In winter this idyllic village of chalets and its wonderful walking area are transformed into a paradise for winter sport. With its extensive mountain transport network, its ever increasing wellness facilities, and its commitment to family-friendly holidays, this village at the foot of the Wildstrubel can be counted amongst the Bernese Oberland’s varied holiday destinations, in summer and in winter. In Adelboden you are spoilt for choice as far as accommodation is concerned. Whether you prefer to sleep in a hayloft or the uniqueness of a design hotel, a four star superior hotel with great spa facilities or a campsite, Adelboden has it all. Alpine wellness – a unique way to feel great! This is a place full of energy and sporting challenges but in harmony with nature. Alpine wellness is the centre of focus in Adelboden. In this wonderful natural scenery and genuine mountain world, you will find enjoyment and relaxation. In summer there is a huge range of activities: a gentle walk along the alpine “Senses Path”, an insight into the secrets of cheese production with one of the local alpine herdsmen, a demanding hike up on the Wildstrubel, a tour of discovery of the nearby beauty spots on a FLYER electric bike or a speedy descent from the mountain on a trotti bike. If it is an adrenalin kick you are looking for try the bridge jump in the Adventure Park Rehärti. There’s no shortage of fun and variety in Adelboden! 5 Winter for Every Taste Explore the 210 km of pistes in the Adelboden-Lenk ski area or enjoy a fondue in the unique atmosphere of the large igloo on the Engstligenalp – arriving on foot, on dog sledges or on skis. The numerous and excellently-maintained mountain restaurants, traditional ski huts or trendy snow bars offer plenty of charm and hospitality. Treat yourself to a break and enjoy magical moments on a sunny terrace with a panoramic view. If the weather isn’t kind to you, there are numerous indoor attractions in and around Adelboden. These include the Rex cinema and the Frutigen Tropic House. Additionally, the Heimatsmuseum (local heritage museum), the library and children’s recreation centre or the swimming pool in Frutigen are also worth a visit. The Adelboden Alpine school is made up of qualified mountain guides and their various tours and courses provide unparalleled outdoor adventures in the winter. As well as guided skiing and snowboarding tours, snow-shoe walks and overnight stays in igloos, winter attractions also include ice climbing, avalanche training and off-piste courses. The Swiss Ski and Snowboard School in Adelboden offers a wide selection of courses for children, teenagers and adults. In both summer and winter, “Incentive Adelboden” offers an exciting programme for groups and companies, tailored to their particular needs. 6 Tip The Sports and Leisure Arena Adelboden opened its doors on the 19th December 2010 and the ice sports hall in the middle of February 2011. Adelboden’s Arena is a new meeting place for adults and kids alike, for sports fans, the health conscious, for daredevils and those taking it a little easier! The sports arena is ideally situated at the entrance to the village and features a huge range of facilities at all times of the year: an ice sports hall for ice skating, ice hockey and ice stick shooting, a curling hall, a climbing hall, a bowling hall, bar, restaurant and meeting rooms. 7 ALPINEWELLNESS Adelboden Tourism Dorfstrasse 23 CH-3715 Adelboden Tel. +41 (0)33 673 80 80 Fax +41 (0)33 673 80 92 [email protected] www.adelboden.ch Frutigen Tourism Dorfstrasse 18 CH-3714 Frutigen Tel. +41 (0)33 671 14 21 Fax +41 (0)33 671 54 21 [email protected] www.frutigen-tourismus.ch 8 Kandertal Tourism Bahnhofstrasse CH-3718 Kandersteg Tel. +41 (0)848 00 48 00 [email protected] www.kandertal.travel The Kander Valley – Home of the Mountains In the Kander Valley you can experience the high Bernese Alps right up close. The snow-crowned peaks surround the valley and offer tempting activities, some of them relaxing, others a little more thrilling! In summer, you have the choice of mountain hikes, that come in varying degrees of difficulty, adventures on the via ferrata, or a try at mountain climbing. Waiting for you in the Kander Valley are not only the magnificent mountain peaks but also wild romantic natural scenery, the mountain lakes of the Unesco World Heritage Site, historic mountain passes, themed trails for the whole family, the steepest postbus route in the world and lots more. The Kander Valley is easily accessible with public or private transport; however, the valley has kept its typical Bernese Oberland character intact – in keeping with alpine culture. 9 Tip In Kandersteg’s Rope Park in the forest you get from one platform to the next by means of rope bridges, vines, nets, bridges and small cable cars. The park has four routes of varying degrees of difficulty – it is up to you to decide how thrilling it should be! A Magical Mountain World in Kandersteg In winter, the Kander Valley has all the fun in the snow; here you will find an extensive network of winter walking trails and snowshoe trails as well as the third largest cross-country ski area in Switzerland. Up to 60 km of classic and skating trails including the high trail at Sunnbüel are open daily. Toboggan runs and family-friendly ski areas in Kandersteg and the Kien Valley complete the picture. 10 Tip 6 km of illuminated cross-country ski trails allow you to ski until late in the evening (5.30 – 9pm). Ask for our special cross-country ski map for further information. 11 Kandertal Tourism Bahnhofstrasse CH-3718 Kandersteg Tel. +41 (0)848 00 48 00 [email protected] www.kandertal.travel 12 ® Lenk-Simmental Tourism Rawilstrasse 3 CH-3775 Lenk Tel. +41 (0)33 736 35 35 Fax +41 (0)33 733 20 27 [email protected] www.lenk-simmental.ch Alpine Culture in the Lenk-Simme Valley The Simme Valley is the home of the world famous Simmentaler spotted cow. Alpine culture, traditions, and customs are purposely cultivated here. The traditional Procession of Cows in St.Stephan and the Farmer’s Market in Boltigen always attract many visitors. Among the other highlights are the Lenk Culture Days in October, including a large Alpine Festival, a “Hornuss” tournament (an indigenous Swiss sport), and workshops which give visitors an insight into yodelling, alphorn playing, cheese-making etc. In summer, the Simme Valley is a valley of water and a walkers’ paradise. The source of the Simme River and the Iffig Waterfall are well-known beauty spots. Over 600 km of signposted walking trails lead from the valley bottom high up into the mountains near to the glaciers. Interesting adventure and themed walking trails turn walking into a playful experience – and not just for children. You can also reach the most beautiful spots of our holiday destination on the numerous bike routes. Lenk offers various attractions for families, such as children’s entertainment programmes, a marmot and lynx trail in summer as well as the Stoss children’s world in winter. In autumn 2011, a new adventure, play and meeting venue is due to open by the Lenkerseeli Lake. An alp will be reproduced, covering an area of 8000 m2. Here visitors will be encouraged to actively discover its numerous play features, which are created from natural materials. In this way, children and adults who are young-at-heart will gain an understanding of traditional and modern ways of life in Alpine and mountain farming. In addition, the Simme valley offers many attractions that focus on Alpine culture, such as sleeping on the mountain, working on the farm, visits to Alpine establishments and Alpine cheese dairies or Alpine wellness. 13 Winter Sports Arena and Cultural Highlights Together Lenk and Adelboden form the “Adelboden-Lenk ...dänk!” winter sports arena. The area comprises 72 lifts and 210 km of pistes. Beginners love the wide runs while bolder skiers can take advantage of challenging descents. Families appreciate the manageable ski area with the Stoss children’s world and the ski schools on the Betelberg. In addition, the snowboard and boarder-cross parks; toboggan runs, crosscountry trails, and marked snowshoe routes through unspoilt natural surroundings offer variety for all winter sports lovers. Countless restaurants, cosy mountain huts and snow bars invite guests to linger and enjoy themselves. The travelling stage for culture and events, DAS ZELT, is particularly enjoyable and in the winter there are also performances in Lenk. Well-known artists from all over Switzerland present top-class comedy interludes, shows and concerts. In the summer, strains of jazz and classical music fill the air in the Simme valley; international greats play at the Lenk Jazz Days in a relaxed open-air atmosphere and music teachers and students from all over the world demonstrate their talent in concerts during the International Summer Music Academy. 14 Tip The Simme Valley’s agricultural roots have always characterised the valley. A visit to a farming family allows an interesting glimpse into this world and everyday life on a farm – and is popular with guests of all ages. Several farms in the Simme Valley offer guided visits. The Museum Pass is at your disposal for visits to the many castles and museums around Lake Thun. On Europe’s most beautiful lake stage, the Musical “Gotthelf” will be performed for the first time. In Thun, many events have been organised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Kleist, who wrote the work “Den zerbrochenen Krug” here. From 16th –19th June the Bollywood-Festival will take place followed by the International Barrel Organ Festival on 16th –17th July. Our partners, Niesen, Niederhorn, Stockhorn, as well as the Ships Company on Lake Thun have come up with a number of attractive special offers and ideas for excursions. For team and group activities such as Tipi Magic with drinks, a Native Indian meal and overnight stay, or a snow play, bridge-building or abseiling, just contact Falkevent who will organise the perfect event for you. The mountain specialists at the Alpine School Bergfalke can arrange freeride-ski and snowboard tours, ice climbing, snow-shoe adventures, climbing, glacier trekking and via ferratas, all in the local area. In the holiday villages around Lake Thun, guests can enjoy all sorts of performances such as open-air plays, classical and folklore concerts, themed guided tours, and sports events. For sports fans, there are plenty of ways to pass the time: sailing, diving, swimming, wind surfing, tennis, minigolf or discovering the region by the many marked hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes. The less energetic can hire an electric bike for a less strenuous trip. 17 Culture and Nature on Lake Thun The Lake Thun region offers a combination of city charm and natural wonders. In the morning you can stroll around the picturesque old town of Thun and, in the afternoon, immerse yourself in the magical mountain world. Lovely hills but also steep peaks surround Lake Thun. The area is ideal for hiking and cycling. Those who like to take it a bit easier can just take the cable car or funicular to the summit and enjoy the wonderful views from there. The glistening surface of the lake will tempt you to take to the water. Here sports fans will certainly get their money’s worth, as will day trippers enjoying a relaxing trip on a ship. Cultural events in Thun regularly attract visitors from near and far. On one of Europe’s most beautiful lake stages, exhilarating musicals are performed each summer. However, the Lake Thun region also includes pretty villages along the lake and in the hills, characterised by traditional wooden houses that are typical of the character of the whole Bernese Oberland region. 18 Tip Nature, tradition and the modern age live harmoniously together in Thun. The largest city in the Bernese Oberland has attractions for every kind of weather: perhaps a visit to Castle Hill, the fairytale castle of Schadau, the wonderful parks along the shores of the lake or the historic Thun Panorama – and, of course, the incomparable natural surroundings of Lake Thun and the Alps. 19 Thunersee Tourism Railway Station CH-3600 Thun Tel. +41 (0)842 842 111 Fax +41 (0)33 251 00 88 [email protected] www.thunersee.ch Special Moments: www.bernerob Wetterhorn 3701 m Schreckhorn 4078 m Finsteraarhorn 4274 m Eiger 3970 m Mönch 4099 m Jungfrau 4158 m Jungfraujoch 3454 m Lauberhorn 2472 m Kleine Scheidegg Männlichen 2343 m Stechelberg 24 13 Faulhorn 2681 m Wengen Grindelwald 26 Axalphorn 2308 m Lauterbrunnen Meiringen 20 22 Schynige Platte 2100 m Axalp Zweilütschinen Giessbachfälle 18 Ballenberg Kienholz Wilderswil 58 Giessbach Schwanden Brienzer Rothorn 2350 m Rothorn Kulm 12 21 Heimwehfluh Bönigen Iseltwald 29 54 Brienzersee 14 15 Brienz Matten Ebligen Niederried Oberried Ringgenberg Golf 18h 76 Goldswil 57 28 Interlaken 75 Unterseen Harder Kulm Augstmatthorn 1362 m Tannhorn 2221 m 20 Habkern Hohgant 2197 m 59 Inner-Eriz Kemmeriboden Bad Schrattenfluh Bumbach Schangnau Excursions 22 Schallenberg Events /Sport 40 1 BLS Ships Lake Thun and Lake Brienz 24 17 The Tropic House Frutigen 36 31 Lake Thun Plays, Thun 2 Lake Thun-Beatenberg-Niederhorn 25 18 Openair Museum Ballenberg, Brienz 36 32 Falkevent, Thun 42 19 Nature Reserve Lake Thun-Hohgant 37 33 Alpine School Bergfalke, Thun 42 Mountain Transport 41 3 Stockhorn Cable Car PLC, Erlenbach 26 20 Aare Gorge, Meiringen 37 34 Sigriswil Teddy Bear Festival 43 4 Niesen Funicular PLC, Mülenen 27 21 Ballenberg Steam Train, Brienz 37 35 International Barrel Organ Festival, Thun 43 5 St. Beatus Caves, Sundlauenen 29 22 Mountain Transport Meiringen Hasliberg 37 36 Thun Tourism 43 6 Foxtrail, Thun 29 23 Mountain Transport Elsigenalp 38 7 Diemtig Valley in summer (The Grimmimutz Path) 30 24 Schilthorn Cable Car 38 8 Diemtig Valley in winter 30 25 Heliswiss Switzerland, Belp 38 9 Spiez Marketing PLC 31 26 Grindelwald-Pfingstegg Cable Car 38 10 Observatory and Planetarium SIRIUS, Schwanden 32 27 Hilterfingen-Hünibach-Oberhofen Tourism 39 11 Schwanden-Tschingel-Ringoldswil Tourism 32 28 Outdoor Interlaken 39 12 Brienz Rothorn Mountain Railway 33 29 Heimwehfluh, Interlaken 39 13 Grindelwald – Männlichen Cable Car 33 30 Mountainflyers Helicopter, Belp 39 14 JungfrauPark Interlaken 34 15 Brienz Tourism 34 16 Kandersteg 35 erland.travel Breithorn 3782 m Blümlisalp 3664 m Doldenhorn Balmhorn Altels 3643 m 3709 m 3629 m Wildstrubel 3243 m Wildhorn 3248 m Schilthorn 2970 m Mürren 16 Kandersteg Adelboden 23 56 37 Lenk Morgenberghorn 2249 m St. Stephan Frutigen 17 Kiental 7 Niesen 2362 m 8 Gstaad 60 km v.
