Delaware State Forest in
Pike County, Pa., is a
glacier-carved
gem.
Thunder
Swamp
shines with creeks, 45
miles of trails, and unusual flora and fauna.
As part of the free
series Get Outdoors
Poconos, hikers are invited to join a naturalist-led, 1.5-mile outing
exploring part of this
extensive preserve.
Hikers will follow a
rocky path to see evidence of coyotes, big
slices of slate rising
from the ground, huge
boulders covered with
moss and ferns, sheep
laurel,
blueberries,
witch hazel, and wintergreen. Great blue
herons often survey
the swamps partially
maintained by beavers
– a chain of three lodges lines the west side
of the swamp.

Blue Barn is Blooming
Mom is happy and I finally have some peace of mind!
We were at an impass. We wanted Mom
to consider Personal Care but she was dead
set against it. She can manage just fine, she
insisted. I love her dearly and am happy to
do for her but I can only check on her so often and I worry constantly. She reluctantly
agreed to visit Walden III and they suggested
a compromise. Independent Living! There
are lovely apartments on the campus for
folks like Mom and you can select whatever
services you want from meals to housekeeping to medication reminders and more.
Well she shocked us all by signing up! She gets to retain her independence and
her dog which was a big concern and my Brother and I enjoy the comfort and security of knowing that help is always at hand. They see her every day when they deliver
her meals or come to clean or pick up her laundry and she has a call bell that can
summon help anytime of the day or night. Another plus is that she has made friends
with people both in the facility and the other apartments. So yes it was a compromise but in my view it was a win-win!
