Director’s Message
Hello Mequon-Thiensville Community Members:
I am very grateful for this opportunity to serve as the new Recreation Director for
the Mequon-Thiensville Recreation Department and School District. I look forward
to the successes and challenges of the job ahead for years to come. I have served
as the Recreation Manager for the past 10 years in this department and I strongly
believe we have one of the best Recreation Departments in the state. The number
of offerings we have continue to grow each year and we strive to acquire the most
qualified instructors to deliver our exciting programs. It’s my responsibility to enhance
the quality of life for all members of this community whether that’s preschool, youth,
adult, or seniors. I love what I do and my commitment to planning, coordinating,
promoting, and evaluating all types of recreation programs make this job exciting.
I feel that treating people with respect and dignity allows myself to be an effective
leader. A great leader has desire, dedication and determination to achieve the goals
and objectives set forth by the department. I live all aspects of my life through the 3
D’s. As director, my door will always be open for positive or constructive feedback
and suggestions. Thank you and I look forward to providing quality programs to you
each and every season.

ADULT/SENIOR PROGRAMS -
Fitness
Muscle Conditioning Fitness
This is a one hour class designed to increase your heart rate into at least the fat burning zone and tone and sculpt your body
using handheld weights; a fusion of cardiovascular training and weight training. After a warm-up you will learn combinations
of movements designed to push your body and cardiovascular system into the next level. Options are given to encourage
each participant to work at their own level. After forty five minutes of using handheld weights, gravity, and your body weight
we will focus on muscle endurance training to improve your strength and ability to perform everyday tasks. Options given
in this class will assist every participant whether you want to increase your fitness so that you’re not winded when you walk
up a flight of stairs, or increase your fitness to become more physically athletic. Please be sure to bring a mat and handheld
weights.

Principles and Foundations of Group Exercise Certified and CPR Pro
Tai Chi Continuing
Tai Chi Chuan and Ch’I Kung are ancient Chinese mind-body practices. What is Ch’i? The Chinese word Ch’I means
air, energy or life. Everyone possess Ch’i and we can develop it within our bodies through learning and practicing T’ai
Chi movements. In class, students learn a comprehensive system that opens and strengthens the whole body in a
gentle manner. Ultimately, the practice integrates body, mind and spirit causing a ‘ripple’ effect that not only helps the
overall health of the individual, but spreads out into the well-being of the family and the greater community. Continuing
students must have one session or be an experienced practitioner of the art.

AEROBIC DANCE & FITNESS CLASS
Jump back into a fun traditional aerobic dance class just like it used to be when it all started in the
1980’s. It was fun back then and it still is! Dance to your old favorite tunes as well as new ones
while getting your heart in shape as well as your total body. The 60 minute workout includes lots of
stretching, and strengthening exercises for your complete body work out, then we dance with simple
and fun steps to a lot of different kind of music and monitor our heart rates to make sure you are
getting the best possible cardio work out. This class is for beginners as well as students who want a
more advanced routine, you can work at your own pace during class. Bring a mat, water bottle, wear
good shoes for working out, but most of all, come ready to have fun and make some new friends while
working on staying healthy!
About the instructor; Cheryl Figg has a degree in Recreation from Indiana University with a minor in
dance. She has taught aerobic dance since 1980 and offers a very unique blend of exercise and dance

PICKLEBALL
Yes, PICKLEBALL – the fun game with the funny name, is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation! Created in the
backyard of Washington Congressman Joel Pritchard in 1965, it is a combination of badminton, tennis and table tennis, and
is enjoyed by all age groups. Using a badminton-sized court, tennis-height net, table tennis-type paddle, and a baseballsized whiffle ball, usually played by doubles, this game has few rules and is far less strenuous than tennis. It is easy to learn
and provides plenty of exercise and eye-hand coordination; a game of strategy for both men and women, you don’t have to
be tall and powerful. Want to watch a video? Go to www.USAPA.org, click on link “What is Pickleball?” under Training and
Court Info link or sit in on any Thursday or Saturday open court session to see if you’d like it.

FALL HARVEST OF FLAVORS
W
So many varieties of produce available in the fall; apples, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, green beans, kale, tomatoes,
cabbage, beets, broccoli and the list goes on and on. When you buy produce fresh and in-season it is generally less
expensive and more nutritious. When food is not in season locally, it’s either grown in a hothouse or shipped in from other
parts of the world, and both affect the taste. Compare a dark red, vine-ripened tomato still warm from the summer sun with
a winter hothouse tomato that’s barely red, somewhat mealy, and lacking in flavor. You know what I’m talking about! So
tonight I am going to create a variety of recipes using fresh local produce to bring you a menu that will explode with flavor
and color.
You’ll sample…
• Braised Pork with Apples, Mushrooms, and Calvados
• Rosemary Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Caramelized Shallots

BRIDGE LESSONS
- BEGINNERS
Our bridge lessons start in the fall and are an ongoing series of 6-week sessions that continues through May. The
beginning lessons at 1:00pm are geared to those who enjoy cards but don’t have bridge experience, have played
a minimal amount of bridge, or who have not played in years. Because bridge is a game that needs a strong
foundation of basic knowledge, our classes are only offered to new students in the fall of each year, so now is
the time to jump in with both feet. Don’t worry about missing a few classes as we review concepts regularly. Our
classes do fill up quickly. We have a limit of 18 students per class and only accept additional students mid-year if
space is available AND knowledge of prior concepts is shown. If you have any questions on class content or where
you would best fit, please give our instructor, Billie Dillon, a call prior to the start of the sessions at 262-893-8877. A
non-scheduled off week is built into each session. Come join us to make new friendships and keep your brain busy.

Chronic pain diagnoses are plaguing our population. There are many treatment options available
for pain management from things as invasive as surgery and pain pump implantation to things as
simple as manual treatment. Craniosacral therapy is effective, yet noninvasive techniques that use
gentle touch to help release physical imbalances and restrictions that can become stored in the body’s
membranes and connective tissue, which can free the central nervous system to perform optimally.

Ultimate is a fast paced non-contact team sport combining the passing and cutting of football, the non-stop
action of soccer, and the footwork, defense and frequent scoring of basketball. Teams pass the disc from player
to player until a pass is caught in an end zone for a point. Games are typically played to 13.20+ scores per game
between the two teams is fairly typical.
Players will learn how to throw and catch a disc, the rules, game strategies and most importantly the Spirit of
the Game. SOTG is the guiding principle of Ultimate even at the highest levels and puts the onus for fair play
and mutual respect on the players. Unlike other sports there are no game officials, so players must rely on their
knowledge of the rules and personal integrity to make their own calls (i.e. fouls, traveling and other violations).
A USA Ultimate Certified instructor will guide beginners and advanced players to better learn the game of
ultimate. Athletic shorts, a black shirt and a white shirt are required. Soccer or football style cleats are highly
recommended although cross training shoes will work. Metal cleats/spikes are NOT allowed (i.e. baseball
shoes and some screw-in cleats).

Well mannered children have a lifelong advantage in job situations and in relationships. We start with introductions,
shaking hands, eye contact and confidence. We continue with conversation skills, family etiquette, what the “R”
stands for in R.s.v.p., and writing memorable thank you notes. In the last class, we will eat a brownie (no nuts)
while holding the silverware European style. The reasons for the rules are always made clear, and there are

Knights of the Rad Table:
A Drama for Kids
Travel back to the medieval times for the fall play this season! Gwen’s spending her Saturday reading a
book and Artie’s riding around on a skateboard. Just typical American teenagers... until Merlin wakes up
from a 1500 year snooze to whisk them away to the days of chivalry! In this fanciful farce about the legend of
King Arthur, Artie is majestically crowned king and Gwen meets the “to-die-for” Lancelot and the “Knights of
the Rectangular Table.” When Artie is kidnapped by the wicked Morgan La Fey and her Ladies-in- Waiting,
the newly-crowned king’s bumbling (but loyal!) knights embark on a quest to save him. On their mission,
they encounter a tea-drinking dragon, a dangerous bevy of fair maidens and the Black Knight. There are
many wonderful parts for beginners and for those with experience on stage. You will make new friends, gain
confidence on stage, and enjoy theater games and activities at each rehearsal. All participants will receive
a T-shirt.
Attention Parents/Guardians! All students who enroll in the program are expected to be at ALL
rehearsals, so please do not enroll your child unless they are committed to giving 100% to the program. Cast

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s
Sound of Music Jr.
Spring Musical - Wednesday Cast
This final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical.
When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the
seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of
spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they
discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy.
The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most
thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular
movie musical of all time. In this adaptation for pre-high school students, the content has been edited to better suit
younger attention spans, but all the elements that make this show a classic are still in place. All participants will
receive a free T-shirt and two free tickets to the show.
