On The Move A Monthly Publication of the Southside Senior & Community Center Vol. XXXVII, No. 5 Getting Better Every Day May Luncheon Civic Theater Benefit Performance Tiptoe thru the Tulips May 17 / Noon-1:30 $10 members / $12 non-members The Pages of Harmony Quartet will entertain us. There will be Gift Card Giveaways, a 50/50 raffle and a specialty cocktail - a Tiptoe Red Berry Wine Spritzer. In addition, because May is "Better Speech & Hearing Month" Zounds Hearing will have a table distributing information on the latest hearing devices and solutions. CapTel will demonstrate their captioned phones which allow people to read captions of everything their caller says. They will also have applications for a CapTel machine and free service. Stop by both and educate yourself about what's available to make your life more enjoyable. May 2016 Join us for the smashing musical, Guys and Dolls, at Spokane Civic Theater on Wednesday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. Be totally entertained by fabulous dancing and classic songs like “Bushel and a Peck,” “Luck Be a Lady,” “If I Were A Bell,” and “I’ve Never Been in Love Before” and enjoy lots of laughs. Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is a high-energy romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend, Adelaide, laments that they've been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, but Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong. Proceeds from this benefit performance will support the Southside Center. Invite your friends, neighbors and relations to join you for this fun evening. $30 tickets are available now at the front desk. Save the Dates! 2016 - Coming Attractions Guys & Dolls Benefit ....... We made nearly $5,000! The member's-only preview was well attended, and it was good to see so many of you shopping and visiting. The best thing about the garage sale for me is that so many of you use it as an opportunity to volunteer and have a good time working with other members. This month we will recognize our many volunteers at the Tuesday luncheon on April 19. Please join us we celebrate the thousands of hours you give to make the Center a better place. I have been on the board for three years now, and there have been a number of people who have made a huge impression on me with all they do for the Center. I'd like to give them special recognition: so here's to the Teal Ladies, Carol Gabel, Mic Cochran and Kristin Watson. My heartfelt thanks to all of you volunteers, and I'm so glad to count many of you as new friends. ~Jeff Olson, Board of Directors Chairman Thanks! You’re Awesome! The exceptional success of the April 2 garage sale is a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of Southside Senior & Community Center volunteers. Thanks to each and every one for your time, energy and support. The Center’s operation budget is a few dollars short of $5,000 richer because of your tireless support and hard work. The largest passenger ship ever build, it was hailed as unsinkable. After stops in Cherbourg, France and Queenstown, Ireland the ship set sail for New York with 2,240 souls on board. Four days out, at about 11:30pm on April 14 th, a lookout saw an iceberg dead ahead. The warning bell was rung and the bridge notified. Titanic’s engines were put in reverse and evasive actions were taken. The massive ship was slow to turn and only managed to miss direct head on contact, instead the iceberg scraped down the starboard side cutting a 300 ft. long gash in the hull, well below the waterline. As we all know, approximately three hours later the Titanic slipped below the surface, coming to rest on the ocean floor. Of the 2,240 passengers and crew on board only 705 survived. Southside Senior & Community Center is not the Titanic or even on its maiden voyage, so how does this apply to us? It’s really very simple, we need every member’s help to keep us afloat. No one person or small group of folks can prevent the center from sinking underwater. Over the last few months the attendance at our events, rentals, programs and travel are up and I thank those involved for that. But more is needed! I’m asking all members and our south hill community too, to pick up the newsletter and join us at the center. There’s something for everyone. Please be a part of the success of your center! ~ Gary Turner, Executive Director Free Notary Services for Members Another benefit of being a member of the Southside Center. Wii Bowling on Fridays! 1:30—3 p.m. If you heard whooping and hollering and laughing on Friday afternoon, you were hearing Wii bowling players having fun in their virtual bowling alley. They would love you to join them. How Does it Work? Aug. 13-14 — Call for Artists & Crafters An arts and crafts fair—the Southside Artisan Market will be held Aug. 13-14 at the Southside Senior & Community Center in the air conditioned ballroom. Anyone can do it! Here’s how it works. It involves a “bowling alley” shown on a screen. Instead of a heavy bowling ball, players hold a Wii remote control (about the size and weight of your TV control), swing it back and then forward as if rolling a bowling ball. The virtual ball rolls down the alley on the screen and pins fall. It even keeps score for you. For this juried event, artisans and crafters with unique and highquality hand-made wares are encouraged to take part in the market and sign up to display and sell their work. Fees for the weekend are $35 for a 10x10-foot space or a 6x10foot space with a table provided. Fees after July 15 will be $50. Email Jeff Olson at [email protected] or call (509) 291-6411 for an application and market guidelines. Wanted: Players & Volunteers Scrabble Players – call Denia to sign up. The ride along the scenic Pend Oreille River from Ione to Metaline Falls has been a regional favorite in the autumn for 35 years. Part of the rail line used by the Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club for the ride won’t be maintained by its owner, the Port of Pend Oreille, after that time. The Lion’s Club train ride began in 1981, carrying 60 passengers. Now more than 10,000 people ride the train each fall, taking in views of the river and fall foliage.
