In addition to using trouble-free
recipes, here are a few more tips for getting children involved in the kitchen.
Unveil the inner chef. Teach the
basic cooking fundamentals by allowing kids to measure ingredients,
season recipes or brush marinade on
chops or chicken before grilling, baking or sautéing.
Sticky, drippy and just plain
icky. Avoid unnecessary messes and
spills by rinsing and stacking used
dishes in the sink as you cook, and
storing ingredients away after using.
No boo-boos. Ensure safety by
using blunt scissors, plastic knives or
serrated dinner knives when slicing
meats, fruits and vegetables.
Keep it simple. Remember that
kids have short attention spans and
lose interest quickly. Prepare easy

1 package (18 ozs.) Nestlé Toll
House Refrigerated Mini Sugar Cookie Bar Dough
3-inch alphabet cookie cutters
2 cups powdered sugar
1⁄
2 cup Strawberry Flavor Nestlé
Nesquik Syrup
1-2 tablespoons water
Small tubes decorator icing
Decorator candies
Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Sprinkle flour over cutting board or
kitchen work surface. Break off 2
rows of cookie dough. Roll out dough
to about 1⁄8-inch thickness, using
additional flour as needed to prevent
sticking.
Press cookie cutters into dough and
transfer letters to ungreased baking
sheets with spatula.
Bake 8-10 minutes or until golden.
Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes;
remove to wire racks to cool completely.
Combine sugar, Nesquik and water
in medium bowl; beat with whisk or
hand-held mixer until smooth. Spread
icing over cookies. Allow icing to dry
before adding any additional decorations.
Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

Babe the black and white Pit Bull Terrier is amazing us more every time we work with her. She
responds to a confident leader who is calm and
assertive. Probably almost 2, Babe is a stocky
girl whose favorite workout begins with a waterhose! She loves to splash around under the
spray and makes us laugh to no end. She looks
like a very large Boston Terrier with her black and
white markings. On her walks, she relaxes and
really loves to move beside you. The other day I
put her in a distracting position. She was tuckered out from her walk and I led her along the
row of barking dogs at the kennels. Normally she
would have barked back, but she has learned
that she can be calm, focused and relaxed on a
leash. When you are the alpha, she will follow!
She can relax and so can you! We see people
struggle all the time with dogs on a lead or who
are afraid of Pit Bulls. Babe is a joy! Already
spayed, heartworm-negative and current with her
shots, she will need a fenced-in yard when she is

Blondie the White Lab Mix just makes you want to

Gretchen, our year-and-a-half black lab, is
ready for her family. Her kennel is always clean;
she sits and can lie down. But more than anything she gets all A’s in loving. You would never
be sorry she came to live at your house, unless
you were a diabetic. In that case you would want
to limit your intake of sugar because she is
already so sweet. If I could have another dog, I
would pick her, but my husband says 3 in the
house and over 20 with the rescue group are
just too many. If she were my dog I would kiss
her a lot every day and play ball in the back yard
until supper. We would go on long walks or for
car rides. She would be my constant companion. In the evening when she would lie at the
end of my bed, I would count myself really
blessed by the Lord. This dog came through

Dog okay with cats! Riley the Plott hound and
mountain cur mix is a mellow fellow in his out
pen, but he loves to run in the open air or on a
leash. He does not pull one bit even though he
weighs almost 60 lbs. We like this big, healthy
dog a lot. He’s beautiful, has had his shots, is
neutered and is heartworm negative. Dr.
Spencer says he’s got 4 of this mixed breed. He
really likes them! We think he would make a
great house dog with outside running around in
the yard privileges He is so good-natured and
longs to be close to people. We get the idea that
someone at one time was unkind to him
because he cowers a little at first. He’s such a
good boy with golden Asian eyes and a personality that is as sweet as they come. He’s about 2
and the perfect size to sit on the couch with you.

MoJo, the small, shy, black Pit Bull, was voted Most
Obedient Dog by his kennel mates this afternoon.
You see, he plays very hard on the yard and then
comes right back in for his meal every time, but he
is not warm and fuzzy. He tries not to be shy, but he
just can’t help it. He is a follower and we are trying
to play the roll of a calm, confident pack leader.

Mr. Tibbs is so ugly he’s cute. Someone asked us
the other day what kind of dog he was and I said:
He weighs 11 lbs., has a Pekinese underbite,
Dachshund legs, Chihuahua body, Pug tail and
heart of pure gold. He dances on his back feet when
he wants your attention and we should probably
hold onto him and train him for Hollywood. The day
he leaves Misplaced Pets at Holly Lake Ranch, we
are going to bawl our eyes out unless he goes to
live with some very special people who will buy him
outfits for Christmas and kiss him 1,000 times a
day! He s crate-trained and house-trained. I have
already promised Carolyn that if God calls her

Unable to hold a pencil, the canines voted by a raise

Statistics at the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. (Whew!)
According to them I will live to be
75.5 years old, statistically speaking.
Yippie. Yahoo. Ya-ba dab-a do.
Unfortunately on July 1, 2006, I
turned 76.
Drifting and dreaming
Do you get my drift? I’m already a
month and one half over the line.
Statistically speaking, I am a dead
man walking.
My child bride, Roza, on the other
hand, is going to live until 2022—statistically speaking, of course.
How fair is that? And she will be
quite well off too, I might add.
Of course she will. She’ll probably
inherit all of my money and marry a
young stud muffin.
If I were a woman I could expect to
live until around 2012. Never before
had the thought of a sex-change operation had so much appeal. A six-year
reprieve of my death sentence might
be reason enough to switch.
Until waking this morning, I had not
felt close to meeting the grim reaper,
but after reading the statistics I felt a
bit, well, unwell. Perhaps I really
should be getting my affairs in order.
Wait. What affairs? I don’t have
any affairs.

Now I’m back to thinking about
that expensive sex-change operation again.
Aging is great
Here’s another
brilliant piece of their
rationale: “. . . The
older you are today,
the greater the age
you are likely to
reach.”
Say what?
It just keeps getting better and better.
They tell me that if
I am able to live until
I am 85 (that’s only nine
years away) the odds are
good that I’ll reach 91.
See how one stepping-stone leads very logically to the next? When I took statistics eons ago at Baylor, the best I can
remember it seemed to be a rather
dull and boring course.
Now, however, I am gaining a new
fascination with the subject.
Just when I was getting to feel better, they insert a caveat towards the
end, under the subtitle “How Long
Will You Live?”
They admit that all of the statistics
they just quoted me may sound “comforting . . . but statistics are just statistics.”
Oh, great. They’re starting to
weasel on me again.
“To get a clearer idea of your own
destiny, researchers at the San
Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical
Center recently put together what is
called a mortality quiz.” (Translation:
death quiz.)
It consists of just 12 simple questions that will show my chances of
dying within the next four years, but
they warn, “No laboratory or performance tests are required, but you
must be truthful to yourself when
answering the questions.”
Well, that lets me out.
Naturally, I’m going to lie.
So what about it? Do you think I
took the test or not?
Damn right, and I got my answer
back faster than you can say drop
dead.
According to the S.F. Veterans
Affairs, I have an 85 percent chance
of living four more years, statistically
speaking.
Now, if I were a woman, I would
have a 96 percent chance of living
four more years, statistically speaking
again, of course.
Be true to yourself
But there appears to be one last
hope.
Take five
What’s the use of worrying? Nothing’s going to turn out all right in the
end anyway.
I’ll check back with you in four
years and let you know if I’m still
above ground. If not, I’ll leave a few
bucks in my will for some trusted
friend to send my regrets.
Until then, please do not put too
much confidence in statistics or statisticians.
Live well, love well, laugh well,
smell the roses and savor the moment.
That’s my advice, and I’m sticking
to it.
