(3rd QB) Coach Bill Cowher Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Coach Bill Cowher: What can you say it was a really hard fought game? We couldn’t do almost anything in the first half. We had some third down and makeables and we just couldn’t convert a third down. We couldn’t get anything going. And certainly our defense did a super job with the turnovers, and they were big. We did a good job of shutting down Curtis Martin. He is a good back and that is a good football team. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them again. What ran through your head when that halfback option call came down? I was suggesting it so we knew we were going to do it in that situation. We talked about it during the week. Why? It was at that point in the field that we felt like it was a good play because we knew that they would be thinking run since we had been running the ball pretty well, and Jerome (Bettis) has thrown a few of those in his career. We just pulled it out. We have had it, and obviously timing is everything with plays like that. What are you thoughts on clinching the division? Well it’s the first step. You have to enjoy it and we have talked about it before. This football team has been a very focused team and they understand that it’s a journey. But you have to take it one step at a time and this is the first step. We knew that this was a good football team that we were playing today. We knew that it was going to be a battle. We knew it was probably going to be low scoring, and all the other things we talked about you just have to keep grinding away. You have to keep believing. You can’t start questioning yourself. It’s almost like a battle of wills that took place out there today and who was going flinch first. And I think that certainly we came up with a couple more big plays than they did and that was really the difference in the game. Why did you stay with Jerome in the backfield at the start of that last drive? He was running well if you have been watching him. We wanted to get him into the game early because I thought last week we didn’t get him in the game enough. We got him in there in the second quarter and I thought that he was running really well. It was getting cold and Duce’s hamstring started to feel it a little bit. So we were mixing it but then Jerome came in and was hammering it pretty good. He has been running really well. It’s so nice to have both of those guys back there when you don’t have to change your style of running and way that they both run, we are going to need them both even down this stretch and it’s just nice to have both of those guys. Duce is getting his carries, he is getting himself back in form, and certainly the time that he was out Jerome has gotten him into a very good rhyme running the football. Can you talk about your defense being in the right place at the right time? They played well, you can’t say enough. The play that Troy makes, that has been him. He’s an amazing player. You look at the front and all of a sudden Clark Haggans goes down with an injury and we put James Harrison in there on first and second down and we put Alonzo (Jackson) in there on third down to take his spot. I thought that those two guys played really well. James Page 1 of 3 Coach Bill Cowher Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Farrior came up with another big play and Joey (Porter) played very well. And in the secondary, they hit the one long pass on Willie (Williams) but I thought for the most part that Deshea (Townsend) has played well, Chris Hope. I can’t say enough about our defense, they have been playing very, very well. Was today just an average day for Ben (Roethlisberger) today? I give them credit, those guys can generate some pressure with their four man rush. It’s a good defense over there. They’re right it’s not a fluke that is one heck of a defense. Their corners played well. Like I said it was going to be that type of day but the one thing I liked about Ben was when the game was there in the fourth quarter he never really fretted. He hung in there and threw a great pass to Lee Mays on the third which I thought was biggest play of the game. What is the extent of (Clark) Haggans injury? It’s a groin. Eleven straight can you now take a step back and take a look at what has happened so far? The only thing we are worrying about right now is next week in New York. You know what, you don’t reflect, and we’re not reflecting and we aren’t looking too far ahead. We know at this time I have talked about what is at stake and there is nothing wrong with talking about that. But we recognize that you don’t look any further then the next week. You don’t reflect when you are in the middle of something and we aren’t going to do that. It’s one game at a time and next week is a short week were we have to play on Saturday, and going up to New York it is going to be a tough game. What can you say about the backups coming in a playing when a starter has gone down? Like I have said before, it’s been a collective effort. We are a football team. People have said and we talked about it this morning, people keep waiting to say that you guys can’t keep doing this and you have to have a let down. But when you have a football team you won’t have a let down because you can draw energy from your next teammate. You can exude confidence because you can do so much together, and so it doesn’t need any one guy. It just takes a guy to pick another guy up. That’s why I’m saying that this is a football team and these guys understand that, they believe that, and they trust that so no one player is bigger than this football team. And this has been proven time and time again when other players have had to step up and certain elements of your team have to be there. We have been in a lot of close games and no one has flinched. We’re not that much better then any other team that we play. That is a good football team. We were just fortunate today and we can’t lose the edge. We cannot overlook anybody or anything and we still have to get better. When you sit there with less than 50 yards that we had in the first half, we can’t afford to do that on a regular basis. We have somehow come out of the gates and be more efficient on third down but we will work on that this week. Isn’t defense about being in the right place at the right time? That’s all a part of it. You have to be sure that you do things collectively. We do a lot of blitzing and they stayed in there with max protection a few times and we still hit a couple of blitz, they Page 2 of 3 Coach Bill Cowher Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 took a little bit of a page out of Jacksonville which was fine and stay back a little bit so it is a little bit of a chess game that you are playing. The players execute what we do, we make some adjustments in the course of some games and they have been about to handle that. Every week is a dog fight and right now they’re playing well and they are playing with a lot of confidence. Is this the freshest that (Jerome) Bettis has looked since the summer? Yes, it is. He came in probably in the best shape and the best he’s felt in the last three years and certainly how the season has unfolded he is just kind of waiting to get going. So when Duce went down he had a nice run and I know last week he was kind of chomping a little bit. You can see him on the sideline running in place. His waiting to get out there and it’s really good to have a healthy Duce and Jerome right now. Are you surprised that Jerome has played is this big of a role? I never really knew how it would unfold, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I don’t know if surprise would mean that you envision something. I never really knew how this would unfold, it was hard to say. The way it has unfolded has certainly been nice to have both those guys. Any other injuries? The only one I know of is Clark. Did Plaxico Burress have a set back this week? No. We are just acting on the side of caution. The reason I sat him down was because I didn’t him to get close to the game and his juices start to get going. We need to be smart about him. We need him down the stretch and we will continue to take a very smart approach with him. Can you talk about the play of Troy Polamalu this season? Let me say this, Troy Polamalu is the best safety in the game today. And I’ll go on record in saying that. The things you ask him to do and the production that he has, and what he does week in and week out, I wouldn’t want any other guy. Is he more versatile because he is more involved in coverage then other safeties? Versatile? Yes. We could put him out there and he could be one of the best slot cover guys that you have. He has a lot of Carnell Lake abilities. He is that type of guy. He can cover like a corner. He can hit like a safety. He’s amazingly instinctive. We are trying to do something more and more to kind of free him up and allow him to maybe get a feel for the game and not harness him at all. He is the type of guy you can do that with. Page 3 of 3 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Ben Roethlisberger: RE: The screen pass and the two passes down that one drive before the touchdown: We knew they were rushing. The ends were really coming up the field real hard. We thought we had a good shot at getting them on the screen. We got the ball out, a lot defenders went to the left, you had the screen to the right, and then come back with two big pass plays before that. Hines makes a good play, and gets down field. So, I can’t give enough credit to those guys because they are the playmakers. What kind of quarterback is Jerome Bettis? Obviously, a pretty good one. I think his quarterback rating is pretty good. He came over and joked that he knows what we go through now. I told him he did not see Jerame Tuman, he just threw it up and hoped that it made it. He made a great play. What happened on the long pass play to Lee Mays? We knew he was jumping a lot. It seemed like very time we called a play that hopefully he would jump on, he wasn’t in the game. It just works out that way. We did finally get him on the last play where Lee (Mays) made a great play, a great catch and run. It was one of those things where he was an aggressive player, and we knew that coming in. RE: The last touchdown drive: It was the same sort of thing. We knew they had two timeouts so we had to get first downs. The way they were running certain defenses where they had a bunch of big guys in, we called on big personnel. Was it a 4-4? Yes, so they had a bunch of linebackers in trying to stop the run. We actually had a run play called at the beginning. They changed it at the last minute, so we went to a pass play. The first one that actually played perfect. I tried to back shoulder, Hines kind of slipped, and then the next play we actually hit a big play. So it was just a big play. I give a lot of credit to the linemen up front for giving me time and then just having patience with what we have to do. Can you talk about Jerome Bettis and his ability to come in and change up the game a little bit? It is hard to talk about what he does because it is unbelievable. He comes in and you think he is going down on the third down, on his touchdown where you think he is going down, he gets the first down, and he throws a touchdown pass. You can’t say enough about what Jerome means to this team. If he is not on the field, it is his leadership. When he is on the field, it is his hard running and his leadership. You can’t say enough about what Jerome means to this team. Page 1 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Can you talk about your pass to Lee Mays? Like I said, we thought we could get them, they had been jumping a lot of routes. We thought we would be able to get them with a double move, we were hoping, at least. Lee sold the slant great. I think they probably watched a lot of film and saw us running some slants. If it was a slant, my thing was to throw it out away from the safety. Lee said he was digging to get underneath him and he caught it. Actually, when I saw the tackle come, he kind of slid down. I thought Lee was going to break out of it. But Lee made a great play. That is a huge play in that point of the game where we needed it the most. The first pass in the series, was that supposed to be an out and up? Yes, it was supposed to be an out and up. We actually did not have the cornerback in there that we wanted. They played off of it. It was kind of a throw it wide to Hines and maybe he will make a play. It kind of slipped a little more than it was supposed to. With that next pass, how did you keep the ball, because it almost bounced into somebody and the ball came out, but you were able to bounce around it? It was one of those things, where it seems like they bring extra guys and the line is trying to hold three and four guys off at a time. You bounce off somebody, Dan Kreider bounces out and you don’t expect a fullback to make moves and a catch like that. But I have all the confidence in everybody on that field, and that includes our fullbacks. What were they doing defensively in the first half? They were bringing a lot of people. I think penalties hurt us a lot. We had a bunch of completions and big plays called back, all kinds of things happened. We did not play a first good half of football offensively. We made some mistakes, but the good thing is that we got out with the win, and we will get to check our mistakes, and hopefully won’t make them again. Did home field play a factor? Absolutely, this is Pittsburgh weather. It got colder as the night went. The crowd showed how amazing the fans that we have are. They stayed through it. It seems that they bring so much energy to the field that it warms us up because they are getting excited. It was a Pittsburgh game today. How big is it to win the division title? Huge. We are really going to enjoy this win today and tomorrow. Tuesday, we are forgetting about it because we are 0-0 going into Tuesday. We have to go to New York and play a good Giants football team. It will be the biggest game of the year for us. Were the Jets giving you a lot of defensive alignments? We had all kinds of fronts. We had six-man front, five-man front, that is what happens when you run the ball as effectively as we do. You are going to see all kinds of things - blitzes, defenses, Page 2 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 everything. Give credit to the offensive line, they were able to identify the fronts, identify who they needed to block. Not every play was a big play, but we made plays when we needed to. What was your reaction on the halfback pass? When the play call came out, I looked at my wristband and I did not know if he said the wrong number because I saw what play it was. I told Jerome (Bettis), here is a chance to make a play. He probably won’t tell you this, we ran it at practice, and it fell about five yards short of the tight end and he said he is not a practice player. I handed the ball off and I just turned around and saw him make a play. That is Jerome for you. Jerome Bettis: Was that an option play? No, not the option. It was a halfback pass that came highly scrutinized. Ben (Roethlisberger) told the truth. In practice, it was a horrible pass. It was funny because it was a horrible pass in practice. Then Saturday, we came out and ran it and they let Duce (Staley) run it. I told Coach that was not right, that was so unfair. He was just laughing and joking. They came to me and got off a good pass. Explain your quarterback grip? The quarterback grip is not very good. I tried to get it around the laces, just so I could get it up and over. I did not want it to get stuck because I had those gloves on. I just tried to get it up and over that safety that was out there and I was fortunate to get it over there. I made the mistake in practice of a line drive, so I learn from my mistakes. Were you surprised that play was called? I was not surprised. we have thrown the ball in situations like that before. I have a couple touchdowns under my belt already. I believe this is the third touchdown for me. I knew if the opportunity presented itself, they were not afraid to call it. Coach Dick (Hoak) kind of gave me the last bit of advice, he said if it is not there, tuck it and run with it. That was my understanding going into the game. RE: On being a quarterback: No, I wish. I don’t think I am gong to be a quarterback too many times. Maybe one time a season. You were right up along the line of scrimmage there when you did that? Every indication in terms of our formation and our tendencies were that when we get into that formation which we max at the tight end, we always run the ball. It has always been a counter type of a play. We knew they were going to read our tendencies and they would expect a run in that particular situation. It was a great call playing against our tendencies. Page 3 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Any concerns about Duce’s hamstring? No concerns. After he caught one of the passes and took off, he kind of aggravated it a little bit, I believe. I really think he pulled back so that he would not hurt it that seriously. Hopefully, with a little rest, he should be fine. What was the name of the play? It was a 4-38 counter pass. Are you enjoying this role? I would be lying if I said I love this role. My whole career, I have been the feature back. This is something I have grown to work within in terms of understanding what my role is and really, really trying to excel in that role. It is one of those situations that I am finding a way to flourish in the role that has been given to me. I understand, and I think it is the best situation for this football team. Did your touchdown pass help on your touchdown run? Actually, what we did with the touchdown run was the run off the pass. We threw the pass first and then we came back with the run. They played it a little looser than they probably would have had we not burned them on the throw. While I was able to get out there on the corner, they were expecting me to really pound it up in there and I got on the edge and was able to get a little step on and create some separation. The old legs got turning once again. Was there any discussion on the sidelines about that play, or did Ben just relay it in the huddle? It was just called in. It was relayed in to Ben. He had to say a little bit before he called it just to kind of get me ready for the call. When he called it, I knew it was an opportunity that I had to make good on. Were you surprised that it was so tough going for three quarters? No, I was not surprised at all. This is a playoff caliber football team that we played. They are in the top 10 in defense. They are in the top 10 in rushing offense. We understood it was going to be a slugfest, the bottom line was who got the bigger punches late in the game. Could you sense late in the game that maybe they were starting to wear down? Both teams were starting to wear down a little bit. Fortunately for me I was fresh because I did not have the opportunity that much. I was chomping at the bit to get in there and we were able to get some creases. Once we got through the creases, I just refused to let one guy take me down. I think the guys really kind of ran with the energy I brought out there late in the game. Page 4 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Are you forcing Bill’s decision to keep you and give you more playing time? I think it is a situation where you want to try to keep both guys fresh and keep both guys in the game, in the groove of the game. The one benefit for us is that there are not different styles. It is the same style. So you don’t have to change anything. All you do is insert A and insert B, and insert A, and you just keep going. It is not a situation where everything has to change when a different guy goes in there. So I really think we are able to compliment each other very well. RE: Going in on that last drive? It was significant in the sense that we needed to close the game out. That was the only significance. This was the opportunity that was presented, and you have to take advantage of it. The way that I look at it, every time I get into a game, it is an opportunity for me so I need to make the best of it because the opportunities are not coming as much. So you have to take advantage of them when you get in. Before the touchdown drives, did it occur to you that you were in a game that you weren’t as committed to the run as you are supposed to be? No, it was a situation where we were going up against a good defense against the run. They did some things to try to prevent the running game. They showed some things they had not really showed all year long and stayed with it. They made the situation to the point where they were daring us to throw the football because they were going to stack the line of scrimmage and not let you run the ball. It was one of those one of those types of situations. Late in the game we were able to wear on them a little bit and get some creases. Did aggressiveness help that touchdown pass work? It was our assertiveness, and really it was our tendencies. I don’t think it was the aggressiveness. It was the tendencies. When we get into third and short situations, or situations where we need a yard, two yards, that has been our bread and butter play. So them looking at the film, you would expect them to assume that was the play that was coming. We got a couple things off of that motion. We have done some bootlegs with Ben and we have been able to pick up first downs in that situation because people have been playing to tendencies. This was another time we were able to take advantage of it. Can you talk about your role, was there a point in the year where that clicked? It clicked with me in the sense that you can look at in two ways. You can look at it as you were demoted, and everything is negative and you look at everything from a down side saying this is what I am relegated to, and they are trying to get me out of here. Or you can look at it say this gives me an opportunity to stay fresh and when I do get the opportunity, take advantage of it. So, be ready, go to practice excited about what you are doing, and just be ready. That is the attitude I have taken with the situation. I have always been ready. When I get in practice, I am practicing as if I am going to get 30 carries. If it doesn’t happen, then it doesn’t. But If it does I am ready for it and it has been paying off for me. Page 5 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Is this the most fresh you felt this late in the season? It has been a long time. Usually, at this point of the season, I am pretty banged up. But my body feels as if it was week seven or eight because I have not taken a big beating. I went through a stretch there where my tongue was hanging out, but for the most part, I have been healthy. I think it has been paying dividends for the team. Can you comment on Charlie Weis’ hiring at Notre Dame? I think it is a good situation. He is a proven coach. At this stage, they need a proven guy to go in there and re-establish the confidence. LB Clark Haggans Talk about the performance of the defense. “[My] hats off to them. They came out, they played well, they played solid. We knew it was going to be a game of field position. They were some times when [the score] was 3-3 [or] 3-0, but the offense got on track and they kept pounding their defense. We just came up big.” What are your thoughts on Alonzo Jackson and James Harrison and how they did in your place? “They did a great job. They came in there [and] they put pressure on [Jets QB Chad Pennington]. People step up every week and that’s what’s been going on this whole season. [When] one guy goes down, more people step up. That’s what you have to do.” WR Lee Mayes Did your two catches last week give you confidence that you could make a play when you needed to? “Coaches always tell you to go out there and make a play, whether you are [on] offense, defense or special teams. They called that play – a little up and go move – and he bit on it. Seven [Ben Roethlisberger] put it right there in the bread basket and I made a nice catch for it.” What does it mean to you to know that they came to you last week and this week late in the game to make the big play? “It definitely lifts your confidence knowing that coaches still believe in you, still trust in you and know the ability that you have that you are going to go out there and make plays for your team. I try to go out there and work hard every week and try to get better.” Do you feel more like a part of the club this way? “I always feel like I’m part of the club. I never felt like I wasn’t a part of the club. I wasn’t in a big role for the receiver corp, but when you lose a big guy like Plax, you have to step up and make plays. Hopefully, we can back out there next week and keep this roll going.” Page 6 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 DE Kimo von Oelhoffen Clark Haggans said that this defense bends, but it does not break. How true a statement is that? “This defense – actually this whole team – if you’ve watched every game closely, we get stronger at the end [of games]. That’s just the conditioning [and] the work we did all year [and with] the kind of guys in this room, we won’t ever break. We will get stronger. And I don’t think anybody can handle that for 60 minutes.” The defense was huge again, forcing turnovers. “The guys made plays. I rushed the quarterback, they are max-protecting and we’re coming up with the ball.” What about the job that James Harrison and Alonzo Jackson did stepping in for Clark Haggans? “They did a great job. There was no let up. Looking in their face, they couldn’t wait to play. The preparation that we have done is paying off.” LB Joey Porter How concerned are you that you had the Jets pinned inside their five yard-line twice and let them get out of it? “I’m not concerned, I just wanted to make those plays. I just feel that on those third down plays, we should get off the field when we put a team in that situation. We didn’t get off the filed, but at the same time we never let them get in the end zone. So even though we didn’t stop them like we wanted to when we had them pinned down there, we still only gave up two field goals.” When they run the West Coast offense with a rhythm passing game, do you have to give in to the the fact that you probably are not going to get to Pennington for sacks? “Yeah, he’s going to get the ball out as fast as possible. For the most part, he’s going to get the ball off pretty quick. That’s why he doesn’t have a lot of sacks. But at the same time, I felt like the pressure was okay. We hit him a few times and we never let him get in a rhythm where he can hurt you with that.” Is there any concern with coming off a physical game on Sunday night and having to play the same kind of game today? “No, that’s our make up. We’re physical guys. I feel like we’re physical team all the way around the board – offense, defense, special teams. I feel that their team is going to hurt more than our team is when all is said and done. That’s just the mentality that we have on this team.” Page 7 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 WR Hines Ward Talk about when Clark Haggans went out and James Harrison stepped in and did the job. “That’s been the case all year. It seems like everybody keeps waiting for us to have a let down game. But each week, a different guy is stepping up and making big plays. Once again, Jerome Bettis – he doesn’t get a chance to start – but he comes off the bench and contributes to the win. Really, he won the game by himself. The offensive line blocked well and our defense always puts us in there to win ball games. Like I said, that’s just been the case all year. We are going to continue to ride it that way. Maybe next week another guy is going to step up. It’s just a great feeling to be 12-1 right now.” Can you give a state of the team to this point, a summary of all you’ve accomplished this year? “To win 11 straight, it’s always hard. It’s not easy, especially in the NFL, but each week, we’ve got guys injured and guys keep stepping in and performing well. That’s just been the case with our whole team. There are no selfish guys on our team. It’s all about team. That’s the special thing about it.” LB James Farrior Does it feel good to make a big play against your former team? “Yeah, it definitely feels good and it feels even better just to get the win. They are a playoff-caliber team and we’ve got to get those kind of wins late in the season to help us get along with our journey.” Does the defense enjoy these grind-it-out kind of games? This is three in a row now, where the outcome has been placed on the shoulders of the defense. “These are hard-fought games and we know that sometimes it’s going to come down to good defensive play. That’s what we love. As a defense, those are the kinds of game that you want. And we thrive on that.” TE Jerame Tuman It looked like one of the keys to the halfback option touchdown pass was that Jerome Bettis sold it pretty well. “Yeah, definitely. It’s a play set up off a play that we’re very successful with – a running play [based on] the power game. They were ready for that play. We sucked them right up and I was able to get behind them.” How big of a lift was it when Jerome came in? He looked like he was really running hard. “He was running hard, but I think in the second half, as a unit, we really played a lot better. In the first half, we were in a funk, and it really felt like we couldn’t get anything going. We weren’t Page 8 of 9 Pittsburgh Steelers Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 making enough third downs to get in a rhythm. In the second half, I think we turned it around and got things going in the right direction.” Page 9 of 9 Coach Herman Edwards Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Coach Herman Edwards: As far as the injury situation goes we are okay. We are nicked up a little bit, but no one will miss anytime next week. As far as the game goes, it was a game that we turned the ball over too many times and we shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times. You can’t do that on the road especially against Pittsburgh. I thought in the second half we hung in there and we let them make the big plays on us. That is the nature of the game they make some big plays and then we have to try to come back and do the same. We weren’t able to do that. You are not going to win many games when you score six points on the road against a good team like this. This is one of the best teams in football. They play very well especially in the fourth quarter. They played better than us in the fourth quarter and that was the outcome of the game. They made the plays in the fourth quarter that it takes to win games. What do you have to do to score more points? We will figure it out this week. Can you talk about trick plays? They ran a half back pass. Sometimes they work. Can you talk about the performance of your defense? Overall, it was not good enough. We did not win. We did not win as coaches and we did not win as a team. We came here to win a game. What was the difference between the two teams today? They made a play. That is what good teams, championship teams do. They make plays in the fourth quarter when the game is tight. They were able to make plays and we were not. Did you prove today that you could play with a team like Pittsburgh? We did not come here to play good against the Steelers. We came here to win a football game, and we did not get it done. Beside the interceptions how is Chad Pennington doing? He is okay. He made some good throws. The last one got away from him a little high. On the out Troy Polamalu made a good play. When you turn the ball over three times and they turn the ball over twice at the end of the day along with the fouls hurt. We can not self-destruct like that. What happened on all the delay of games? Was that because of the crowd noise? Some of that was from the crowd noise. The crowd did a good job. Turnovers are very uncharacteristic of your ball club. Is it frustrating that your team turned it over so many times today? Yes. It is frustrating for all of us. We had twelve penalties in the first half. That is a lot of fouls. Page 1 of 2 Coach Herman Edwards Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 What happened on the Steelers big pass play? The guy ran a double-move on a slant-and-go and our corner did not recover in time. The quarterback made a great throw. The Steelers were not able to do much outside of the fourth quarter. Is that extra frustrating for you? We had a chance to win the game just like every week and we did not do it. They made the plays in the fourth quarter and we were not able to make any plays. Page 2 of 2 New York Jets Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 66 – Pete Kendall (G) How irritating is it that you had so many mistakes in the first half? It’s frustrating when you’re hurting your chances. Did the crowd noise make it difficult? I don’t think so. I don’t know about the delay [of game penalty]. How do you prepare for a team like the Steelers and how they run the ball a lot? Just like any other team. Practice Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, get on the plane and go play. It must be frustrating for you when you lose a game and you were in it most of the way. It’s frustrating when you lose a football game. That’s a no-brainer. This was a good football team that we came to play we knew that coming in, and we just couldn’t give ourselves enough opportunities. Is there any solace in getting a moral victory? No. Nobody cares about a moral victory in here. We’ve been down that road before. We wanted to win the game we didn’t win the game we’re disappointed we didn’t win the game we’re not going to fold our tents. We’re not going to pack our bags. We’re not going to quit on the season. 67 – Kareem McKenzie (T) What did the Steelers do to keep you out of the end zone? Basically, just play good football. This game could have gone either way. Did you feel that way throughout the game? You have to. You come out at halftime and the score was three to three. You get a chance to go out there and take the game away and keep it in our hands and make sure we don’t give it away and we didn’t do that today. Does this game change how you view yourselves? Not at all. We played the whole game. We didn’t play as well as we would have liked to have played, but were in it for sixty minutes. We’ll take a look at what we did wrong and come back next week. 51 – Jonathan Vilma (LB) Page 1 of 3 New York Jets Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Talk about giving up those two touchdowns. It was very disappointing we were in position to stop them, but we just didn’t do some of the things the coach to do that we’ve been doing all season. If looked like the running game kind of wore you guys down a bit in the second half. I don’t think so. I think that we were still in there in the thick of things, we just didn’t make the stops that we had to. Talk about the halfback pass. They had a couple of trick plays to keep us off balance, but we still should have played well. 10 – Chad Pennington (QB) Talk about this loss. What does it mean. It’s frustrating. I can only talk about myself and my performance. It wasn’t good enough. We’re only going to go as far as I take them. That’s how it works in the NFL; when the quarterback plays well, you have a chance to win, when the quarterback plays bad, you got a chance to lose. I’m better than what I played tonight. It’s a big challenge for me, but I’m looking forward to the next three weeks. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. Do you feel like you played good enough to win? No. Not really. Just errant throws and bad reads. It’s just not a good performance, not a winning performance. Not good enough for us to put my team in position to be successful. You take the interceptions you throw to heart. What is the difference today from other games this year? It’s frustrating, but I felt like after the first half, everything in the world happened to us, everything went wrong, and we were still in the game so I let that go. In the second half, we had really good drives. It was like last week in the first half, when you get down there, you’re got to score touchdowns, especially on the road. Just too many mental mistakes by myself and not enough winning football and that’s the bottom line. It always starts with me. I’m glad it does start with me because I can control that. Did you feel like you had a chance to win this game? Every game, no matter if you’re playing the worst team in the NFL or the best team in the NFL, you have a chance to win. That’s because of the talent level for each team and the parity. There are only a few plays that separate the 11-1 team from the 1-11 teams. It’s only a few plays; it’s not like college where there is a big disparity in talent level. That’s not the way it is. Getting close is not good enough. Every team comes close, and a lot of teams have come close to beating the Steelers. To their credit, they did a great job of making sure that they only came close, that they didn’t turn the tables and win the game. Page 2 of 3 New York Jets Postgame Quotes Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets ▪ Heinz Field ▪ Sunday, December 12, 2004 Were the first two interceptions due to bad reads? The first one, yeah I just did not judge his depth correctly. Polamalu made a great catch. And then the fabulous interception by Farrior on the second one, he read my eyes a little bit. How frustrating is this? Every loss is frustrating because every loss you always feel like the quarterback plays a major role and a major part in it. So every loss is frustrating, I don’t think that one is any more frustrating than the other. There’s no doubt that I’m disappointed in myself. Disappointed in how I played. We didn’t manage the game very well. I didn’t put my team in a good position to score some points. We take pride in that, it’s our job as an offense to score points. Two out of the four losses, we only scored six and seven, that’s disappointing for a quarterback. 28 – Curtis Martin (RB) What was it like for you with Bettis out there on the same field making history? I take my hat off to him. We got together after the game, I told him congratulations, he told me congratulations. He wanted to appreciate consistency, especially in this game, he’s definitely one that’s been able to accomplish that. Chad talked about mistakes he made that cost the team this game. Is he right? No. Chad being the quarterback and one of the leaders of this team, that’s just his character for him to do that. You win as a team, you lose as a team. There’s no one individual who you can point a finger at and say, ‘this is the reason why we lost’. We all make mistakes sometimes and we all don’t play our best games sometimes. That’s when other people have to step up and nobody stepped up and made up for the mistakes that we had today. Do you think you’ll be playing here again this season? Yes, I hope we do. I hope we come back here. We have to take the bad with the good. This isn’t just the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s my hometown team. I hate losing period, but I really hate losing to them. I would love to have a second chance. Page 3 of 3
