Velkomen til Oldedalen
Frå Norskehavet sør om Stad strekkjer Nordfjorden seg
inn i landet og deler seg i tre greiner inst under brefjella
i Jotunheimen. Oldedalen som strekkjer seg 20 km innover i fjellheimen, er ei forlenging av den sørlegaste av
desse fjordarmane. Omkransa av stupbratte fjellsider,
kvite fossefall og glitrande isbrear, blinkar det langstrakte
Oldevatnet i dalbotnen og speglar av ein natur som av
mange er omtalt som Noregs vakraste.
Overklasseturistar, særleg frå England, fann tidleg vegen
til Olden. Alt på 1800-talet la dei vakre turistskipa seg i
fjorden og frakta sitt celebre reisefylgje til lands, og inn
til det store trekkplasteret: Briksdalsbreen inst i tverrdalen Briksdal. Vegen hit inn er ei oppleving i seg sjølv;
du passerar fleire fantastiske fossefall og brearmar av
Jostedalsbreen, mellom anna Brenndalsbreen, og Melkevollbreen som ligg til endes for øvste Oldevatnet.
I dag har bøndene i dalen utvikla eit reiselivstilbod du
knapt finn maken til nokon stad. På fleire velstelte campingplassar og vakre gardstun kan du smake på norsk
tradisjonsmat, prøve deg som bonde med langorv og
rive, bli med på bre- og fjellvandring, oppleve spaninga
med buldring, delta i raftingflåte på Briksdalsvatnet, ta
deg ut i aktivitetsparkar - eller kva med ein rotur med
fiskestang på Oldevatnet? Eller nyte naturen frå dekkssalongen om bord i MB ”Olden”?
I denne guiden vil du finne informasjon om båtskyss på

From the Norwegian Sea south of West Cape, the Nordfjord cuts its way into the landscape and divides into
three arms beneath the glaciers in the mountains of Jotunheimen. Oldedalen which stretches 20 km in through
the mountains is an extension of the southernmost of
these fjord arms. Surrounded by perpendicular mountainsides, white waterfalls and sparkling glaciers, the
long and narrow Oldevatn lake twinkles in the valley bottom and reflects scenery that many have called the most
beautiful in Norway.
Wealthy upper class tourists, especially from England,
long ago found their way to Olden. As early as the 19th
century the majestic tourist ships anchored up in the
fjord and transported their distinguished guests ashore
and up towards the greatest of all attractions: the Briksdal Glacier at the end of the Briksdal valley. The road
here is an experience in itself: you pass several fantastic
waterfalls and glacier arms of the major Jostedal Glacier,
among others the Brenndal Glacier and the Melkevoll
Glacier that lies at the end of the lake.
Today the farmers in the valley have developed a tourist
programme that is quite unique. At a number of wellkept campsites and attractive farmyards, you can taste
traditional Norwegian food, try your hand at haymaking
with the long-handled scythe and rake, hike across the
glaciers and mountains, climb steep rock faces, paddle
a rubber dinghy on the Briksdal lake, expend your energy in the activity parks or what about a quiet trip with
rod and line in a rowboat on the Oldevatn lake? Or just
simply soak in the beauty of the scenery from the saloon
deck onboard MB Olden?
In this guide you will find information about boat trips on
the Oldevatn lake, transport up to the Briksdal Glacier in
small battery-driven golf cars, the campsites all the way
along the valley, as well as places offering activities, fishing, experiences and farm visits.
All the places mentioned here are to be found on the
map on page 2. We extend you a warm welcome to some
of the best that Norwegian tourism has to offer.

Briksdalsbreen og dei vakre fossane
Den storslagne Briksdalsbreen i Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalpark har i over 100 år vore den mest besøkte isbreen
i Noreg, eit definitivt høgdepunkt for mang ein turist som
gjestar landet vårt.
På veg gjennom Oldedalen til Briksdal vil du sjå eit u-tal
vakre, ville fossefall. Disse er avmerka på kartet. Gytrifossen, Nelkjifossen, Yrifossen, Kvamsfossen, Rustøyfossen, Høgalmefossen, Volefossen, Svadåna, Briksdalsfossen og Tjøtabreelva.
The spectacular Briksdal Glacier in the Jostedal Glacier
National Park has for over 100 years been the most visited glacier in Norway, an indisputable highlight for many
a tourist who is visiting our country.
On your way through the Oldedalen valley to the glacier,
you will see a host of wild and wonderful waterfalls cascading down the mountainsides. They are all marked on
the map: Gytrifossen, Nelkjifossen, Yrifossen, Kvamsfossen, Rustøyfossen, Høgalmefossen, Volefossen, Svadåna,
Briksdalsfossen and Kjøtabreelva.

MB ”Olden” på Oldevatnet

I 1893 gjekk den første dampbåten, ”Victoria”, i rute
over Oldevatnet med turistar som skulle oppleve vakre
Oldedalen og Briksdalsbreen. Seinare var det fleire båtar i trafikk fram til avviklinga i 1981. Den tradisjonsrike båtturen vart re-lansert i 2005 med MB ”Olden” i
trafikken. Dette er ein moderne og godt utstyr båt med
stort soldekk. MB ”Olden” går i chartertrafikk og fylgjer
den gamle ruta frå Eide til Rustøen. Båten kan stoppe
fleire stadar langs vatnet. MB ”Olden” har serveringsog skjenkeløyve.
Triveleg campingplass som ligg vakkert til ved Oldevatnet,
omkransa av brear og høge fjell med fine fossefall. Panoramautsikt mot Melkevollbreen. Her er plass til ca 50
einingar og 3 hytter. Leikeplass med trampoliner og ballplass. Grillhus og lavvo. Ferske rundstykker og brød kvar
dag. Internett. Tilrettelagt for tømming av caravan og bubil.
Gratis utlån av båtar til våre gjester. Gode fiskemuligheiter.
Godt utgangspunkt for fotturar i fjell, skog og mark, guida
breturar. Vertskapet legg stor vekt på service og reinhald.
In 1893 the first steamboat, Victoria, plied the route
across the lake with tourists who wanted to experience
the beauty of the Oldedalen valley and the Briksdal Glacier. Later various other boats have plied the same route
until the service was terminated in 1981. This boat trip
that smacks of so much tradition was re-opened in
2005 using MB Olden, a modern, well-equipped vessel
with a large sundeck. MB Olden is a charter service
and runs along the age-old route from Eide to Rustøen,
calling at a number of places along the lake. MB Olden
serves meals and has a licensed bar.
A delightful campsite that is beautifully situated on the
shore of the Oldevatn lake, surrounded by glaciers and
high peaks with magnificent waterfalls. A panorama view
of the Melkevoll Glacier. 3 cabins and room for 50 tents,
motor homes and caravans. Playground with trampolines
and football pitch. Barbecue area and traditional Lapp
tent. Freshly baked rolls and bread daily. Internet connections. Facilities for waste disposal from caravans and
mobile homes. Boats available free to our guests. Good
fishing. Ideal starting point for walks in the mountains
and countryside, walks with a guide on the glacier. The
hosts really emphasise service and cleanliness.

Gryta Camping
Du finn Gryta camping midt mellom Olden sentrum og
Briksdalen, idyllisk plassert ved vatnet med utsikt til
to av isbreane som omgir dalen. Dette er ein stad for
”verkelig” ferie.
På campingplassen er det 5 nybygde hytter med god
standard. Her er ca 80 plassar for telt, bubilar og campingvogner. Her finn du mini-dyrepark med geiter og
ponnyar, leikeplass for dei unge og stort opphaldsrom
med TV. Utlån av robåtar til den som vil freiste fiskelukka på vatnet. Gryta camping har breiband og internettkafé. Vertskapet formidlar tur- og aktivitetstilbod i
området. Campingplassen vart opna i 1993, og vann i
1996 prisen for beste campingplass i Noreg.

Gryta Camping, idyllic spot beside the lake with views of
the two glaciers that surround the valley. This is the place
for a ‘real’ holiday. The site offers 5 new cabins with a
good standard and room for 80 tents, mobile homes and
caravans. There is a mini zoo with goats and ponies, a
playground for the little ones, a lounge with a TV. Hire of
rowboats if you want to try your luck fishing on the lake.
Gryta Camping has broadband and Internet connections.
The hosts know everything there is to know about the opportunities for trips and activities in the area. The campsite opened in 1993, and in 1996 won the award for the
best campsite in Norway.

Oldevatn Camping
Campingplassen ligg idyllisk til ved Oldevatnet, omkransa av fjell og brear.
I resepsjonsbygget har du tilgang til opphaldsrom med
TV og internett. Plassen er frå 2003 klassifisert med
fire stjerner. Her er både enkle hytter med kjøleskåp
og kokeplater og litt større hytter med dusj, toalett og
TV. Leikeplass for dei minste, samt trampoline og volleyballnett. Kiosk med nysteikte brød og rundstykke.
Her er og eit utval daglegvarer i tillegg til servering av
hamburger/pølser.
Oldevatnet er kjent som eit godt fiskevatn med aure
og røye. Sal av fiskekort og fiskeutstyr i kiosken. Gratis
utlån av båtar, kanoar og syklar til gjestene. Utleige av
trøbåt. Oldevatn Camping er eit fint utgangspunkt for
turar i Nordfjord.

This 4-star campsite is idyllically situated beside the Oldevatn lake, with mountains and glaciers on all sides. In
the reception building you will find a lounge with a TV
and Internet facilities. The site offers basic cabins with
a fridge and hotplates and larger cabins with a shower,
WC and TV. Playground for the young ones, as well as
trampoline and volleyball net. Kiosk with groceries, fresh
bread, rolls, burgers and hot dogs.
Oldevatn lake is well known for its fishing for trout and
char. Sale of fishing permits and tackle at the kiosk. Free
loan of boats, canoes and bicycles for our guests. Hire of
peddleboats. Oldevatn Camping is an ideal starting point
for trips around the Nordfjord region.

Yrineset
På Yrineset ved Oldevatnet har vertskapet Dagrun og
Svein Yri bygt opp eit fantastisk opplevingsområde, basert på nærleiken til vatnet og naturen rundt. Yrineset
kan ta imot grupper opp til 100 personar for servering
og aktivitetar. Vertskapet hjelper til med å skaffe matservering og underholdning etter ynskje. Mat og opphald på Yrineset må bestillast på førehand. Yrineset kan
tilby avkopling frå stress og ei god naturoppleving. Ved
bålet kan du nyte ekte bålkaffi til fuglesong og fossedur.
Ved Yrielva kan vi kaste med not, ein underhaldande
fiskeaktivitet som tek ca 20 minutt. På grillområdet kan
fangsten tilberedast og bli servert. Eigen kaiplass til båten som trafikkerar på Oldevatnet.
Frå Yrineset kan ein ta spaserturen opp til dei gamle
setrane på Yri og nyte den fine utsikta over Oldedalen
frå sætrevollen.
On Yrineset beside the Oldevatn lake and based on
proximity to the lake and the surrounding countryside,
mine hosts Dagrun and Svein Yri have built up a fantastic experience centre which can accommodate up to
100 persons. The hosts assist in providing food and entertainment to suit your taste. Stay and food has to be
booked in advance. Yrineset offers relaxation and a real
experience of the great outdoors. Round the campfire
you can enjoy the flavour of genuine camp coffee to the
accompaniment of birdsong and the roar of the waterfalls. In the river we can throw the nets, an entertaining way to fish that takes about 20 minutes, and then
afterwards prepare and serve your catch in the barbecue
area. Own jetty for the boat that plies the lake.
From Yrineset you can walk up to the old summer farms
at Yri and enjoy the wonderful views across the lake.

Trollbu, Aabrekk Gard
Ved foten av Brenndalsbreen ligg idylliske Trollbu og
Aabrekk Gard. Her blir det servert tradisjonsrik gardsmat framstilt som i gode, gamle dagar, det meste framstilt på garden. Her kan du oppleve dyra på garden i
sitt rette element, og bu i vakkert restaurerte hus frå
17- og 1800 talet. Kapasiteten er 24 sengeplassar og
90 plassar for servering. Frå Aabrekk Gard går det veg
opp til ein av dei mindre kjende brearmane til Jostedalsbreen, Brenndalsbreen. Denne brearmen ligg fint til
inst i Brenndalen. Storslått utsyn over vakre Oldedalen.
At the foot of the Briksdal Glacier lies the idyllic Trollbu
and Aabrekk Farm, which serves traditional farm food
prepared just like in the old days, most of it produced
on the farm. You can experience the animals on the farm
in their proper element, and stay in tastefully renovated
buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. They sleep
24 and we can serve meals for up to 90 guests. From
Aabrekk Farm there is a road up to one of the lesser
known arms of the main Jostedal Glacier, the Brenndal
Glacier, beautifully situated innermost in the valley with
magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

Melkevoll Bretun
Øvst i Oldedalen, i svingen som tek deg opp siste kneika
til Briksdal, ligg Melkevoll Bretun. Her er campingplass
med oppstillingsplasser for campingvogner, bubilar og
telt i tillegg til utleige av hytter, og parkeringsplassar
for dagsbesøkande til Briksdalsbreen. Terrenget på
sjølve plassen er utforma etter ein ”land art”-ide der
naturen sjølv har stått modell. På bretunet finn ein òg
eit av landets beste buldre-/klatrefelt. Og ikkje minst: I
den store steinura finn du kopi av ein steinalderbustad,
den såkalla ”steinalderhola”. Her tek vi imot grupper på
inntil 50 personar. For grupper tilbyr vi natur- og kulturguiding. Utsiktskvalitetane er svært spesielle: I aust
lyser Briksdalsbreen, i syd Melkevollbreen, i vest buldrar Volefossen nedetter fjellsida og mot nord har ein
utsikt over vakre Oldedalen og Oldevatnet. Melkevoll
Bretun ligg like ved grensa til Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalpark og er utgangspunkt for mange merka turstiar
i nasjonalparken.
I resepsjonen møter du guidane frå Olden Aktiv. Dei tek
deg med på guida blåistur på Brenndalsbreen eller andre fjell- og breturar i nasjonalparken.

At the far end of the valley, on the bend in the road that
takes you up the final short steep hill up to the Briksdal valley, lies Melkevoll Bretun, with a campsite with
facilities for caravans, mobile homes and tents as well
as cabins for hire, and a parking lot for visitors who have
come just for the day to see the Briksdal Glacier. The
site itself is modelled on the original landscape, and offers one of the country’s best spots for buldring. And not
least: in the huge scree slope you will find a reconstruction of a Stone Age dwelling. In this establishment we
can accommodate groups up to 50 persons. For groups
we offers nature- and culture guidings. The views are
spectacular in every direction: to the east the Briksdal
Glacier, to the south the Melkevoll Glacier, in the west the
Volefoss waterfall cascades down the mountainside and
to the north the Oldedalen valley stretches out in all its
beauty. Melkevoll Bretun lies on the edge of the Jostedal
Glacier National Park and is the perfect place to start
many a walk along the signposted footpaths in the park.
Olden Aktiv
Olden Aktiv tilbyr breføring på Brenndalsbreen. Daglege
avgangar kl 10:00 og 11:00 frå juni til august. Oppmøte på Melkevoll Bretun 15 minutt før avgang. Turen
varer 6-7 timar medrekna 2,5 timar på isen. Ta med
eigna kle, matpakke og drikke. Minimumsalder 12 år.
Pris kr 600,- pr person inklusiv breutstyr. Fjellstøvlar
kan leigast for kr 30,-.
Olden Aktiv har også topptur til Lodalskåpa.
Olden Aktiv offers guided tours on the Brenndal Glacier. Daily departures at 10.00 am and 11.00 am from
June - August. Meeting point at Melkevoll Bretun 15
minutes prior to departure. The trip takes 6-7 hours
including 2.5 hours on the glacier. Bring suitable clothing, a packed lunch and plenty to drink. Minimum age
12 years.
Price NOK 600 per person including glacier equipment.

Oldedalen Skyss
Oldedalen Skyss har i meir enn 100 år frakta turistar
til og frå Briksdalsbreen. Den tradisjonrike turen med
hest og kjerre vart i 2003 erstatta av tryggare transport
med ”Trollbilar”.
Turen med bilane tek ca. 20 min kvar veg, med ein
pause ved breen på 45 min. På den vakre Kleivavegen
går turen forbi Briksdalsfossen og vidare i svingar opp
mot endestasjonen Kleivane. Utsikta undervegs er fantastisk! Lett sti frå Kleivane og inn i Nasjonalparken til
den namngjetne Briksdalsbreen.
Oldedalen Skyss har i dag 10 bilar som er i bruk i transporten og stiller med ein kapasitet på 70 personar pr.
avgang.
Oldedalen Skyss has for more than 100 years transported tourists to and from the Briksdal Glacier. The traditional trip in pony and trap was in 2003 replaced by
safer transport in ‘Trollbilar’, battery-driven golf cars that
do the journey in 20 minutes each way, with a stop at the
glacier of about 45 minutes. As the track winds its way
up the valley it crosses the bridge over the spectacular
Briksdalsfossen waterfall and offers fantastic views as it
climbs to the final stop at Kleivane, from where there is
an easy footpath to the very edge of the glacier in the
national park.
Oldedalen Skyss has today 10 such small vehicles with a
total capacity of 70 passengers per departure.

Briksdal Breføring
Briksdal Breføring er det største aktivitetsselskapet i
området og har spesialisert seg på naturbaserte aktivitetar som brevandring, fjellturar, bresafari og toppturar
på breplatået.
I 2004 stod aktivitetsparken i Briksdalen ferdig, med eit
mangfald av aktivitetar: 13 meter høgt klatretårn med
svevebane og balansebru, paintball, vikingbowling, bogeskyting, øksekasting mm.
Vi arrangerer dagleg turar på brear og fjell, mellom anna
til Bødalsbreen og Lodalskåpa, med base på Sande Camping i Lodalen. På Lovatnet driv vi med kanoturar.
Ny aktivitet i 2007 er ekspedisjon på vatnet framfor
Briksdalsbreen. Her kan du bli med på padletur i raftingbåt mellom drivande ”isfjell” inn mot den mektige
brearmen. Briksdal Breføring driv òg brevandring på
Brenndalsbreen.
Briksdal Breføring is the largest activity company in the
area and has specialised in outdoor activities such as
glacier guiding, mountain walks, glacier safaris and hikes
to the icecap and glacier plateau. In 2004 the activity
park was completed and offers a variety of activities: a
13­ metre high climbing tower with abseiling and a rope
bridge, paintball, Viking bowling, archery, axe­ throwing, to
name but a few. We organise daily trips up glaciers and
mountains, among others to Bødal Glacier and Lodalskåpa, from the base at Sande Camping in the Lodalen
valley. Canoe trips are organised on the Lovatnet lake.
A new activity in 2007 is an expedition on the lake at
the foot of the Briksdal Glacier, where you can paddle in
large rubber dinghies among drifting ‘icebergs’ in to the
very edge of the huge glacier tongue. Briksdal Breføringalso arrange glacierguiding on the Brenndal Glacier.

Briksdalsbre Fjellstove som ligg i sjølve Briksdalen har
i generasjonar vore eigd og driven av familien Briksdal.
I Fjellstova har vi bygd ein topp moderne kafeteria og
spisesalar for 600 gjester. Her kan den reisande velje
i ein rikhaldig meny av varme, så vel som kalde rettar. Reinsdyrsteik, fjellaure og stadens salatrettar er
populære. I souvenirsenteret i nabohuset tilbyr vi eit
utval kvalitets-souvenirar du neppe venta å finne i
den spesielle eventyrverda i Briksdalen. Dei fleste typar kredittkort er gangbare og du kan handle Tax Free
om du skal utanlands. Fjellstova har ei hytte til utleige
og 6 doble rom med hotellstandard i underetasjen på
souvenirsenteret. I grillhytta ”Nakkjestova” ved aktivitetsaparken, tilbyr vi grillmenyar til grupper og lag som
ynskjer uteservering.
Briksdalsbre Fjellstove (mountain lodge), which lies in the
Briksdalen valley itself, has for generations been owned
and run by the Briksdal family, and is now a modern
cafeteria with dining rooms for up to 600 guests. Here
visit-ors can choose from a comprehensive menu of both
hot and cold meals. Reindeer steaks, mountain trout and
our special salads are all popular choices. In the souvenir
centre next door we offer a selection of quality souvenirs
that you had never expected to find in the fairytale world
of the Briksdalen valley. We accept the majority of credit
cards and you can shop Tax Free if you are travelling
abroad. The mountain lodge has a cabin to let and 6
double rooms with hotel standard in the basement of the
souvenir centre. In the barbecue shelter ‘Nakkjestova’ in
the activity park we can serve barbecue menus to groups
that prefer to eat in the open air.

Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalpark
Jostedalsbreen er den største isbreen på det europeiske fastlandet, men Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalpark
har òg mange andre store og mindre brear. Isbreane er
naturlaboratorium, særleg for klimaendringar, geologi
og vegetasjon/planteliv. Brerørslene er med på å stadig endre landskapet i parken. Smeltevatn frå isbreane
renn saman og samlar seg i breelvar som fossar i kåte
kast nedetter bratte fjellsider mot vatn og sjø - ein av
dei unike kvalitetane ved Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalpark.
Nasjonalparken varierer frå frodige dalar til alpine fjell
og arktisk klima. Kjernen av nasjonalparken er urørd
natur som berre kan nåast til fots. Inn mot breane er eit
interessant kulturlandskap, framleis i bruk til landbruk
og beiting. Noko av det mest spesielle med Jostedalsbreen i gamle dagar, var slektskapet og samhaldet mellom bygdene på kvar side av breen. Dei gamle ferdselsvegane kryssa breen.
7 kommunar har område i nasjonalparken, som ligg
mellom to av dei lengste fjordane i verda, Sognefjorden
og Nordfjorden. Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalpark vart oppretta i 1991 og dekkjer eit område på 1310 km2.
Dei reisande som vitjar Briksdalsbreen får kjøpe eit offisielt bevis/sertifikat som synar at dei har besøkt ein av
Noregs mest attraktive nasjonalparkar. Dette eksklusive
sertifikatet er utarbeidt i samråd med Nasjonalparkmyndigheitene, og vert berre selt ved innfallsporten
til Nasjonalparken. Samstundes med at ein får eit fint
minne frå turen, går ein viss prosent av salssummen
til arbeid med utvikling og tilrettelegging av Nasjonalparken. Sertifikatet få du kjøpt på alle turiststadar i
Oldedalen.
The Jostedal Glacier is the largest glacier on the European mainland, but the Jostedal Glacier National Park
can also boast many other large and small glaciers. The
glaciers are nature’s own laboratory, especially when it
comes to climate change, geology and vegetation/flora.
The movement of the glaciers means that the landscape
in the park is undergoing constant change. The melt
water from the glaciers joins forces and becomes glacial rivers that cascade down the steep mountainsides
towards the lakes and sea below - one of the unique
qualities of the Jostedal Glacier National Park. The national park offers huge variety, from lush green valleys to
alpine mountains and an Arctic climate, with the heart of
the park consisting of untouched nature that can only be
reached on foot. In towards the glaciers are areas of interesting cultural landscape, still in use today for farming
and grazing. One of the most characteristic features of
the Jostedal Glacier in the old days was the kinship and
solidarity between the communities linked by the glacier
and how ancient tracks criss­crossed the glacier from one
side to the other.
7 municipalities share sections of the national park,
which lies between two of the longest fjords in the world,
Sognefjorden and Nordfjorden. The Jostedal Glacier National Park was established in 1991 and covers an area
of 1310 km².
