
teams of trios like they had for the last few years.
This oldest deaf scratch league out west will continue
its 56th year at Keystone Lanes on Sunday September 13 with
bowling time at 1 PM. Any interested deaf or hearing-impaired
bowler wanting to join, contact the officers Pres. Abakumoff,
Vice-President Sharon Caldwell or Secretary-treasurer Bob Taylor. Any other bowlers with close deaf relatives who know the
deaf sign language may join.
This league travels to 8 different bowling centers two Sundays per month. Minimum average is 140 and match play scores
are bowled scratch in 3 classes (A high average, B medium and
C low average).

IN ITALY’S WORLD DEAF CHAMPIONSHIP

BOLOGNA, Italy — The 3rd World Deaf Bowling Championship held August 20-30 in Bologna, Italy attracted 29 countries
with men and women bowlers. United States is among the few
countries that could not send a team of women.
The medal play bowling events are singles, doubles, 5
players team and all-events with the masters match plays not yet
completed. The best the USA men could do only get the bronze
medal in doubles.

several exciting matches
in the Single elim Finals.
He edged a tough Leo
Silva in the final game for
the win.
Cut scores were higher
taking Men +92 Women
+47. Super Seniors added
were Mike Moore+76,
Ben Masteran +69, Danny Eguilos+69 and Kerry
Lucka Ladies +40.
Top Qualifiers were John
Samson +158 and ladies
Christina Cheung +154.
They will get paid entries
to any regular event for
the nice bowling.
John and Christina drew
for the Match Series. No
Winner with a 425 carry
over of $1,590. Mystery
Doubles unmatched at a
425 with a $655 Carryover. These pots will be
huge at CAL this weekend.
The 3-6-9 Pot carried
over as Vuong Do got a
$100 consolation for last
standing. He missed on
shot 2 so we go for $900
at CAL.
The semis began and
in a very contentious
field James Borillo came
through in game 3 to lead
with a huge +208 edging
a hot John Samson +200
Wow!!!!! James would
sit out and bowl for the
title with John entering
the top 16 single elims in
round two! James drew
a very Matchable 144 for
the Match Game and four
people hit the $1015 pot,
Benjamin Chung, Ely
Cruz, Bobbie Mc Collum and Roy Li. They got
$253 each. Estimated pot
at $3,000 this weekend.
Single elim finals hit the
floor. Being eliminated in
Round One ($100 each)
were Brijesh Patel, Cecilia Lung, Sol Cericos,
Andy Yu, Greg Velarde,
Alan Aguilar and Bella
Ordona.
6-9th places were John
Samson, Ferdinand Alarcio, Emily Yeung and
Vic Paolucci, $105 each.
Then
in round three
James Samson, and Trung
Duong were eliminated.
They finished 4th and
5th.
Now down to top 3. In
a tight game going to the
final ball and missing the
10 pin saw Pensean Chea
fall to Leo Silva in a very
exciting match, by a 219215 score. Pengsean was
3rd $200. Leo advanced
to the title game vs fellow CAL bowler James
Borillo.
The title game was on
and top seed, Borillo led
off. Both bowlers spared
but Silva chopped the 5-9
frame 2, Borillo led by
17. Then he got tough and
Borillo struck in frames
3-4-5. Silva answered
the call in a big way with
strikes on frames 5-6-7
and with James opening
in frame 6 led by only 3
pins. Leo slammed a 10
pin. If carried he would
lead!! He picked it up and
here comes Borillo with
another big 3 bagger to
finish at a nice 222/266.
Leo marked and struck
for 205/243. Great bowling by both. James wins
title #2 in front of his fine
family no less! They were
very proud! Congrats
James! Great Bowling.

Kory Olson is on a roll again

The NFL season is upon us
again – and guess what?
Recreational bowler Kory
Olson is going about his everyday routine without the need to
hide behind sunglasses.
That’s big news . . . and
here’s why!
Kory’s optimistic nature is
busting out again these days
despite the stomach-turning
events of this year’s Super
Bowl. Fortunately, bowling
proved to be the panacea for
what ailed him.
Here is what happened earlier in the year:
Kory, a Camarillo resident,
was readily looking ahead to
the Feb. 1, 2015 football extravaganza known as Super
Bowl XLIX that pitted the
New England Patriots against
the Seattle Seahawks.
There was good reason for
his excitement.
Kory was born and raised in
Seattle before moving to the
L.A. area in the 1970s. He always rooted for the Seahawks
– whether he lived in Seattle or
here. Not the Seattle Mariners.
Just the Seahawks.
What’s more, Kory bears a
close physical resemblance to
Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll.
When people see him on the
street, they often do a doubletake, not knowing whether
they’re actually viewing the
former USC football coach
who directed the L.A. team
from 2001-2009.
“That happens at least once

during the football season,”

Does your ball need to be resurfaced or baked? Are your
finger grips in good shape? Bowling shoes looking a little
ratty? To be ready for the start of the winter season visit
Roger in the Pro Shop for all your bowling needs. He’s just
waiting to help you!
New leagues will be starting soon and that means
a league meeting is coming up. Whether it’s the week
before or on your first night, be sure to attend! This is no
joke. So many bowlers blow off the meeting and then when
something comes up their recourse is limited. It’s your
league. Not the secretary’s, not the president’s. You, the
weekly bowlers who have final say in important decisions
for your league. I know, you think it’s the same old, same
old and sometimes it is but things in the bowling world are
changing more quickly than they once did. Handicap percentage is a common issue or raising the max pins in the
league. Even the handling of substitutes can be a critical
discussion. Maybe you have views on how the league was
run last year and have suggestions for the rest of the bowlers that just may be valuable. What about sweepers? Are
they what you like? Waiting until sweeper week to voice
your opinions id futile. Know your rules before you start the
year and don’t underestimate the value of your participation in the meeting. Now off you go! Have the best winter
