Slattery’s is South Florida’s Newest Best Kept Secret
By Ian Drew
Slattery’s Irish Restaurant and Public
House is one of the few absolutely perfect
dining experiences in South Florida.
Don’t let the exterior fool you. This is a
five-star restaurant in a traditional Irish pub
setting.
Everything about Slattery’s is
authentically Irish. In good old Ireland, the
pub is the center of the community. The lowkey lighting, comfortable dining room and
festive bar area of Slattery’s make it the
perfect candidate to be such a center for the
diverse Wilton Manors community
neighborhood, and anyone else who feels
like dropping by. This is a place where
everyone knows your name and, if they
don’t, they certainly will by the time you
leave.
Slattery’s accents its own charm with
nightly drink specials and entertainment to
match. Sundays feature a traditional roast
dinner with live Irish music, while Saturday
nights feature a live DJ.
The rough exterior is really just a front.
Slattery’s co-owner Damien Mathers says
that while the pub crowd is educated,
accepting and diverse, the dining crowd is
mostly comprised of gay devotees. Just
because there is not a rainbow or a pink
triangle on the door (and, let’s face it, it
would be a crime to de-authenticate the
atmosphere by adding them) does not mean
that the experience isn’t enjoyed by all.
Slattery’s state-of-the-art draft
equipment at the bar serves up the best
Guinness in town (only $2.99 all day, every
Q6
day) and the restaurant offers an elite
selection of hard cider that is the perfect
alternative to beer and wine.
The menu combines the best of Irish fare
with the top dishes of a renowned kitchen
such as the Ritz Carlton.
The soups are delicate and sublime.
Chef Thomas Devlin doesn’t throw in a lot
of superfluous extras to overcomplicate his
mixtures, with the famous potato and leek
soup (cup - $2.25) actually tasting
like…well, potato and leeks. The carrot and
ginger soup offers the perfectly divided
mixture of both main ingredients.
For appetizers, the Chicken Liver Parfait
($6.00), which is studded with pistachio nuts
and served with a raspberry tinged
Cumberland sauce, holds up to the best of
Parisian goose liver pate.
The main entrees offer a taste of heaven
for any palette. The traditional Irish stew
($8.50) features savory chunks of fresh lamb
cooked in a rich broth with carrots, onions,
celery, potato and Slattery’s fresh rosemary,
which also beautifully accents the mashed
potatoes that compliments many of the
dishes.
The Portrush pork chops ($9.50) are
grilled to perfection and smothered in a
unique rosemary cider sauce, and served
with potatoes and vegetables. This is food
as art combined with portions that will easily
fill even the largest stomachs and leave room
for leftovers.
Also to be relished is Slattery’s
homemade Shepherd’s Pie ($7.75), featuring
lean ground beef with freshly prepared

Chef Mark McCormack serves up pints of Guiness at Slattery’s
garden vegetables cooked in a rich beef stock
and topped with fluffy mashed potatoes, and
the fresh snapper topped with potato slices
and served with rosemary mashed potatoes
and fresh broccoli.
For dessert, Slattery’s continues to
amaze. The restaurant offers a homemade
apple crumble ($4.25) served with calvados
cinnamon custard, a chocolate fudge cake
($4.95) topped with vanilla bean ice cream
and fresh mint, and New York style
cheesecake ($4.95) with raspberry coulis and
fresh homemade cream.
Slattery’s is Wilton Manors’ best kept
secret. The authentic Irish menu is served
between noon and 10pm daily, with the bar
staying open until the wee hours.
Slattery’s also offers daily $5.95 lunch
specials, featuring a rotating menu of such
savorous items as lamb and beef casserole
cooked in red wine and garlic, traditional
tuna melts and Cajun mahi mahi.
Slattery’s is authentic cuisine at its finest,
playing off of tradition and using it to create
an uncommonly exceptional culinary niche.
Slattery’s Irish Restaurant and Public
House is located at 1015 NE 26th Street in
Wilton Manors, right off of the 5-points
