November 1 - November 22, 2015 Annual Missions
East White Oak Bible Church
Annual Missions Conference
November 1 - November 22, 2015
Welcome
In 2014, EWO missions and church leadership were challenged to
consider how we might mature in our efforts for the gospel of Jesus Christ
around the world. What an interesting challenge! Missionary sending and
support has been a focus of EWO from its beginning. In the 1960’s and 70’s
most missionaries connected to EWO were actually sent out from among us.
New phases of missions work in the 1990’s included short term trips to
support our partners. They introduced us to national partners along the way,
and today we work closely with people throughout Central and South
America, several parts of Africa, Europe & Asia. Types of involvement include
Evangelism, Church Planting, Education, Rescuing Vulnerable Children, Christian
Radio Networks, Theological Training and other endeavors.
During this past year, as we surveyed EWO missions involvement, one area of
work that needs to mature is taking the love of Jesus to what Acts 1:8 calls “…
the remotest part of the earth.” This year’s conference is designed to pull all
of us further into understanding what that work looks like. We are asking you to
participate in the special events designed to prepare us to follow Christ into
even harder places to do even harder things.

Conference Speakers
Luke h
Luke Hew up in the church, and turned to Christ for
salvation at the age of 19. After marrying Jenny, the
Lord called them into missions through their involvment in
InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and the Urbana missions
conferences. They joined AIM in 1990, with a desire to
reach Muslims with the saving love of Jesus. They have
served in several locations in East Africa for the last 20
years, all of them creative-access nations, among
Muslim people groups. The Lord has always led and
been faithful to them. In 2014, Luke became the
International Director of AIM (Africa Inland Mission International). Luke and Jenny have two daughters and
one grandson.
How do you define unreached people groups? Why are you passionate about working with them?
An unreached people group is an identifiable people group in which the church is non-existent, too small,
or too immature to reach their own people.  We are passionate about reaching unreached people
groups, because this is the essential task of mission: bring the gospel to people and places where there is
no gospel.
Please give a brief description of Islam.
Islam is a religious, social, and political system, founded by Mohamed about 1300 years ago.  Though it
contains much truth from the old and new testaments and acknowledges much that is true about Jesus, it
denies 2 fundamental Biblical truths about Him: His identity as the Son of God, and His redemptive work on
the cross.
Why are you interested in studying Islam?
There are around 1.5 billion Muslims alive today, living in every country on earth.  In recent years, there has
been a significant movement of Muslims into the Kingdom; more Muslims are coming to Christ
now than in any time in history.  But compared to 1.5 billion, the
number is still very small.

“My ship, and the Kin

JD CrowLey
JD Crowley has lived all his life in Asia and the Pacific
Rim. After pastoring a small church for 12 years on the
Big Island of Hawaii where he grew up, he and his wife,
Kim, were sent out by Hampton Park Baptist Church
and EMU International to reach the unreached tribes
of remote northeast Cambodia just as that country
was emerging from 20 years of communism. The
Crowleys have seen God plant his church in five
unreached people groups in 20 years. JD is the author
of Khmer and English commentaries on Matthew and Romans, as well as The Tampuan/Khmer/English
Dictionary. His most recent book, co-authored with Andy Naselli, is Conscience: What It Is, How to Train
It, and Loving Those Who Differ, to be released by Crossway this April. JD and Kim have 6 children and
four grandchildren.
How do you define unreached people groups?
“Missions has shown
us the power of God’s
saving gospel.”
We like to measure missions by these 6 benchmarks.
1. Have they heard the gospel clearly, and are there
believers?
2. Have the believers come together as a
worshipping and witnessing church?
3. Do the churches have pastors and deacons as described in 1 Timothy 3?
4. Are the churches reproducing new churches?
5. Are the pastors training the next generation of pastors?
6. Do they have a Bible in their own language? (Very long-term goal)
Why are you passionate about focusing your work on unreached groups?
From Genesis to Revelation, God himself focuses his salvation purposes on people-groups, not just
individuals nor the entire mass of humanity. In Matthew 24:14, Jesus said that the gospel had to be
preached to all nations (ethnicities) before the end would come.
Please give a brief description of animism..
“The belief that (1) personal spiritual beings and (2) impersonal spiritual forces have power over human
affairs and, consequently, that human beings must (1) discover what beings and forces are influencing
them in order to (2) determine future action and, frequently, (3) to manipulate their power.” (Gailyn
Van Rheenen, Communicating Christ in Animistic Contexts). Animism is the main religion in the world, indeed
the default religion of all mankind.
Why are you interested in studying animism?
During our studies together, we will discover that large portions of the Old and New Testaments seem to
be written specifically to rescue people from the fear of spirits to the the love of the true God.

Ever wonder what it takes to really reach people in remote parts of the world? Places difficult to
live in? People difficult to connect with? Our missions team is excited to bring two speakers who
have done just that.
In this first of two events, we will meet Luke and Jenny H. After receiving medical training in Peoria,
Luke and Jenny (a nurse), moved to Africa in 1990 to reach Muslims with the saving love of Jesus.
They have served in several creative-access nations in East Africa for 20 years. We will learn from
them the challenge of bringing Christ to all nations. Dessert will be served at 6:30, followed by an
interview with our guests.

none of which had their language written. Come learn how Christ has used the Crowleys and others to grow His church in five different language groups. Become better equipped to understand
and pray for the churches in North East Cambodia. Dinner will be served at 5:00, followed by an

evening connecting with Annamarie as she shares her life’s story with the ladies of EWO. Dessert will
be served at 7:00.
