classes will meet in the Parish

includes DVD clips of inter-
views, parents sharing their experiences, and parenting experts.

St. James Chamber of Commerce’s
29th St. Patrick’s Day Parade in St.
James, on Saturday, March 16,
2013.

Fairfield Civic Association Happenings
The Fairfield Civic Association
was honored to have Smithtown
Planning Director Mr. Frank
DeRubeis as the guest speaker at
their December 2012 general
meeting. Mr. DeRubeis’ presentation gave the membership a
look into future projects in the
works for Smithtown. Rezoning,
traffic, sewer, economic development, were some of the projects
and problems that must be addressed. The presentation was
given to a packed hall with an
open and friendly discussion
with the membership.
Also at the meeting, Mr.
DeRubeis had the honor of installing Mr. Frank Vivona as the
new president of the Civic Association. Mr. Vivona is a retired
school teacher of 30 years and
finds time to serve on the Board
of Directors at Fairfield as well as
running the History Club.

On December 2, 2012 local students raised $500
Christmas caroling on Deepwells Lane. This has
been a tradition since 2004 and the residents of
Deepwells Lane have embraced the true meaning of
Christmas by graciously donating to our community
every year. Over the past years donations have been
made to various charities. This is the second year a
donation was made to the Smithtown Children’s
Foundation.
Led by Danielle, Jessica and Brooke Flugman the
children alerted the residents of Deepwells Lane of
their arrival on the 2nd. The children sang Christmas
carols and handed out candy canes to neighborhood
children and collected for a wonderful cause. They
stepped away with pride knowing what they had
done for others who are not so fortunate in our community.
“We would like to personally thank all the residents on Deepwells lane as well as all the parents
and families who took time out of their hectic schedules to join us this year. It was truly a beautiful
evening of laughter and song!”

Tender Years Group, sponsored by
Club Moriches at the Fairfield at
St. James condominium community, participates in the Tender
Years Program, a joint effort between the Smithtown Recreation
Department and the Smithtown
Senior Citizen’s Department. This
annual event gives children in
grades K through 5 the opportunity to shop for gifts for their family and friends. During the year,

and Stony Brook resident Byron
Lane recently attempted to run
125 miles on treadmills at Energy Fitness in St. James to raise
money for Friends of Karen, a tristate non-profit organization that
helps children and their families
cope with cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses.
They beat the 125 mile goal
and ran for 127.55 miles. Lane
completed 70.55 miles and Turturro completed 57 miles to
reach the 127.55 miles in their
12 hours of running. The gentlemen also raised more than
$1,200 for the charity.
While most people – even seasoned marathoners – could not
conceive of running for more

the pair met the challenge.
“Think of the way your life is
going right now,” Lane offers,
“Pretend that tomorrow, you
found out that your 5- or 10- or
15-year-old child was diagnosed
with some terrible life-threatening disease. Your life would
change drastically and forever.
Friends of Karen picks up the
slack so that families in this situ-
ation don’t have to worry about
the Rat Race – all of the little
things that can drain precious
time and energy – so they can
focus solely on their child and
their family. Running on treadmills symbolizes their race to try
to get everything done all at
once. During our fundraiser, we
focused on running around for
these families, just like Friends of
Karen does for their families.”
Lane, one of the most decorated ultrarunners in the country,
started his running career 37
years ago. Sponsored by The
Runners’ Edge (Farmingdale) and
Hammer Nutrition, he has won
47 ultramarathon races of 50 km
or longer, is a 3-time Age Group
National Champion, and, in
2008, was the National Champion in the 24-hour run.
Turturro started running longer
than marathon distances this past
year, having done a 31-miler and
a 50-miler, and regularly runs
five times per week. This was
Dan’s longest run ever. The two men met at Energy Interactive Fitness last year and
Byron has served as a very encouraging mentor to Dan. The
two brainstormed a fundraising
idea to bring some attention to a
deserving charity and were directed to Friends of Karen by Energy Fitness manager Michael
Fox.

help support this important organization,” said 55 year-old Turturro. “No one is prepared for a
life-threatening illness to strike
their child,” added Lane. “People
going through this type of family
crisis have enough to worry
about. Friends of Karen provides

Andy Wolke Remembers More
About the St. James He Knew As a Boy

have been writing about
people who made St. James
their home not so long ago.
This article contains more
of andy Wolke’s memories
of the local neighborhood
in the St. James that he
knew as a boy growing up
in the 1950’s.
Andrew and Marian Wolke
and their three children – Andy,
Lynn, and Gary – moved to the
little country village of St. James
in 1949. The Wolkes moved into
a new ‘Cape Cod’ style house on
a ½ acre lot at 6 Sherwood Drive
that Ernest Nurge sold them for
$8,000. Sherwood Drive was a
street that had been cut through
the woods that stretched from
Lake Avenue to Jefferson Avenue
to open up home sites south of
Woodlawn Avenue, and the
Wolkes owned one of the first
homes built in the sparsely populated area. Andy recalls that his
home was the only house standing on the south side of Sherwood Drive for its entire length
from Lake Avenue to Jefferson
Avenue. There was another
house, a summer bungalow, that
occupied the corner lot on the
west end of Sherwood Drive but
it faced Jefferson Avenue. On the
north side of Sherwood Drive,
just across the street from the
Wolke home was the Prezabowski’s home, and further to
the west, the Daly family had a
home. But in the early 1950’s,
these were the only houses
standing on the street that is
today crowded with residences.
In fact, south of Woodlawn Avenue, there weren’t many houses
and they were so spread out that
the Post Office refused to deliver
the mail to the houses and had
residents erect mailboxes on
Lake Avenue. The Wolkes had to
pick up their mail from a bank of
mailboxes that was erected at the

directly across from Sherwood
Drive, in the block between
Grove Avenue and Woodlawn
Avenue, the Stanislaws lived in a
big white house with a picket
fence. They owned horses, chickens and pigeons. Jack Stanislaw
was a lawyer, and a pigeon
fancier who raised homing pigeons. Andy recalled that he
raced his homing pigeons by
shipping them to distant sites,
where they were released, and
then flew home to St. James. Further north of the Stanislaw home
was where the Pleasant Inn used
to stand. It stood back from Lake
Avenue and had a large field in
front of it that was frequently
used for picnics and clambakes.
Andy remembered that the Pleasant Inn was a working man’s bar
that ultimately became Russell’s
and “a cheater’s hangout.” On
the southeast corner of Woodlawn Avenue and Lake Avenue
was the Knoll Realty Office that continued on page 26

was strategically located to help
prospective home owners find
their dream house in St. James.
Andy had a paper route, and he
did such a good job of delivering
the paper that Mr. Knoll used to
tell Mrs. Wolke that Andy was
the “best paperboy he ever had”
since he always put the paper
“right where he wanted it” on his
front porch.
South of Woodlawn Avenue
on the west side of Lake Avenue,
there were several other homes,
summer houses, in the block between Sherwood Drive and
Woodlawn Avenue. Two of these
large homes were owned by a
Swedish family named Lindquist.
Andy remembered that the
Lindquists had two girls who
would be with the family when
they came out in the summers
and sometimes they brought
their cousins along. Andy remembered that because he spent
one summer “in his teens” paling
around with Henry Lindquist, a
boy his own age. On the southwest corner of the intersection of
Woodlawn and Lake Avenues
was a house owned by the Johnsons, while across Woodlawn
Avenue on the northwest corner,
was Dr. Fishler’s office and
home. Dr. Fishler was one of
two doctors in town and Andy
remembers that he was a “funny
guy” with a good sense of humor
and he made housecalls. His
original home is still standing on
the corner and is Pat Mazzeo’s
(Pat’s Place Salon) barber shop
today.
On the northeast corner of the
intersection of Woodlawn and
Lake Avenues, where the Capital
One Bank stands today, was another private home owned by the
man who served as a caretaker
of Branglebrink Farm. Andy
knew this because his school bus
stop was right in front of the
house and he remembers seeing
the Branglebrink Farm truck
parked in the driveway. Behind
this house was a large open field
that today serves as the parking
lot for the bank. It was here that
the kids in the area would gather
to play football and baseball.
And if a baseball game was in
the offing, the Bowe family
would always show up in force.
Except for one house and lot on
the southeast corner of Seventh
Street, the Bowes owned the entire block bounded by Lake Avenue, Sixth Street, First Avenue,
and Seventh Street. The original
Bowe homestead was built on
the corner of Sixth Street and
Lake Avenue, and the three
Bowe sons, Richie, Neil, and
Artie were given house lots
within the block and built their
own homes there. Neil Bowe
built his house to the south of his

parent’s home and Richie Bowe
built his house next door. Both
houses fronted on Lake Avenue.
Artie was given a house lot that
fronted on First Avenue and built
his home there. Andy remembered that Richie Bowe worked
for Grumman and he had a big
white van that he used to drive
others to work at Grumman.
Richie’s son, John, built his own
home behind his father’s house
and it too faced 1st Avenue. It is
still there today as are the other
homes that Bowes built on the
block.
Across Lake Avenue, where
the stores and shops of the Patio
Pizza shopping center are located, Andy remembers that
there used to be a large 3-story
house on a big piece of property.
When Andy would ride the bus
to school, he would see New
York State Police vehicles coming and going from this house
that served as a State Troopers
barracks in St. James. The only
other house that stood in this
block is the large house that still
faces Lake Avenue at the north
end of the block. The only thing
Andy recalled about this house
on the corner was that it used to
be surrounded by a chain link
fence, and the owner of the
property had two large Boxers
that were allowed to run free in
the yard. Andy remembered that
the dogs would lunge at anyone
passing by on the sidewalk and
would throw themselves into the
fence frightening all who happened by.
Across Sixth Street, in the next
block on the west side of Lake
Avenue, were several summer
homes that occupied the block
between Sixth and Fifth Streets.
Many of these homes are still
standing and have been converted into commercial buildings. On the east side of Lake
Avenue where The Barn and Post
Office are to be found today,
there were no houses, only
woods. The only building in this
block was Harry Gregerson’s Barber Shop on the corner of 5th
Street and he lived in the house
behind his shop. North of Fifth Street, on the
east side of Lake Avenue, was an
empty lot that was adjacent to
the house the Knudsens owned.
Andy remembered that Kenny
Knudsen was an electrician and
Artie became the owner of the
Pleasant Inn. Beyond their home
that is today William Garthe’s
Reliance Real Estate Office and
the Our Town office, was the
Swenson’s house and garage that continued on page 94

vacation week performance of a
Mr. Mouse puppet show featuring
Katie’s Puppets at the Mills Pond
House, 660 Route 25A in St.
James. mr. mouse in outer Space is
scheduled for Saturday, March 9,
2013 with performances at 11
a.m. and 1 p.m. A book inspires
Mr. Mouse to build a rocket ship.

Mouse accidentally explores the

Performances are geared especially for young children pre-K to

Long Island puppeteer Katie
Polk believes her puppet art helps
people develop their own creativity. She builds all her own puppets, using items she finds on
beaches, in thrift stores and any-
where else that may be home to
clothespins, buttons, empty
thread spools, odd material and
the like. Just about any item
around may give life to one of
Katie’s puppets. Combining
sounds, textures, colors and
rhythms, Katie uses her inventive
imagination to bring her puppet
characters to life. She likes to incorporate “fun, silliness, imagination and a sense of wonder” into
her puppets so anyone, at any age
will enjoy them!

Choosing the Right Pillow
With so many choices, choosing the right cervical pillow can
be challenging. However, it is
one of the best investments you
can make for the health of your
spine.
There are three normal
curves in the spine that need to
be maintained. If not, abnormal
stresses are applied to the spine
and over time can lead to neck,
shoulder, upper back, mid back
and possibly lower back pain. A
good cervical pillow will help
maintain your neck curve and
lessen the stress to your cervical spine.
The spaces created between
your body and the mattress
varies depending on the position
you sleep in. Cervical pillows
are designed specifically to support your neck in a neutral position when sleeping on your back
or on your side. Sleeping on
your stomach is by far the worst
position, and not recommended,
as you have to turn your head to
the side thus creating a torsional
stress to the cervical spine.
Cervical pillows come in different sizes. It is important for
you to choose the correct size
pillow, which will vary depending
on whether you are a back or
side sleeper. An improperly
sized pillow will not maintain
proper alignment and potentially
cause discomfort. When sleeping on your back you should use
a pillow that cradles your head
and fills the small void created
from the back of your neck to
the mattress. When sleeping on
your side, your shoulder width
plays a roll in deciding the size
of the pillow. Obviously this distance will be different amongst
us and you should be measured
for it, but ultimately you want to
maintain a neutral posture without your head bending down or

being kinked up. For those who
find themselves sleeping on
both their side and back
throughout the night, there are
pillows designed to accommodate both positions within a
single pillow.
On a side note, the added
benefit to maintaining good
cervical posture with sleeping is
that it reduces snoring as your
breathing passage is better
aligned and not obstructed.

average person sleeps
approximately 1/3rd of their life,
choosing the right cervical pillow
to maintain good posture is a

two most
popular New
Year’s resolutions are to lose
weight and get organized. So it’s
no surprise that January is National Clutter Control month.
Funny isn’t it? It’s almost as if
clutter were an uncontrolled epidemic, one which needs a clean
slate and a “new-year” to attempt to contain. But if we do
things the same way as last year,
we’ll probably get the same results. So how can we change?
Most of us need help – and help
is all around us if we reach out
and are willing to hold ourselves
accountable.
Exactly what does accountability mean – in business and in
life? This past year, I renewed a
friendship with a young man,
Hal, who was dead on arrival at
the hospital after a horrific car
crash. By a miracle, he was revived and after two years of excruciating surgeries and
rehabilitation, he defied the odds
and returned to a normal life. As
I was enjoying his company at a
business summit, I asked him
how he did it. He wrote a book
about his experiences, started a
successful life coaching business,

bedroom, kitchen, bathroom)

tending your garden can be an
excellent form of physical exercise. While gardening you are always moving, bending,
stretching, squatting, twisting
and lifting. Spending 45 minutes
of gardening can burn the same
amount of calories as 30 minutes
of jogging or other aerobic exercise. The other benefit is you will

and/or vegetables. It’s a win-win!
Working outside in the quiet,
fresh air and sunshine can be a
real stress reliever. Your mind is
quietly focused on the task at
hand; digging, weeding, planting
can all be very therapeutic for
your busy mind.
If you are growing a garden for
the first time, make sure to pick a
spot that gets plenty of sun, at
least 6 hours. Make your garden
plot a size you can maintain,
bigger is not always better. If it is
too big you may get too discouraged by all the work you have to
do. If you do not have, or want
to use any of your yard space for
a garden, you can always plant
in containers. They can be
placed in the perfect spot and
are easy to reach when planting
or harvesting. Choose a container large enough to sustain the
plants you grow.
As in other years, there are
plenty of new garden plants that
will be available this year. Here
are just a few:
lanai Candy Cane verbena is a
lovely tender perennial with
white and red striped flowers
blooming from spring to fall.
Glamouflage Grape petunia
grows with nice purple flowers
from spring to fall. The unique
part of this petunia is the brightly
variegated foliage.

which helps to show off the
bright orange flowers. A choice
for a shady spot in your garden.

New Stamp Issues
The proclamation declared all
slaves in the rebel states to be
free. The stamp, evocative of
broad-sides from the Civil War
era, includes the phrase “Henceforth Shall Be Free,” taken from
the Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation stamp, available at the St. James Post Office,
is one in a Civil Rights Set being
issued in 2013.

On January 1, 2013, in Washington, DC, the Postal Service issued an Emancipation
Proclamation commemorative
First-Class Mail stamp (Forever
stamp priced at 45 cents) in one
design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive pane of 20 stamps. With this stamp, the u.S.
Postal Service commemorates
the 150th anniversary of the
Emancipation Proclamation,
which President Abraham Lincoln signed on January 1, 1863.
lunAr new yeAr SerieS yeAr oF THe SnAKe
The Year of the Snake takes
place between February 10,
2013, and January 30, 2014.
First introduced in 2008, the series will continue through 2019
with stamps for the Years of the
Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster,
Dog and Boar.
The snake is one of 12 animals
associated with the Chinese
lunar calendar. According to an
old legend, the animals raced
across a river to determine their
order in the cycle. The rat
crossed by riding on the back of
the ox, jumping ahead at the last
minute to win the race. The tiger,
rabbit, and dragon came in after
the ox, followed by the snake in
sixth place.
People born in the year of a
particular animal are said to
share characteristics with that
animal. Individuals born during
the Year of the Snake are said to
be deeply philosophical, mysterious, and comfortable being
alone.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated primarily by people of
Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tibetan and Mongolian heritage in
many parts of the world. Images

help prevent future property disputes in the event of divorce or
death, many people enter into a
pre-marital (pre-nuptial) or postmarital (post-nuptial) arrangement, in addition to the marriage
contract itself. A young married
couple with no children, no assets and no business interests
probably does not need this type of agreement. However, a middle aged person with children
from a prior marriage, a house or
other assets may wish to consider this type of agreement.

each partner after the partners
have made full and fair disclosure of their assets. Your attorney

treatment, abandonment, imprisonment, adultery, or having lived

allows “irretrievable breakdown
for a period of more than six
months” as a ground of “nofault” divorce. In some cases,
both parties wish to obtain a divorce and agree on all the issues
involved, such as, division of the
property, spousal support, child
custody, support and visitation.

obtained without either side having to ever appear in court and is
called an uncontested divorce.

help you decide if this type of divorce is right for you. going Through a Divorce
There are quite a few steps involved in obtaining a divorce
where one or more of the issues
involved is not agreed upon. This
is known as a contested divorce.
In this type of divorce, it is essential that you have a lawyer who
is experienced in matrimonial
law from the very beginning.
Your lawyer can protect your
rights and those of your children.
The action for divorce begins
with establishing the grounds for
divorce and serving a summons
and complaint. The papers must
be filed with the clerk of the
Supreme Court. Often, a motion
needs to be filed for temporary
child support, maintenance, orders of protection or exclusive
occupancy of the marital home.
These motions are referred to as
“pendente lite” relief and govern
the period between the time the
action is started and a judgment
of divorce is granted or the case
otherwise settles. There are generally negotiations to attempt to
settle all of the issues before a
trial. Actually, very few divorce
cases go all the way to trial.
However, if all of the differences
cannot be resolved and a settlement cannot be reached, a trial
will be necessary. After the trial,
a judge will issue a decree determining a division of property,
custody, visitation and support of
children, and payment of any
“maintenance”.
New York has enacted a law
called “Equitable Distribution”.
This essentially means that the
property is fairly and equitably
divided between the parties. This
is different than a “Community
Property” state where the property is split in half between the
husband and wife. Your attorney

Is It Time for a Legal Checkup?

The beginning of the year is a
good time to pull out the last will
and testament, power of attorney, health care proxy and living
will to make sure that they still
reflect your wishes. Likewise if
you have a trust or any other
planning documents. If you have designated anyone
as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy, annuity, bank account or investment, you also
should review those documents
for potential changes. If you own
any real estate, you should consider whether the deed accurately states who else owns it
and what happens in case of
death. Whether a beneficiary has
died or is no longer in your good
graces, making no change will or
could result in your assets being
distributed in a fashion that you
no longer intended. Of course,
having this happen will not affect
you, since you will not be
around when it occurs. Perhaps
more important to you should be
the concepts of who will make
decisions regarding your finances and care if you are not
able to do so yourself, and how
that person or persons will act
on your behalf. Finances and assets in general
can be managed by a trustee
under a trust you create or by an
agent under a power of attorney

ble or irrevocable. They are more
complex, but are valuable for
many reasons. A power of attorney permits
you to designate someone to act
on your behalf for all matters, or
only some that you choose. usually a power of attorney is
durable, that is, it is still valid if
you become mentally incapacitated. In 2009, changes in New
York law resulted in even the
basic statutory form becoming
more complex, especially regarding the agent’s authority to
make gifts. Additions and modifications to the basic form are permitted, but only in a certain
fashion. Your attorney should explain the operation of the power
of attorney and emphasize the
agent’s fiduciary obligation to act
in the principal’s best interest. You may name someone to
make health care decisions for
you under a health care proxy.
However, this person has authority only if a doctor determines
that you cannot make those decisions yourself. In a living will, you state your
instructions to withhold or withdraw medical treatment that prolongs the process of dying. These

Control That Which Is Controllable

The investment
headwinds
that you
now face
may be
among
the most
substantial at any time during
your lifetime. unfortunately most
of those headwinds are not
within your control.
We now live in an age of zero
interest rate policy. And since
neither you nor I preside over the
Federal Reserve Board, there’s
not much we can do to change
that.
We have no control over tax
policy either. And the fiscal cliff
negotiations concluded with the
steepest tax increases being directed at investment income.
Inflation which is a consequence of fiscal and monetary
policy is yet another headwind
that we cannot control. Since
just the start of the new century,
the purchasing power of
$100,000 has been eroded to
about $75,000. My hunch is that
over the next 12 years, inflation
will be even more aggressive
than the previous 12.
When you start aggregating
the effects of low interest rates,
high taxation and persistent inflation, it takes quite a toll on the
wealth accumulation process.
But that’s not all… there’s still investment advisory costs. Fortunately, this is one headwind that
you can partially control. And
there are two primary ways of
going about doing so: 1. Avoid Conflicted Interests
If you are engaged in a relationship where the advisor can
earn a commission, then a potential conflict of interest exists.
I’m not talking about a stockbroker who over-trades an account.
That’s too obvious and pretty rare
these days. I’m far more concerned about the sale of products such as variable annuities.
Often times the commissions associated with these products are
just gargantuan and can incent
an advisor to do the wrong thing.
The alternative is to find an advisor that operates under a “feeonly” arrangement. Meaning
they cannot and will not accept
compensation from anyone other
than the client. This distinction
however is not just one of sound
logic – it is also accompanied by
a legal distinction. Those advisors operating under a commission oriented structure must only
meet a “suitability standard”. In
other words the investment is not
required to be in your best inter-

under a “fee-only” arrangement
must meet the higher standard of
being a fiduciary. The simplest
way to define a fiduciary is that
they are obligated to place client
interests ahead of their own.
For the sake of clarity, there is
a critical nuance between advisors that introduce themselves as
“fee-based” as opposed to “feeonly”. A fee-based advisor is a
hybrid that is compensated in a
fee-like manner for some services and a commission-like manner for others. Therefore the
fee-based model remains one of
conflicted interests. 2. Pursue Lower Fees
Fee-only advice may resolve
the conflicted interests issue but
it usually comes with a punitive
pricing mechanism. The investment industry has engineered a
way to be compensated in a geometric fashion by brilliantly linking compensation to the amount
of assets under management.
Thus a $1 million client will pay
roughly 2X what a $500,000
client will pay. And a $5 million
client – roughly 10X more. Yet
the simple truth is they all require about the same amount of
time to manage and administer.
It’s really not justifiable – other

to such a system is a flat management fee arrangement. And
investors with north of about
$500,000 in assets would be best
suited to explore such innovative
alternatives. Keep in my mind lower fees
are not likely to happen at one of
the big branded firms. Typically
an advisor in that environment
may keep 35% to 45% of the
revenue generated. Many firms
use the balance of earnings to
distribute mega bonuses to multiple layers of management and
generate profits for countless
shareholders. And I have yet to
see a shred of evidence to suggest that there is a correlation
between high fees and quality of
advice or caliber of people. On the contrary, independ-

pass along a more efficient cost
structure. It will be impossible to avert
all the headwinds that will be
thrown your way but it would be
wise to control that which is

frustrated with their investments

Physical Therapist’s Guide to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

what is
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The carpal tunnel is a narrow
channel on the palm side of your
wrist. The tunnel protects the median nerve and the tendons that
bend your fingers. Pressure on
the nerve can cause pain and
weakness in your wrist and hand
and numbness or tingling in
some of your fingers. This pressure is caused by crowding or irritation of the median nerve in
the carpal tunnel and can lead to
CTS. Extreme wrist positions, as
well as a lot of finger use, especially with a lot of force or vibration (such as holding the steering
wheel when driving heavy machinery), can all contribute to
CTS.
CTS is common in professions
such as assembly-line work, particularly meat packing; and jobs
requiring the use of hand tools,
especially tools that vibrate. Although excessive keyboard and
computer use is often associated
with CTS, those performing assembly line work are three times
more likely to develop CTS than
those who perform data entry
work. Some leisure activities can
also create CTS, such as sewing,
sports such as racquetball and
handball, and playing string instruments such as the violin.
Signs and Symptoms
CTS usually starts gradually,
with symptoms such as burning,
tingling, “pins and needles,” or
numbness in the palm of the
hand and fingers. Often the
symptoms are more noticeable
during the night, and individuals
often report being wakened with
symptoms. Many people feel the
need to “shake out” their hands
to try to relieve the symptoms.
As the condition progresses,
the symptoms are noticed during
the daytime and are often worse
when holding items such as a
heavy book or a hairbrush.
Weakness of the hand and more
constant numbness may occur if
the pressure on the nerve continues. You may find that you drop
objects unexpectedly or have a
weakness in your grip.
how Can a
Physical Therapy help?
Conservative Care
If your evaluation confirms
early-stage CTS, conservative
care will be recommended as a
first step. Physical therapy treatment can be effective in reducing your symptoms and getting
you back to performing normal
activities
Depending upon the causes of
your CTS, your therapy program
may include:
• Education regarding:
–changing wrist positions (ie,
avoiding prolonged bent
wrist positions)
–proper neck and upper back
posture (ie, avoiding forward
head or slouching)
–safe use of sharp utensils,
tools, or other implements, if
sensory changes are identified

Sacroiliac Joint Pain

what are some of the facts
about sacroiliac joint pain?
The sacroiliac or “S1” joints are
the link between your spinal column and pelvis. They help absorb
damaging shock forces, and they
also help stabilize the body and
transmit weight to the lower
limbs. S1 joints normally have
some amount of movement, and
they can move in several planes of
motion.
Two separate and distinct categories of S1 Subluxation exist. Primary occurs suddenly due to
trauma, lifting, slipping or sudden
unexpected movements. Secondary is caused by faulty posture aggravated by occupation or habits.
If a traumatic injury is ruled out
in your case, and the pain seems
to lessen when you’re lying down
and not moving, a postural imbal-
ance might be contributing to
your condition. There may be an
imbalance in your feet or your
legs may be unequal in length just
enough to be causing stress or
strain to your S1 joints.
How can a chiropractor help me?
usually, your chiropractor will
ask you several questions about
the location and intensity of your
pain, whether the pain seems to
spread to other parts of the body
(thigh, buttock, groin, leg, foot,
etc.), if it causes you to limp, if it
hurts to turn over in bed or get up
from a chair, etc. Postural evaluation, joint examination and diagnostic testing are
common techniques your chiropractor may use to help determine
whether you are experiencing a
true dysfunction of the S1 joint.

Happy New Year and Welcome to Cold and Flu Season
by Pamela browne Keane, r.Ph.
The holiday season has come
and gone and now we get to welcome the flu which has shown up
early and looks to stick around a
long time. This year’s flu is relatively mild but seems to linger for
two to three weeks. Hopefully you
have had your flu shot but there
are other things you can do to
both protect and help yourself if
you do get sick.
Hand washing with regular
soap is very effective. The physical
action of washing your hands
cleans your skin of any harmful
bacteria or viruses that you may
have picked up from a contaminated surface. Anti-bacterial soap
is no better than regular soap because the flu, and the common
cold, are both caused by a virus.
Yes, but what about bacterial infections? While anti-bacterial
soaps do kill some bacteria they
do not kill all bacteria. The bacteria that are left behind are stronger
then the ones that are killed and
you can create a super strong
colony on your skin. Anti-bacterial soap is no more effective then
regular soap at cleansing your
skin. Get adequate rest and keep
yourself well hydrated. If you get
the flu, get plenty of rest and drink
plenty of fluids such as water,
juice or soup. A fever is an indica-
tion that you should visit your
doctor. Your physician may prescribe
antibiotics but these are not used
to treat the flu. The flu is caused
by a virus. Your doctor will give
you an antibiotic if they feel your
case of the flu has weakened you
and you are at risk for a secondary
bacterial infection. Antibiotics are
generally tolerated well but sometimes they can cause diarrhea.
Over 10% of people who take antibiotics suffer this problem,
which almost always leads to therapy stoppage and often treatment
failure. A probiotic, such as Saccharomyces boulardii, can be
very effective in treating this problem. This type of probiotic can be
taken directly with the antibiotic
with no interactions or problems.

James Michael Donovan
James Michael Donovan, long-time resident of
Stony Brook, L.I., passed away on December 17, 2012
at the age of 70. Cherished husband of Lynn. Loving
father of Scott (Kathleen) and Matt (Beth). Beloved
Grampy of Gavin, Shane and Will. Devoted brother
of Lynn Schulz and William Donovan. Mr. Donovan reposed at the St. James Funeral
Home’s South Chapel. Funeral Services were held on
December 21, 2012 at St. James Episcopal Church, St.
James. Interment followed at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers donations to: Alzheimer’s Disease
Resource Center, 45 Park Avenue, Bay Shore, NY

Mr. Donovan’s funeral arrangements were professionally supervised by Kenneth, Kerry and Ken Jr. – the

Clementine Maciarz
passed away on December
14, 2012, one month away
from the age of 95 after
being hospitalized in midNovember 2012. Clementine was born at home,
during a blizzard on January
9, 1918 in Punxatawny, Pa.
She contracted diphtheria at
the age of 3 and almost succumbed to the disease.
When the Great Depression
hit, her family had to leave
everything behind except

suitcase to move to Glendale, Queens where her father, Joseph Mrozinski, found work as a glass blower.
Clementine finished high school and entered Hunter
College to earn a B.S. degree. She met her future husband, Alfred, at a dance at
St. Pancreas Church and waited for four years for him
to return from serving in World War II. They got married and moved to Franklin Square where they were
dedicated to serving at St. Catherine of Sienna parish.
Clem and Fred raised four children and were married
for 51 years.
During those years Clementine went back to school
to earn a M.S. Degree in Library Science and worked
for 15 years at the Elmont Public Library. She instituted
the first programs for young mothers who came to the
library with their small children and introduced them
to books and other services the library had to offer.
She was nicknamed Mrs. Marvelous.
She moved to St. James in 2004 to live with her
daughter Janet, son-in-law John Garvey, and granddaughters Ashleigh and Alanna Garvey. Clem loved
her new home and town – the quaintness and charm,
the history and historic buildings, Sts. Philip and James
Church, and the friends of the Garvey’s gave her much
joy. Mrs. Maciarz was predeceased by her devoted and
beloved husband in 1996 and her first-born daughter,
Mary Ellen Barocas in 2012. In addition to Janet and
John Garvey and their children Mrs. Maciarz is survived by a son-in-law, Leon Barocas, grandchildren
Victor (Mayumi) Barocas and Rebecca (Sean) Smith,

Beyond their home, Andy recalled that there was another

further along, where Chorus Line
Dance Studio is today, a store
was located, and beyond it a
Gulf gas station was built in the
late ‘50s. Fourth Street marked the beginning of the St. James commercial district which stretched
along Lake Avenue from 4th
Street to the St. James Fire House
on North Country Road. The
shops and stores that made up
the commercial heart of St.
James in the 1950’s will have to
wait until next month, when
once again, Andy Wolke will tell
us more about the St. James he

the Town of Smithtown’s Senior Citizens Department, transportation is
provided for library visits on regularly scheduled dates or on demand
when possible.
On days of planned visits, a van
from the Smithtown Senior Citizens
Center will take you to any Smithtown Library Building. if you need to
go to the library when a visit is not
planned, call the Senior Citizen
Center’s Transportation Department
to inquire about scheduling an individual visit. To arrange to be picked
up for a planned visit or to request
an individual visit, call the Senior
