Dear Members,
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As 2015 comes to close, we have lots to be thankful for at Hammock
Beach. December brings us numerous activities to celebrate the holidays as well as the end of a great year.
This holiday season, enjoy cookies and milk with Santa December 22-24 at Kid’s Crew, Christmas Eve in the Hammock
Beach lobby or Christmas dinner at Delfinos. Usher in 2016 with one of our many celebrations taking place at Hammock

Advisory Board of Governors Update,
b y Pre si d e n t, B ob Van N o s t rand
The year is coming to an end and all of us are starting to prepare for the holidays and 2016. ABOG is no different in
many ways, as we put the final touches on the 2015 year and start the transition to the new 2016 ABOG. For next year
we had three new individuals step up and volunteer for the three ABOG vacancies and three of the current ABOG board
members agreed to serve for a second term thus filling the 6 vacancies and eliminating the need for an election.
The three brand new members of ABOG 2016 are Carey Smith, Diana Kaiser and Bernie Barczak - replacing retiring members
Alan Mandell, John Kivi and John Bladel. We thank the new members for volunteering and the three retiring members for
their last two years of service. At the December 7th ABOG meeting we will elect the 2016 President and Vice President and
then start the process of filling the ABOG committees. I will introduce the entire 2016 ABOG and officers at the December 9
Member – Manager Reception.
At our November ABOG meeting we passed a resolution which will be codified into our Bylaws at the December meeting.
The resolution included that:
• ABOG Committees shall be no larger than 10 individuals
• ABOG Board members will not exceed three per committee
• Non ABOG committee members shall be limited to two consecutive years on the same ABOG committee
Changes were made to insure a proper balance on the committees between ABOG and non ABOG members and to keep
the committees at a size that promotes diverse views without contributing to 2+ hour meetings. The term limit for the non
ABOG committee members is intended to guarantee an infusion of new people and new ideas, similar to the limits currently
imposed on ABOG membership.
4
Those changes made finding new candidates for the 2016 ABOG committees a critical task. So in last month’s article
I encouraged people to volunteer for the ABOG committees and I spoke to that topic at the November MemberManager Reception. I am most happy to report that in response to that solicitation, twelve individuals have stepped
up and volunteered to serve on the various ABOG committees. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by the
response, but the level of response bodes well for the club moving forward. We are still accepting volunteers, and
we will be in contact with all volunteers during the month of December.
Next year, both Sports and Leisure and Food and Beverage committees will be meeting with new club managers, and
this coupled with what we hope is definitive activity on the Lodge, lobby and other club renovations and enhancements,
promises to make for an interesting year.
With year-end we also welcome our returning members from the North. Many of our year-end functions we will likely see
sign ups exceeding 300 - and due to facility constraints. waitlists will be a necessary evil. Please use the new member
website to make prompt reservations for the various events, and if your plans change, cancel ASAP using the same website
so we can accommodate any on the waitlists.
On behalf of the entire 2015 ABOG we thank you all for your support, patience and feedback you have given us and
we wish you all Happy Holidays and a safe and healthy 2016!

Swing Characteristic: Flat Shoulder Plane
By Wes Altice, Golf Professional/TPI Certified Golf Instructor and Coach
A flat shoulder plane is when the golfers shoulders turn on a more horizontal plane than what has been established at
address. When the shoulders move on a more horizontal plane the golfers orientation to the ball changes which will lead
to inconsistent contact and loss of distance.
The image of the player in the BLUE shirt below shows the golfer staying in his posture at the top of the backswing. It is important to
note, the player in the blue shirt has rotated his shoulders around the spine angle he established at set up. This will ensure the golfer
makes consistent contact which will lead to long and straight shots.

“When Poaching, Remember to Move
Forward and on a Diagonal”
by Katsiaryna Lukomskaya, Head Tennis Professional
Poaching is an important skill to possess to be an effective net player in doubles. To make
better volleys and finish points, it is important to remember to move on a diagonal when
poaching. Many times we recognize the opportunity too late and then drift across the court
only to hit a weak volley or make an error.
In the first photo, I have crossed by moving laterally. I am stretched and in a bad position to hit a penetrating shot. If you find
yourself in this situation often, it is recommended that you not force a poach and just let your partner deal with the incoming ball.
In the second photo, I have anticipated the poaching opportunity and am moving forward and across on a diagonal. This allows
me to use my momentum to hit a much more offensive volley. It is fine to start a half step further back in the box as long as you
can make more volleys moving towards the net.
Remember - recognize those poaching opportunities and move on a diagonal to make better volleys!

Whale Season
It is December, and, it is time to start looking! The endangered North Atlantic right whale migrates
from feeding grounds to the north (including Canada) to these waters to give birth to their calves. The
population is small in number, and typically, only about 20 calves are born each year.
There are few whales in a huge area of the ocean. The antidote? Many eyes! The whales are black in color, are mostly submerged with only
a part of their backs and heads visible, have a smooth back without a dorsal fin, and have a white pattern on the top of their head. They
are about 45 ft in length (the calf is about 16 ft in length). On some days, they are close to shore--sometimes just outside the surf line. When
sighted, please call our toll-free “hotline” at 1-888-97 WHALE (1-888-979-4253) .
