Dear Navy Leaguers,
March is upon us and it is time for a membership drive. We are planning a steak fry at the Carrillo home and this is a great opportunity to invite new people to interact with the Navy League. We
will have tickets available so you can sell them to your friends and family. Please give me a call
or send and email and I will get tickets to you to sell.
We are also looking forward to attending the Los Angeles Air Show in Lancaster on March 20th.
The Blue Angels will be making an appearance and there will be many exciting static displays. If
you wish to join the caravan that is going to Lancaster, Please let me know.
Finally, continue to support the legislative action of the United States Navy League. You can read
about the issues by following this link:
http://navyleague.org/legislativeaffairs/legislative-links.html
We need to work together to let Congress know that we support the Jones Act and the funding of
maintenance for the Sea Services. Together we can accomplish all our goals.

Commander’s Corner MAR 2016 by Lieutenant Commander Hollie Brown, US Naval Sea Cadets
Corps
March starts with a color guard for the Planes of Fame monthly program at Chino Airport. The featured
plane is the Republic P-47G. If you’d like to get a glimpse, go to planesoffame.org where you can see the
plane in action and read up on the panel of pilots who will share about its flying capabilities and hold a
question and answer time. The show starts at 10am if you are interested in attending.
The cadets are continuing to practice for Flagship, which will be in April this year. Exhibition Armed and
Unarmed teams should be set and working on routines. Cadets are also practicing Seamanship events of
knot-tying, line-heaving, semaphore (signaling with flags), firefighting, first aid, and swimming. Other events
they are practicing for include Color guard, Personnel inspection, and Regulation Drill.
The Leaguers (ages 10-13) are also busy practicing their Flagship events. Not sure how they’ll do, but
they’re have fun trying everything out.
Our Annual Inspection took place on base the 27 FEB. Paul Revere earned an overall score of 3.86 and
Training Ship Independence earned 3.75, both out of 4.0. Overall we did very well. Now we wait for all
other units across the nation to complete their inspections and then NHQ will list the top 10. All inspections must be completed by the end of this month. Then each area Regional Director (RD) has until the
end of April to get results in to National Headquarters. Ours has already been emailed to the RD and the
new system receives it as soon as he forwards it.
Promotions for MAR:
Leaguers – Training Ship Independence (ages 10-13):
Able Cadet (LC3) – Olivia Adams and Jacob Tahir
Petty Officer 2nd Class – Jacob Mc Cormick
Sea Cadets – Paul Revere Division (ages 13-18):
Seaman Apprentice, temp. (E2T) – Angelina Branco (needs boot camp for full E2)
Petty Officer 1st Class – Decklan Eaden (NHQ promotion received)
I also want to welcome our newest cadet, Tim Button, to the Sea Cadets.
Thank you all again for your support of this great youth program!
I hope to see you Friday 29 APR at the Carrillo home in Corona for Steak Dinner at the Navy League social.
Respectfully,

USS John C. Stennis
SOUTH CHINA SEA (NNS) -- The John C. Stennis Strike Group (JCSSG) is conducting routine operations in the South China
Sea. The ships transited the Luzon Strait March 1 and have maintained a location in the eastern half of these international
waters for four days.
USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93), USS Stockdale (DDG 106) and USS Mobile Bay (CG 53) all conducted a replenishment-at-sea today receiving advanced biofuel, aviation fuel and supplies from USNS Rainier (T-AOE 7).
Flight operations have occurred daily with Carrier Airwing (CVW) 9 conducting 266 sorties.
Numerous People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA(N)) vessels have remained in JCSSG's vicinity during this time period.
"We have Chinese ships around us that we normally didn't see in my past experience," said Capt. Greg Huffman, Stennis'
commanding officer. Huffman previously deployed to the South China Sea in 2007.
"Everything I have heard over bridge-to-bridge channels has been good communications between professional mariners," he
added.
In recent months, other U.S. Navy ships have conducted similar events in the 7th Fleet area of operations including the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54), USS Lassen (DDG 82), USS Preble (DDG 88) and
USS McCampbell (DDG 85), the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), the amphibious dock landing
ship USS Ashland (LSD 48), the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), and the Freedomclass littoral combat ship USS Fort Worth (LCS 3).
JCSSG is the centerpiece of the Great Green Fleet, a year-long initiative highlighting the Navy's efforts to transform its energy use to increase operational capability. The strike group is using energy efficiency measures, to include technologies and
operational procedures, and alternative fuel in the course of its normal operations.
JCSSG is on a regularly scheduled deployment to 7th Fleet. Associated units include USS Stennis with CVW-9 and Destroyer
Squadron (DESRON) 21 embarked, guided-missile destroyers USS Stockdale, USS Chung-Hoon, and USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110), and guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay.
CVW-9 consists of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 14, Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 112, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 133 and Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 151, 97, 41
and 14.

USS Washington
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy will christen its newest Virginia-class attack submarine USS Washington (SSN
787), Saturday, March 5, during an 11 a.m. EST ceremony at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia.
The ceremony will be broadcast live at http://navylive.dodlive.mil.
Elisabeth Mabus is the ship's sponsor. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will deliver the principal address.
"The christening of the future USS Washington brings this technological marvel one step closer to joining the
fleet where it will serve as a crucial piece of the finest expeditionary fighting force the world has ever known,"
said Mabus. "Submarines like the Washington, and all of our platforms, are essential to our Sailors and Marines'
ability to do their jobs. Our ships, and those who build them, enable our Navy and Marine Corps to maintain a
global presence and protect America. This ceremony is a celebration of not only a submarine but also those who
worked to build it--the backbone of our ability to protect our nation--our shipbuilders."
The future Washington is the 14th Virginia-class nuclear submarine and the fourth Virginia-class Block III submarine. The ship began construction in 2011 and will commission in 2017.
Block III and later Virginia-class submarines have a redesigned bow which feature a water-backed large aperture bow (LAB) sonar array and two large diameter Virginia payload tubes (VPTs), each capable of launching six
Tomahawk cruise missiles. The two VPTs replace 12 individual vertical launch system (VLS) tubes utilized on
earlier submarines. The VPTs simplify construction, reduce acquisition costs, and provide for more payload flexibility than the smaller VLS tubes due to their increased volume. The Washington will have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of
land areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; Special Forces delivery and support; and mine delivery and minefield mapping. So far, 12 Virginia-class
submarines have been delivered, 11 are in construction and five are under contract.
The future Washington will be the third U.S. Navy ship to be commissioned with a name honoring the State of
Washington. The previous two ships were a World War II battleship (BB-56), decommissioned in 1947, and an
armored cruiser (ACR-11) which served under the name from 1905 to 1916.
Virginia-class submarines weigh 7,800 tons and are 377 feet in length, have a 34 foot beam and can operate at
more than 25 knots submerged. They are built with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the
planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time. These next-generation attack
submarines provide the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation's undersea supremacy well
into the 21st century. They have improved stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities and special warfare
enhancements that will enable them to meet the Navy's multi-mission requirements.
Additional information about Virginia class submarines is available online athttp://www.navy.mil/navydata/
