RECORDS OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH,* NEWTOWN
(NOW ELMHURST), QUEENS COUNTY, LONG ISLAND, N. Y.
"The Newtown Presbyterian Church was founded in 1652, in which year
the settlement afterwards known as Newtown Village was commenced.
This name was changed in, about, 1895 to the present name of Elmhurst.
The church was at its inception Congregational in form of government and
all its affairs were considered in public town meeting and recorded, if recorded
at all, in the town records. It was not until the pastorate of the Rev. Samuel
Pumroy that this manner of conducting the affairs of the church ceased and the
Presbyterian form of government was instituted.
Samuel Pumroy commenced his pastorate in 1708. In 1715 he became a
member of the Presbytery of Philadelphia and from that time the Newtown
Church gradually assumed the Presbyterian form of government though it
was not until 1724 that there was a regularly elected session. In that year
three ruling elders, Content Titus, James Renne and Samuel Coe, were
elected, and from that date, June 28, 1724, this religious body became a
fully created Presbyterian Church.
The records of baptisms, marriages and deaths commenced with the baptisms in 1727, the marriages in 1709 and the deaths in 1728. Previous to the
pastorate of Mr. Pumroy no such records were kept, or at least none are now
in existence. In these records some years are entirely missing while in many
others the entries are very meagre.
During the entire Revolutionary period no records were kept, the church
edifice was destroyed by the British and the congregation scattered. No records of the period from 18IO to 1819, which includes the pastorate of the Rev.
William Boardman, can now be found; either there were none kept or they have
been lost.
In transcribing these records the spelling in the original church books has
been strictly followed. The same name is often spelled in different ways, as
for instance the name Riker is given as Rick in the older records and that of
L.everich is spelled as Leveridge, Leverick, Leverdge and other variations.
The names of colored people are copied mainly as a curiosity as the lack
of surnames make them worthless as far as any genealogical research is concerned. Slavery existed in the town until nearly the middle of the last century
and the slaves in many instances took the names of their masters. The negroes
were as a rule kindly used. The fact that the forms of baptism and marriage
were generally observed by them speaks well for the morals of the times.
I hereby certify that to my best knowledge and belief I have made a complete copy of the vital records of the Newtown Presbyterian Church located at
Elmhurst, L. I.
Whenever the ceremony of marriage or baptism has been performed outside of the town of Newtown, it is so noted, and when no locality is given it is
understood that it was performed within the town.
To the best of my belief these transcriptions are a faithful copy of the

original records.
* The copy of the Vital Records of the Newtown, Long Island, N. Y., Presbyterian
Church from which this article was transcribed was made for the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society by. Arthur White of Elmhurst, Long Island, N. Y.,
who had access to these records. The Society was unable to obtain access to the original
records themselves and: therefore engaged Mr. White to make a copy of them for the
Society. The introductory remarks are written by Arthur White, the transcriber. At
the time the copy was made the records were in the possession of the present church
body and in a good state of preservation.
