The Italian American Community Center will host the Festa Della Repubblica on
Tuesday, June 2, 2015 with a ceremony at
5:30pm. The event is sponsored by Mario
Daniele, Honorary Vice Consul of Italy.
Coffee and dessert will follow the ceremony. Show your support of our Italian
heritage and let your Italian colors shine
at this community friendly event.
The Festa della Repubblica Italiana
is celebrated every June 2 to commemorate the birth of the Italian Republic. On
June 2 and 3 1946, following the fall of
Fascism and the end of World War II,
an institutional referendum was held in
which Italians were asked to vote on what
form of government they preferred, either
a monarchy or republic. The majority of
Italians favored a republic, so the monarchs of the House of Savoy were exiled.
On May 27, 1949, lawmakers passed
Article 260, cited June 2 as data di fondazione della Repubblica (date of the
founding of the Republic) and declared it
a national holiday.
Like many other Italian holidays, the
Festa della Repubblica Italiana has a tradition of symbolic events. Currently, the
celebration includes the laying of a wreath
at the alter of the Unknown Soldier, Altare
della Patria, and a military parade in central Rome, presided over by the President
of the Italian Republic in his role as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.
The Prime Minister, formally known as
the President of the Council of Ministers,
and other high officers of state also attend.
One of the highlights of the day is the
flyover by the Frecce
Tricolori. Officially
known as the Pattuglia
NON-PROFIT

Membership News
Message from the President
Dear Members, if progress can be
measured by
achievements,
then looking at
where we are
coming from
and where we
are today, one
must assume
that the IACC
Joe Sirianni
has made significant steps
to measure up
on the scale of achieving the goals that
will make the organization better and
more transparent. Many factors are necessary requirements to make the engine run
similar to a car or any other motorized
equipment, such as and not limited to the
fuel that makes the engine run. In our case,
first and foremost are the membership, the
clients, the benefactors, the staff, the board
members and its leadership.
We, the board, assumed the responsibility to guide the organization at a time
when it was in need of help. Many difficult
decisions needed to be made, and much
work was required to be done. The secret
to success depends mostly on a business
plan that addresses the short term needs as
well as the long term ones. Many factors
are vital, such as the location of the business, the reputation that the business has
achieved, the ownership, and the public
perception of it.
The IACC has been fortunate to have
at its helm Board members who hold the
organization as a priority. There are others
who claim to have left the IACC in good
financial condition, but the truth is that it
was not the case. An important factor in
life is if an individual claims to have been
the savior and boasts about it, is similar to
the bird that looks at himself in the mirror
and claims to be beautiful. Let others be
the judges of the achievements made as
an organization and not as an individual.
The IACC in on its way to prosperity
and new visions. Villa Capri will soon
be the housing of circa 160 plus tenants.
The Padre Pio Chapel will be visited by
many people and the IACC campus will
soon be the talk of the town because of
its accomplishments, not only in Gates,
but also in the city of Rochester and in
the neighboring towns.
Phyllis Glover has been hired as the
new Food and Beverage Manager, do to
the fact that Errico Mannoni has been
promoted to IACC Marketing Director
in order to garner more business for our
Community Center. New memberships
are forthcoming and more interest will
be generated by promoting more cultural
events, and other programs that will attract a new generation. We are optimistic
that our future is bright and that we will
be recognized as one of the better member
organizations in New York State.
July will be a busy month for us as we
will have our annual Festa Italiana on
July 16, 17, 18. We invite all of you to
participate, to taste the many foods that
are the Italian tradition, to listen to Italian
and American music, and in general have
a great time with your loved ones and the
many acquaintances that you will meet
and reunite with. See you there!!!

1965 by Father Sbrocco at St. Claire

Gene Ferrari "Love Fest" at the IACC
Deborah Ford and Joe Sirianni
On Sunday, May 3, 2015, "Vegas
Forever" starring Gene Ferrari rolled
into the IACC. The concert was held
with much anticipation from his loyal
fan base. Attendance was large with
guests from as far as Pennsylvania,
an indication of Gene's popularity
and appeal.
After a 5:00pm hors d'oeuvres reception, the guests entered the Grand
Ballroom for a delicious family-style
dinner of Chicken Saltimbocca, Pork
Tenderloin, with traditional pasta and
delicious sides, before settling down
for the show.
The "Vegas-style" concert lived up
to its expectations due to Gene's talent,
personality, and humor. He bantered
with the audience, exchanging good
humored teasing and excited the
crowd with his imitations of classic
performers such as Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck, and in particular
a splendid rendition of "Coming to
America" by Neil Diamond.
After the show, many lingered at
the Center with Mr. Ferrarri, to shake
his hand, hug, laugh, compliment and
reminisce on days gone by with him.
With the success of this show still
fresh, another Gene Ferrari concert is
tentively scheduled for November 8,
2015. Old fans will be pleased and new
fans are welcome. Save the date for
another special "Vegas-style" event.

Cultural Committee Update
Rosalba Pisaturo
The Culture Committee is working
very hard at implementing new educational and cultural programs. With the
assistance of teachers of Italian in the
Rochester area schools, we are planning
to sponsor more programs for a younger
audience. The well known and successful 'Ballo Divertentissimo' is scheduled
for the coming fall. Two classes of Italian have successfully been completed
with the new instructors Marisa Vattana
and Daniela Varone. The students have
already given very positive evaluations
and have asked to continue with the next
level of the language later in the summer.
Meanwhile, they have formed an independent group to meet weekly for informal
conversation in Italian. The Italian Cinema Nights are very well attended and
we are grateful to Frank Lanzafame for
continuing to assist in showing monthly
a good selection of Italian movies. The
food drive we held in March to benefit
Foodlink collected 150 pounds of foods
items, many thanks go to all who dropped
off items throughout the month. The exhibit of Gaetano Scollo's photographs and
the book signing of his latest publication
'Trazzera' generated profit which will be
donated to the Mary Cariola's Children
Center. The 18th Annual Women of the
Year Awards were given to four ladies
who have distinguished themselves
in many different categories. We congratulate Linda Gruttadauria, Stephanie
A. Squicciarini, Dorothy R. Pecoraro,
and Arline Liberti for their outstanding
contributions to our community. With
an attendance of 150 guests, the Award
Ceremony event on May 22nd. was a
memorable one. Let's continue with the
good work. Proud to be Italian!
Congratulations to Alexander!

Sebastiano Vassalli,
dell’Università di Göteborg legata all'Accademia
Antonia. E così ho fatto.

nuova edizione BUR Rizzoli)

The Lyric Theatre
Rochester’s First True Opera House
Rosalba Pisaturo
April 8, 2015 will be an unforgettable
day in the music history of Rochester. Susan Cotroneo, managing director of Rochester Lyric Opera and Fine Arts Award
recipient of the 2013 IACC Women of the
Year Award, announced that the historic
building on 440 East Avenue, formerly
owned by the First Church of Christ, Scientist, will now be the first theater owned
by an opera company in Rochester.
Rochester has certainly had opera productions in the past; but whether homegrown, brought from New York, or given
by European touring companies, none had
a theater which was its local home. “Many
opera companies have come and gone in
Rochester. I believe if they had a home
they may have survived,” said Cotroneo.
“This theatre will be our home, and it will
be available for other performers, even
national acts.”
Rochester Lyric Opera made this vision
come true with the hard work of its team
over several years. Now this beautiful
building with exceptional acoustics will
be a “house of worship” for all of music from opera to jazz, chamber music,
and recitals, and a gathering place for
everybody who loves music. The Opera
Guild of Rochester is proud to be part of
the users and supporters of this magnificent building that rivals European opera
houses and concert venues and will enrich
Rochester’s cultural life. We call on all
the people in Rochester and beyond to
join us in support of this jewel, where
we can find joy and peace listening to
music. Rochester Lyric Opera has already
scheduled some events for the building,
including an August 28 presentation of
Mozart’s The Impresario. The Xerox
Rochester International Jazz Festival
will use the venue for five shows June 21
through June 25.
The Jazz Fest’ co-producers, John
Nugent and Marc Iacona, will manage
the new venue. “Once the building is
renovated, I will program a year-round
series of shows,” Nugent said, estimating
50 to 60 each year.
The Lyric Theatre also will be a venue
for September’s First Niagara Fringe
Festival.

del programma radiofonico “La Bella
Italia”. E’ condotto
dall’autore, produttore e discografico
Mario Marasco
Pubblicato da Redazione NEWS
FUORI REGIONE 15 marzo 2015
Televisivo n.10) a Ciao Radio (790 AM
e 530 AM), a CHIN Radio International
-1430 AM (Stazione Radio Cinese), sino
a. programma di gran successo trasmesso
da “Voces Latinas” (La voce della comunità) – CHHA 1610 AM – con “La Bella
Italia – Notturno italiano – “La Radio
produttore discografico, nonchè come
titolare e direttore artistico della casa
discografica Riviera Music Publishing
e delle Edizioni Musicali Riomar Music
Publishing & Schermo che, tra l’altro,
hanno diffuso diversi singoli ed album,
co-prodotto le colonne sonore di alcuni
film (“Amore a due ruote”, “Il padrone
dei ragni” e “Il vescovo Rosaz”) e, in
sub-edizione, stampato canzoni di autori
italiani, canadesi, argentini, spagnoli, ecc.
come musicisti professionisti). Mario ha
iniziato come poeta-autore, vincendo da
ragazzino un concorso poetico a Messina
con “Amor di mamma” (dedicata appunto
alla mamma Giuseppina, morta nel 1950),
inserita, come altre sue tante liriche,
nell’antologia “L’anima del poeta ’95″).
Come giornalista ho conosciuto personalmente “questo eccezionale personaggio”
oltre trent’anni fa e poi l’ho rincontrato
in Calabria (è nato a Decollatura, vissuto
per alcuni anni a Locri e poi in Piemonte,
prima del suo definitivo trasferimento in
terra canadese ove all’inizio continuò il
8
lavoro di decoratore iniziato a Torino). Sin
abbiamo già parlato in queste pagine.
nascosta. E la mette in evidenza anche
nella sua canzone di grande successo
dedicata all’Italia, “Terrà lontana”, che

Family Trees vs
DNA Testing
I usually encourage genealogy researchers to share their family trees online, in order to make connections with
others who may be researching similar
information. Some folks are hestitant to
do so, often because of privacy issues,
but even more often because it strikes a
sour note for them to have worked hard
and long to develop and verify all the
records, collect images of documents,
photos, family stories, etc, and then to
post all that on-line, for others to simply
copy and use.
I argue that most folks develop a family tree not only to find ancestors, but
where possible to identify living relatives
who have some of the same ancestors; to
broaden their own and others’ knowledge
of blood relations. Posting a tree on-line
can attract others who are researching
the same surnames and towns, and correspondence between you and them may
benefit both parties.
To those who complain that others
may take ‘your tree’ and incorrectly use
it to show spurious or undocumented,
unsourced information, I say “You can
keep your tree accurate and documented.
If someone else uses your information
and mistakenly adds something to their
tree, that’s their problem, and does not
reflect on you.” Such concerns, I believe,
are minor when compared to the great
gains that can be made when you find a
distant cousin who has dozens of welldocumented folks in his tree, who are
your previously unknown relatives, and
you have ‘connected’ because he or she
saw your family tree on-line.
That being said, why, then, do I hestiate
to upload my tree to a DNA testing site?
Simple skepticism. I do have a family
tree on-line, atr www.rootsweb.com, not
connected to any DNA testing site. And
after contacting someone identified as
a relative by 23andMe or GEDmatch, I
have no problem exchanging my off-line
genealogical database or my on-line rootsweb information with that person. This
lets us compare names and dates that we
ourselves have researched, and possibly
find relatives or common ancestors who
we didn’t already know about.
But I resist having the information I
found merged on a DNA site into some
‘world tree’ that can contain errors, or
at best unsourced and uncorroborated
information. Add to that my concern that
the software which analyzes my genome
could conceivably, by ‘circular reasoning’, access my ‘tree’ and then report
results ‘confirming’ the information in
the tree, when really, it’s information that
I myself entered. Maybe I’m too much
of a ‘doubter’, but I’d rather separate the
DNA analyses from the ‘paper genealogy’, and infer connections only after I
have considered each separately.
In summarizing the topic of DNA
testing, I feel that the $100 I paid to have
my genetic material (saliva) tested by
23andMe was money well spent, even
though it has not yet allowed me to identify a relative who has more information
about my ancestry than I’ve already
accumulated. It has introduced me to
several ‘2nd to 6th cousins’ who share
‘significant’ portions of their genome
(biological ‘blueprint’) with me, as well
as an already known great-grandniece
whose many DNA matches with mine
conirm that relationship. We all are making strides to connect our ‘paper genealogies’, a feat that will hopefully identify
common ancestors and enlarge that group
of souls, living and deceased, that make
up our combined families.
I would recommend genealogical DNA
testing for anyone who has more than a
passing interest in their genealogy and
‘personal ancestry’. With the proper approach to it (recognizing its capabilities
and limitations) you can expand the broad
knowledge of your roots, and combined
with conventional research, it can even
put leaves on those elusive branches of
the ‘tree’ of your direct ancestors.

Giorgio Armani
Celebrates 40 Years
in Fashion
Armani and actor Leonardo Di Caprio
Iconic Italian designer Giorgio Armani
celebrated forty years in fashion April
30th, 2015. His party was a star-studded
gala and opening of a museum dedicated
to his designer business. The 80-year old
designer was joined by celebrities, such
as Tom Cruise, Leonardo Di Caprio, Cate
Blanchett, Janet Jackson, Hilary Swank
and Tina Turner for the bash in Milan,
Italy at the headquarters of his fashion empire. Armani's is known for his clean-cut
and elegant style. His gowns have graced
a number of Red Carpet events around
the world. Nicknamed King Giorgio, the
designer, who once worked as a window
dresser, is known for being hands-on
in creating one of the most recognized
fashion brands in the world. “There have
been many moments, from the beginning
until today,” Armani told reporters upon
arrival at the Jennifer Niejadlik
gala on Thursday evening.
“Maybe, my most emotional moment was
when I saw my cover on Time,” he added,
referring to the magazine. Armani, who
designs both couture and ready-to-wear,
has dressed celebrities, royals as well as
sportsmen. Stars, such as Beyonce, David
Beckham and Megan Fox have modeled
his perfumes and underwear. “Madison
Avenue in 1985, I think it was, so not very
long after he came to our country and I
have a closetful still of those beautiful
suits, those classic suits, and I still wear
them,” actor Glenn Close reminisced
about when she bought her first Armani
piece. James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan
paid a tribute to the stylist, calling him ‘a
mighty man’, while Italian star Sophia
Loren simply said the designer “is her
friend". For the anniversary, Armani converted a 1950's building that once stored
cereals for a new exhibition dedicated of
his designs. The event took place ahead
of the Friday May 1st, 2015 opening of
Milan Expo, of which Armani is special
ambassador for fashion. Officials expect
nearly 20 million people to visit over the
next six-months the exhibition of worldwide products and technologies. During
the celebrations Armani also opened up
about his latest project, an autobiography,
which is set to be published by Rizzoli
during Milan Fashion Week in September
2015. He said: ''I wanted to share personal
thoughts and moments, the ones that I
choose to share - there are others nobody
will ever pull out of me.''

Remembering
Mario Cuomo
President William Clinton wrote the
obituary in Time Magazine which gave
Cuomo the full page. An excerpt: “Mario
Cuomo’s America of community, compassion and responsibility will live as long as
there are people who believe in it strongly
as he did, who define our success by the
chances we give others who have dreams
and the determination to chase them.”
America has lost a fine man of integrity, honesty and compassion. We shall
miss him
born to immigrant parents, Mario paired
his faith in God and faith in America to
live a life of public service—and we are
all better for it. He rose from chief executive of the state he loved, determined
champion of progressive values, and an
unflinching voice for tolerance, inclusiveness, fairness, dignity, and opportunity.
His own story taught us that as Americans,
we are bound together as one people, and
our country’s success rests on the success
of all of us, not just a fortunate few.”
Mary Amabile Palmer
Mario Cuomo
A beloved gentleman, Mario Cuomo
was Governor of New York for three
terms from 1983 to 1994. Prior he was
Lieutenant Governor of New York from
1979 to 1982 and Secretary of State
of New York from 1975 to 1978. A
staunch Democrat, he was particularly
remembered for his keynote speech at
the Democratic National Convention in
1984 where he dazzled the audience and
jumped into national prominence such
that he was widely considered a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for
President in 1988 and 1992. He declined.
Cuomo’s son, Andrew, became Governor
of New York as well.
Cuomo was born in New York City. His
father, Andrea Cuomo, and his mother,
Ommaculata, were born in Italy. He
graduated tied for first in his class of 1956
from St. John’s University School of Law.
At the same time, he was a Professor at
St. John’s Law School. In 1972, Mayor
John Lindsay appointed him to conduct
an inquiry of a dispute over low-income
public housing for the middle-class neighborhood of Forest Hills.
When Walter Mondale ran for President in 1984, Cuomo was on Mondale’s
list of Vice-Presidential candidates. While
Geraldine Ferraro was ultimately chosen,
Cuomo was chosen to give the keynote
speech.
In Cuomo’s first term as Governor,
the budget was balanced, providing him
the state’s highest credit rating it had in
a decade. In his second term, sweeping
fiscal reforms were enacted. He succeeded
in his effort to rebuild bridges and roads,
increased assistance to law enforcement
agencies, was the first in the nation to
enact the seat belt laws.
Cuomo authored several books, “Forest Hills Diary: The Crisis of Low-Income
Housing,” “Reason to believe” about his
parents’ struggles when they came to
America but in the end prospered, and
"Why Lincoln Matters.” In 1983, Barnard College awarded Cuomo its highest
honor, the Barnard Medal of Distinction.
Cuomo was married to Matilda Raffa
for 60 years. She graduated from St.
John’s University Teacher’s College.
They have five children. In addition
to Andrew, Mario and Matilda have 4
other children, Chris, Maria, Margaret
and Madeline. All are fine, upstanding
and successful young people.
