A Message from the Superintendent......
Dear Members of the Youngstown City
School District Community,
This special edition of YCSD Focus eNewsletter is dedicated to recognizing
and honoring the Class of 2014 graduates and the many students, staff, administrators who received an array of
awards of achievement.
Congratulations to the Class of 2014!
Student achievement is the primary
focus within the Youngstown City District. Our 2014 graduates accumulated
a variety of national and state honors.
This year’s commencement ceremonies
awarded diplomas to 45 seniors from
YEC, 206 seniors from East High School
and 43 seniors from the Chaney STEM/
VPA Campus.
Among the 294 graduates, ten received
associate degrees from Youngstown
State University, three were inducted
into the National Honors Society, thirteen were inducted into the National
Technical Honor Society, and six received honors diplomas.
The YCSD Class of 2014 also earned
many financial rewards, including two
YEC seniors receiving full scholarships
to The Ohio State University through
the OSU Young Scholars Program and
the three YEC seniors who each received more than $5,000 in scholarships.
Congratulations to all students who
received awards of achievement at
their respective school building’s Olympiad/Awards Assemblies held throughout this school year as well as students
who participated in the Destination
Imagination Teams placing in the state
tournament and the global finals. A
special thank you is extended to all
principals, teachers, staff, and volunteers whose dedication and hard work
helped to make these assemblies, athletic, and other triumphs possible and
memorable experiences for participating students and their families.
Congratulations to the two teachers at
McGuffey Elementary School who were
selected this year’s recipients of the
“Teacher of the Year Award”, the
teacher at Choffin Career & Technical
Center who selected the recipient of
this year’s “Athena Award”, and the
teacher at Choffin who was designated
a “Master Teacher”.
Last, but certainly not least, congratula-
Connie Hathorn, Ph.D.
Superintendent
tions to our building principals for
providing the instructional leadership that held up student achievement as the ultimate goal.
Please take the time to read
through this special e-newsletter
to fully appreciate the hard work,
dedication, and academic achievement taking place throughout the
district. You, like I, will be very
proud of the many accomplishments achieved this school year!
Sincerely,
Connie Hathorn, Ph.D.

Congratulations 2014 Teacher’s of the Year
TWO TEACHERS OF THE YEAR, ANDREA ELBERTY AND ANDREA PATTON,
AND NOMINEES ARE HONORED AT YCSD TEACHER OF THE YEAR BANQUET
The Youngstown City School held its annual Teacher of the Year Banquet on Thursday, May 29, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at
the Davis Center at Riverside Gardens. State Senator Joe Schiavoni was the featured speaker.
This year two teachers, Andrea Elberty and Andrea Patton, are receiving the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year Award. Both
“Andreas” are Intervention Specialists who team teach autistic students in Grades 2-6 at William Holmes McGuffey Elementary School.
Andrea Elberty, who has taught in the Youngstown district for the past 23 years, attributes her decision to become a teacher to her
mother, a former educational assistant at Leonard Kirtz School, and her teachers while a student at Kirkmere Elementary, Volney Rogers Jr. High School, and Chaney High School. “When I entered Youngstown State University in the fall of 1985, it was a given that I
chose to become a teacher, and I proudly declared special education as my major—hopeful and optimistic in my desire to make a difference in the lives of the special needs students that I would have the privilege of teaching,” says Elberty.
Elberty is a graduate of Youngstown State University, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1991, and a Master of Science in
Education in 1996. She has served on the Chaney Literacy Team, Local Professional Development Committee, and participated in the
Kindergarten Standards Roll Out and the Council for Exceptional Children. In addition, she has received a Youngstown Best Academic
Practice School Award and Ameritech Foundation Impact Award.
Andrea Patton, has taught in the Youngstown district for the past 28 years also attributes her decision to become a special education
teacher to her mother, a former teacher at Garfield Elementary School, and a class field trip she attended. “My greatest contribution
and accomplishment in education is giving my students with autism, the tools with which they can succeed in life. When you believe
every student can soar beyond any imagined limits, with great patience, stamina, compassion, and a lot of thinking outside the box, it
becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy,” say Patton.
Patton, a graduate of Youngstown State University, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1986, and a Master of Science in
Education in 1991. She has served on the Superintendent’s Think Tank, the Superintendent’s Spirit Committee for the OAA, the Positive Student Support Team, and numerous curriculum and assessment committees. Patton has received a Giant Eagle Class Act
Award, YSU Educational Foundation Award, Mahoning County Retired Teachers Award, and YSU Excellence in Student Teaching
Award.

Students at Programs of Promise participated in a laying of the
wreath ceremony on Friday, May 23, 2014, in honor of Memorial Day. Our guest of honor was Mr. Joe Nudo, a Woodrow
Wilson High School alumni and retired teacher, whose brother
Dominic Nudo (a 1944 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High
School) was killed in battle on Okinawa in 1945. Mr. Tod Morris, current principal of Wilson, read a dedication to all members of our nation’s military, past and present. Choir students
sang “God Bless America” and then “The Star Spangled Banner” accompanied by Mrs. Popio on the keyboard. One student had the honor of placing a wreath dedicated to our veterans under Wilson’s marble war memorial to fallen veterans,
which was once hung on the exterior of the original Woodrow
Wilson High School.
To commemorate Memorial Day, staff and students wore red
poppies handmade by veterans and provided by The American
Legion. The red poppies are symbols of sacrifices made by
members of our nation’s military. They obtain their significance from a poem titled “In Flanders Fields,” written by John
McCrae in 1915. The poem references bright red poppies
growing over the graves of fallen soldiers. Students learned
that the Butler Institute of American Art houses the painting In
Flanders Field - Where Soldiers Sleep and Poppies Grow by
Robert Vonnoh, which was inspired by the poem, in their permanent collection. Students also participated in lessons about
history, military service, veterans, and other topics pertaining

THE HANDSON VOLUNTEER NETWORK HOLDS PROJECT MORE APPRECIATION LUNCHEON AT
MCGUFFEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On Thursday, May 29, 2014, the HandsOn Volunteer Network held an Appreciation Luncheon to recognize students, parents,
teachers participating in Project MORE and volunteers in the RSVP Lead with Experience Volunteers program. The luncheon
was held at William Holmes McGuffey Elementary School.
Project MORE (Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence) is a scientifically based reading program for K-12 students with disabilities and those at risk for reading failure. McGuffey Elementary along with tutors from the HandsOn Volunteer Network’s
RSVP program volunteers have collaborated to offer selected students tutoring service. The program was created to be Effective, Affordable, Replicable, and Sustainable (EARS) for local school districts with minimal funds required. Project MORE has
collaborated with the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities since 1999. The Ohio Department of Education’s Office for Exceptional Children & State Support Teams joined the collaboration in 2010 and the Ohio Department of Aging joined the partnership in 2013 by utilizing the RSVP Lead with Experience programs.
McGuffey Elementary began Project MORE as a school initiative this school year for students needing the support and advantage of one-on-one supplemental instruction. “We are excited about being able to offer help to our students with disabilities because up until now there has been no programs in place for our students with disabilities as far as extra services,” says
Cathy Dorbish, Principal, McGuffey School. “Ten students and a strong volunteer base of RSVP volunteers who recognize the
impact their volunteer service can make in the lives of children began the successful journey to furthering their academic improvement.”
“I am elated about the benefits of Project MORE and what it can offer to not only students and parents, but also the school
district and the community as a whole,” says Addonnus Harden, the RSVP Program Director. “We congratulate the students
who have made gains during their involvement with Project MORE this school year.” There are plans to introduce Project
HONORS STUDENTS FROM EAST HIGH SCHOOL WILL WORK WITH PRESCHOOLERS AT MARTIN LUTHER
KING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON EARTH DAY PROJECT
On Wednesday, April 30, 2014, students in the East High School Honors Program worked with young students attending the
preschool program at Martin Luther King Elementary School on a community service project in recognition of “Earth Day”. On
that day, the high school students joined the preschoolers and their parents, along with a character called “Dr. Cardboard” to
build life-size rocket ships and space shuttles from “cardboard”. They will also use other re-purposed materials to help enhance the knowledge of the preschoolers about outer space. The interactive and fun activity was held in the gym at Martin
Luther King Elementary School, 2724 Mariner Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio 44505.
Through this unique partnership, the high school students were able to make active use of their knowledge from the classroom in a practical/real world way. In doing so, throughout the year, they work together to encourage and foster social emotional learning among preschoolers to help them learn to feel good about themselves, build self esteem by successfully participating in positive activities, and practice being kind to others—all while having high school role models that they can look up
to.
“We have been able to give back to the community in a way that allows us to train up our own students to be productive
members of society who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives around them,” says Honors English Teacher, Selina
Cotton. “Young children need heroes more now than ever, and for each moment we are there, that’s exactly what our students are to them. This is a partnership that not only provides a sense of community by working together with other schools in
our district, but again, it provides an opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to the real
world.”

MCGUFFEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HOSTS ITS FIRST DINNER FOR FATHERS & SONS
On Wednesday, April 30, 2014, male students attending the W. H. McGuffey Elementary School and their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, nephews and other significant role models are invited to attend the school’s “1st Annual Father & Son Dinner”. The dinner was
held at The Elm Tree, 170 Walton Avenue, Struthers, Ohio 44471, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. This was a “black-tie/formal attire”
affair. The purpose of the father and son dinner is to bring young male students attending McGuffey Elementary together with a positive male role model in their lives to share an evening of fun and excitement that will include entertainment, prizes, and good food.
The evening’s master of ceremonies was Jamael Tito Brown, former City Councilman and Council President. The guest speaker was
William “Guy” Burney, Coordinator, Community Initiative to Reduce Violence (C.I.R.V.). Entertainment was provided by Julius Veal.
The cost to attend is $12/adults and $10/students. Volunteers and sponsors are still needed
THE YOUNGSTOWN FOUNDATION AWARDS $60,000 GRANT TO YOUNGSTOWN CITY SCHOOLS
The Youngstown City School District was pleased to announce the award of a $60,000 grant from The Youngstown Foundation. The
grant will help to expand the work of the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations (QISA).
Since September 2012, the school district and QISA has worked collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, and staff to
change school culture as part of a comprehensive plan to improve the academic standing of the district.
“We are extremely grateful for The Youngstown Foundation’s grant award,” said Superintendent, Dr. Connie Hathorn. “These
funds will allow our students, parents, teachers, and staff to continue to benefit from the QISA team’s shared commitment to student aspirations and diverse expertise in educational leadership.”
Founded by Dr. Russell J. Quaglia, QISA is an independent nonprofit organization located in Portland, Maine. The QISA staff of professional educators conducts research and develops program materials and initiatives on a national and international scale, working directly with students, teachers, school leaders, parents, and educational policy makers.
YOUNGSTOWN CITY SCHOOLS HOSTS A SPECIAL DONOR APPRECIATION EVENT
Youngstown City Schools hosted a special event to say thank you to donors supporting programs for students, principals, and
teachers throughout the district. More than 300 donors were invited to attend this special event, “An Evening of Stars”, that was
held on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., at East High School.
The district is thankful for its diverse donor list that include individuals, businesses, elected officials, foundations, fraternities/
sororities, volunteers, and community, educational, health, religious and for-profit/non-profit organizations throughout the Mahoning Valley, as well as across the state of Ohio and other parts of the country.
“We are extremely grateful to all donors who support Youngstown City Schools. Without their generosity, the district would not
be what it is today,” says Superintendent, Dr. Connie Hathorn. “We value our donor community’s generous donations of time,
materials, and funding that so profoundly enhance educational opportunities for all of our students. The assistance of individual
or group donations has enabled our district to accomplish so much more than we could ever do on our own. We want our donors
to know that they are appreciated and are indeed our bright and shining stars.”
The thank you event began with a reception that gave donors the opportunity to meet and mingle with each other while enjoying
delicious hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Following the reception, donors were shown how much they are appreciated by special performances and expressions of thanks from students, and a special message from the Superintendent, Dr. Connie Hathorn.

YCSD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TRAVEL ON A 10-DAY SOJOURN TO THE PAST
On Thursday, March 27, eight high school students attending Youngstown City Schools will be leaving for Sojourn to the Past, a 10day life changing, leadership development, and emersion program to Civil Rights sites throughout the South. They will depart Youngstown at 8:00 a.m., and fly from Akron/Canton Airport to Atlanta, Georgia, where they will meet Jeff Steinberg, Director of Sojourn to
the Past, and approximately seventy students from California.
During the course of the journey, these students will travel to Atlanta, Selma, Montgomery, Birmingham, Meridian, Jackson, Little
Rock, Memphis, and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. They will meet well-known leaders of the Civil Rights Movement such as Congressman
John Lewis, who flies to Atlanta each year to meet with the Sojourn students because he believes the Sojourn experience is truly life
changing. The students will also meet Minnijean Brown Trickey and Elizabeth Eckford of the Little Rock Nine; the family of Denise
McNair, who was one of the four little girls killed in the bombing of the Sixteenth St. Baptist Church by the KKK; Jimmy Webb, who
participated in Bloody Sunday" and many others. This year the students will meet the police chief of Montgomery, Kevin Murphy,
who is determined to change the image of the Montgomery police department.
The students learn the lessons of the Civil Rights Movement such as nonviolence, justice, compassion, tolerance, hope, forgiveness,
not being a silent witness, civic responsibility. They learn that this trip is not about them but about the people who put their lives on
the line for all Americans. The students are challenged and asked what are they willing to put their lives on the line for. Like the children of Birmingham, they realize they have the power to make a difference first in their own lives and then in their school and community. In Memphis, they develop an action plan to implement when they return home.
This is a working trip for the students have read Walking With the Wind by Congressman John Lewis before going on the journey, and
they have lessons each day and homework every night. They even have an assignment on the airplane. Each student receives a full
history credit.
The students participating this year are:
Jabrell Walker – Youngstown Early College (10th)
Ciera Warman - Chaney (10th)
Luis Velasquez - Chaney (10th)
Kemani Bailey - Chaney (10th)
Precious Boone - Chaney (10th)
Savannah Sockwell - East (11th)
Sir'Taizhia Johnson - East (10th)
Shelby Johnson - Choffin (11th)
Also traveling with will be Sean Barron, who is currently writing a book about Sojourn to the Past and Rev. Patricia Christ, President,
Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past. Everyone will return to Youngstown on Saturday, April 5th.
YSU Penguin, Harding Elementary Pen Pals Hold Year’s Closing Ceremony
A partnership between Youngstown State University, Harding Elementary School, and the YSU Penguin Pen Pals will reach another milestone this week when Harding students will receive certificates and meet with their YSU Scholar Pen Pals during this year’s closing ceremony at the YSU campus. The closing ceremony begam at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at YSU in Kilcawley Center.
Throughout the year, 63 Harding Elementary students in the third and fourth grades exchanged writings in their journals every other
week totaling 12 cycles for the academic year. This year’s participating students will continue with the program when they enter the
fifth grade. Next fall, a new class of fourth grader students will enter the program, which will increase the number of participants tremendously! Dr. Amy Cossentino, Assistant Director, University Scholars & Honors Program at YSU coordinates the program.
The benefit of participation in the Pen Pals Program have been evident by both teachers and YSU Penguin Pals, observing an improvement in the students’ writing skills, spelling and penmanship over the past year. When asked about the benefits of the program, Susan
Koulianos, Principal at Harding said, “Our students have been writing to their Pen Pals all year. The program has improved our writing
strategies and editing techniques. Our students look forward to getting their letter responses back. Crates with their letter journals travel back and forth from Harding to YSU. Both parties have been very engaged in this process and are timely with completing the task.”

3-D printing is nothing new to this area, but now high school students are making 3-D printers for other students. Choffin Career and Technical Center has a prototype 3-D printer, but ones just like it soon will be in 20 schools in Northeast Ohio.
Students from Chaney High School made some of the parts for the printer, while precision machining students at Choffin basically
built the backbone of the printer. That task required a lot of math. “You’re measuring this exactly, like within thousandths of an
inch, so it’s very specific,” said precision machining student Jaquan Miller. “It’s been a really nice experience to actually do things
hands on, actually learn just by doing it by yourself,” said fellow student Elijah Bowers. Printers will be sent to schools in kits so students can build them and learn how they work. That same printer then can be taken apart and sent to another class too. Because
printing is slow, the 20 printers at Choffin will make the final product. “The printer parts go as a kit to other schools, where the kids
will assemble them into a 3-D printer, learn how a 3-D printer works, learn the basics of it, learn how to maintain it, put it together,
use it for projects,” said Jack Scott, president of Applied Systems Technology Transfer. Scott moved his company to Youngstown in
2010. At first, he had a contract to work with high schools like Chaney. “We’ve expanded it down to primary schools, as well as middle schools,” Scott said. The 3-D printer partnership with Chaney and Choffin is part of AST2′s Inventor Cloud Program, a STEM education program for students in grades K-12, as well as post-secondary schools. Students as young as 3rd grade are taking Inventor
Cloud classes, according to Youngstown School Superintendent Dr. Connie Hathorn.
YOUNGSTOWN CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE!
The Youngstown City School District’s teachers, administrators, staff, and students returned to their
building on Tuesday, February 18, was greeted with the district’s new website.
The new site, still located at www.ycsd.org, is designed to be a more user-friendly, informative, and
interactive site that will provide parents, students, teachers, staff, and the community about what is
happening in the district. It offers a more contemporary look, with improved navigation and functionality throughout. The site was
also updated to be more easily read and accessible on mobile devices. The school district worked with eSchoolView, a web design
company based in Columbus, Ohio, that focuses on school websites, to develop the website’s new look.
The launch of the new site is also the unveiling of the district’s new logo. It was designed by Naheem Nicholas Hassan, a junior in
Choffin Career and Technical Center’s Digital Graphic Design and Imaging Class. Nick is one of fourteen students who submitted logo
designs during the district’s “New Website Logo Competition” held between students in Chaney VPA and Choffin’s graphic arts programs. Naheem's design was selected by the district’s new website committee as the one that most illustrated the theme of the logo
competition: academic excellence through student choice. His design has a circle that is highlighted by the words Dream, Achieve,
Succeed. We encourage the public to visit the website to see the new logo.
The new site is easier to navigate and features drop-down menus at the top of the page for Parents, Students, Staff and Community
and additional navigation buttons for main content areas such as About YCSD, Schools (and individual school sites for all schools in
the district), Leadership, Calendar, Departments, and Forms & Links. Visitors to the site will also see a rotating slideshow of pictures
featuring Youngstown City School District students, staff, and events.
To keep all site visitors apprised of the many district and school events, there is a new section on the home page showing district
news releases, calendars, and a Facebook page feed that visually shows up-to-the-minute posts as they are made. In addition, there
are new links that provide quick and easy access to messages from the superintendent, lunch menus, staff directories, the eNewsletter and information on school safety.
Superintendent, Dr. Connie Hathorn, says, “We hope that everyone finds the information they need on the new website. It is our goal
to use the site to inform the public of the great things going on every day in our district and in our community. If there is information
that you need and cannot find, please give us feedback using Contact Us under the drop-down menus, so that we can make the site
better. Parents and community members are invited to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.”

Library & Media Services 2013-2014 Activities
The Public Library of Youngstown and MahoningCounty isin partnership with Youngstown City Schools to pilot their new
READ cards and to bring books to the school via the new "pop-up library" service :http://www.librarvvisit.org/
popuplibrary.aspx .
The READ cards enable students to check out a maximum of two books (no DVDs or CDs) without accumulating late fees.
Presently, two of our elementary schools are participating. They are Williamson and Harding. The
intent is to have all of our elementary schools participating next year. The participating grade levels are
K-3.
The cards and borrowed books have been kept in the classroom by the teacher for easy access during
The Public Library visits. However, at the end of school, the teachers will be giving the READ cards to
the students so that they can use them during the summer at any of the fifteen branches of the Public
Library. When the students go home for the summer, a letter of explanation for parents and guardians will be provided as well as information on their Summer Reading Club.
"
The schedule for each school is as follows:
Williamson
2/24 -K-1
3/10 -2-3
3/24-K-1
4/7 -2-3
4/28 -K-1
5/12-2-3
Harding
3/5 -K-1
3/19 -2-3
4/2 -K-1
4/23 -2-3
5/7 -K-1
5/21 -2-3
We will be contacting each elementary school in September to set up these "pop-up" Public Library
visits and to register the rest of our K-3rd graders for the READ card. Two or three staff members at

Discovery Program at Kirkmere
 October - started the Book-It-Program and how it works with calendars to take home to mark the time they
spend reading at home.
 December - Book-It book reviews were given to all children to fill-out about a book he/she had read and what
they liked about the book. The book reviews were then displayed outside the library for all to read.
 February - Black History Month - displayed pictures of African American achievers, then students were asked
to match the names to the picture. The students were very excited about matching the names to the faces.
 April - National Library Week was celebrated by asking the children to write a story, rap, or song about "HOW
THE LIBRARY CHANGES LIVES." The students submitted their entries and were judged by the librarians and
several staff members. The winners of the McDonald gift cards were Dexter Grant and Mailyn Bonilla. Second
place winners received Wendy's Frosty cards. All entries were displayed in and around the library.
The week before spring break the students used I-Pads for research on the states using FACTCITE by using a questionnaire made by the librarians. Each child had a different state to investigate.

Wilson
February - Classes in the library will be doing lessons on black history. Students will also come up with their own
search queries in relation to Black History Month (example: Civil Rights, Emmett Till, Underground Railroad). They
will then transfer this skill to the skill of searching using an electronic encyclopedia (in this case World Book Student via INFOHIO). They will search one event in Black History, and they will use the Biography section of the encyclopedia to search one notable figure. Students will be invited to present their findings to the class on a volunteer basis. Next month (March), students will not completely leave the theme of Black History to reinforce two
main lessons of Black History Month:
1. Black History is important all through the year - not just in February, and
2. Black History is important to everyone in America
