FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
This coming Wednesday 18, when we will celebrate Ash Wednesday, we will hear: Rend your hearts, not
your garments, and return to the Lord, your God (Jl 2:13). These words will give beginning to the season
of Lent, which points out “to the conversion of heart as the chief characteristic of this season of
grace.” (Pope Francis, 05/05/14) And through the practices of prayer, fast and almsgiving as a way to unite
ourselves with the Passion of our Lord, we will be led to the celebration of the Holy Week, the greatest
week of all Christianity.
On such day, we, the faithful, according to an ancient custom are exhorted to approach the altar and to
attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, where the priest, dipping his thumb into ashes previously blessed,
will mark the forehead of each with the sign of the cross, saying the words: Remember man that thou art
dust and unto dust thou shalt return. “The act of putting on ashes symbolizes fragility and mortality, and
the need to be redeemed by the mercy of God. Far from being a merely external act, the Church has
retained the use of ashes to symbolize that attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called
during Lent.” (Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy) Therefore, this simple but profound sign is
meant to express our desire to do penance, seek repentance and stir up contrition in our hearts for our sins.
The liturgical use of ashes originates in Old Testament times. For instance, in the Book of Esther,
Mordecai put on sackcloth and ashes when he heard of the decree of King Ahasuerus of Persia to kill all of
the Jewish people in the Persian Empire. (Est 4:1) Job repented in sackcloth and ashes. (Job 42:6)
Prophesying the Babylonian captivity of Jerusalem, Daniel wrote, I turned to the Lord God, pleading in
earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes. (Dn 9:3) So as you see, these Old Testament examples
evidence both a recognized practice of using ashes and a common understanding of their symbolism.
In fact, Jesus Himself also made reference to ashes. Referring to towns that refused to repent of sin
although they had witnessed the miracles and heard the good news, our Lord said, If the miracles worked
in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have reformed in sackcloth and ashes long ago. (Mt
11:21)
In our present liturgy for Ash Wednesday, we use ashes made from the burned palm branches distributed
on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. The ashes are sprinkled with holy water and later incensed. The
celebrant himself, receives the ashes from some other priest, usually the highest in dignity of those present.
In earlier ages a penitential procession often followed the rite of the distribution of the ashes, but this is not
now prescribed.
The message of Ash Wednesday is expressed with the words of St. Paul in the second reading for that day:
We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be
reconciled to God. For our sake, he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become
the righteousness of God. (2 Cor 5:20-21)
Therefore, the significance of Ash Wednesday is not limited to remind us of death and sin; it is also a loud
call to overcome sin, to be converted. Both of these express collaboration with Christ. During Lent we
have before our eyes the whole divine “economy” of grace and salvation.” In this time of Lent let us
remember not to accept the grace of God in vain (2 Cor 6:1).
Jesus Christ himself is the most sublime grace of Lent. It is He himself who appears before us in the
admirable simplicity of the Gospel, of its words and its works. He speaks to us with the might of his
Gethsemane, of the judgment before Pilate, of the scourging, of the crowning with thorns, of the via crucis,
of his crucifixion: with everything that can shake man’s heart. Thus, we can say: everything about Lent is
countercultural.
Dear Parishioners, I would love that each one of us can pray in the same word that St. John Paul II prayed
in his first Ash Wednesday as a Pope: “Filled with the depth of today’s liturgy, I, with all my Brothers and
Sisters in the one faith of our Church, say to you, Christ: Have mercy on me, O God, according to thy
abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy
Spirit from me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Restore to me
the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit (Ps 51).
I wish you all a very fruitful season of Lent.

Let us now continue discussing the
virtue of obedience, in which children
need to be trained since their early
years.
Motives for Being Obedient
“From the age of five his motivation to obey
starts to change. At first he can obey with the
sort of motivation which allows his obedience to
be a virtue: he obeys because of his parents’ authority. Even though this authority is never lost,
parents need to use other complementary methods in order to get him to obey because of their
authority but now understanding the process
better.
From five onwards parents need to make explicit demands on their children and give reasons
for those demands, so that the child obeys because he sees it reasonable to do so. He can also
obey out of affection for his parents, knowing
that his obedience is a way of showing that affection.
From the age of thirteen or thereabouts, it is
good for obedience to be the result of a thoughtful attitude. And the motivation for obeying
should be consistent with the values which the
young person is beginning to apply more consciously in his life.”

Fasting and Abstinence During Lent: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays
during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full
