CAPTAIN’S CORNER
After being beaten on the Count Back last
Wednesday and pipped by one shot for the Medal
on Saturday I took counselling from the past
Captain whose advice was “you need to get to the
Pro Shop before they print the results!!!!”

This year we have Muirfield, Chatswood and
Bankstown in our Division. We play home and away
matches on 15, 22, 29 May, 5, 19 and 26 June.
If you are 50 and over on 15 May, a 6 or 7 Day
member, available for the above dates, and wish to
be considered for the team please give me a call.

Long Reef will be entering a team in both
competitions which are scheduled for later in the

FROM THE WOMEN
How much longer will we blessed with this weather?
Although I am sure the Greens staff would like
some rain.
The Grade team travelled to Randwick last Friday
for a match with Woolooware. Although it was a
very short course (11 par 3’s) we narrowly lost 3/2.
We must prefer our wide open spaces. The
competition is still very close with no standout team
to date.
Today we played Randwick at Cronulla Resulting
in a 3/2 win.

Slow Play
Again this has been an issue this week. I would
prefer not to raise this on a weekly basis, so please
do your best to keep up. RIGHT BEHIND THE
GROUP IN FRONT OF YOU. Tuesday saw those
hitting off at 7:30am - finishing at 12:30pm. This
makes the whole day incredibly slow for everyone
behind. We intend using a marshall in the next few
weeks to monitor closely and identify areas we
might improve.
Thank you to Pam Burke for the wonderful
initiative of the Swingers Ambrose tournament
played on Tuesday. Much appreciation to the
members who played alongside and supported these
new golfers. The new golfers were most impressive
–some great putting and they kept up the pace
really well

RULES WITH GEORGE
QUESTION : Fred and Kingsley were playing
together in a Stableford event. Fred had a one metre
putt and when it was his turn to putt he placed the
toe of his putter against the ball and lifted the ball
and cleaned it before replacing it and putting.
During the whole procedure he kept the putter in its
original position. Kingsley, Fred's marker, claimed
that Fred should be penalised for not marking his
ball correctly before lifting it. Which of the
following is correct?
a. Fred is penalised two strokes for not marking his
ball correctly.
b. Fred is disqualified for the hole and gains no
Stableford points for that hole.
c. Fred incurs no penalty.

SWINGERS
What a great way to celebrate International
Women's Day by playing a game of golf . A fun day
was had by all with our first 8 Hole Ambrose
competition . Our teams comprised of a member
and three swingers in a drop out Ambrose. A great
way for everyone to get to know one another. We
followed this with lunch in the clubhouse .

Russell who played with us today. And to Wendy
Millson and Peter Burke who donated prizes.

Winners Swingers 8 hole Ambrose

The hot dry weather continues and the dam is
quickly disappearing. There are some minor showers
predicted next week; hopefully we’ll at least get
something. We have been trying our best to keep
the course green but it is becoming a bigger battle
each week.
The new 18th public tee was completed last week;
the 2 small tees were turned into 1 larger tee. Turf
was laid last Friday and it has already had its 1st cut
this week. We are slowly inching closer to getting a
start on the new maintenance shed - hopefully in the
next few weeks.
Have a good weekend and let’s hope we get some
rain.

Goulburn v Long Reef
The weekend of April 16 and 17 will see our friends
from Goulburn at the club for their annual visit.
The "main" game is on Sunday 17th and all 5,6 and
7 day members are encouraged to take part.
A breakfast is followed by the golf with dinner to
conclude a great day, with Long Reef hopefully
turning the tables from last year.
Starting sheets are at the kiosk.
SICK BAY
Eric Morcombe was recently admitted to the San,
where he’s doing well. He expects to be home
soon.
APPROVAL AND CONSTRUCTION
OF THE NEW MAINTENANCE
FACILITY
HAPPY TRAVELLERS
Further to the advice in the Newsletter on
26th February 2016, I have pleasure in extending an
invitation to attend the Members Forum to be held
on Monday 14th March, commencing at 6pm in the
Pacific Room.
The purpose of the meeting is to bring Members up
to date with the recent approval by Warringah
Council of the Maintenance facility, the
commencement of work on the facility and the
interruptions to the course that will coincide with
the construction work.
In addition we will discuss the stormwater and
wetlands works that will follow after the demolition
of the existing Maintenance Shed is finalised.
I look forward to seeing you on the 14th March.

FRIDAY CLUB
Last week 12 Long Reef ‘golf tragics’ ventured south
to play Huntingdale, Victoria, Metropolitan and
Kingston Heath golf courses.
With perfect weather, lightening fast greens and
magnificently manicured fairways the group
attempted to master some of Melbourne’s finest
sand belt courses. The abundance of bunkers on all
4 courses scarred most (“we will never complain
about Long Reef’s bunkers again”) and fast greens
gave others the yips.
Suffice it to say that respectable scores were hard to
come by although Paul Harrison (the overall winner)
and Michael Buckley (runner up) played some
consistent and steady golf throughout the week to
take overall honours. Others achieved notoriety on
the 19th!

This week we played in two grades which gave
opportunity to new kids. Patrick Ell had his first win
and has shown great improvement since joining the
club.

Long Reef vs St Michaels at St Michaels.
Another early morning start saw the team travelling
across the Harbour Bridge to St Michaels Golf Club.
St Michaels is located on the coast between NSW
Golf Course and The Coast Golf Course.
Course designers Glancey and Moran
(1938) had vision of designing a ‘tough
championship links course, without disturbing the
natural terrain.’ They thoroughly succeeded with at
least 5 blind tee shots.
Note to self; Glancey and Moran must have owned shares in
a golf ball manufacturing business.
The team order changed this week as Dylan Perry
was given a leave pass to attend his 21st birthday
party. As a result Tom Bateman took on the No.1
spot and consequently played current Australian
Amateur Runner Up, Travis Smyth. Tom got away
to a great start by winning the first hole. The players
then proceeded to win alternate holes with birdies.
Travis got the upper hand on the 6th hole by beating
Tom’s birdie with an impressive eagle. Not beaten
and wanting to leave his ‘mark’ on the tough St
Michaels layout, Tom pushed his tee shot 270m up
the hill on the short par 4 ninth hole into the huge
clubhouse windows facing the Pacific Ocean.
Nothing broke and he managed to take a free drop
under Rule 24-2. His next shot left him a three
metre putt for birdie. He missed the putt and Travis
went on to record a 5/4 win. A great effort by Tom
though.
Mark Cruise and Matt Saad playing 2 and 3
respectively, both lost by the same margin 4/3.
Local knowledge plays a big part in matches at this
course and both or our players got caught out on
more than one occasion. Anthony Stockini couldn’t
find his recent good form and too often he was
‘disturbing the natural terrain’. His match finished
on the 13th hole, 6/5.
It was the bottom of the order that stood out this
week. Jake Schmidt managed to navigate his way
around the course without the assistance of his usual
caddie, Jimmy Knox. His match went to the last
hole all square. After finding just about every
fairway, Jake’s tee shot went left and he needed to
chip out and get up and down for the half. It wasn’t
to be and he lost 1 down.
It was a battle of the up and coming future
professionals as Billy Watson took on Harrison
Crowe. Both of these guys have a huge amount of
talent. After watching a few holes it was clear that
Billy had a better temperament and kept his cool to
go on and record a well-deserved win 2/1.
Note to team; Dummy spitting is for 2 year olds!
Long Reef Major Pennant debutant, Mark Taylor
put on a great performance and got away to a
magnificent start. ‘Experience’ was winning over
‘youth’ and went into the back nine 4 up, Mark held
onto his lead and recorded a solid win 3/2. Well
done Mark!
Matt Hunter rounded out the day with a match
against St Michaels reserve player. In typical fashion
Matt played the course as he saw it, not necessarily
as it was designed. He put on a great show even
though he went on to lose the match.
Thank you to the caddies and supporters (Les and
Paul) that came out to the match. We have one
match to play and we need a win to guarantee our
place in Division 1 for next year.
We are at home on Sunday and hope to see you all
there supporting our team. 7:00am start.

Women’s Grade Round 3
It was an early start to get to Cronulla to hit off at
8.00am but it was worthwhile. The team defeated
Randwick 3/2 with the last round to go. Next week
they play Cronulla at Muirfield and woulk like a
good win. Cronulla are the current leaders, but
they’re not unbeatable!

RULES WITH GEORGE
ANSWER: c is correct. The Note to Rule 20-1
provides that "the position of a ball to be
lifted should be marked by placing a ball-marker, a
small coin or other similar object immediately
behind the ball". The provision in the Note is a
recommendation of best practice, but there is no
penalty for failing to act in accordance with the
Note.( Decision 20-1/16 applies).
The Decision sets out four alternative methods of
marking the ball that are not recommended but are
permissible. These include using the toe of a putter,
a tee, a loose impediment or scratching a line. A
player may not mark the position of a ball with
reference to a blemish or spot on the green.
