Regional author tour
Seth Gordon knows exactly what he wants to do with his life: play video games. A fifteenyear-old math prodigy, his every spare minute is devoted to honing his skills at Starfare, the
world’s most popular computer game. His goal: South Korea, where the top pros are rich
and famous. But the best players train all day long. Seth has school and a job and divorced
parents who agree on only one thing: “Get off that damn computer.” Plus, there’s a new
distraction named Hannah, an aspiring photographer who actually seems to understand his
obsession.
Team Anaconda, one of the leading Korean pro squads, sees something special in Seth. His
dream comes true! Before he knows it, it’s goodbye Kansas and Hannah, hello to the strange
new world of Korea. But the reality is more complicated than the fantasy, as he faces culture
shock, disgruntled teammates, and giant pots of sour-smelling kimchi.
What happens next surprises Seth. Slowly, he comes to make new friends, and discovers
what might be a breakthrough, mathematical solution to the challenges of Starfare. Delving
deeper into the formula takes him in an unexpected direction, one that just might give him
a new focus—and reunite him with Hannah.
Lawrence Tabak started off with Candy Land before hitting the harder stuff. His writing has
appeared in numerous national magazines and journals, including Fast Company, Salon.com,
and The Atlantic Monthly. He and his wife have raised two game-obsessed boys.
"In Real Life is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of high-octane competitive
computer gaming. It reminded me of Cory Doctorow's work, which I also love. Highly recommended!"
—Mike Mullin, award-winning author of Ashfall
"This is a great book for teens who love games and who just might love the mathematics behind them."
—Lee Ki-Suk, Professor (Korea National University of Education, Department of Mathematics Education)

Cupcake Envy
Irresistible Little Cakes That are Fun and Easy
sy
Amy Eilert
Norm Davis, foreword
Corey Brinkmann, photographer
Everybody loves cupcakes—and they're downright irresistible when fashioned into
charmingly familiar forms. Amy Eilert, a celebrated cake decorating expert and the owner
of Cupcake Envy in North Carolina, specializes in turning tasty cakelets into sensational
and unexpected forms. Her wildly creative cupcake designs have been featured on
DailyCandy.com, The Food Network, the Ugly Betty show and in Brides Magazine. At last,
Eilert shows how even novice bakers can create show-stopping cupcake versions of everything from a stylish party dress and an adorable baby bottle to a desktop cigar humidor and
a voodoo doll.
In her cookbook debut, Eilert provides detailed and easy-to-follow instructions on how
to use ordinary baking pans to create the basic design, and then customize the colors and
details to suit every taste. Can’t be bothered with baking from scratch? No problem! Every
cupcake can be made with store-bought mix, toppings, and fondant, freeing readers to
unleash their creativity on the shaping and decorating. Featuring designs for every occasion
and a foreword by award-winning pastry chef Norm Davis, Cupcake Envy will educate and
delight both beginner and expert cake decorators.
In 2006, Amy Eilert founded Cupcake Envy in Wake Forest, North Carolina. A certified
instructor at CakeCentral.com, Eilert travels throughout the U.S. and Canada teaching
classes and judging national cake competitions, including That Takes The Cake Sugar Art
Exhibition and Cakelove 2011. www.CupcakeEnvy.com
Norm Davis is an award-winning author, chocolatier, and
pastry chef.
“Little works of art to satisfy your sweet tooth.”

Bountiful Bonsai
Create Beautiful Indoor Container Gardens
with Edible Fruits, Herbs and Flowers
Richard Bender
Bonsai—the Japanese art of training plants to form elegant sculptures—is an age-old craft
that appeals to gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Traditional bonsai requires expensive
plants and years of tedious work. This book presents a radical new approach that applies
bonsai techniques to everyday houseplants, instantly turning them into beautiful bonsai
sculptures!
Bonsai expert Richard Bender not only expects his plants to look good but to yield
pleasant fragrances, fresh herbs and fruits for his table. He shows readers how to create
“instant bonsai” by shaping a range of common house plants, including:
• Fragrant hibiscus and jasmine
• Kitchen herbs such as rosemary and thyme
• Luscious fruits like cherries and oranges
• Medicinals such as tea tree and camphor laurel
This beautifully illustrated volume provides all the information you need to get started,
from plant choice advice to care requirements and bonsai “carving” tips. Suitable for indoor
bonsai, or shaping exquisite bonsai fruit trees for outside gardens, Bender turns a finicky
art into a hobby accessible to all. Bonsai have graced Japanese homes for centuries, now
they can yield useful crops that will simultaneously satisfy your artistic sensibility and also
provide some wonderful meals!
Richard Bender operated Bonsai by Bender for twenty years. He is the author of Herbal
Bonsai and writes for several publications, including Horticulture, Field & Stream, and The
Herbal Companion.

Handmade Bags in Natural Fabrics
Over 25 Easy-to-Make Purses, Totes and More
Emiko Takahashi
There is no better project for the eco-conscious crafter than a simple cloth bag. Handmade
Bags in Natural Fabrics offers patterns for twenty-five basic bag styles along with sixty
variations and the know-how to customize each bag to suit any style—from sweet-andinnocent to minimalist to counter-culture.
Emiko Takahashi, a fashion and textiles designer, provides easy instructions and diagrams,
as well as a sheet of fully-sized pattern pieces for each handmade bag project—plus easy
lessons on the basics of hand-stitching drawstring casings, corners, edges, straps, and simple
flourishes. Cotton and linen bags are always useful and they lend a carefree, laid-back touch
to any warm-weather outfit. Each bag can be machine-sewn, but they are designed to be

• Envelope Pouches
• Bucket Bags
• Picnic Totes

• Classic Drawstrings
Japanese craft books enjoy a cult following in the United States, and Handmade Bags in
Natural Fabrics has all the elements of a classic in the making.
Emiko Takahashi is a graduate of the Bunka School of Fashion. Her fabric collection Emiko
Takahashi Fabric Harmony is popular in Japan for its soft colors and elegant prints.

Wrapping With Fabric
Your Complete Guide to Furoshiki
The Japanese Art of Wrapping
Etsuko Yamada
Kanji Okamoto, photographer
Long before today’s eco-friendly philosophy of “reduce, reuse, recycle” entered America’s
collective consciousness, furoshiki—the Japanese method of wrapping things with
fabric—flourished as a time-honored and practical art form. In Wrapping With Fabric,
Etsuko Yamada—born into a long-line of furoshiki makers in Kyoto—explains the “one
cloth, many uses” ideology behind the craft, the etiquette of color and the craft’s
fascinating history. From there, she shares the myriad ways in which a few basic techniques
can transform a simple square of cloth into an elegant wrapper you can use to:
• Gift-wrap anything from books to flowers
• Bundle up a picnic
• Tote items ranging from wine bottles to yoga mats
• Use as a handbag or backpack
• Make into a pillow covering
• Create decorative coverings for vases, tissue boxes, and more
A quiet reminder that opportunities for artistry are everywhere around you, Wrapping With
Fabric makes it easy to bring a touch of grace and ingenuity to everyday life—and help
preserve the environment, too.
Etsuko Yamada studied art before becoming a textile designer and table
coordinator. She is the art director for Tokyo’s Kyoto Wa-Bunka Institute
MISUBI, the first shop specializing in furoshiki in Japan, where she works on
product development, as well as new ways of using furoshiki to suit the needs
of today’s world.
Kanji Okamoto is a freelance photographer.

Mei-Mei is Chinese—but not Mom and Dad! When she was a baby, Mom and Dad flew all
the way to the other side of the world to adopt her and bring her home. Lucky for Mei-Mei,
her parents want her to know all about her roots in China’s wonderful culture. That’s why,
on her birthday, her mom always makes her a traditional Chinese treat—long noodles, for a
long and happy life. And this year, Mei-Mei is big enough to help her mom make them!
Through a simple story and bright illustrations, Mei-Mei’s Lucky Birthday Noodles takes
young readers through this special day, from the moment an excited Mei-Mei wakes up in
the morning and puts on her favorite dress, through helping Mom measure water, clean
veggies and rinse noodles, to a great birthday celebration with family and friends. After the
story comes a kid-friendly recipe for this tasty traditional dish. Younger kids can help Mom
or Dad—just like Mei-Mei—while older kids can make it themselves, with supervision.
Along with the birthday excitement and a great Chinese treat, readers will see the adoptive
experience at its best—a lot of love and the sharing of roots, showing both parents and kids
one of the many ways adopted children from all over the world can learn about the country
they come from and take pride in its culture.
Accomplished chef Shan-Shan Chen has been a regular
guest on California’s show The View from the Bay, where
she demonstrates to viewers how to prepare inexpensive
and delicious Chinese dishes. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese,
she enjoys sharing the richness of Chinese culture with
people of all backgrounds.
Heidi Goodman specializes in watercolors and, of course,
she loves books and cooking. She lives in California with
her husband and two sons.

Robert Choi
SamEe Back, illustrator
In Korean Folk Songs, music teacher Robert Choi shares 14 of Korea’s best-loved classic
favorites—with musical scores and lyrics in both Korean and English. Born and bred in
Chicago, Choi’s Korean parents raised their son with a keen appreciation for their native
culture. The traditional melodies they taught him left a deep impression. Included in this
collection are well-known children’s songs such as “Splashing Around” and “Mountain
Rabbit” that incorporate fun-to-do actions and gestures. Also traditional standards that
have been passed down from generation to generation, such as “Blue Birds” and “Arirang.”
Each song features a musical score with the lyrics in Korean script and romanized form,
and an English version of the lyrics. Historical and cultural notes are included and for the
children’s songs, Choi describes the accompanying actions. An audio CD contains recordings
of all the songs, along with tracks that allow you to sing along. Every page has beautiful
full-color illustrations of traditional Korean scenes by the talented Korean artist SamEe Back.
Just as songs like “Home on the Range” or “Oh! Susanna” are part of traditional American
culture, the songs in Korean Folk Songs are a valuable resource for anyone with an interest
in Korean culture, history and language.
From an early age, Robert Choi learned traditional Korean folk songs and was introduced to
Korean culture through food, music, language, and martial arts. Previously a member of the
Singapore Symphony Orchestra, he currently serves as a full-time music educator.
Illustrator SamEe Back lives in Seoul where she studies Visual Design at Duksung Women's
University. Korean Folk Songs is her first work of published illustrations

• 2015 is the “Year of the Sheep” starting
on February 19, 2015
Long, long ago, there lived a kind physician. He lived
on a mountain in a small Chinese village where he
practiced traditional Chinese medicine for all the
villagers. On his way home one day, he found an
injured sheep, rescued it and brought it home where he nursed the sheep back to life.
One evening, after the sheep had been living with the physician for some time, a beast
barged into the village, demanding payment of each household in the form of one child. If
the villagers refused to hand over their children, the beast would eat everyone!
In the blink of an eye, the rescued sheep transforms into a lovely girl, who, with a clever
plan, manages to frighten the beast away and keep everyone in the village safe from harm.
And so, with one simple act of kindness, an entire village is saved, reminding us that every
action, no matter how small, has consequences.
Formerly a middle school art teacher and editor for children’s books, Li Jian currently owns

The Forbidden City and the World of Small Animals
Nancy S. Steinhardt, editor
Brian Tse
Alice Mak, illustrator
Ben Wang, translator
Rabbit is eating breakfast with his friends Baby Squirrel, Young Porcupine, and Little Brother
Panda when an unexpected visitor arrives. He is a master builder, searching for inspiration
to design a great palace for the Emperor of China. Together, Uncle Builder and the little
animals explore how nature supplies us with the wonders that enrich our lives.
Created by internationally renowned children’s book artists Brian Tse and Alice Mak, this
book teaches children about Chinese architecture, how nature’s influence can be seen
around us, and how people and animals can live together in harmony. The illustrations
capture both the majesty of the natural world and the Forbidden City and are enhanced by
interactive components for readers, including a gatefold spread and lift-flaps.

Japanese Design
Art, Aesthetics & Culture
Patricia J. Graham
What exactly is the singular attraction of Japanese design? And why does it speak so clearly
to so many people all over the world?
The Japanese sensibility often possesses an intuitive, emotional appeal, whether it’s a silk
kimono, a carefully raked garden path, an architectural marvel, a teapot, or a contemporary
work of art. This allure has come to permeate the entire culture of Japan—it is manifest in
the most mundane utensil and snack food packaging, as well as in Japanese architecture,
and fine art.
In Japanese Design, Asian art expert and author Patricia J. Graham explains how this
aesthetic based in fine craftsmanship and simplicity developed. Her unusual, full-color
presentation reveals the Japanese design aesthetic in an absorbing way, using a combination
of insightful explanations and more than 160 stunning photos. Focusing upon ten elements
of Japanese design, Graham explores how visual qualities, the cultural parameters and the
Japanese religious traditions of Buddhism and Shinto have impacted the appearance of its
arts.
Japanese Design is a handbook for the millions of us who have felt the special allure
of Japanese culture, crafts, and art. Art and design fans and professionals have been
clamoring for this—a book that fills the need for an intelligent, culture-rich overview of
what Japanese design is and means.
Patricia J. Graham is an author, lecturer, and professional consultant on Asian art. She
is a certified appraiser who works with private collectors, museums, attorneys, insurance
companies, auction houses, and universities. Her books include Faith and Power in Japanese
Buddhist Art, 1600–2005, and Tea of the Sages: The Art of Sencha, both published by the
University of Hawaii Press. www.patriciagraham.net

Malaysian Batik
Reinventing a Tradition
Noor Azlina Yunus
Malaysian Batik: Reinventing a Tradition, traces the
origins of batik, the materials, methods and motifs
of the block-stamped and hand-drawn methods,
and the ways in which Malaysian batik has been
transformed into a product of international appeal.
With its bold designs—striking abstracts and
energetic floral forms—brighter palette and
innovative color combinations, Malaysian batik has
brought an exciting new dimension to an ancient
way of decorating undyed fabric using molten wax,
metal stamp and stylus.

Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game
A Collector’s Guide to Mah Jongg Tiles and Sets
Ann M. Israel
Gregg Swain
Michel Arnaud, photographer
Tom Sloper, contributor
Milton Stern, contributor
Enter the fascinating world of Chinese collectibles with Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game.
This is the first book to fully capture this exotic and exciting aspect of Mah Jongg (also
known as mah jong and mahjong) by taking an intimate look at its history and the physical
b
beauty of the tiles and sets.
W
When authors Ann Israel and Gregg Swain began playing Mah Jongg, they were unaware of
the vintage collections that existed not only in the United States but as far away as South
Afric
Africa and New Zealand. Slowly, they started their own collections. As their collections grew,
so did their appreciation for the history of the game.
Find
Finding few references, Israel and Swain set out to create a book that chronicles the early
beginnings of the game and documents Mah Jongg sets from the most basic types—made
simply of paper—to the most outrageous and opulent sets made from gold. Respected
scholars and game experts collaborated with Israel and Swain on this book, contributing
chapters on the game's history and its pieces as well as technical information about the tiles
themselves. Great collectors from around the globe have shared their incredible sets and
memories for the first time in one book that every Mah Jongg enthusiast will enjoy.
"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Whether
used as a reference or a beautiful keepsake,
it's a very worthy addition to the world of
Mah Jongg."
—Ruth Unger, President,
National Mah Jongg League
Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game includes hundreds of beautiful new images by renowned
photographer, Michel Arnaud, along with historical documentation and ephemera that fill
the void between the past and today's game. Through this book, you too can become an
enthusiast of the timeless game of Mah Jongg!
Ann M. Israel grew up in Detroit and now lives in New York City. She has been writing
Advice for the Lawlorn, a weekly syndicated column for attorneys published by American
Law Media since 1994.
Gregg Swain grew up and continues to live in New York City, where she developed her
love and knowledge of art. She loves Mah Jongg because it allows her to socialize with
wonderful friends while playing with beautiful tiles.

Insun Lee
This new edition of Elementary Korean, the most comprehensive introductory Korean textbook
available, offers beginning learners of Korean everything they need to learn the language
effectively. Perfect for first-year university-level course use or for independent language
learners. No prior knowledge of the language is necessary. The new format, now with dozens
of illustrations, presents vocabulary, grammar, conversations, and exercises in a way that makes
Korean accessible and understandable. This edition includes:
• Realistic dialogues with audio recordings
• Detailed grammar and cultural notes
• Plenty of writing practice and exercises
Dialogues, readings and written exercises are in Hangul, the Korean alphabet, so students are
quickly able to read and write authentic Korean. Layered lessons are designed to build on each
other, making this the most popular introductory Korean language textbook available. Included
is a revised audio CD that helps learners speak like a native, and a web-based practice component through the University of British Columbia that can help students learn Korean beyond
the pages of this book. According to the Modern Language Association, enrollment in Korean in
American universities is growing rapidly.
Elementary Korean Workbook is packed with practice exercises, audio and written activities,
and guided composition skill-builders. Elementary Korean Workbook, with its accompanying
audio disc, helps beginning-level learners solidify and polish their Korean in every skill area.

Essential Korean Grammar
Your Essential Guide to Speaking and
Writing Korean Fluently!
Laura Kingdon
Do you want to improve your Korean language skills? Essential Korean Grammar offers
exactly what you need to speak and write grammatically correct Korean sentences.
Other books may explain that ࿌໏ and ၒఁଆ both roughly mean “so,” but they don’t
teach you when to use each form. Essential Korean Grammar gives you the best
grammatical options for each situation, and explains when to use each option.
The grammatical forms are cleverly graded so you can determine which ones are most useful
for you to study, based on your knowledge level. There is a star rating system, from 5 stars
(“critical”) to 1 star (“don’t worry about this unless you are taking the TOPIK exam”).
Essential Korean Grammar is a toolbox to help you form correct and natural-sounding
sentences. It details:
• Correct sentence patterns for each type of word
• Commonly used idiomatic expressions
• Common errors to watch out for
The example sentences use simple vocabulary that even a beginner will know. This
is the perfect book to use in reviewing for exams or to brush up on your Korean
when you will be traveling to Korea after some years of not using the language.
Laura Kingdon is a graduate of Yonsei University’s Korean Language Institute. She
is fluent in several languages and runs a translation firm. After years of living in
Seoul, she recently moved to Thailand.

Writing Japanese uses three different types of characters: the Chinese characters known as
kanji, plus two sets of phonetic characters, hiragana and katakana, that must be mastered
before the kanji can be learned. Learning Japanese Hiragana and Katakana is a best-selling

exercises. Free downloadable audio recordings that accompany the text demonstrate the
correct pronunciations for all the characters, vocabulary, and sentences in the book.
Learning Japanese Hiragana and Katakana provides beginning-level students with a
thorough grounding in the basic hiragana and katakana phonetic symbols. A comprehensive
introduction presents their basic function, origin, pronunciation and usage. The main body

Zhang Jiaofei
Wang Jing
In China, the rhythms of time and nature are understood to affect the body and general
health and wellbeing. Traditional Chinese medicine incorporates the ebbs and flows of time
into achieving and maintaining good health. The cycle of four seasons is a complete circulation and the same is true of the 24-hour day. Understanding this kind of “body clock” is
what The Body Clock Guide is all about, regardless of whether or not you are a practitioner
of TCM.
In ancient China, a day was divided into 12 two-hour periods. In each two-hour period there
is a different channel or collateral with vital energy “on duty.” This book uses descriptive
illustrations and texts to clearly explain how to utilize the theories of collaterals and
channels, including:
• How to read signals from your body
• Prompts for the schedule of daily life
• Tips for choosing appropriate beverages and food
• Simple ways of massaging acupuncture points
By establishing habits that conform to the rhythm of life, you will see notable and longlasting effects. So start listening to Mother Nature and your own body and get on track
towards achieving good health.
Zhang Jiaofei is a vice-chief physician of Henan Province Hospital of Traditional Chinese
Medicine.
Wang Jing is editor-in-chief of The Self-Help Classic with Illustrations for Family Doctors
and Moxibustion Therapy of Special Effects for Common Diseases.

Krav Maga
Real World Solutions to Real World Violence
Gershon Ben Keren
Krav Maga: Real World Solutions to Real World Violence presents a no-nonsense
approach to neutralizing attackers in close quarters. Author Gershon Ben Keren explains
the philosophy behind the Krav Maga method, which is the basis of the Israeli military's
devastating close combat system. No mere hodgepodge of Krav Maga techniques, this book
lays out a systematic approach to self-defense and provides illustrated confrontation
scenarios paired with tailored practical responses.
All of the photos in the book were shot in real-time, demonstrating what realistic movements—both from the attacker’s and defender’s perspective—look like. Where applicable,
techniques have been shot in the scenarios in which they occur such as bars, restrooms,
ATMs, etc. The situational components of such violent incidents are explained, so the reader
can learn to identify, predict, and avoid violence before it occurs.
Gershon Ben Keren has been training in Krav Maga since 1994 in both Israel and Europe.
He holds a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga in Israel, where he also received his teaching
certification. He has been trained by some of the IDF's (Israeli Defense Forces) most
experienced and respected Krav Maga instructors. In December 2011, he was inducted into
the "Museum of Israeli Martial Arts" at the Israeli
Martial Arts Center in Herzilya. He has taught
Krav Maga to civilians, security personnel, law
enforcement agencies, and to members of elite
military units and Special Forces. He also holds
a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Judo and has won
regional and national titles in Judo tournaments.
He has a Master’s Degree in Psychology, with
particular reference to violence and aggressive
behavior, and incorporates this knowledge into
the reality based self-defense training that he
provides. He lives and teaches Krav Maga in
Boston, running Krav Maga Yashir Boston.

Adventures of the Mad Monk
Ji Gong
The Drunken Wisdom of China's Most Famous
Chan Buddhist Monk
Guo Xiaoting
John Robert Shaw, translator
Victoria Cass, introduction
Follow the brilliant and hilarious adventures of a mad Zen Buddhist monk who rose from
humble beginnings to become one of China’s greatest folk heroes!
Ji Gong studied at the great Ling Yin monastery, an immense temple that still ranges up the
steep hills above Hangzhou, near Shanghai. The Chan (Zen) Buddhist masters of the temple
tried to instruct Ji Gong in the spartan practices of their sect, but the young monk,
following in the footsteps of other great ne’er-do-wells, distinguished himself mainly by
getting expelled. He left the monastery, became a wanderer with hardly a proper piece
of clothing to wear, and achieved great renown—in seedy wine shops and drinking
establishments!
This could have been where Ji Gong’s story ended. But his unorthodox style of Buddhism
soon made him a hero for popular storytellers of the Song dynasty era. Audiences delighted
in tales where the mad old monk ignored—or even mocked—authority, defied common
sense, never neglected the wine, yet still managed to save the day.
Ji Gong remains popular in China even today, where he regularly appears as the wise old
drunken fool in movies and TV shows. In Adventures of the Mad Monk Ji Gong, you’ll read
how he has a rogue’s knack for exposing the corrupt and criminal while still pursuing the
twin delights of enlightenment and intoxication. This literary classic of a traveling martial
arts master, fighting evil and righting wrongs, will entertain Western readers of all ages!

This fascinating book unravels the complexities of the Balinese calendar system and makes
it accessible to a general audience for the first time. Time, Rites and Festivals in Bali,
written by two recognized specialists of the culture, is a two part exploration of a
breathtaking calendar system—and includes 62 specially–commissioned drawings and a
selection of photographs of rites along with wooden and painted calendars from museums
around the world.
From a lively introduction to the distinctly Balinese concepts of time, to an explaination
of the two main calendars of Bali, to an in-depth discussion of the myth of Watugunung
which is the basis for the main calendrical system, Time, Rites and Festivals in Bali is a
dynamic introduction to the spiritual life and daily rituals that are at the core of this
island's rich culture.

Some people take photos, but artist Betty Reynolds
captures memories with her paintbrush and watercolors. Clueless in Tokyo provides an outsider’s take
on everyday life in Japan’s capital city—a place
where vending machines talk, toilets can be

During the seven years Reynolds lived in
Japan, she filled thirty sketchbooks with everything that caught her eye. Whether it’s
fashion, food, sport, transport, seasonal rituals, or Japanese pastimes, each vibrant sketch is
a delight, and Reynolds’ witty hand-lettered captions in both Japanese and English provide
an entertaining resource for beginning learners of Japanese.
A perfect introduction to Japan and Japanese culture, this edition contains many new illustrations as well as the Japanese script for key words and phrases. Travelers and students alike
will embrace Clueless in Tokyo as a charming and insightful souvenir to be treasured.
Betty Reynolds worked as a creative consultant and art director in Philadelphia before
accompanying her husband to Tokyo, where they lived for many years. She has published
several other books on Japanese culture, including Squeamish about Sushi, Japanese
Celebrations, and Tokyo Friends.

With over two hundred color photographs, this
breathtaking volume brings you from the trendy
beaches of Seminyak to the Monkey Forest at
Sangeh and the hot springs at Kintamani to
sunken wrecks off Tulamben. Through
Greenway’s lens, readers climb Lombok’s
smoldering Mt. Rinjani volcano and explore the
nearby rustic islands of Gili and Nusa. Greenway
was a longtime resident of Bali and still
considers it his spiritual home. His photographs
capture the region’s stunning natural landscapes
and the lives and experiences of the Baline
Balinese people—including their renowned religious
festivals, gamelan music, and painting and craft traditions. For example, an image of the
cliff-top temple of Pura Luhur Ulu Watu during a sunset dance performance—complete with
hypnotic chanting and fire-walking—reveals intriguing aspects of ancient Balinese culture.
Whether readers are planning a trip to Bali or just fantasizing about one, Journey Through
Bali & Lombok makes an unforgettable guide.
Paul Greenway has written more than thirty guidebooks for Lonely Planet, including
volumes on Bali, Lombok, and Indonesia. He is the author of Tuttle Travel Pack Bali &

trying to concoct a reason to return there.

Thailand's Best Street Food
The Complete Guide to Streetside Dining in
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Other Areas
Chawadee Nualkhair
For many visitors, traveling to Thailand means one thing: enjoying the delicious street food.
In Thailand’s Best Street Food, freelance writer and food blogger Chawadee Nualkhair
details everything that visitors need to know to track down the most delectable dishes—no
matter where they are hidden.
Most people think Bangkok is the only place to find great Thai street food, but Nualkhair
ate her way across the country and found incredible food stalls everywhere, from Phuket in
the south to Chiang Mai in the north. Even seasoned travelers may find it difficult to
identify the best venues—never mind figuring out how and what to order. Fortunately for
anyone bound for Thailand, Nualkhair draws on her vast experience to provide essential tips
on locating food stalls in cities across the country, including:
• Directions on how to find a particular stall
• Street maps for each sector
• Each stall’s specialty
• Serving options, beverages, and notable extras
• Whether or not seating is available
• Information on bathroom facilities
As an added bonus, Nualkhair includes recipes for the 12 most popular Thai street
food dishes adapted for the Western kitchen. Thai street food is one of today’s
hottest food trends, and Thailand’s Best Street Food makes it easy for foodies to
savor incredible Thai food—wherever their travels take them.
A former financial journalist, Chawadee Nualkhair now writes primarily about
food. She lives in Bangkok with her husband and two children. Visit her blog,

The Art of Japanese Architecture
David Young
Michiko Young
Tan Hong Yew, illustrator
Simplicity, sensitivity to the natural environment, and the use of natural materials are the
hallmarks of Japanese architecture. The Art of Japanese Architecture provides a broad overview of Japanese architecture in its historical and cultural context. It begins with a discussion of prehistoric dwellings and concludes with a description of modern Japanese buildings.
Important historical influences and trends—notably the introduction of Buddhist culture
from Korea and China, the development of feudalism, and the influence of modern Western
styles of building—are all discussed in detail. The book provides tremendous insights into
the dynamic nature of Japanese architecture and how it reflects an underlying diversity
within Japanese culture. A classic in the making, The Art of Japanese Architecture will be
sure to enlighten and delight readers.
The Youngs co-authored The Art of the Japanese Garden. They now live on Gabriola Island
off the west coast of Canada. Visit their website, www.JapaneseAesthetics.com
Tan Hong Yew obtained a degree in fine arts from the Kuala Lumpur College of Art in
Malaysia. He has contributed to many group exhibitions, and works as a freelance illustrator,
specializing in architectural illustrations.
"A tribute and rich entree to a beautiful architectural form; highly recommended.”
