That wasn’t his plan growing up, but fate has a way of stepping in to make the unexpected a reality. “I’m a third generation chairman of the association. My grandfather assumed this office in 1962, and my father in 1987,” Justin said. Justin is currently the owner and vice president of Cedric Theel Toyota Scion in Bismarck, N.D. His father, Cedric Theel, is still president of the operation. The dealership actually has its roots in Rolla, N.D., where Justin’s grandfather, Bruce Theel, got in the car business by opening Theel Motors, Kaiser-Frazer dealership in 1946. He soon changed over and became a General Motors dealer. Bruce’s son, Cedric, got the dealership bug and bought his first store in Bottineau after graduating from General Motors Institute and working for General Motors. Cedric then purchased a Dodge dealership in Bismarck in 1985 while also keeping the Bottineau store open. Over the years Cedric had opened four different franchises in Bismarck where the business remains a household name. As a child, Justin worked in the dealership and began learning about the business, from the ground up. “I got assigned many jobs nobody wanted to do – pulling weeds, picking up garbage, cleaning floor drains and washing cars,” he said. “I didn’t think I wanted any part of the dealership at that time.” and again took on many “ground floor opportunities” while also learning the ins and outs of running a business. He took part in the National Auto Dealers Association academy for potential dealership owners and graduated from that in 1999. Justin Theel “You learn a lot in that program. I worked in all of the departments the year I was in the NADA Academy, learning it all from the ground up. I call it my master’s degree in the auto business,” he said. A couple years after that, in 2001, he took over as general manager and then began to buy his father out. “Dad told me back then ‘this is the last promotion you’re ever going to get in this business’,” Justin said. Justin and First Lady Missy, and their two daughters, Shea, 9, and Reece, 6, reside in Bismarck. Over the years there have been many changes to the dealership. One of the biggest was the construction of a new building just off I-94 in east Bismarck in 2008. That was followed by the loss of the Dodge franchise when Chrysler went bankrupt. Now the dealership is a Toyota Scion franchise. “But through it all we have had a lot of excellent long term employees, some who have been with us since we bought the Dodge dealership in 1985,” Justin said. A very good high school hockey player, Justin went to Notre Dame on a hockey scholarship. However, an injury cut short that career. These days Justin sees membership in the ADAND as important as ever. “After graduation I looked at coaching opportunities in the United States Hockey League and other options, but after a while I realized the family car business looked like a pretty good opportunity,” he said. “Our biggest issues that we face as dealers are things that come out of Washington D.C.,” he said. “We need to keep a close eye on all the regulations that seem to be happening right now.” He returned to Bismarck and the business in 1998 Page 6 • ADAND 2011 Justin Theel continued on page 7 “You Just Have to Laugh!” David Naster grew up in a smart-alec family that taught him how to survive with humor, and he’s made his living making people laugh for 34 years. David’s first two books, “You Just Have To Laugh through Tough Times” and “When Work Gets TOUGH – You Just Have To Laugh” were voted “Best Humor” award of 2007 and 2008 by the Association of Applied Therapeutic Humor, an international organization of doctors, nurses and health-care professionals. David’s latest book, “Is there Laugh after Death” is a sincere and groundbreaking approach to offering humor in grief. David’s humor is compared to Robin Williams and Red Skelton, and his philosophies are embraced by notable personalities such as Patch Adams, Dr. Bernie Siegel, and the founder of Southwest Airlines, Herb Justin Theel from page 6 He said auto dealers need to stick together like they did through the bankruptcies and credit issues that they saw a few years ago. “When things are going well on a state or even a national level, the dealer organizations are probably the least utilized as they ever are,” he said. “But when things get tough – when Congress passes laws that are going to impact the auto dealers – that’s when the organization is very important. That’s when the work done during the easier times really pays off. “One dealer or one dealer organization can’t do it, but dealer bodies together have a lot of clout.” During his term as chairman, Justin said the major initiative of the organization was making major changes to franchise legislation laws. “That really helped strengthen our local dealerships,” he said. “It gave our franchise dealers a little more backbone when it came to dealing with manufacturers.” The staff of the organization is top notch when it comes to working on the issues and with the individual dealerships. “It starts with the people, many of which have been there for years. It’s a great staff that works with the Kelleher. “Humor in the workspace is a joke,” David says. “It's the ‘humor in your headspace’ that matters. It's your job to make yourself laugh not other people. Make the choice to think funny - it's your greatest weapon against stress, worry and fear.” David Naster “You Just Have to Laugh” – five words that will change the way you get through tough times. Don’t miss this hilarious, yet thought-provoking, presentation at our conference’s opening Super Session on Monday, November 14! dealers,” he said. “And I’ve told people many times that you won’t find a person more prepared than Matthew Larsgaard (ADAND President/CEO). We’re very lucky to have Matthew and to have him leading the organization. We have a solid organization from top to bottom.” Justin said it’s important for members to get involved in the organization. “The work of the organization is very important, not only for the dealership, but also the people working there and for the community in which they’re located,” Justin said, adding it’s also important for members to attend the convention. “Not only is the convention a good opportunity to learn about what’s happening in the industry on a national level, but what I take from it more than anything is the chance to visit with other dealers, to socialize and find out what’s happening, not only in your neighborhood, but across the state.” Justin and Missy welcome everyone to this year’s convention. “It will be a very upbeat conference with a lot of good speakers,” he said, adding that members will enjoy the camaraderie and lifelong friendships they’re building. Not surprising, given the facts of the matter: only 20% of employees are in a job that “fits;” 50% of all managers fail; 75% of all employees are looking for a new opportunity; and it costs 3 to 24 times a person’s annual pay to replace them. John Spader’s session on Tuesday morning, November 15, gets to the root causes of why this is so, as well as solutions for changing and improving. Using Spader’s Total Business Success™ Model, the session will cover the four distinct areas of developing a dealership: 1) financial strength and profitability 2) getting and keeping more customers 3) hiring, managing, and developing high-performing people and 4) seeing and adjusting with or ahead of the marketplace. Attendees are encouraged to step back and look at I t ’ s O u r t o their dealerships from a strategic point of view, comparing them to actual results from a benchmark group of dealerships in areas such as sales per employee, gross profit per employee, and Spader’s proprietary key expense ratios. Three types of growth curves will also be John Spader discussed, including market-driven growth, employee-driven growth, and management-driven growth.
