How do you prepare for the coming of Christ?
I can’t wait to find our next nativity. JoBeth and I
started a tradition that has continued with our kids–
purchasing nativity sets from around the world. Now
that they are old enough, Sophia and Luke carefully
help us place
the crèche’s
around the
living room
the first week
of Advent. Just like the kids, I love playing with the
little animals, shepherds, and wise men. We have one
nativity from the Taos Publeo in New Mexico, another one with tall ebony figures made in Africa, but my
favorite was made in Peru. It comes with a rustic barn,
animals, wise men, and beautifully painted members
of the Holy Family. I always light candles at night
with this set; it makes me think of the light of angels
coming at Christmas to
proclaim to the shepherds
“Do not be afraid; for
see–I am bringing you
good news of great joy…”

hat are you waiting for this Holy Season?
As a kid, I lived for Christmas. I made
my Christmas list early for Saint Nicholas and patiently constructed handmade gifts for my
family out of cardboard and glue. But what really got
me excited was our annual family hunt for the perfect
Christmas tree. My sisters and I, in a pleading voice,
would hound our father every day asking “Can we get
the Christmas tree today?” Year after year, we drove
to multiple Christmas tree lots looking for the same
type of tree–a large, white flocked, evergreen. After the
purchase, the tree always was set-up just outside my
bedroom door, and for weeks I would go to sleep with
the smell of Christmas and the blinking of multi-colored lights on my walls.

Christmas Caroling with
St. Francis Episcopal Church
When: Sunday Dec 14 @ 3 p.m
Where: Meet in the St. Francis parking lot
Carolers will visit homes and other locations singing
everyone’s favorite carols. Afterwards, St. Francis invites
everyone to stay and have dinner in the parish hall. Trinity will supply its bus for caroler transportation, however
extra transportation may be needed. Please wear your most
festive Christmasy attire – comfortable and as over the top
as you can get!
Greening of the Church
Sunday, December 21
A long-time Anglican tradition is the “Greening
of the Church.” Because the Episcopal Church honors
the season of Advent, we wait to decorate the church for
Christmas until the week between the fourth Sunday of
Advent and Christmas Day. This year the greening will be
December 21, after the 10:30 service. Everyone is invited to stay and help decorate for Christmas Eve. The Altar Guild supplies all the decorations and some guidance.
You don’t have to be an interior decorator to help; it’s such
a large task that every pair of hands is welcome. A potluck
soup and cornbread lunch will be served. Please join us!
Wednesday Women’s Bible Study
Trinity’s Women’s Bible Study meets each
Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Parlor. This session ends
December 10. The class will take a short break during the
holidays. A new session begins Wednesday, January 15 at
10 a.m. with a new study “Disciples and Other Sinners.”
A unique kind of Bible study, it features “first person”
stories by the people of the Gospels–Joseph, Herod, Mary,
Peter, Caiaphas, John, Levi, Judas and others. The stories
are Biblically accurate with detailed Biblical information.
Students who have taken the course say it was the first time
they really understood that the people of the New Testament were real people with real problems, relationships,
joys and challenges. Contact Ada Sutherland if you are
interested in joining the class. A $12 student book, which
can be obtained through Ada, is required.
Your 2015 Pledge
I
f church pledge drives were horse races, we’d be just
a few quick strides from halfway home. But we’re certainly
not in a horse race. What we’re doing is attempting to gather
Trinity’s full list of pledges for the coming church year early
enough to meet our 2015 budget needs and to be able to adjust
numbers accordingly prior to the end of 2014.
There are several planned major maintenance items that need
to be addressed in the coming year in order to be in compliance
with Federal Regulations. There are also several items that will
greatly improve Trinity’s ability to better serve the Trinity Parish
family.
Victoria’s fine Christian outreach community depends on an
increase in the numbers of pledges and our ability to make outreach a truly viable line item in our 2015 budget. Our Trinity
Sandwich Ministry needs support from the budget in order to
continue to serve more than 200 sandwiches in sack lunches
to the folks at Victoria Crossroads
Apartments – folks who are truly at
“the crossroads!”

discuss your pledge commitment
to Trinity Episcopal Church. Then
take a few minutes to fill out your pledge card and return it to
Trinity Church by Sunday, December 7. Your gift is between

Church and School to collaborate on Master Plan
The Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church and the
Board of Trustees for Trinity Episcopal School have accepted the church and school’s space committee’s recommendation to move forward with the development of a Facility
Master Plan. Representatives from Heimsath Architects of
Austin will be visiting Trinity to evaluate our facility and
meet with church and school families to create a master
plan. This plan will help us prioritize steps to take so we
may meet our current needs as well as position us for future
growth of the entire parish.
Heimsath Architects comes to Trinity with extensive
experience with church/school facilities. It is well known
for being creative in the master plan process by evaluating
needs and building consensus between all the stakeholders
of the facility. It has worked with several Episcopal church
and schools as well as several religious organizations and
churches in the Victoria area, most prominently the Spiritual Renewal Center (Roman Catholic) located southwest
of Victoria. Heimsath is known for religious buildings

While the date has yet to be
set, Heimsath will be hosting a
parish wide workshop where all
are invited to participate in the
master plan process. Over the next several months, all Trinity Church members and school parents are encouraged to
take special note of the facility–where improvements can
be made and where expansion might occur. This will help
when we gather for the workshop.

Trinity Men Fry
Turkey!
O
ne of my favorite times of the year is in November, when the church hosts the annual turkey
dinner. The food is delicious and the partnership in
preparation and execution is a joy. This year saw only a
few changes.
Thanks again to Betty Jo Elder for her many years in
organizing. She had a smile on her face as she was able to
sit and enjoy her meal this year without distraction.
Marc and his crew of men had a set up of fryers, coolers,
and accoutrements knocking out 35 turkeys with skillful
precision. We ladies worked in shifts and had various
duties to make sure the rest of the meal came together to
provide a lovely experience for our Trinity family.

We heartily thank Derel and Susanna Reaves, owners of
Ramsey’s restaurant, for graciously donating and delivering all the tasty side dishes. This was one of many church

events they have so generously given of their time, talent,
and treasure. Members of the congregation brought their
favorite holiday dessert to satisfy any sweet tooth. Reba
and Bill took pictures trying to complete the church pictorial directory and document another year of us sharing
time together.
Next year we will perfect the use of the kitchen machine
which makes hot coffee or tea, not both! In the meantime, many thanks to each and every one who came and
participated in an event which celebrates Thanksgiving
and God’s blessings.

Advent Programs for All Ages
Join us as we prepare for the coming of our Lord! We will begin the
Advent making Advent Wreaths. Young and old alike have enjoyed this
tradition over the centuries. The Advent Wreath is a meaningful symbol
of the beginning of the church year, and a vehicle to tell the Christmas
story. Do you know what all of the colors symbolize? Why do we use a
wreath? Are there other variations? What other symbols do people use
to tell the story?
Our preparations will continue throughout the Advent season with
Advent crafts on December 7. We will be cooking Christmas treats
on December 14. Finally, we will cozy up with hot chocolate and tell
Christmas stories on December 21. All of these activities will take place
in the Parish Hall at 9:30 a.m. on each Sunday of Advent. Bring your
family and friends and enjoy fellowship as we gather together in joyous
anticipation throughout the Advent season.
Epiphany Children’s Pagaent
Back by popular demand! Our Epiphany pageant will be
offered during the 10:30 service on Jan. 4, 2015. This is a
joyous celebration of the arrival of Jesus. Bring your children and grandchildren. There is a part for everyone! Look
for more information in the upcoming weekly emails.

Pine Street
community center
M
ore and more activity continues at Pine
Street–with new and old events. Ongoing is the updating of the building itself, almost all of the central air is
complete! (Thank you, Phil and Forrest!) Gas lines have been
put in, all the duct work done and louvers to all the rooms,
save one, are installed and the heat and air are keeping Pine
Street quite cozy. Attention is turning to the completion of
the shower project which began months ago but was put
on the back burner, to focus time, money and efforts on
installing the central air.
Recovery Ministry continues to be strong on Wednesdays,
Fridays and Sundays and the Manhattan Art Program is
filling the big room each Saturday from 2-4 p.m. through
December 20. The Children’s Discovery Museum used each
room of the facility October 31 for a Children’s Halloween
Event. The Homeless Coalition–made up of representatives from Mid-Coast Connections, VISD, the city and
many other outreach organizations–meets at Pine Street
monthly. Be prepared! Pine Street is scheduled to be used
as the warming shelter for the next really cold spell that hits
Victoria.

The Gateway
Christmas Dinner
F
or the past few years, Trinity
has sponsored a Christmas dinner
party for the men who participate in
the Gateway Project. This year’s dinner party will be at Pine Street Community Center, December 20 (only
participants are invited to this dinner).
The Gateway Project, sponsored by
Mid-Coast Family Services, is a program for men who, with God’s help,
are focusing on becoming independent
and productive members of society.

Patti Zapalac and Duncan and Ada Sutherland have been
busy “organizing” all the wonderful books donated to Pine
Street and a separate room has been designated for a “Children’s Library”. We’re still looking for children’s furniture!
All of the books at Pine Street are part of a unique “library.”
Books may but taken, returned, shared with others or more
importantly, may be kept! “Books for Free” is our rally
cry! We hope this will put books in the hands and homes
of children who don’t have access to much ownership of
books. There will be an Open House on Thursday, Dec. 7
from 5-7 p.m. to introduce the Library at Pine Street. A
presentation will be given at 6 p.m. and refreshments will
be served. “Come and See!” Come see the Library but also
just come and see Pine Street. A lot has taken place in this
old building through the years having started out as the
barracks for the National Guard in the ‘50’s. (If only the
walls could talk!) So drop on by anytime you see a car or
truck in the parking lot. A lot’s happening and there’s more
to come!

In the past, the dinner and the bingo games have been quite lively and
the evenings end on a happy note.

Capers Mid-Winter Camps
Camp Capers offers three weekends of fun, exciting and meaningful Mid-Winter Camps each January.
There is one Mid-Winter session for the following age
groups: elementary, middle school and high school. Each
session has a separate staff and clergy team. We encourage
your child to come to this short, action-packed weekend.
The weekend of your Mid-Winter camp registration begins at 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. The session ends after closing on
Sunday. The closing ceremony begins at 10 a.m.

Camp Capers Father–Son Retreat
The annual Father-Son Retreat at Camp
Capers will be Friday - Sunday, February 6–8. Boys ages
six to 18 are invited to bring their fathers or a fatherly
guardian along to camp. The weekend will strengthen
relationships, equip dads and empower sons. The weekend will be lead by the Revs. Scott Brown, Brad Landry,
and Ripp Hardaway. Cost is $120 per adult and $80 per
child; all meals are provided from Friday dinner through
Sunday lunch. Register online.

Watch & Pray
An Advent Study
W
atch and Pray is a four-week Advent study
offered online from the Episcopal Diocese of West
Texas. This study is based on the readings – gospel, Old Testament, and New Testament – for each of the four Sundays
in Advent. (Blog URL: http://watchandpray-dwtx.org)
The study includes some background material for each week
on Sunday, then a daily reflection — Monday through Friday each week — that will go deeper into some of the themes
from the readings. The reflections will be in both written and
audio format. You can subscribe to receive the material once
Help Wanted
The church is seeking two additional staff members for
the Trinity Nursery to assist Mrs. Lupe Ruiz. This is
a paid position with regular hours on Sunday mornings (either every weekend, or on a rotation). Optional additional hours will vary depending on activities
at the church. Qualified applicants must be 18 years
or older. If you are interested, or know someone who
may be interested, please contact Children’s Ministry Leader Laurie Shamma at 361.550.8234 or call
the church office (361.573.3228) for an interview.
2015 Liturgical Calendars
The church has ordered custom liturgical calendars for the
parish. Look for your copy in the narthex (church entrance)
in late December!
Planning a Baptism?
Holy Baptism, according to the Book of Common
Prayer, is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the
Day of Pentecost, on All Saints’ Day or the Sunday after
All Saints’ Day and on the Feast of the Baptism of our
Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany). It is recommended that, as far as possible, Baptisms be reserved for
these occasions. (BCP p. 312)

Alliance
The Victoria Alliance is all of us. It is our community coming together to create a shared vision. The role
of the Alliance will be to take the vision we, as a community, develop and report openly and consistently on our
progress toward the goals we set.
The Alliance is conducting a survey as part of a large community effort to develop a vision for the future of Victoria
–a shared statement of the kind of community we’d like to
become. We’d like your opinion on what it’s like to live in
Victoria. We are particularly interested in what you think
is good about Victoria that you would like to make sure
we preserve, as well as those aspects about living in Victoria that you would want to see improve. Let your voice be
heard! The survey will be available through January 2015.
