Len here from Father and Son Hunting (FSHunting.com) on June 22, 2015. In the spring of 2014 I posted a report on our website that was a personal evaluation of how local wildlife populations had fared over the winter of 2013/2014. In the article I gave my interpretation of the net effect on wildlife from changing agricultural practices that have evolved throughout my lifetime (63 years to date) in the Maitland River and Bayfield River watersheds. Recent rainfall in the past two weeks (10+ inches) and a close look at the damage it inflicted incents me to revisit that article and share part of it with you. Paul Simon’s well-known 1977 song above seems an appropriate title. addressed by human innovation (at its finest); conservation tillage and especially ‘no-till’ farming practices began the long process of stabilizing the soil erosion issue. Standing (overwintering) crop residues helped heal erosion problems and as a bonus provided food sources for wildlife. It was a winwin situation. Crops were grown profitably, precious farmland remained where it could be productive, wildlife numbers responded positively and hunters and fishermen were presented with many new opportunities. Life was good! Then along came North American ethanol legislation with accompanying $6 and $7 corn prices. Human innovation (at its worst) is back at it again. Out comes the mouldboard “Food sources for wildlife; plow, back go the a not-so-good story in bushes and downhill southwestern Ontario. goes the soil again. Not As I’ve mentioned rocket science, not good previously on FSHunting, and all of this done in the this part of our province face of soaring farmland evolved in the 1960’s and rental values. I and 1970’s from mixed guess this is the 21st farming to cash-cropping. century definition of ‘land Land was cleared stewardship’. and drained, bushes were pushed back and Science tells us that ‘squared-up’, almost all we’re in the 4th year of acres were introduced the next 32-year cold/wet to the continuous use of cycle. Perhaps someone mouldboard plows and will invent a new ethanol(no surprise) rolling land producing crop that can near river drainages be grown and harvested became victimized by on the floor of Lake where much extensive soil erosion. Huron of our topsoil is being Not rocket science and relocated. not good! and deer The 1980’s and 1990’s Turkey hunting (in this part saw the problem of the world) may be relegated to the pages of history books if we insist on the path we’ve chosen to follow……. not rocket science but an opportunity for some good common sense.” And so we’ve set the stage that turned the recent deluge into a disaster on sloped, erosion prone soil. For many acres it’s now too late; soil that’s disappeared into the drainage ditches, creeks, rivers and ultimately Lake Huron can never be replaced. What it’s taken with it (this spring’s livestock manure, applied nitrogen and phosphate and applied pesticides) only compound the tragedy and the economic loss. Mother nature won’t be controlled by man (four long ice-ages bracketed by five short inter-glacial warm periods in the most recent 10% of planet earth’s history) however we do have the ability to use reason and mitigate at least a part of natural destructive forces. Agricultural land loss to urban sprawl, power generation fads and soil erosion is nearing epic proportions yet ‘is’ controllable to some extent by stewards of the land. As Paul Simon said, ‘you know the nearer your destination the more you’re slip slidin’ away. What’s your destination? Len FSHunting.com Bravo Boo We have two Bravo’s this week. Music The inaugural WayHome music festival near Barrie in Oro-Medonte, Ontario took place last weekend and was, by all accounts, a major success. Artists performing for the roughly 35,000 concert goers included Modest Mouse, St. Vincent, Neil Young, Kendrick Lamar and Broken Social Scene, who made a surprise Saturday night appearance filling in for another group who had fallen ill. Billed as a music and arts festival, WayHome also featured works by Toronto-based artists and sculptors across its grounds, which included four stages of various sizes. Young was the headliner Friday night, and began his set by performing solo some of his classics including “Heart of Gold” and “Helpless,” before his band (which includes Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah) joined him onstage for the rest of his three-hour performance. Saturday night’s headliner was California rapper Kendrick Lamar, whose set was punctuated by a fireworks display. WayHome’s website, WayHome.com, already prompts music lover to “save the date” for next year’s festival, which is already scheduled for July 22, 23 and 24, 2016. Tuesday in Ethiopia he also became the first sitting president to address the African Union. In Ethiopia, Obama talked on counter-terrorism efforts against the militant group al-Shabab, as well as addressing the pervading issue of corruption in African politics. Obama said that, while it’s possible he could win enough votes to secure a third term in office, such an act is prohibited by the U.S. Constitution. “The law is the law, and no person is above the law, not even the president,” he said, nothing that leaders refusing to step down when their terms end put Africa’s democratic progress at risk. “Nothing will unlock Africa’s economic potential more than ending the cancer of corruption,” he said. He also touched on controversial topics including the treatment of women and homosexuals in Africa. 1588 – The Spanish Armada is first engaged by English ships – July 31 has historically been a poor day for Spanish sailors. In the 1580s, Philip II, King of Spain, and his sister-inlaw Elizabeth I, Queen of England, were not on good terms. Philip, a Catholic, deemed the queen (who was a Protestant) a heretic. Supported by the pope, in 1587, Philip made plans to invade England and overthrow Elizabeth’s regime. Those plans were pushed back a year due to the actions of English pirate Francis Drake, who destroyed about 30 Spanish ships and their supplies in a raid. Even though his allies advised against it, Philip charged headlong into an attack on England in 1588. On May 28 that year, 130 Spanish ships carrying over 2,000 guns and over 25,000 men embarked from Lisbon for the English Channel. Thousands more soldiers waited on the mainland in the Netherlands, ready to join up with the armada. An English fleet of 200 ships at Plymouth outnumbered the Spanish, but had far fewer guns. Those fleets engaged for the first time on this date in 1588, with England’s naval strategy of gunning from afar, rather than attempting to board enemy vessels from up close, proving superior. Spain’s ships and armies never successfully landed on Great Britain, and Mexico – According to Amnesty International, Mexico is facing “a crisis of enforced disappearances” that is “truly shocking.” In the past 10 months, authorities have found at least 60 mass graves with 129 bodies near the southern city of Iguala. Only 16 of the remains had been identified as of July 13. Investigations began following the disappearance of 43 student teachers who clashed with police while en route to a protest last September. Prosecutors say the 43 students were seized by police, handed over to drug gang members, killed and incinerated at a garbage dump. None of the recovered bodies match those missing students. Amnesty believes the situation in Mexico is troubling not only in that specific state of Guerrero, but across the country. Figures show that nearly 25,000 people are officially listed as missing or disappeared in Mexico since 2007. Almost half of those cases, over 11,000, occurred since President Enrique Pena Nieto took office on Dec. 1, 2012. USA – The identity of the gunman accused of killing two people and injuring nine others in a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theatre last Thursday has been confirmed as John Russell Houser. Houser, who reloaded his hand-gun in the middle of the spree, shooting 11 people before killing himself, was reportedly sympathetic towards racist, antiSemitic and homophobic groups. He reportedly stood up several minutes into the Amy Schumer comedy “Trainwreck” and began opening fire, killing two young women; Jillian Johnson and Mayci Breaux. Authorities say Houser was able to acquire his gun legally at an Alabama pawn shop, despite having a history of mental illness, alleged domestic violence and an arrest for arson. Republican Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has stated that Houser should not have been able to acquire a gun. Speaking at a prayer service this week, victim Jena Meaux described diving to the ground and being shot in the leg before scrambling safely to the theatre’s exit. Canada – Canadian actor living in the United States Donald Sutherland drew attention to an ongoing legal battle this week when he wrote an editorial explaining that, though he has a Canadian passport, is an Officer of the Order of Canada and is on Toronto’s Walk of Fame, he can’t vote in Canada. He was expressing a frustration held by many long-term expats, and in particular Gillian Frank and Jamie Duong, who recently lost an Ontario Court of Appeal case fighting a ban on voting for Canadians who have lived outside of the country for over five years. Their lawyer says they have received strong support to move forward and take the case to the Supreme Court. The law restricting expats from voting was put in place in 1993 by the Mulroney Government and was strengthened in 2007 under Stephen Harper, so that people could no longer visit Canada to restart the five-year clock. They must resume residence here. Frank and Duong challenged the five-year rule in court in 2012. Libya - Muammar Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and eight others have been sentenced to death for committing war crimes during that country’s 2011 revolution, which ultimately led to the toppling of the Gaddafi regime. Among the others facing the death penalty are the country’s former prime minister Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi and head of intelligence Abdullah al-Senussi. They have the right to appeal against their sentences within 60 days. Over 30 close associates of the late Colonel Gaddafi were tried for suppressing peaceful protests during the uprising. Saif al-Islam was not in court for the decision, but has previously appeared via video link. Emblematic of the fact that Libya is currently lacking a strong central government, Gaddafi’s son is currently being held by a rebel group that refuses to hand him over. The group says they will not hand him over to the court or execute him. He is also wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Eight other exofficials received life sentences and seven were given jail terms of 12 years each. Four were acquitted. This Day in History – July 31st that fall fewer than 10,000 men aboard only 67 ships returned to Spain. It would be the last serious threat to England until the Napoleonic era. Over 125 years later, early in the morning on this date in 1715, a Spanish treasure fleet of 12 ships hauling silver from Cuba back to Europe was caught in a hurricane. All but one of the ships were lost near Vero Beach, Florida, inspiring generations of treasure hunters. 1954 – An Italian expedition becomes the first to successfully scale K2 – Located in the Karakoram mountain range on the border between Pakistan and China, K2 is the second highest mountain in the world at 8,611 metres (28,251 ft.), behind only Mount Everest (29,029 ft.). There are 14 mountains in the world over 8,000 metres in height, with peaks in what is referred to as “the death zone,” as they are at altitudes above the point where there is oxygen sufficient to sustain human life. K2 is in an elite group as, of those 14 mountains, only it and Nanga Parbat (also in Pakistan) have never been climbed during the winter. Of those 14, K2 (nicknamed “The Savage Mountain”) has claimed the second highest number of climbers’ deaths, 81, again behind only Everest (210). However, as far fewer people have attempted to ascend K2, the death rate for climbers is staggeringly high. Before 1990, the death rate for K2 climbers was 41 percent, higher than any other mountain. It has since backed off to just below 20 percent, which is still far more than Everest’s rate of 4.4 percent. An Italian expedition led by explorer Ardito Desio finally succeeded in ascending to the summit of K2 on this date in 1954. Controversy surrounds the two climbers who reached the 1964 – Unmanned craft summit, Lino Lacedelli and Ranger 7 sends back the first Achille Compagnoni. It sent more than 4,300 pictures from six cameras to waiting scientists and engineers, at a quality 1,000 times better than any images previously captured on earthbound telescopes. They revealed that craters covered the lunar surface, even in areas that appeared to be entirely smooth; great craters were marked by small ones, and those were filled with tiny impact pockmarks down to craters with diameters just inches across. Further, streaks radiating out from large craters turned out to be chains of small craters and debris blasted out by impacts. Following the success of Ranger 7, someone in the control room was noticed eating peanuts. Since that mission, NASA control rooms ceremonially open a container of peanuts on risky missions for luck. 1991 – USA and USSR agree to reduce their nuclear arsenals – On this date in 1991, after more than nine years of negotiations, the United States and the Soviet Union signed an historic agreement to reduce their stockpiles of nuclear warheads by about a third. The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (or START), was signed in Moscow by US President George Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. At a joint Zimbabwe - Police in Zimbabwe have said they urgently want to speak to American dentist Walter James Palmer, after he killed one of Africa’s most famous lions earlier this month. As well as being popular with tourists, “Cecil the Lion” was tagged by researchers in 2008 as part of a study at the U.K.’s Oxford University. Earlier this week, Palmer reportedly went into hiding after receiving a wave of condemnation for his actions. As of Thursday, Palmer said he has not been contacted by U.S. or Zimbabwe authorities, but would assist them with inquiries if asked. Palmer allegedly paid in excess of $50,000 for a big game permit and traveled from his home in Minneapolis to kill an African lion. Palmer and two guides allegedly lured Cecil illegally from Hwange National Park where he had protected status, before killing it to claim its pelt and head as trophies. He claims he was unaware of the lion’s celebrity status. About 600 African lions are killed legally each year, with wealthy American big game hunters accounting for over half of that total. There are only about 30,000 lions left in Africa. By Dan Rankin news conference after the signing ceremony, Bush described START as “a significant step forward in dispelling half a century of mistrust.” Gorbachev said it promised to be the start of “an irreversible process” of arms reduction, but stressed there was “still a lot to do.” It was the first major agreement between the two countries on arms reduction in over a decade, and also called for the reduction of Moscow’s land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles by 50 percent. However, it still left the USA with 9,000 warheads, and the USSR with 7,000. That December, however, the Soviet Union collapsed before the START treaty could be ratified. This led to an intense period of diplomacy, which led to agreements being reached with the Russian Federation and three former Soviet states (Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan) where nuclear weapons were stationed. The START Treaty finally came into effect in December 1994, although the targets set out in the treaty were not met until 2001. Since then, further treaties such as the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty (SORT) and New START have limited the USA and Russia to 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads, down nearly two-thirds from the original START treaty. Exeter Examiner Friday, July 31, 2015 13 World Sports Roundup Pan Am Games – Canada’s athletic team achieved its pre-Games goals of finishing the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games in second place in the medal count, with 78 gold, 69 silver and 70 bronze for a total of 217 (up from last week’s total of 173). They finished behind just Team USA, who nabbed 265 medals – including 103 gold. Brazil finished a distant third with 141 medals. Unlike some other nations, the hosts of the game brought an ‘A’ team of Olympic-calibre athletes including the likes of swimmer Ryan Cochrane, decathlete Damian Warner, and kayaker Adam van Koeverden. American Michael Phelps nor Jamaican Usain Bolt attended the competition. The tally of 217 tops Canada’s previous best Pan Am Games total of 197 in Winnipeg in 1999. Some star athletes to look out for next year in Brazil include women’s basketball player Kia Nurse, who led the Canadian team to its first ever gold, and sprinter Andre De Grasse, who won both the 100 200 metres. Canada’s men’s softball team also won its eighth consecutive gold. Lima, Peru hosts the next Pan Am Games in 2019. Olympics – The water where Olympians will be competing in swimming and boating events in Rio next summer are getting failing grades from researchers. They say they’ve found dangerously high levels of viruses and bacteria from sewage in venues where athletes will compete from Aug. 5-21 next year. Some athletes who have begun training in Rio have already become sick with incapacitating fevers, vomiting and diarrhea. An Austrian sailing coach called the water “by far the worst” his team has ever seen in their careers. In Rio, as in many Brazilian urban areas, sewage runs through open ditches to streams and rivers feeding into the same beaches and water bodies soon to be Olympic sporting venues. This has left Rio’s famed beaches deserted due to the stench, sludge and copious dead fish. While adenovirus counts of 1,000 per litre raise alarm bells at Californian beaches, some of Rio’s water bodies show results in the millions and even billions per litre. NHL – In off-season NHL news, the league held a press conference at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts Wednesday, presenting the logos that will be worn by the team’s competing in next year’s outdoor Winter Classic game: The Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens. Speaking at the event, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman noted that between the Bruins and Habs, and the primary Gillette Stadium tenants the Patriots, the teams have won 34 championships (of which Montreal has won 24). Boston, who will be wearing a bear-topped logo similar to the team’s 19241925 jerseys, becomes the first team to have hosted the event twice; they also hosted it in 2010, when they beat the Flyers at Fenway Park. Only four players remain on the team from that game: Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Tuukka Rask, and David Krejci. Bettman also announced the game’s primary sponsor Bridgestone has extended their contract for another five years. there are just four Bruins left from that event: CFL – The going has been, well, rough, for Saskatchewan five games into the 2015 season, as the Roughriders lead the league in Points For (143) but are a league-worst 0-5. This can be at least partially explained by the fact that they have allowed a league-worst 165 Points Against. Worse than this, however, is the fact that, going forward, they will have to rely on third-string quarterback Brett Smith, after the team’s backup QB Kevin Glenn suffered a torn pectoral in their 31-21 loss to Hamilton on Sunday. Glenn will miss at least six games. The Riders’ would-be starter Darian Durant tore an Achilles tendon in the first game of the regular season a month ago. He is out for the season. The rookie Smith will be behind center tonight in Edmonton. Meanwhile, Ottawa secured their franchiserecord third win of the season last Friday, upsetting the Grey Cup-champion Stampeders 29-26 in Ottawa. Federal government investing in preserving vegetable freshness Speaking from SaintDenis-sur-Richelieu, Quebec last Friday, agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced an investment of $2.5 million to Bonduelle Research Inc., to introduce a new food preservation technology which will prolong the shelflife of vegetables making them safer to consume longer after they are harvested. The investment is being made through the “Growing Forward 2” Agri-Innovation Program, a five-year program worth up to $698 million. The announcement came on the same day a 120 kilowatt EnWave “ q u a n t a R E V ” machine was installed at Bonduelle’s Quebec facility. According to an EnWave release, the “Radiant Energy Vacuum” (or REV) machine equips Bonduelle to produce “dehydrofrozen vegetables,” which are produced by homogeneously removing a small amount of moisture from fresh vegetables immediately before freezing. The removal of moisture prior to freezing also reportedly enhances vegetables’ flavour, colour and nutrient concentration, while providing a protective coating against diseasecausing germs. This technology will make more vegetables available to consumers yearround, thereby increasing the competitiveness of Canada’s fresh produce sector. The frozen food brand Arctic Gardens, processed in Strathroy formerly under name the Carriere Foods Inc., is one of the brands likely to benefit from the new technology. year, according to the results of the research & development. However it is actually a kind of fungus that can be problematic to a number of different species of trees. This Fungus is properly known as Xylaria polymorpha, this fungus is a saprobic fungus, which means that it only invades dead or dying wood. Dead Man’s Fingers shows a preference for Apple, Beech, Maple, Locust, and Elm trees. This fungus only invades dead or dying wood, as a result of a problem and not a cause. Even though this fungus does not kill the tree in itself, it will cause problems, which will eventually cause the tree to die. In taking care of our health, we can not overlook the importance of mental health. Balanced health is a whole package, which includes the body, mind and soul. I intend to address all three aspects at various times in this column. It’s been said before that in this time and age, people have expectations for instantaneous results in almost any endeavor. That we are impatient, and do not put in the time to earn what we receive, in many areas of life. I agree with that statement. Being in the fitness industry, one of the main reasons people give up is that they do not see results after their first week, and sometimes even their first day. Even though we can ‘fast track’ a lot of things in life, when it comes to our health and wellness, we HAVE TO put in the work, dedication, the sweat and tears, self reflection and take personal responsibility. However, I digress; today’s article is on gratitude. Gratitude for what one receives in life can literally change your life. Appreciation of the small things in your life can clear your mind, sharpen your focus, minimize drama in your life, and breathe new life into you. I would like to issue a challenge to you. For the next month, write daily in a gratitude journal, either on paper or on your cell, 5 simple things that you are grateful for. I have done this before both for myself and prescribed it to clients, and the change in our mental focus and appreciation is tremendous. Life changing really. Over the years, what has made it into my gratitude journal has changed, but one thing that has not changed, is that when I take the time in a day to appreciate the little things and be truly thankful, I live in the moment, and I am blessed. Below is my list from yesterday. Drop me a line and tell me your list of 5, or if you accept my challenge, tell me how it changed your life. I’m all ears, and as always, looking for your success! My list of 5: 1- My favorite lily was open in my flowerbed, and it was beautiful. It really touches my soul. 2- I was able to console a friend that received bad news with a genuine hug. (Was very grateful that she allowed me to share that moment with her) 3-I went for a walk with my mom, and we enjoyed the sunshine and the beautiful weather. 4-I received an email from a friend/client that said thank you for supporting her on her journey. 5-I heard an awesome list of songs on the radio as I drove home from work! The Bottom Line Accept my challenge, start looking for the things to be grateful for, and live in the moment. Some days it may be hard to reach even 2 items for your list, but keep looking. Nothing can be too small or silly to make the list. It gets easier with time, and I can not overstate how positively it affects your mental health. **Shelley is the owner, trainer and wellness coach at Optimal Balance. We have a dog and a cat and want to make sure our garden is pet safe. What should we avoid planting? Congratulations on your new home! It is a great idea to consider your fur family’s needs during garden planning. There are thousands of plants, shrubs and trees that are pet safe and can make your garden a beautiful, safe oasis for your cat and dog. Every year, however, many pets are poisoned from plants or products used in the garden. cidal soap, slug traps and manual removal of pests are non-toxic methods to keep your plants and pets safe. Sago Mulch is another consideration for keeping your newly planted garden healthy, reduce watering needs and prevent weeds. Many gardeners select cocoa mulch, which is made from cocoa bean shells. It is popular because it smells like chocolate and has a nice colour. With its sweet smell, dogs are often attracted to this type of mulch and will commonly eat it. Depending on the amount consumed, this mulch can lead to chocolate poisoning. The symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors and even cardiac arrest. Choose less toxic mulch alternatives such as shredded pine or cedar. Controlling pests in your garden should be done using as many natural methods as possible. Companion planting (using plants that compliment each other and provide pest resistance for each other), using insecti- Composting is a great, environmentally conscious way to feed your plants naturally and your garden will thank you for it. Ensure your compost is contained and not accessible to your pets. Some of the foods you compost can be toxic to pets. In addition, the decomposing food contains fungi that produce mycotoxins. These toxins can lead to violent tremors within 30-90 minutes of ingestion. Ensuring that your pet is receiving parasite control will also prevent unwanted fleas, ticks and intestinal parasites found in the garden from hitching a ride on or in your pet. The last consideration is for pets that suffer from seasonal allergies. Try to select a garden with plants that do not produce the common pollen allergens and keep weeds controlled. We wish you all the best with your garden design and planning and hope it brings you and your furry friends many years of enjoyment. By. Maureen Cole, Huron Mayor South Weekend Smiles Benny in the Desert In the great desert lived a band of nomads. Their leader, Benny, had risen to his rank due to his magnificent beard. His people believed a man’s strength and courage came from his beard, and thus the man with the biggest beard was their chief. After leading the band for many years, Benny began to fell uncomfortable wearing the beard, in this hot and dusty land. He wanted to shave it off, so he called his council together to get their advice. When he said he wanted to shave, the councilmen were shocked. One said, “Do you not remember the ancient legend, Sire. The leader who removes his beard is cursed and made into a piece of earthenware.” Benny had heard this legend, but being a modern man, he scoffed at the tale. Being headstrong, he went ahead and cut and scraped away his once magnificent beard. As the final whisker was cut off, a huge dust storm came up. It lasted only a few seconds, and when it cleared, there was a man-sized clay vessel where only moments before had stood their leader. The council then knew the legend must be true.
