Photos courtesy the Collings Foundation SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - To honor of our WWII Veterans, The Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour is bringing the extremely rare bomber and fighter aircraft tour to the region as a local living history display. These flying machines will amaze the tour’s attendees. This is an opportunity to visit, explore, and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. The B-17 is one of only 8 in flying condition in the United States. The B-24J and Full Dual Control P-51C Mustang are the sole remaining examples of their type flying in the World. The B-25 is best known for being used in the daring Doolittle raid. The Wings of Freedom Tour travels the nation as a flying tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect; and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve. The B-17, B-25 & B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s and B-24s safely brought their crews home. The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers “Little Friend” – saving countless crews from attacking axis fighters. After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The rarity of the B-17, B-25, B-24 & P-51 - and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide. At each location we encourage local veterans and their families to visit and share their experiences and stories with the public. For aviation enthusiasts, the tour provides opportunity for the museum to come to the visitor and not the other way around! Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out. Photo courtesy RCPD. Police Department (RCPD) launched a new, innovative program to build positive relationships with local students. Two police officers are assigned to every Rancho Cordova school where they get to know the students. Through a partnership with school administrators, students are recognized once per month for academic performance, good behavior, and regular attendance. During an outdoor assembly on May 18th, eleven Cordova Meadows Elementary School Kindergarteners received certificates of recognition, and three lucky students were awarded new bikes that they bid on using Cub Cash that they earned. Students earn Cub Cash by living the school values of “I Care,” “I Appreciate,” and “I Perform” and by showing empathy toward others. “Good Day Sacramento” joined in the fun by broadcasting live from the school and interviewing the students. Over 300 students have been recognized since the program launched in fall 2015. Source: City of Rancho Cordova H Women’s Empowerment has received two grants totaling $25,000 from Union Pacific and Nationwide to help homeless women in Sacramento find homes and jobs that support their families through the most comprehensive job-readiness program in the Sacramento area specifically designed for homeless women. Union Pacific provided $10,000, and Nationwide provided $15,000. “Although the economy is improving, finding work when a woman is homeless can be nearly impossible without the right tools,” said Lisa Culp, executive director, Women’s Empowerment. “The situation of homeless families in our community is dire – the Sacramento County Office of Education reports nearly 12,000 students are experiencing homelessness. We are grateful to Union Pacific and Nationwide for providing funding that will break the cycle of homelessness for many of these families.” Women’s Empowerment’s initial eight-week program for women who are homeless in Sacramento provides women with free onsite child care in the group’s child development center and transportation assistance. Each woman works with a master’s level social worker to address her root causes of homelessness, attending classes on job-readiness, confidence and empowerment. She receives health services, focuses on job readiness with her employment specialist and volunteer career mentor, and learns financial literacy. When she graduates after eight weeks, she can access Women’s Empowerment’s graduate services at any point in her life, which include certifications, counseling, GED preparation, access to a professional clothing closet, financial literacy, and paid job training through the group’s Get A Job Kit Training and small business. Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Women’s Empowerment was recently featured on NBC’s TODAY Show and on CNN.com for offering the most comprehensive job-readiness program in the Sacramento area designed specifically for women who are homeless and their children. The 2014 Organization of the Year has graduated 1,322 homeless women and their 3,000 children. Last year, 93 percent of graduates found homes and 83 percent found jobs or enrolled in school or training. The program combines self-esteem courses, job training, health classes and support services to help homeless women across diverse ages, races and cultures. Women’s Empowerment is funded solely through private donations from the community. To donate online: www.womens-empowerment.org. The award recipients were announced during the District’s sixth-annual Community Partners Luncheon held in April, which is organized each year to recognize and celebrate local businesses, nonprofits and faith-based organizations for being valued collaborators in student achievement. Through myriad contributions in and out of the classroom - volunteer mentors, enrichment programs, unique learning opportunities, donations of resources and more - Folsom Cordova’s community partners help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in the world around them. This year’s award recipients were selected by Superintendent Deborah Bettencourt from among nearly 45 nominations from school principals, teachers, and staff. In January, two rocket scientists led a virtual tour of the company’s highly secured facility with 200 students at Riverview STEM Academy in Rancho Cordova. The company also continued its ongoing sponsorship of the District’s annual STEM Expo, where student-led innovation is showcased each year. The Rancho Cordova-based charity supplies food to children in schools with high populations of low-income families including Rancho Cordova, Cordova Villa, and Williamson elementary schools. Many children rely on these schools for their daily meals, but on the weekend, some families struggle to obtain the food they need. Blessings in a Backpack donates food every Friday to get kids through the weekend so they come back to school healthy and ready to learn on Monday. The Independent • 3 June 3, 2016 Hillside Park Plans Grand Opening RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Recreation and Park District is celebrating the grand opening of Hillside Park on Friday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. The festivities will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a free ice-cream social. The new 8-acre park located in the Sunridge/North Douglas area features two playgrounds, a large informal play field, a basketball half-court and two covered picnic areas. The park also includes a unique “play hill” featuring concrete and steel tube waterfall slides, a rope ladder and other play structures. “The park property with its steep slopes presented an interesting challenge,” said CRPD District Administrator Jim Rodems. “CRPD staff and the landscape architects arrived at a solution to work with, instead of against, the existing landscape.” Hillside park also features water-conserving no mow grass and drought-tolerant native plants. The park is a turnkey project developed by Lennar Corporation and designed by Stantec Architecture, Inc. and will be the 36th park in the district. The grand opening event will by catered by Rich’s Ice Cream Catering featuring Gunther’s Homemade Ice Cream. The event is sponsored by Lennar Corporation, Stantec, Miracle Playsystems and Woodside Homes. Source: Cordova Recreation and Park District H Oops, We Goofed! RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - We inadvertantly left out the name of the photographer that shot all of those incredible international festival iFest photos in last weeks’ Grapevine Independent, and for that we’re sorry. We’d like to thank Rick Sloan for all the fantastic photos of that event! H It Takes a Lincoln Village Rancho Cordova, CA (MPG) The “It Takes a Lincoln Village” neighborhood group, the City of Rancho Cordova, the Sacramento Tree Foundation, and 75 volunteers partnered to plant 100 new trees in the Lincoln Village neighborhood on May 21. This effort, which is FREE to residents, further showcases Rancho Cordova as an inviting and vibrant community that wants to continue growing its urban tree canopy. City staff went door-to-door to seek participants, a n d t h e S a c r a m e n t o Tre e Foundation consulted with each participant to recommend the best tree for each yard. It’s a little-known fact that trees actually help retain essential water in the soil and require little water, making them a great drought-tolerant option to increase property values. Trees also lower household energy costs, provide clean air, and have a positive net gain return on investment for every dollar invested. This program is one of many made possible through a $75,000 grant from the City’s Community Enhancement Fund. Source: City of Rancho Cordova Photos courtesy City of Rancho Cordova H Cordova Community Pool Visioning Session RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Recreation and Park District is holding the first of two Cordova Community Pool Renovation Project visioning sessions on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at Hagan Community Center. The renovation project aims to restore the state-of-the-art training and competitive pool facility and incorporate new elements that will increase the usage and value of the aquatic center. The pool is home to local swim teams, the Cordova Blue Marlins, the Cordova Cordettes and Cordova High School, and provides a venue for lessons, programs and family entertainment. The purpose of the visioning sessions is to continue the community outreach efforts of the district and provide an opportunity for interested parties to participate in the design process. The visioning sessions will be facilitated by independent consultant Brent Ives. Brent is the owner of BHI Management Consulting and has more than 20 years of experience working with public agencies. Brent was a city councilmember for 23 years, with the last 8 years serving as Mayor of the City of Tracy. For more information, visit CRPD’s website at www.crpd. com. Source: Cordova Recreation and Park District H 4 • The Independent June 3, 2016 And Another Thing ... School is Closed, the Temperature Outside is in the 90S, and the Kids Don’t Care What the Calendar Says It’s summer time, at least that’s what the kids who are out of school think. We have four grandsons and May 26th was their last day of school. Now the calendar says that summer officially begins on June 20th, but school is closed, the temperature outside is in the 90s, and the kids don’t care what the calendar says. So they are outside playing if there is a place for them to play, or they are inside watching cartoons, playing computer games, or reading a book. Don’t be shocked, our grandkids actually enjoy reading. They started reading long before they began school, so when they are tired of their games or toys, we are very happy way to watch them grab a book. Our City of Rancho Cordova has been given many awards over the 13 years we have incorporated, and here are two we have just received. The first came in May from the “International Institute of Municipal Clerks”. The Award is titled the “2016 Program Excellence in Governance Award, Innovative Outreach to Citizens.” It was given to our City Clerk Mindy Cuppy who in the past received the award for being the “City Clerk of the State of California”. And on June 2nd at “The Firehouse Restaurant” in “Old Sacramento”, the “Sacramento Housing Alliance” said, “We are pleased to be celebrating and recognizing the innovative projects and strong community leaders named at their 2016 Fundraising Dinner.” The “Housing Innovation, Permanent Supportive Homes Award” was given for the “Mather Veterans Village,” and the recipients were Mercy Housing California, Veterans Resource Centers of America, and the City of Rancho Cordova. Working with our partners at Mather, we have been able to complete the first 50 apartments at the Veterans Village, and we are working on “Phase 3” to build the last 50 apartments. Building the apartments, and giving the Veterans permanent housing only one block from the VA Hospital, is very gratifying, and we know it will help our Veterans receive the help they need and deserve. On to other things. Many people in Rancho Cordova are doing their spring cleaning now (we are too), and being able to have bulk pickup in front of your house is being taken advantage of by many. But sometimes, people may forget that whoever places the items on the street is responsible for calling “Republic Services” for the pickup. Technically, the bulk pickup is only supposed to be in front of WIDOWED PERSONS ASSOCIATION OF CALIFORNIA your house for 48 hours before the pickup. Residents can have the bulk pickup done three times every year, and the cost is part of your regular garbage bill. So don’t forget to call “Republic Services” at 916-638-9000 and get a date for the pickup. And another thing that is important will be to pay attention to the information that your water purveyor (e.g. Golden State, CalAm, Sacramento County) will provide about the possible change of your water usage this coming year. The State Water Resources Control Board adopted new emergency drought regulations on May 18th, 2016, providing water suppliers with an opportunity to factor local supply and anticipated demand. Water suppliers must provide data and conservation strategies to the State Water Board by June 22nd, 2016. For the time being, however, the existing drought restrictions and state-issued conservation mandates remain in place. We’ll have to wait and see what the final decisions will be even though some parts of the state received much needed relief in the winter and spring. We will also have to watch to see if the Governor’s twin tunnels come to pass. That would be like putting the drought back on our backs. Let’s hope. F ro m C o u n c i l m a n B o b McGarvey, God bless, and see you next time. The traditional seventh-inning stretch turned into the “seventh-inning flex,” when fans twisted and stretched in a two-minute workout led by Dinger, the team’s mascot, and local “Champions for Change.” “There’s no greater way to celebrate the launch of this important campaign than by showing how even the seventh-inning stretch is an opportunity to be better,” said River Cats General Manager Chip Maxson. “Our players were happy to join ‘Champions for Change’ in coming up with this fun activity for our fans and creating a new healthy baseball tradition right here at Raley Field.” The “Be Better” campaign promotes new federal dietary guidelines that recommend Americans focus on making small shifts in what they eat and drink to prevent chronic health conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Having a normal weight reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 70 percent. The “Be Better” campaign will include English and Spanish ads on television and radio stations, billboards and Web banners. There will also be Dr. Smith (top right in photo) launched the campaign at the River Cats game. Photo courtesy of CDPH community-level promotions coordinated with local health departments. The ads will feature “Champions for Change” – real people who have committed to be better for themselves and their families by being more active, drinking water instead of sugary drinks, and eating more fruits and vegetables. After taking third place in the triple jump at the section’s Divisional IV-V meet at California State University, Stanislaus in Turlock two weeks ago, Gulchuk was looking to leap to a berth at the California Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Championships that will be held at Buchanan High School in Clovis starting today, Friday. Gulchuk was one of 12 girls in the second flight of the Masters’ trials, and 24 altogether. After warming up with the other girls in her flight, Gulchuk attempted her first attempt. She cleared 34 feet, 1 inch. She matched the same mark on her second attempt. Approaching her third and final attempt, Making the catch during a recent Cordova High School baseball game is catcher Logan Appino, who was the lone Lancer to be named to the allSVC squad. Photo by Rick Sloan By Mike Bush RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Logan Appino was the lone Cordova’s Julia Gulcuk during her first attempt at the triple jump at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track and Field Championships at Elk Grove High last week. Cordova triple jumper Julia Gulchuk warms up running through the triple jump pit. Gulchuck exceeded her previous attempts, this time going to 34 feet, 5 ½ inches. But that fell four inches short of reaching the section’s at-large berth at 38-4 and a top three finish, as the Lady Lancers’ prep career came to an end. She took 11th place in her flight and 17th overall. The top three or those who matched the section’s at-large berth advance to the state meet. “Over the last few months we have been training for her to make this meet,” said Cordova head coach Shane Jackson of Gulchuk, who officially graduated from CHS last Friday. “She has done amazing with hard work and dedication.” According to Jackson, Gulchuk will be attending American River College in Sacramento this fall. She plans to compete for the college’s women’s track and field team next spring. “She will excel at ARC,” Jackson said. Davis’ Alyssa Langtat was the winner at 39-1, followed by teammate Tessa Malone H also at the same mark. Cordova High School baseball player who was named to the allSierra Valley Conference team this season. In 21 games this season, Appino, a junior catcher, had a .448 batting average. Some of his hits were five doubles. He also scored 18 times, seven stolen bases and six RBIs. “Logan was another young man who welcomed me from the first day I got there,” said Cordova head coach Doug Hughes, who completed his first season in running the program. “He is just a terrific kid. He is a very quiet and leads by example. He works extremely hard every single day.” Appino also played centerfield when he wasn’t behind the plate. “We lost our centerfielder to injury and he volunteered to play center,” Hughes said. “We could play Logan anywhere and not worry about that position. I look forward to having Logan back for his senior year.” On defense, Appino had a .959 fielding percentage. He also pitched in three games this season, starting in two of those games. He allowed only 25 hits and struck out 13 batters. The quad champions of the SVC – Union Mine, Liberty Ranch, El Dorado and Rosemont – dominated the all-SVC honors list. H Region’s Renters Just Can’t Make It “Work” Sacramento Residents Earning Minimum Wage Must Work 2 Full-time Jobs, 52-Weeks a Year to Afford Two-Bedroom Apartment has gone in the wrong direction – reducing investment in building homes families can afford by 79% since 2008 and turning away billions in federal funds,” said Ray Pearl, Executive Director of the California Housing Consortium. “Each year California delays in meeting the rising demand for affordable homes, more families are pushed into poverty. Governor Brown and the legislature must make this the year we change direction and get California building again.” Working at the minimum wage of $10/hour in California, a family must have 2 wage earners working full-time, 52 weeks a year, or one full-time earner working 79 hours/week, 52 weeks a year, to afford a modest two-bedroom apartment in Sacramento. “From 2000-2014, while rents in Sacramento County have skyrocketed 13%, renter household income has dropped 13%," said Shamus Roller, executive SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - In order to afford a modest, two-bedroom apartment at fair market rent in Sacramento, renters need to earn $19.73 hour. This is Sacramento's 2016 Housing Wage, revealed in a national report released today. The report, Out of Reach 2016, was jointly released by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, a Washington, DC-based research and advocacy organization, Housing California, and the California Housing Consortium. Every year, Out of Reach reports on the Housing Wage for all states, counties, and metropolitan areas in the country. The report highlights the gap between what renters earn and what it costs to afford rent at fair market value. The typical renter in Sacramento earns $14.96/hour, which is $4.77 less than the hourly wage needed to afford a modest 2-bedroom apartment. “As families struggle to keep up with soaring rents, our state director of Housing California. "Things can't continue this way. People are not just falling into poverty, California's out-of-control rents are keeping them trapped there. It's time for Governor Brown and the state Legislature to make bold investments in affordable development. It is undeniably a key part of the solution to California's housing crisis.” Assembly Democrats, led by Assemblymembers David Chiu (D-San Francisco) and Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond), with the support of Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Los Angeles), have proposed that California use a one-time budget surplus to invest $1.3 billion in proven affordable home programs and innovative housing opportunities for Californians. Can you use tea as your medicine for fitness and weight loss? According to health and wellness expert Dr. Holly Lucille, you certainly can. Dieting can be hard work and frustrating too… especially after days or weeks of deprivation and that number on the scale has hardly moved. It might even go in the wrong direction all together. But before you give up, listen up. Don’t head to that pint of Ben and Jerry’s yet. The good Doc has a simple suggestion she shared with me on POPPOFF that can help all struggling dieters. How about a tea detox? According to Dr. Lucille, there are two primary reasons why body toxins interfere with weight loss. 1) “Our bodies try to protect us from dangerous substances by isolating and surrounding them with mucous, fat, and fluid so that they will not cause an imbalance or trigger an immune 2) “Toxins cause inflammation, leading to leptin resistance. When leptin resistance occurs in the body, excess weight is maintained.” Teas have been used for detoxifying and healing properties for many centuries. Here are a few tea types that have been shown both anecdotally and clinically to stimulate the detoxification process and/or jump-start the burning of resistant body fat. 1) GREEN TEA. Green tea has many well-researched health benefits including its ability to reduce oxidative stress, slow the aging process, reduce the formation of fat cells, speed metabolism, and increase fat-burning. 2) OOLONG WU YI TEA. Grown in the mountains of China, Oolong increase metabolism, improves alertness and cognitive function. Medicinally, it has been used to prevent tooth decay, cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. 3) ROOIBOS TEA. A healing tea with anti-viral and antiinflammatory properties. 4) GINGER TEA. This tea aids digestive health, lowers cholesterol, dilates blood vessels, triggers thermogenesis, and boosts metabolism. 5) BIRCH TEA. Assists the transfer of toxins out of the body through the skin by stimulating perspiration. Birch possesses antiviral properties and is an immune activator. 6) GUARANA TEA. Guarana lessens food cravings and also increases the metabolic rate. It also acts as a diuretic, aiding the body in the elimination of excess fluids. 7) SYNERGISTIC BLENDS. Tea blends. Blended formulations give dieters and health enthusiasts additional benefits derived from the synergistic effect of the teas when taken in combination. Blended teas like Fit Tea, which contains the organic teas listed above and more, are enjoying tremendous consumer acceptance. Healing teas have been around for thousands of years, but there is a surge in their use for both detoxing and slenderizing bodies. Dr. Holly Lucille is a nationally recognized and licensed naturopathic doctor and educator who has appeared on a myriad of TV programs with the likes of “Dr. Oz” and “The Doctors.” In her book, “The Art of Detoxing,” she explores all the possibilities for doing this thing detoxification which can help with getting fit and weight loss. To start, computer science must become a central component of our education system. According to a recent Gallup survey commissioned by Google, less than one third of K-12 teachers and administrators say that computer science is a top priority for their school. In a survey commissioned by defense contractor Raytheon, 82 percent of millennials reported that no teacher or guidance counselor had ever mentioned the possibility of a job in cybersecurity. Thankfully, some policymakers are attempting to change the status quo. On top of President Obama’s national initiative, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has committed his city's school system to offering computer science classes to all students within 10 years. Efforts to ignite a passion for cybersecurity careers should give special attention to young women. According to that same Raytheon survey, men are five times more likely to consider a career in cybersecurity than women. Research from a study I'm conducting with colleagues from Cisco and the wider tech community for an upcoming book called The Internet of Women, supports Raytheon's findings. Another valuable step would be the creation of a cybersecurity scholarship program. The National Science Foundation Commentary by Nada Marie Anid Barack Obama just became the first U.S. president to write a line of computer code. The gesture is part of a national push for computer science education. In fact, the White House recently announced a $4 billion “Computer Science for All” initiative that will help educate the next generation of coders. It couldn’t have come soon enough. In addition to playing an increasingly central role in business, computer science know-how is vital to America's economic and national security. 2015 was the worst year ever for cybercrime, with nearly 1,000 major data breaches. These attacks included the theft of 21.5 million records from the federal government's Office of Personnel Management and a T-Mobile breach that exposed the names, addresses, and Social Security numbers of 15 million customers. Efforts to bolster cybersecurity all face the same obstacle: a shortage of talent. Protecting our citizens requires a largescale effort to attract talented people to the cyber workforce and then train them to meet and thwart modern, unexpected threats. There are currently 209,000 unfilled positions for cybersecurity workers in the United States, according to a Stanford University report. Worldwide, the figure totals roughly 1 million. already offers funding for degrees related to cybersecurity, provided recipients work for the government upon graduation. What’s needed is a more ambitious scholarship program, similar in scope to the GI Bill. Private-sector businesses such as technology firms and military contractors should establish related initiatives, offering to pay off education loans for students who accept in-house cybersecurity positions. But it won’t be enough to simply encourage more Americans to earn degrees in computer science. Students also need access to tech immersion programs to see the practical implications of their studies. My own university, New York Institute of Technology, has worked with industry leaders to create internships and other real-world experiences and opportunities. And we’ve dramatically increased our cybersecurity course offerings, hiring expert faculty in biometrics, swarm intelligence, cryptography, data mining and forensics, and network security. We’ve even added a cybersecurity concentration for undergraduates and a master’s program. America faces mounting cyber threats. Only through better funding incentives and hands-on immersive training can we hope to attract more young people to the cybersecurity field. Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D. is dean of the school of engineering and computing sciences at New York Institute of Technology. H Earn $200 per month for just a few hours delivery work per week!
