One hundred seventy-five artists, 53 of whom are new to DeLand this year, will be exhibiting on Woodland Boulevard Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21-22. Whatever your particular preference in art might be, you will find something to pique your interest: sculpture in bronze, wood and glass, oil, acrylic and watercolor, printmaking, photography, fiber, jewelry — these will all be wonderfully represented. While you are here, take advantage of MainStreet DeLand’s excellent restaurants and shops. Take a break, and sip a glass of fine wine or a craft beer at one of our many beverage purveyors. There’s always an array of live music at the Festival and afterward at a number of venues around town. If you are a poetry lover, or even if you think you are not, join us at Persimmon Hollow at 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, for the Women of the World Poetry Slam Qualifier. This is a new event for the Festival. You will be treated to a great evening of spoken-word and open-mic entertainment that you will long remember. The Festival, in cooperation with the MAC DeLand committee of the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce, will also be presenting the second annual Off the Beaten Path Studio Arts Tour, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Seventeen artist studios will be open to the public. This is a rare opportunity to meet artists where they create. You can find more information at www. macdeland.com. The success of each DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts takes the involvement of a very large number of very committed volunteers. I want to thank the board and committee members of the Festival, as well as those who importantly volunteer their time during the Festival weekend. I would also like to thank the City of DeLand and Volusia County for their support and our enthusiastic patrons and sponsors for their commitment to the cultural vibrancy of our community. And, of course, I would like to thank our presenting partners: the Athens Theatre, MainStreet DeLand Association and the Museum of Art - DeLand. DeLand is a special place. We hope that you enjoy your time with us and come back often. There’s always something going on in DeLand. — Judy Thompson, president DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts “Experience Matters” Sue Turnbull Realtor, GRI, SFR, CDPE Your DeLand Realtor Email: [email protected] www.swannandassociates.com Beacon FFOA 2015 Beacon FFOA 2015 Cell: 386-748-6074 5 P 4 O 0 U 2 N E D S O L IN 40 DAYS S * Lose the FAT where you WANT, and learn to keep it off! This year, the group didn’t have to look far for a shining example of artistic talent. Edgewater resident and Coronado Beach Elementary School art teacher Steve Hardock is this year’s featured artist. His watercolor painting of the Volusia County Historic Courthouse in Downtown DeLand captivated festival organizers, along with a sizable crowd at its September reveal. Hardock is an award-winning artist who has created murals at several facilities within Volusia County, including at Mainland High School and the Museum of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach. The themes of his works span a wide range, from landscape and architecture to animals, religious figures and even fantasy-themed paintings. Bobbi Baugh, an artist and organizer of the festival, praised Hardock’s work and said it generated quite the buzz among the public. “I just have to tell you, when we had our unveiling in September, I have never seen response to the work as enthusiastic as that,” she said. The vibrant painting is of an iconic, towering Downtown DeLand landmark, widely recognized and loved by West Volusia residents and frequent visitors to the area. “Steve is a very accomplished artist,” said Baugh. Hardock has a degree in art and biology from Cumberland College, along with a master’s degree from Nova University. He also attended The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale to study commercial art. And while there are certainly many lovers of the arts in West Volusia willing to spend dollars to get a piece of fine culture without any encouragement, the presence of so many patrons of the arts at the festival is no accident. The DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts runs a Patron-Collector Membership program. The program requires people to pledge at least $350 toward the festival. The group retains $100 of the donation in order to help underwrite the operation of the festival, but $250 gets returned to the patron in a “store credit” of sorts. As encouragement to pick up a piece of art for his or her own enjoyment, the patron receives $250 to spend with any of the juried artists at the show. Joan Cornett, who has been managing the patron program for the past five years, said not only does that benefit help draw more people to become patrons, but it draws more artists who know there are people willing to buy the art they’re showcasing. “The purpose of the program is to get patrons to join the patron program at $350. They get then $250 to spend at the festival. The purpose of it is to show the artist that we have a large number of people who will buy at the festival,” Cornett said. The festival owners and the Museum of Art hold a variety of social, educational and cultural events for the patrons throughout the year, as well. “We have some educational events at the museum, and we have some social events throughout the year. So, they get a lot for their $100 that they end up contributing,” said Cornett. “It’s very popular. People enjoy the camaraderie.” Bobbi Baugh said the program is vital to attract quality artists to DeLand. “When we organize the festival, it’s important to look at it from the standpoint of our artist eyes,” she said. “In every way, it’s good for DeLand to attract top-quality artists to our show. It’s better for the people who go shopping; it’s better for the festival; it’s better for the image of DeLand,” Baugh continued. “The way you do that is to do things that are important for the artist.” The festival also offers amenities to artists, like booth-sitters and a sizable awards program. “Artists have other places they could go. On this weekend, there are at least a half-dozen other festivals they could have gone to throughout the state, but they came here,” said Baugh. Through the patron program alone, Cornett said, there will be more than $26,000 for buying art circulating at the festival. That’s in addition to any money from sponsors and what non-patron visitors may spend at the festival. Those interested in participating in the program can contact Cornett via email at [email protected]. More than 1,200 pieces of student art from children and teens from around Volusia County will be on display during the festival, in the grandiose rotunda of the Thomas C. Kelly County Administration Center on West Indiana Avenue. Works from aspiring artists will be showcased throughout the exhibition, on display in the public hall for thousands to see. Also in the administration center, free hands-on activities including face painting, youth games, and opportunities for kids to create their own artwork will be offered, as well. The events are all free, and those who participate can keep what they create. “The Youth Art Exhibit is not just for friends and families of the art students,” said Paula Tigges, chairwoman of the exhibit. “Stop in the rotunda, and see what the next generation of artists is creating. Their thoughts and expressions are reflected in their work, and the artwork is as varied in media and technique as the professional artists in the Fall Festival of the Arts.” Much like the professional art at the festival is juried by professional artists, the work at the Youth Art Exhibit is juried by art teachers from around the county. “The art teachers in West Volusia not only teach and inspire their art students,” said Tigges. “They also are the jurors for the exhibit, and volunteer their time to bring the artwork and create a visually impressive display.” The exhibit features awards for a Best in Show piece; and Premier, Excellence and HonoraryAwards each for kindergarten through grade five, grades six through eight, and grades nine through 12. The 13 awards total $1,500, and are from the Fall Festival of the Arts. These awards go to individual students and their teachers. Every student who is in the exhibit receives a certificate of achievement and a ribbon. Teachers select the pieces for the festival from the works of all of their art students at their school. It is a high recognition to be a participating student with art in the exhibit, Tigges said. She said the majority of the students’ artwork was created during this past school year, with the exception of some high-school students, who may have worked with the same art teacher for a couple of semesters. Some students sometimes work on a single piece extensively for an extended period of time. The artwork reflects the teachers’ CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 OUR 35TH YEAR!
