MARCH 28, 2015 Official Race Guide FEATURING THE AN EVENT OF THE Welcome! Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k weekend is finally here! We have created this Race Guide to help prepare you for a great event on March 28th. The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by MARTIN’S continues to shine as a source of pride for our community. You, the runners and walkers, should be proud of your commitment to lead a healthier life and for the hundreds of thousands of dollars that have been raised for the VCU Massey Cancer Center through the Massey Challenge. The participants of this event continue to inspire so many of us in the community and help support an Active RVA. The party atmosphere of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k receives the recognition, but it is the widespread community support that makes the event what it is today. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Committee, thousands of volunteers, spirit groups, bands and cheering spectators who are all out there supporting you on race day. Good luck on Saturday! Whether you are racing, running, or walking, I hope that your 10k is everything you want it to be. You will line up for the start based on the letter on your bib number. This letter represents the wave that you chose based on your predicted or qualifying time. While lining up on Broad Street, please look for the volunteer holding the wave sign that corresponds to your bib. For example, if your bib number is SB22244, then you will look for the “SB” sign. Your group will be walked into the starting corral as the start time for your wave approaches. Wave Security will be on hand to make sure that you are lined up with the correct wave. PLEASE NOTE: • If you wish to start with someone who is in a different wave, you may do so by starting in the slower person’s wave. In other words, you may drop back to a slower wave, but no one may move up to a faster wave. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED! • Be sure to pin your bib number to the front of your shirt. You must wear your bib number to be admitted into the starting corral. Your race number also contains your timing device. Please do not bend or fold your bib as this may damage the timing device and prevent you from receiving an accurate time. • Remember, we have chip timing to record your exact start time, so your results will accurately reflect the time it took you to run the race, no matter which corral you start in. IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT WAVE START TIMES Each wave will begin promptly at its designated start time. Participants are responsible for being on time for the start of their wave. Starting mats will be turned off immediately after the start of Wave YB in order to reopen Broad Street, so latecomers are in danger of not receiving an accurate start time. 6 www.sportsbackers.org EVENT INFORMATION WAVE START SCHEDULE CATEGORY START TIME Wave A - Seeded Runners - Sub 41:00 8:30 a.m. Wave AA - Seeded Runners - 41:00 to 43:59 8:31 Wave AB - Seeded Runners - 44:00 to 45:59 8:32 Wave AW - Racing Wheelchairs 8:34 Wave B - Seeded Runners - 46:00 to 46:59 8:35 Wave BA - Seeded Runners - 47:00 to 47:59 8:36 Wave BB - Seeded Runners - 48:00 to 48:59 8:37 Wave C - Seeded Runners - 49:00 to 49:59 8:38 Wave D - Seeded Runners - 50:00 to 50:59 8:39 Wave E - Seeded Runners - 51:00 to 51:59 8:40 Wave F - Seeded Runners - 52:00 to 52:59 8:41 Wave G - Seeded Runners - 53:00 to 53:59 8:42 Wave H - Seeded Runners - 54:00 to 54:59 8:43 Wave J - Seeded Runners - 55:00 to 55:59 8:44 Wave K - Seeded Runners - 56:00 to 56:59 8:45 Wave L - Seeded Runners - 57:00 to 57:59 8:46 Wave M - Seeded Runners - 58:00 to 58:59 8:47 Wave N - Seeded Runners - 59:00 to 59:59 8:48 Wave P - Seeded Runners - 60:00 to 60:59 8:49 Wave Q - Seeded Runners - 61:00 to 61:59 8:50 Wave R - Seeded Runners - 62:00 to 62:59 8:51 Wave SA - Runners - 63:00 to 65:59 8:53 Wave SB - Runners - 63:00 to 65:59 8:56 Wave SC - Runners - 63:00 to 65:59 8:59 Wave SD - Runners - 63:00 to 65:59 9:02 a.m. Wave SE - Runners - 63:00 to 65:59 9:05 Wave SF - Runners - 63:00 to 65:59 9:08 Wave SG - Runners - 63:00 to 65:59 9:11 Wave TA - Runners - 66:00 to 69:59 9:14 Wave TB - Runners - 66:00 to 69:59 9:17 Wave UA - Joggers - 70:00 to 74:59 9:20 Wave UB - Joggers - 70:00 to 74:59 9:23 Wave UC - Joggers - 70:00 to 74:59 9:26 Wave VA - Joggers - 75 to 90 min. 9:29 Wave VB - Joggers - 75 to 90 min. 9:32 Wave VC - Joggers - 75 to 90 min. 9:35 Wave WA - Jog/Walkers - 90 to 100 min. 9:38 Wave WB - Jog/Walkers - 90 to 100 min. 9:41 Wave WC - Jog/Walkers - 90 to 100 min. 9:44 Wave WD - Jog/Walkers - 90 to 100 min. 9:47 Wave XA - Walk/Joggers - 100 to 110 min. 9:50 Wave XB - Walk/Joggers - 100 to 110 min. 9:53 Wave YA - Walkers - 110 to 120 min. 9:56 Wave YB - Walkers - 120 min. or more 10:00 a.m. VCU MASSEY CANCER CENTER AT&T Dash for the Cash Runner Creates Win-Win Scenario By Pete Woody Tom Visotsky has deep roots in the Richmond area, both through his running experiences and work in the community, and he’ll be calling on both when he sets off as the participant in this year’s AT&T Dash for the Cash at the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. Visotsky has completed 10 marathons, including four Boston Marathons, and this will be his ninth time participating in the 10k. In addition to his running exploits, he also serves as Business Manager at First Baptist Church and is a past president of the Virginia Society of CPAs. But there’s one more connection that will serve as his main motivation when he sets off on March 28th - his wife, Rhonda. She is a cancer survivor, and Tom has centered his efforts on raising money for the VCU Massey Cancer Center, an official event charity of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. “The whole focus of the race has been raising awareness and money for Massey,” Visotsky told CBS-6’s Virginia This Morning in late February. “It’s personal for us. Massey does great work, so it’s really motivating for me.” His original fundraising goal was set at $10,000, but Visotsky said that they now expect to raise $15,000. To that end, he pledged that if he wins the Dash, he’ll donate the $2,500 prize to Massey. And not that he’s planning on it, but if he were to come up short in the race, the money would be donated to Massey as well. So he sees the whole experience as a win either way. Visotsky, who has said that he’s always enjoyed the crowd support during the 10k, will be looking for plenty more to help him on the way to the finish line in the Dash, especially as he passes friends and colleagues at First Baptist Church at Monument and Boulevard. And, as you’d expect from an experienced runner, he’s already settled on a plan of attack. “I’m focusing on my normal pace to start,” Visotsky told Virginia This Morning. “Then I’m counting on the fans to cheer me to the finish line.” And with his commitment to family, community, and the Massey Cancer Center, he’s made sure he’ll be a winner regardless of whether or not he’s first to cross the finish line. www.sportsbackers.org 7 EVENT INFORMATION AT&T DASH FOR THE CASH Tom Visotsky has been chosen as the AT&T Dash for the Cash competitor and has a chance to win a $2,500 bonus prize. Tom’s race starts at 8:30 a.m. at a pre-determined starting position. When the starting gun goes off, he will dash for the finish line, followed closely by the elite runners. If Tom can out-run the fastest elite runner, the $2,500 AT&T Dash for the Cash prize is his for the taking! If not, the prize is donated to the VCU Massey Cancer Center. CARMAX FAN ZONE Spectators can cheer on participants as they ‘Drive to the Finish’ from the best spot on the course — the CarMax Fan Zone. Look for it at Stuart Circle, where there will be a DJ, refreshments, and cheering items, including cowbells, pom poms, foam fingers and sign-making materials for you to show your support and enthusiasm. Parking for the CarMax Fan Zone is available on local side streets. FINISHER MEDAL WILL RECOGNIZE YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT HEALTHY SCHOOL CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY THE VIRGINIA529 COLLEGE SAVINGS PLAN The Healthy School Challenge is a contest to see what middle school or high school can have the most students sign up for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. Prize money is awarded to the schools with the highest percentage of participation based on total school enrollment for schools competing in the middle school, high school, and small school divisions. Sports Backers provided training t-shirts to participants in the Healthy School Challenge who registered for the event by March 1. Visit the race website to see how the schools ranked. YMCA 10k TRAINING TEAM YMCA Training Team program extends its reach By Pete Woody Since its inception in 2002, the YMCA 10k Training Team has helped thousands of participants prepare to run or walk the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, and has grown to 19 locations throughout the Richmond area. With the help of hundreds of volunteer coaches, participants have achieved their race goals and used the training teams as a springboard to an active lifestyle all year round. There is always a great deal of enthusiasm each year for the training team, but two of this year’s new locations helped bring even more fresh energy to the program. The teams at Bellemeade Community Center in Richmond and the Bensley Sidekicks in Chesterfield were added to meet demand for participants in those areas and to bring increased fitness opportunities to underserved areas of the region in a fun, encouraging environment. “We are a smaller group, with only 22 people, and the biggest thing I have noticed at Bellemeade is how we have transformed from a training team into a family,” said head coach Kristen Callan. “For many participants, this is their first time in a detailed training program, and that has helped create a family atmosphere and share the excitement and nervousness of preparing for their first race.” Becky Hapeman, head coach at Bensley, echoed those sentiments. “With race day approaching, excitement is in the air!” said Hapeman. “We’ve got a friendly, open environment, and the goal is to always keep it fun while getting time to be active and on our feet.” While the 10-week training program is geared towards preparing for the 10k, the bigger goal is making the running and walking lifestyle accessible to so many new people. Based on experiences of coaches and participants at Bensley and Bellemeade, it appears that many steps have been taken, literally and figuratively, towards achieving that goal. “Bensley team members are already talking about participating in more races throughout the rest of the year, and they’re pushing each other to stay motivated,” said Hapeman. “I’ve loved seeing our team bond into a family!” “I do believe that the Bellemeade training team will help our participants continue to live an active lifestyle. A lot of our participants are taking the first step in becoming active,” added Callan. “We’ve talked about organizing weekly runs after the 10k is over and training as a group for other events. We hope to keep our momentum so we can double or even triple our numbers for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k in 2016 – but for now, we are all confident and ready for race day!” YMCA 10K TRAINING TEAM FOR THE UKROP’S MONUMENT AVENUE 10K In the YMCA 10k Training Team program created by the Sports Backers 12 years ago, you will find yourself in the company of almost 4,000 people with the same goals and ambitions. Led by veteran trainers Carrie Parker and Michelle Wright, this year’s crew started their hard work in mid-January. Ten weeks later they are off the couch and in the race. Congrats! If you or someone you know would benefit from this program, go to www.sportsbackers.org beginning in December and sign up for next year. www.sportsbackers.org 13 EVENT INFORMATION EVENT INFORMATION PAST 10K WINNERS MALE FEMALE 2000 Jared Segera 29:27 2000 Alisa Harvey 35:25 2001 Elly Rono 29:59 2001 Anna Pichrtova 34:57 2002 Reuben Chesang 29:32 2002 Lynbov Demisova 33:22 2003 Gilbert Koech 28:34 2003 Edna Kiplagat 32:28 2004 Reuben Chebii 28:07 2004 Tatyana Petrova 32:46 2005 Ernest Meli-Kimeli 28:43 2005 Tatyana Petrova 32:46 2006 Nicodemus Malakwen 28:31 2006 Magdalene Makunzi 32:33 2007 Teferi Bacha 28:29 2007 Magdalene Makunzi 32:24 2008 Abdi Abdirahman 28:32# 2008 Leah Kiprono 34:19 2009 Tilahun Regassa 28:21 2009 Amane Gemeda 32:37 2010 Alene Reta 28:26 2010 Megan Wright 33:06 2011 Julius Kogo 29:02 2011 Megan Wright 33:12 2012 Mengistu Nebsi 28:33 2012 Melisa Mejdoub 33:07 2013 Julius Kogo 28:18 2013 Ogla Kimaiyo 32:25 2014 Paul Chelimo 29:24* 2014 Kellyn Johnson 33:18* Bold indicates Race Record Race / *Collegiate Running Association 10k Road Race National Championships / #USA Track & Field Men’s 10k Road Race National Championship VIRGINIA529 KIDS RUN VIRGINIA529 KIDS RUN INFORMATION A half-hour before the 10k participants make their way down Monument Avenue, over 1,000 youngsters will line up for the 13th annual Virginia529 Kids Run. KIDS RUN RVA Impact of Kids Run RVA is Felt Across the Richmond Region By: Shihan Wijeyeratne Sports Backers has provided training programs for youth for 11 years, but in 2013 the organization expanded and rebranded these programs under one umbrella initiative – Kids Run RVA. Since that time the impact has grown rapidly. The last few months have been a period of exceptional growth. A national award, a successful crowdfunding campaign, the establishment of new run clubs in the region, and another year expected to bring over 1,000 kids to participate in the Virginia529 Kids Run and Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k are among Kids Run RVA’s most recent accomplishments and accolades. “Kids Run RVA really seems to have taken off in the last year,” says Faith Hecht, Youth Programs Coordinator at Sports Backers. “With the help of our amazing group of volunteers, coaches, and generous donors, we are encouraging more and more kids to get up and get moving.” In early February, Kids Run RVA received the Youth Event of the Year award from Running USA, which recognized the Call Federal Marathon, Jr. “We’re thrilled to have received such an honor,” says Hecht of the event, which took place in October 2014. “This award belongs to everyone in RVA that has contributed to our efforts – parents, coaches, volunteers, and so many others!” In late February, Kids Run RVA launched “Kicks for Kids,” a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of raising $4,000 to buy shoes for kids in run clubs in underserved areas. The campaign exceeded its goal and raised $4,260, all of which will go toward buying shoes for over 80 young runners who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford them. The core of Kids Run RVA is the run clubs it supports at over 50 schools and communities in the Richmond region. “Run clubs are the simplest way to get kids moving,” says Jacki Quinlan, Community Fitness Engagement Specialist at Sports Backers. “It gets them out and running, enjoying themselves with their friends and learning how good it feels to adopt an active lifestyle.” Elementary schools like A.M. Davis and Elizabeth Redd have training programs for their students to prepare for the Virginia529 Kids Run, part of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k on March 28. “The run clubs go far beyond simply helping the students increase their physical fitness,” says LaShawn Moore, Physical Education Teacher at Elizabeth Redd Elementary. “These kids are proud of themselves for what they’ve accomplished. This increased self-confidence has a positive impact that carries over into so many other parts of their lives.” Along with the elementary schools training for the Kids Run, a number of middle and high schools have training programs for the full 10k race. “In addition to schools that have had students train for the 10k for several years now, we have lots of new schools getting involved,” says Hecht. “We’re excited to see the launch of new training programs at schools like Thomas Jefferson High School and Henderson Middle School.” “Although we can always have more kids coming to the race, we’re definitely excited to see the increased level of interest from schools,” says Hecht. “We hope this trend continues in the coming years!” Kids Run RVA is an official charity partner of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k. Funds raised will be designated to promoting fitness to area youth, especially in underserved neighborhoods. To ensure you have enough 20 www.sportsbackers.org time to walk from the drop off point to the start line, please plan to arrive at your shuttle pick up location at least 90 minutes before your wave is scheduled to start. The drop off location is 11 blocks from the 10k start. • Each shuttle passenger must have a ticket to board the shuttle at the pick-up locations. • To expedite the purchase of shuttle tickets at the expo, cash is recommended. Make this a great experience for everyone by obeying these rules of the road. PREPARING FOR THE START • Pay attention to the pre‑race announcements. What you hear will not only help guide you through the course, but will also keep you safe. • Pin your race number on the front of your shirt. This is where it is most visible for race officials and allows you access to your Start Wave. Your race number also contains your timing device for the event. If you put it in the pocket of your shorts, the timing mats won’t be able to read it. Same thing if it is in your car — you won’t get a time. In order to receive an accurate time, please make sure that your race number is: unaltered and unmodified (do not 9fold 9 or wrinkle) pinned in all four corners 9not 9 covered (jackets, runner belts, 9water 9 bottles, etc.) Clearly displaying your race number also enables the official race photographers to identify you after the event. 22 www.sportsbackers.org DURING THE EVENT • Have fun and enjoy yourself. Run or walk no more than two abreast to allow for others to pass. If you are walking in a group, stay in the back of the pack. • Please don’t allow your non‑registered friends and relatives to run or walk with you in the race. They can cheer you on from the side of the road. • If you are getting water or POWERADE at an aid station, move to the side of the road to grab a cup from a volunteer and keep moving. If you want to stop and drink, move to the side of the road, out of the way of other runners after the aid station. Don’t go too far with your cup. The race volunteers will be collecting the cups and will appreciate not having to go on an extended “litter patrol.” • Remember, there are over 30,000 people around you! Please move to the side of the road to spit, throw up, tie your shoe, etc. • If nature calls, pull off the course and look for a port‑a‑potty. Do not expect the friendly neighbors to let you into their homes. • Feel free to shout words of encouragement to other participants. They will appreciate your cheers. • Pay attention to what is going on around you during the race. Just as in real life, expect the unexpected. Think loose dogs, lost kids, low branches, and looming potholes. APPROACHING THE FINISH • Remember to tell your non-registered friends and family NOT to cross the finish line with you. EVENT INFORMATION FINISH LINE • Don’t stop suddenly upon crossing the Finish Line – you’ll cause a collision with those behind you. Quickly move to the end of the finish line corral and exit the finish line area immediately. From there, you may follow the signs to the Post Race Food tents and Family Meeting Area. • Upon exiting the Finish Line Corral, there will be an area to meet your family and friends. Just tell them to meet under the sign listing the letter of the alphabet that corresponds to your last name. • Enjoy post‑race refreshments, but don’t be a piggy! Others want to enjoy the goodies too. Moderation is the key, so there’s food for the last people finishing the event. Post-race food is to help you recover from the run, not to stock your kitchen cupboards. www.sportsbackers.org 23 an tilly St t nA ve rk Pa Av e 76 195 Av e S F S 146 E. Matthew Fontaine Maury F.
