50th anniversary
Krannert
Art Museum’s
50th Anniversary
Celebration
Throughout the Spring and Fall of 2011, Krannert Art
Museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary with new
exhibitions and programming, as well as with many
ambitious projects and goals.
OPENSTUDIO
(Spring 2011) is a series of public programs in
conjunction with artist residencies intended to forge
interdisciplinary learning and cultural exchange
between students, faculty, the community, and
international visiting artists. Transforming the main
exhibition gallery into a learning laboratory, visiting
artists together with University of Illinois students
and faculty will inhabit and create active zones for
viewing, discussion, and experimentation.
Building a Modern Collection: A Look Back
(Spring 2011) is an exhibition of KAM works
purchased from the groundbreaking Contemporary
American Painting and Sculpture exhibitions
that took place on the U of I campus from 1948 to
1974. The works will be accompanied by archival
photographs and other printed materials.
At Fifty: Krannert Art Museum, 1961–2011
(Fall 2011) is an exhibition that celebrates the
extraordinary range of KAM’s collection. In a unique
and interactive architectural space, sculpture,
painting, video, photography, decorative objects,
and drawings will co-mingle. Objects from ancient
Greece and Latin America will be featured in
dialogue with 19th century European paintings
and 20th century video. Realism will sit astride
Abstraction, while photography and drawings will
illustrate how artists have represented humanity for
more than a century.
In the last few years, KAM has undergone changes
that are substantial, but ostensibly imperceptible
to the eye. These changes include installing wired
and wireless Internet in all public spaces and
replacing the building’s environmental and security
systems. By Fall 2011, renovations to KAM’s lobby
and many of its galleries should be very noticeable.
A new installation of the arts of Africa will be
particularly exciting.

KAM is revamping and expanding its educational
docent program. Nineteen docents began training
in Fall 2010. They will give tours with a partner in
Spring 2011 and will be full docents by Fall 2011.
New tours for school children and the general public
will be interactive and visitor-centered with a solid
foundation in art history and the social sciences.
KAM Council, the museum’s independent support
group, has set ambitious goals for this important
year, including:
Producing a successful 2011 Petals & Paintings that
will kick-off KAM’s 50th Anniversary Celebration;
Restoring and refreshing the The H.I. Gelvin and
Mabery D. Gelvin Garden which graces the main
entrance to the museum;
Implementing hard working and effective
museum development and museum membership
committees; and
Creating a successful 50/500 campaign that results
in 50 Director’s Circle Members of $1,000 and above
and a total of 500 membership households.
Significant new acquisitions in honor of KAM’s
50th anniversary are being added to the museum’s
collections.
Funds for new acquisitions, exhibitions, and
educational programming are being sought.
A special edition of the newsletter will highlight
the results of the above initiatives.
Considerable progress has been made organizing
KAM’s 50th Anniversary Celebration and reaching
these ambitious goals, but a great deal remains
to be done. We are counting on your help to take
advantage of this special moment for Krannert Art
Museum and our community.

A Look
Back
In honor of Krannert Art Museum’s 50th Anniversary
Celebration, KAM will be focusing on an installation
of works that speak to the strength of its permanent
collection. The Contemporary American Painting exhibition
at the University of Illinois began in 1948 with the foresight
of three individuals: University president George D.
Stoddard, dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts
Rexford Newcomb, and head of the Art Department Frank
Roos. These three visionaries were compelled to promote
contemporary art as well as build a collection for the
university. In 1953, sculpture was added and the exhibition
became known as the Contemporary American Painting
and Sculpture exhibition (CAPS). These exhibitions aimed
to showcase a stylistic cross-section of contemporary
American paintings and sculpture and coincided with the
campus-wide Festival of Contemporary Arts, which invited
such notables as artist Abraham Rattner, composer John
Cage, performers Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham,

writer Dylan Thomas, and many others to the university to
“improve the new art’s chances for acceptance.”
The exhibitions occurred annually for the first five years
and then biennially until 1974, with each installation
including over 100 individual works chosen by a committee.
The Urbana-Champaign communities voiced conflicting

The Kangarok Epic is comprised of
large-scale, ephemeral drawings that
are created by the Brooklyn-based
collaborative team of Mike Estabrook
and Ernest Concepción, known as The
Shining Mantis. These drawings are a
result of continuous performances from
January 26 through January 29. The act of
drawing becomes a public performance
as the artists draw directly onto the wall
with chalk. The drawings depict epic
battle scenes between the fictitious
mantids and demonic kangaroos that
once threatened life as we know it.

Iona Rozeal Brown’s paintings examine
the ways in which Japanese society
has appropriated African American

in Japan, Brown began exploring early

trend involved Japanese teenagers

SUPPORTING
KRANNERT ART
MUSEUM
The Friends of Krannert Art Museum currently
number approximately 350 households in
Champaign-Urbana and the surrounding
communities. It is our hope to increase the number
of Friends to 500 households throughout 2011, in
honor of KAM’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.
Membership dues provide the annual funding
that is critical to the ongoing operations of the
museum. All events, education programs, and
exhibitions are supported, in part, with membership
dollars. The Friends of Krannert Art Museum is an
invaluable group of loyal supporters who advocate
for activities and programs that enrich the lives
of those who choose to experience Krannert Art
Museum and keep it free and open to the public.
There are nine levels of yearly membership within
the Friends of Krannert Art Museum membership
structure: $15 Student; $45 Individual; $80 Dual/
Family; $150–$499 Benefactor; $500–$999 Patron;

in the Director’s Circle. Our goal is to increase
membership in this group to 50 households.
Director’s Circle members are devoted to ensuring
the long-term financial stability of the museum,
often directing 25% of their annual contribution to
the museum’s endowment.
All members enjoy private receptions prior
to exhibition openings and special Members’
Nights that include a catered reception and the
opportunity to interact with museum curators, staff,
and visiting artists. Beyond the personal benefits
of membership lies the knowledge that museum
members are, in part, responsible for making the
museum free and accessible to all.
Charitable contributions, based on personal choices,
can be made to help shape the future of Krannert Art
Museum as well. I would be very happy to have the
opportunity to explore with you the many options
that exist for providing private support.
I thank those of you who currently support KAM
through membership, and I encourage those of
you who have not yet experienced the museum as
a member to please consider bepcoming a part of
this essential group.
