Dear Friends,
Welcome to Monty Python’s Spamalot, which I am pleased to be producing for the first time at
Pittsburgh CLO. We participated in bringing this new musical to Broadway, where it debuted in
2005 and was nominated for 14 Tony Awards®, winning three: Best Musical, Best Direction of a
Musical (Mike Nichols), and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Sara Ramirez).
A year later, it also won the “coconut orchestra” world record of people clapping halved coconut
shells in New York’s Shubert Alley, which, while recognized by the Guinness Book of World
Records, was eventually bested by more than twice the number of coconut clappers in London’s
Trafalgar Square.
Did I mention it’s a comedy?
Like the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” from which it is adapted, Spamalot is a
cheeky sendup of the tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and their search
for the Holy Grail. (The musical’s title comes from a line in the movie: “We eat ham, and jam,
and Spam a lot.”) Eric Idle wrote the book and lyrics and collaborated with John Du Prez on
the majority of the music in the show, whose original Broadway cast included Tim Curry, David
Hyde Pierce, Sara Ramirez, Christian Borle and Hank Azaria. I am delighted that our production
is directed and choreographed by Marc Robin, and stars many familiar faces at CLO, including
returning Broadway performers Tom Hewitt and Elizabeth Stanley.
Speaking of familiar faces, as the sun sets on the final week of our 2014 Summer Series, I want to
thank each and every one of you for coming out to see our shows. We choose musicals we hope
will appeal to our multi-generational families of subscribers, and I’d love to know how we did and
which you enjoyed most, so if you’d care to, please drop me a line at [email protected].
I’d also like to thank our sponsors, donors, Board of Directors, CLO Ambassadors, CLO Guild and
dutiful interns for supporting us year-round and around the clock, which includes our ongoing
productions at the CLO Cabaret, where, I am pleased to report, September brings the triumphant
return of Dixie’s Tupperware Party. Post-Dixie, I also look forward to seeing you at A Musical
Christmas Carol, December 5-21, at the Byham Theater.
Our Mission
That men and women may work in safety
and that they, their families and their communities
may live in health throughout the world.

Until then, here’s to looking on the bright side of life, which, in my book, is the meaning of
musical comedy.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, and the show!

Writing New Chapters
On February 20, 1946, the Civic Light Opera
Association held a press luncheon to announce
its very first season. Immediately, talk of a new
era in Pittsburgh’s cultural
life made a huge splash in
all three of the city’s daily
newspapers. In fact, the Sun
Telegraph predicted, “the
CLO will inaugurate a cycle
in the city’s musical history
that will outlive us all.” Little
did they know that over the
next 68 years, Pittsburgh
CLO would define itself as a
leader in the musical theater
industry not only in Pittsburgh,
Pitt Stadium
but also across the country,
on Broadway, and now even
around the world. Since its earliest days, Pittsburgh CLO was a
forward-thinking organization. In 1946, the idea
of producing live musical theater under the stars
at Pitt Stadium was a bold undertaking, but
driven by the vision that musical theater could
bring a community together in celebration of a
true American art form, Pittsburgh CLO forged
ahead and today is hailed as one of the nation’s
premiere regional theaters.
With the support of nearly 200,000 patrons each
year, the organization continues to produce its
critically acclaimed summer season, launching
the careers of countless performers, welcoming
some of Broadway and Hollywood’s brightest
stars to the Pittsburgh stage and defining
Pittsburgh as a cultural destination.
However, our mission
compels us to do more.
Today, Pittsburgh CLO
provides year-round
entertainment at the CLO
Cabaret, unparalleled
performing arts training
at the Pittsburgh CLO
Academy, valuable
educational opportunities in
the community, recognition
for young performers at
the Gene Kelly Awards
and National High School
Musical Theater Awards,
opportunities for local artists on our stages
and work for talented craftsmen at the CLO
Construction Center for the Arts.
And it doesn’t end there.
Pittsburgh CLO is committed to ensuring a
successful future for the American musical art
form by developing new musicals and creating
new product for regional theaters, Broadway
and audiences in Pittsburgh, across the country
and around the world. Our involvement in more
than 20 Broadway shows as an investor or
producer has made it possible for Pittsburgh CLO
audiences to see award-winning musicals like
The Addams Family and Evita direct from
Broadway on the Pittsburgh CLO stage.

Eric Idle (Book, Lyrics and Music) has multihyphenated his way through life, from being a
writer and actor in the legendary “Monty Python”
TV series and movies, to the creator and director
of “The Rutles.” He has appeared on stage singing
rude songs with John Du Prez at Carnegie Hall and
the Hollywood Bowl as well as performing in two
highly successful tours, Eric Idle Exploits Monty
Python (2000) and The Greedy Bastard Tour (2003),
for which they journeyed 15,000 miles across North
America in a bus. His Greedy Bastard Diary of that
tour is available from Harper Collins. Their latest
work, a comic oratorio called Not the Messiah, will
be performed shortly in Toronto. His play Pass The
Butler ran for five months in London’s West End; he
has written two novels, Hello Sailor and The Road
to Mars, a children’s book, The Quite Remarkable
Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat, and a
bedside companion, The Rutland Dirty Weekend
Book. Spamalot has already won him a Tony®, a
Grammy and the respect of his wife and children.
John DU Prez (Composer) a Trevelyan Scholar at
Christ Church, Oxford, and Associate of the Royal
College of Music, he entered the film industry
in 1978 composing additional music for Monty
Python’s Life of Brian. This began a long association
with Eric Idle, leading eventually to their current
writing partnership. He has scored more than 20
feature films including The Meaning of Life, A Private
Function, A Fish Called Wanda, Once Bitten, UHF and
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I, II and III. Other
Python projects include the Contractual Obligation
Album, Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl and
The Fairly Incomplete & Rather Badly Illustrated
Monty Python Song Book. He was musical director
for Eric Idle’s two North American stage tours, Eric
Idle Exploits Monty Python (2000) and The Greedy
Bastard Tour (2003). This is his Broadway debut.
Monty PythoN. Is he God or Godot, an agent
of the devil or an agent of the William Morris
Agency, or is he, as some have argued, a fictitious
character invented in 1969 by Graham Chapman,
John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones
and Michael Palin in a desperate attempt to find
a title for their rather silly TV show? Whatever the
truth, he is the eponymous impresario who fronts
“The Flying Circus,” The Holy Grail, The Life of
Brian, The Meaning of Life, And Now for Something
Completely Different and who appeared Live at
Drury Lane, City Center and the Hollywood Bowl.
He has fronted numerous books including The
Big Red Book and the Papperbok as well as many
CDs, DVDs and matching ties and handkerchiefs.
He is currently in retirement in an old jokes home
near Dover, anxiously awaiting Nighthood and
a Knightnurse. This is his first Broadway show.

Pittsburgh CLO has been a driving force behind
the preservation, creation and promotion of live
musical theater since 1946. As one of the largest
regional musical theater organizations in the
country, it is fortunate for the yearly support of
nearly 200,000 audience members. In addition
to producing fresh new productions of Broadway
classics, the not-for-profit’s mission is to develop
new works and showcase emerging talent, and
has been credited with launching the careers of
numerous artists such as Rob Marshall, Kathleen
Marshall, Rob Ashford, Bernadette Peters, Shirley
Jones and Susan Schulman. The organization’s
dedication to musical theater extends beyond its
six-show summer season at the Benedum Center
to year-round programming at its 250-seat CLO
Cabaret Theater, which recently saw the world
premiere of Judge Jackie Justice, The Trials of
Love. Its extensive education efforts include its
CLO college intern program, New Horizons, and inschool programs such as the Gallery of Heroes and
Creative Vision. Other ongoing initiatives include
the Pittsburgh CLO Academy of Musical Theater, CLO
Mini Stars, the Construction Center for the Arts, The
Richard Rodgers Award, and the acclaimed Gene
Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical
Theater. The organization also founded and coproduces the National High School Musical Theater
