King of Cats
Berry was born to be a bookstore
cat.The big Tom had been living a rough
life on the streets, but once he came to
the Humane Society, he made it clear he
would prefer a life of leisure. He loves
people, craves attention, and tolerates
just about anything. So when the owner
of King’s Books came to the shelter
looking for a new store cat, Berry was
an easy choice.
While the handsome Tuxedo’s first
two weeks at the independent bookstore involved much hiding among
bookcases, he quickly warmed up and
made himself right at home. And the
bookworms are just eating him up.
During their “Name That Cat!” contest, more than 200 entries were submitted to King’s Books. It was difficult
to choose, but soon Berry was crowned
“Herbert” as an homage to Tacoma-based
author Frank Herbert, most known for
the Dune saga.
Herbert has cultivated quite a following
on social media, and in the store he is just
as popular. He roams the shelves, greeting everyone and offering an affectionate
presence. If a customer happens to sit
down, Herbert quickly claims their lap for
as long as possible. As shop owner sweet
pea Flaherty says, “Customers are trapped
by his warmth and companionship.”
The tradition of bookstore cats dates
back centuries, and is represented today
by Herbert and his in-store cat companion, Atticus. Both are rescue cats who
have made their way into the hearts of
local book lovers of all ages.

Jan McIlroy 1933 - 2015
2015 saw the passing of local Humane
Society pioneer, Jan McIlroy. As a board
member in 1991, she wasn’t satisfied
with the incremental decline in pet
euthanasia each year. The board and
staff were working hard to
encourage spay/neuter, but
that year 30,000 animals
entered the shelter and
only 28% were reunited
with owners or placed in
homes.
Jan convinced the board
it was time to attack the
problem from various angles. She and a
fellow board member created the Total
Impact Plan to Significantly Reduce Pet
Euthanasia. The plan created a low-cost
spay/neuter program, educational out-
reach, a higher license fee for unaltered
pets, mandatory spay/neuter the second
time a roaming pet was brought to the
shelter, and a ban on selling or giving
away pets in public places.
Together, these revolutionary programs set the
stage for dramatic changes. Just five years later, the
“save rate” had increased
to 40%.Today, the Humane
Society maintains a save
rate of 90% and achieves
the best possible outcome
for every pet we receive.
We know that our success is due to the
hard work of countless animal advocates
who came before, and especially to
those early visionaries like Jan.

When the Humane Society’s Volunteer Coordinator, Alex, was attending an
event at Cheney Stadium last summer,
she found something unexpected. As she
walked to her car, an emaciated cat ran
out from the weeds behind the parking
lot. He began rubbing up against her and
meowing loudly. Of course, she scooped
him up and brought him to the shelter.
The sweet tabby was severely malnourished, dehydrated, covered with
sores and nearly bald from a flea allergy.
It was amazing that he had survived, since
he was also found to be declawed!

of food and fell promptly asleep. A volunteer took him home to foster for six
weeks, where he gained five pounds and
most of his hair.When he returned for
adoption, it only took a few hours before
someone fell for his charm and he left
the shelter for a new life.

Report. I hope you will
join us in celebrating our
successes and rejoicing in
the thousands of animals
helped through Humane
Society programs.
Behind the many numbers you will
see are individual animals whose lives
have been transformed by the work of the
Humane Society: abused or neglected
dogs who have been rehabilitated and
placed in loving homes, lost cats who
have been reunited with their owners,
orphaned kittens who were
rescued and nurtured back
to health. Each number
is a story, and each story
is made possible through
your generous support.
Thank you so much for

the chance they need, and
helping to create a compassionate community for animals and people.

From the Executive Director
It has been an exciting,
eventful year for animals in
Pierce County. In 2015, we
achieved a life-saving rate of
90%, and every animal in our
care received the best possible
outcome!
Over the past few decades,
there has been a steady decrease in pet overpopulation. This means
we no longer receive thousands of puppies
and kittens in need of a home. While the
number of homeless pets has decreased,
the animals in transition at the shelter now
often require more resources before they
can move to new homes.
Increasingly, the pets in our care require
medical treatment or behavior therapy
before they can be adopted. They may be
geriatric dogs, unsocial cats or nursing
kittens. But we are committed to doing
whatever is necessary to give these pets
the best possible life and the best possible
outcome.
Because we no longer receive an
abundance of puppies and kittens, we
have been reaching out to
other shelters who need our
help. Through organizations
like Wings of Rescue, we are
taking in a small number of
young, healthy, friendly dogs
who need nothing more than
a loving home. They are usually adopted within a day or
two. We are happy to be in a position to
offer hope to these animals from overcrowded facilities outside our area, while
we continue to take care of pets from our
own community who need special help
before they can be adopted.
We are grateful for our generous,
compassionate community for supporting
the work we do, and helping us create a
community where all pets are treated with
respect and compassion. Thank you for all
you do for animals!

Finding Homes for Shelter Pets
Dillon came to the Humane Society
last November after he was hit by a
car. His leg was badly fractured, and
had to be amputated, but he healed
quickly and had no trouble getting
around on three legs.
By February he was ready for a new
home, and that’s when Marissa and
her boyfriend stopped by the shelter.
As soon as Marissa reached into his
cage to pet him, he began purring
loudly.
She instantly fell in love, and barely
even noticed his missing leg. She took
Dillon home, and later wrote to tell us
he was the “perfect cat” and “the best
Valentine’s gift ever!”
In 2015, the Humane Society
found loving homes for 6,342 lost
and abandoned pets, giving them the
chance for a new start and enriching
the lives of their new owners. 852 pets
were adopted through local PetSmart
and Petco stores, as well as Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital and other
off-site venues. 624 pets found homes
after being transferred to other animal
welfare organizations. In addition, 115
feral or under-socialized cats were
placed with owners in rural areas as
“barn cats,” and 282 were altered and
returned to an existing cat colony.
Reuniting Lost Pets with Owners
Last year, the Humane Society reunited 1,892 lost pets with their owners, including little Top. His owner,
Kendra, returned home one day to find
her house had been burglarized and
her little dog missing. She was frantic
to find him, and immediately rushed
to the Humane Society. When she
saw him curled on a bed in one of
the kennels, she burst into tears. Top
had been her friend since she was ten
years old, and she was overjoyed to
find him safe and sound. “I didn’t care
if they took everything I had,” she said.
“I just wanted Top back!”

Caring for Shelter Pets
When pets enter the shelter, we
do everything we can to reduce their
stress and keep them comfortable.
Dogs have raised beds, blankets, Kong
toys filled with treats, daily walks, and
are bathed and groomed as needed.
They may also receive basic obedience lessons with “clicker training,”
which helps them focus and anticipate
rewards for calm behavior. Cats have
soft bedding, roomy enclosures with
separate litterbox access, toys, privacy
when needed, and petting and play
sessions called “Purr Time.” Multiple
cats can stay in our Petunia Louise
Community Cat Room, where they
can roam, climb, play, and lounge in
the sunlight while awaiting adoption.
1,077 shelter pets were nurtured
in volunteer foster homes. They
were recovering from medical or behavior issues, were too young for adoption,
needed a hospice home, or were awaiting
adoption.
525 cats enjoyed petting, brushing,
and play-time with volunteers during “Purr Time” sessions. Volunteers also took 5,966 dogs for walks and
held 181 Behavior Assessments.
1,741 shelter pets were bathed
and groomed, and more than
4,000 received medical treatment.

Improving the Lives of Community Pets
Our mission to “promote positive relationships between animals
and people” means that we want
to do everything possible to help
keep pets with their owners, and
to ensure they are safe and cared
for in their homes. The Senior Pet
Pantry delivers pet food to housebound seniors who might otherwise be unable to keep their pets.
Teams of volunteers canvass underserved neighborhoods to help with
pet problems, and offer free spay/
neuter vouchers and vaccines. Pet
owners who cannot afford vital
veterinary care can also be assisted. Working together, we are
creating a compassionate community
where every pet is safe and loved.
560 pet owners in under-served neighborhoods received assistance; 734 pets were vaccinated; and 611 were spayed or neutered through the Pets for Life program.
5,593 families received help feeding their pets through the Pet Food Bank and Senior
Pet Pantry.
1,264 pets received assistance with the cost of veterinary care through the Community
Pet Care Fund.
Eliminating Pet Overpopulation
Through Low-Cost Spay/Neuter
Low-cost spay and neuter surgeries have been the key to dramatically
reducing pet overpopulation over the
years. We are committed to maintaining zero euthanasia of adoptable
pets, and will continue to provide the
resources so that every pet owner has
access to affordable spay & neuter
surgery.
2,650 pets belonging to low-income owners were spayed or neutered last year through
a variety of programs, including the Cinderella Fund, Spay Day promotions, the
“Responsi-bull” program for altering Pit Bulls, and free vouchers given to cat owners
who brought kittens to the shelter.

Celebrating Pets
and Raising Funds for Shelter Programs
Every summer for the past 25 years,
pet owners from all over Western Washington gather to walk their dogs and raise
pledges for the Humane Society. From a
small walk raising $150, the event has
grown each year, attracting more walkers, and more donations – all to help
homeless pets. Funds from the Dog-AThon support programs that provide veterinary care for shelter pets, enrich their
experience while at the shelter, and help
them find permanent, loving homes.
$303,000 was raised at the Humane
Society’s 2015 Walk for Homeless Pets,
and thousands of people and their pets
celebrated the joys of pet ownership.
Engaging Volunteers
to Meet Our Mission
Humane Society volunteers work hard to improve
the lives of homeless animals. Whether they are assembling adoption packets, delivering pet food to a housebound senior, or staffing a vaccine clinic, our volunteers
ease staff workload and provide care and comfort to
thousands of shelter pets.
Last year, 631 volunteers gave 75,742 hours to help
homeless animals, working at 27 different volunteer
positions.

The Humane Society accepts every pet that comes to our door, regardless of age,
health, or adoptability. Last year, 382 dogs, 551 cats, 27 rabbits and 70 “other” animals were classified as unadoptable due to severe medical or behavior issues, and
were humanely euthanized.

and loving home, every companion animal is
spayed or neutered and all pets are treated
with respect and compassion.
The Humane Society is a private, non-profit
organization that relies on donations to fund
its vital programs. The Humane Society is
not associated with any government agency,
nor is it affiliated with any national animal
welfare organization.
