This student catalog is designed to provide you with an in-depth introduction to our school, our courses and our teaching Faculty, as well as information about fees, registration and all the other relevant administrative issues. As Joseph Pilates himself said, “physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness,” and Pilates, as the world is increasingly discovering, is a marvelous path to physical fitness. 5 Rael Isacowitz Mission Statement Body Arts and Science International® - in short, BASI Pilates® - is a teaching institute specializing in the training and continuing education of Pilates instructors. this by preserving the classical repertoire of the founders of Pilates and supplementing it with contemporary experience and scientific knowledge. The result is an approach to the teaching of Pilates, which is both true to the roots of the Method and valid in terms of the most up-to-date research and understanding. Established in 1989, BASI Pilates® was one of the first companies to introduce curriculum-based studies for Pilates instructors. BASI founder and CEO, Rael Isacowitz, has been teaching the Method for over 30 years and is one of the most prominent and respected Pilates teachers in the world. A BASI Pilates education covers three overlapping fields: • A thorough understanding of the science underlying the Pilates Method, including physiology, applied anatomy, the principles of alignment and posture. BASI Pilates is dedicated to formulating and maintaining the highest possible professional standards for the teaching of Pilates. As the company’s name indicates, BASI approaches the Pilates method as both an art and a science – i.e. the exercise of human creativity and skill, as well as a branch of knowledge that can be systematically taught and studied. • The classical Pilates repertoire. • BASI innovations and teaching methodologies. The latter include the BASI® Block System, a method of classifying Pilates exercises and building them into workouts, and an entirely new repertoire of exercises based on the Avalon® System, a line of equipment designed by Rael Isacowitz. The mission of BASI Pilates is to perpetuate the work of Joseph and Clara Pilates by educating teachers of the highest caliber. Use of Facilities and Equipment To schedule Practical Teaching or Observation hours, please call On Center Conditioning (949-642-6970) at least 24 hours in advance to confirm the studio is available for students. • The studio is available for Observation from 7am – 7pm, Monday – Friday. • You should always sign in with the studio manager and have your log sheets signed out by the studio manager or the studio teaching staff. • The studio is available for Practical Teaching from 11am – 4pm, Monday – Friday. Comprehensive Teacher Training Course (CTTC) The Comprehensive Teacher Training Course (CTTC) covers both classical and contemporary exercise repertoire, anatomy and kinesiology and BASI’s unique teaching methodologies. Specific subjects addressed include physiology, applied anatomy, the theory of movement, the principles of alignment and posture, exercise assessment and the proprietary BASI® Block System, a method of exercise classification. on all the major Pilates apparatus, among them the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and Ladder Barrel and auxiliary equipment. The course comprises 12 academic modules, student teaching, mandatory observation and practice, a written submission and practical and teaching evaluations. In total, the course requires a time investment of over 500 hours. The program excludes subjects, such as basic anatomy, with which the students are assumed to be familiar, focusing instead on the proprietary components of a BASI education. Students wishing to be recognized as BASI Pilates graduates must complete all requirements, including final testing. Objectives Course objectives are identical to those for the CTTC with emphasis on: • Development of effective cues in working with all populations including the use of appropriate modifications and assists. • Use of the BASI Block® System in program design and development. • Understanding the unique qualities of BASI exercises on all apparatus and mat. 15 Prerequisites Successful and documented completion of a recognized Pilates teacher training program meeting the following criteria: • A comprehensive program, comprising a minimum of 450 hours of study and practice on all major Pilates apparatus. • In-person training; online training courses do not qualify. • Practical assessment of movement and teaching skills. • A Program Director with a minimum of 10 years Pilates teaching experience. All requirements must be successfully completed within 12 months of the last day of the course. * Additional fee required Comprehensive Teacher Training Course with Dance Specialization (CTTC with Dance) This course is an expanded version of the CTTC, with additional modules specific to dance students and professional dancers. In addition to the 12 modules of the CTTC, the course has six modules of dance-specific repertoire on the Mat and apparatus. The course was developed by BASI Pilates founder Rael Isacowitz, MA. and dance expert Prof. Karen Clippinger, M.S.P.E. It is held once a year under the tutelage of Karen Clippinger. 17 Objectives Course objectives are identical to those for the CTTC. The theoretical components of the course are identical to those in the first part of the CTTC. The Mat exercise repertoire includes the use of props and small equipment. BASI Pilates regards the MTTC as a springboard to the CTTC and encourages Mat students to continue their studies with the CTTC. All requirements must be successfully completed within 12 months of the last day of the course. * Additional fee required 24 Centralized Testing All students attending US-based Comprehensive (CTTC), Mat (MTTC) and ProBridge Teacher Training Courses are tested centrally. Both practical examinations and teaching evaluations are conducted at various locations across the United States and proctored by BASI founder Rael Isacowitz and/or Director of Education Constance Holder. Host locations will arrange clients for students to work with during the Teaching Evaluation process. In addition, the host will provide recommendations for airport, lodging and transportation closest to the studio. Testing Fees Course CTTC Practical Teaching Evaluation Both $100.00 $200.00 $250.00 MTTC $100.00 $100.00 $150.00 Separate fees will apply if it is necessary for a student (of either the CTTC or the MTTC) to retake either the Final Practical Examination or the Teaching Evaluation. There will be no additional charge to retake the Final Written exam of either the CTTC or the MTTC. Please advise BASI headquarters at once if you need to cancel or reschedule your reservation for Centralized Testing. Written notice must be received no later than 72 hours before date of testing to avoid an administration charge of $100.00. (The balance of $150.00 previously collected will be held on account and transferred to the next chosen testing reservation with a balance due of $100.00 to be paid prior to exam date). For additional information, please contact BASI Headquarters. 25 26 Teacher Training Admission Policies Requirements • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. • Familiarity with the teachings of Joseph Pilates. • Applicants must have a High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D. exam). • Experience in a related form of physical activity. • BASI Pilates does not offer “ability to benefit” for prospective students. • Teaching experience is recommended. • Study in basic anatomy and physiology. Non-Discrimination Policy BASI Pilates does not discriminate in any manner on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, veteran’s status or national origin regarding its educational programs or activities, including employment and admissions. Qualification and Credentials Students who successfully complete the BASI Pilates Comprehensive Teacher Training, CTTC with Specializations, CTTC with Dance or ProBridge receive a BASI Pilates Teaching Diploma. Students who complete the Mat Teacher Training course receive a certificate of completion. Other certificate courses provided by BASI are Pilates for Injuries & Pathologies, Peand Post-Natal Pilates and the Ultimate Pilates program (comprising the Mentor, Master and Master Reunion programs.) 27 Qualification and Credentials continued Diplomas and certificates are sent to the address that we have on file when all BASI Pilates requirements have been met. These include satisfactory attendance of all modules, passing scores on all required exams, submission and acceptance of the research paper and completion and submission of all observation, self-practice and practice teaching hours. BASI Pilates reserves the right to withhold a certificate if the student has not satisfactorily completed all requirements or met the financial obligations. Terminology In keeping with regulatory requirements, BASI Pilates has ceased using the term “certification” to describe the certificate of qualification that it provides. The correct professional meaning of “certification” is third-party assessment of knowledge, training and skills according to predetermined standards. Certification (also called licensing in certain professions) is provided by independent, non-educational bodies, such as medical boards, legal bar associations and, in our profession, the PMA. These certification bodies assess the knowledge and skills of people who have attended training courses, such as those run by BASI Pilates. has provided over the years and that is held in the highest esteem within the Pilates profession. Only the terminology has changed. As Pilates matures and enters the mainstream, it is incumbent upon the method’s thought-leaders to adopt and maintain professional standards. That is exactly what BASI Pilates is doing. The term now used by BASI to describe the credentials received by students who complete its teacher training courses is BASI Pilates Teaching Diploma. It is identical to the certificate that BASI 28 Tuition Tuition Fees The prices of the BASI Pilates teacher training courses are as follows: • Comprehensive Teacher Training Course (CTTC) - $3,995 • ProBridge – $2,995 • CTTC with Dance - $3,600 • Mat Teacher Training Course (MTTC) - $1,100 These fees refer to US-based courses only. For courses outside the US, please consult the BASI web site or the web sites of BASI’s franchisees. Payment The Payment policy for all teacher training courses is as follows: • A $500 registration fee, comprising a $450 deposit and $50 administration fee, must be submitted with the course application. That fee is credited towards the cost of the course. • The remaining sum – $3,495 for the CTTC, $2,495 for ProBridge, $3,100 for the CTTC with Dance and $600 for the MTTC – must be paid up to 15 days prior to the commencement of the course. • In the event of a student’s registration not being accepted by BASI or the student choosing to withdraw from the program before it begins, the $450 deposit will be reimbursed. The remaining $50 will remain with BASI as a non-refundable administration fee. 29 Payment continued NOTE: Students resident in California are obliged to make a contribution to the state Student Tuition Recovery Trust Fund (STRF), which is explained in detail in Appendix A. For California-based students, the total cost of tuition is $4202.50, including STRF. 30 Policies Regarding Fees • A receipt is provided for all fees. • Fees for any future courses may be subject to amendment. • In the event that BASI Pilates decides to make a refund, administration fees will apply. • All fees are exclusive of sales tax. BASI Pilates reserves the right to cancel any course. If a course is cancelled and a suitable replacement is not offered, students will be refunded all fees that have been paid. Financial Aid BASI Pilates does not offer or participate in Title IV or State/Federal loan programs. Scholarship Program Scholarships are awarded to selected, deserving students in the memory of the late Kathy Grant, an original student of Joseph Pilates and one of the leading proponents of the method up until her death in 2010. deep commitment to the cause of Pilates education. The Kathy Grant Memorial Scholarship is open to any student who wishes to study the Pilates method with BASI and is able to demonstrate both financial need and a Cancellations and Refunds Students’ Right to Cancel Students have the right to cancel the enrollment agreement and obtain a refund of charges paid until conclusion of the first class session (Module 1) or the seventh day after enrollment, whichever is later. Cancellation shall occur when the student gives Notice of Cancellation at the address specified in this catalog. 31 Students Right to Cancel continued • The $50 application fee is non- refundable. • STRF fees are non-refundable (CA only) • The deposit of $450 will be refunded within 30 days if your application is not accepted. • Deposits and course fees will not be refunded after the start of Module 2 of the course. Refunds prior to the completion of Module 2 will be prorated to include workbooks and course attendance. During or after Module 1 BASI Pilates will retain the deposit of $450 and $50 application fee for a total of $500. (BASI Pilates will assist the student to attend the module at a later date and in a different location.) • A student chooses to leave the course of her/his own volition after the start of Module 2. • A student fails to attend the course, following BASI Pilates notification of acceptance and confirmation by the student. • A student fails to attend the course without reasonable prior notification (72 hours prior to the start of Module 1). • In the event that a student has missed one or more modules due to failure to make a payment under the payment plan. Payment will still be due in full. A consultation process will be initiated in the unlikely event that BASI Pilates management asks a student to leave a course. Fees paid up to that point in the course would not be refunded. Absences • A student is allowed to miss up to two Modules without forfeiting the course. • In the event that a student is absent from three or more Modules, their participation in the course will be suspended and the fees will be held in trust. Arrangements for the resumption of the course must be made with the Director of Student Relations. • A student is allowed to make up missed Modules at another location. Arrangements must be made with the Director of Student Relations. • Students are responsible for making up the materials they miss in the Modules. • Missed Modules must be taken prior to completion of the final and written exams. • A written exam, if missed, can be taken at a later, pre-arranged time at the Host location. Arrangements should be made with the Director of Student Relations. 33 Leave of Absence BASI Pilates recognizes that students may need to be absent from a course for various reasons. A request for a leave of absence must be submitted in writing to the Director of Student Relations no later than 72 hours prior to the start of the module in question. Allowances will be made for emergencies. A student may be absent for up to six months without incurring a penalty. An absence of over six months will result in the student being regarded as having withdrawn from the course and all fees will be forfeited. Withdrawal Withdrawal from a course must be done in writing (USPS or email to info@ basipilates.com) and is subject to the terms of the BASI Pilates Refund and Cancellation policy. 34 35 36 Programs of Study: Advanced Education Pilates is now firmly in the mainstream of the health & fitness industry As the popularity of the method grows, instructors are faced with the challenge of dealing with infinite types of clients, each with her/his individual needs, abilities, chronic injuries or pathologies. It is a daunting prospect, even for a highly experienced professional. At the same time, mainstream exposure has led to the use of Pilates methods and exercises in a wide range of disciplines, from strengthening athletes to relieving pain and alleviating some of the physical manifestations of conditions such as Parkinson. Pilates professionals now have the opportunity to expand their scope and enrich their careers – if they have the appropriate training. Program Description BASI Advanced Education provides Pilates professionals with the specialized skills they need to succeed and prosper in today’s very competitive commercial environment. In 1989, he founded Body Arts and Science International (BASI Pilates), which has developed into one of the foremost Pilates education organizations in the world. At present, BASI Pilates is represented in over 20 countries. Rael earned his B.Ed degree from the Wingate Institute, Israel, where he subsequently joined the Faculty. He also holds an MA in Dance from the University Of Surrey, England. During his career he has worked with numerous Olympians and professional athletes. Rael’s Pilates teachers included Alan Herdman and several of the first-generation Pilates teachers (known as Elders). He is a regular contributor to several industry publications. 39 Teaching Faculty continued Constance Holder – Director of Education Constance Holder brought a rich background in movement technique, holistic health and nutritional training to BASI Pilates, when she entered the Comprehensive Teacher Training Course in the late 1990’s. Education in 2006. In addition to her own teaching, she has worked with Rael as an instructor and assistant in workshops, conferences, and over 15 BASI Pilates Comprehensive Teacher Training Courses, gaining unparalleled exposure to one of the most gifted Pilates educators of contemporary times. Immediately following the course, she was invited to join the staff at On Center Conditioning (the BASI Pilates home studio) and to work and train with Rael Isacowitz. Students with any physical limitations should see a physician to clear them for participation, or to provide specific written recommendations for any modifications or limitations that may be necessary. We understand that sitting and observing in the studio for long periods of time can be uncomfortable, but please refrain from lying on the floor or blocking the walkways. • Please refrain from wearing footwear while within the green carpet (On Center Conditioning). • Please leave all belongings in a changing area. (This includes cups, books, bags, etc.) 48 Tardiness Developing good work ethics is an important part of your education with BASI Pilates. Students arriving late for class are interrupting the Faculty and other students. Students who know they will be late should contact the Host facility and/or Faculty beforehand. • 1 to 15 minutes late will be counted as 15 minutes late • 6 to 30 minutes late will be counted as 30 minutes late • 31- 60 minutes late will be counted as 1 hour late. Students are required to make up any work they miss and obtain any missing lecture notes. Penalties Students are required to conduct themselves in accordance with the above policies as well as any additional policies imposed by the host studio. Failure to abide by these policies may result in penalization, up to and including dismissal from the course. Probation, Dismissal and Re-admittance A student who does not behave in accordance with the policy will receive a written warning. A second infraction of policy may result in dismissal from the program. A student may reapply for re-admission to an upcoming course after one year has elapsed from the date of dismissal, but such admission is not guaranteed. The Director of Education will notify the student in writing should it become necessary to dismiss the student. The dismissal letter will contain the date and the reason for dismissal. It is the responsibility of the dismissed student to notify the appropriate lending institution if the student has a student loan or is receiving financial aid. Prepaid tuition will be refunded according to the school’s refund policy. The following acts will result in immediate dismissal from the program and the offender will be barred from entering the studio premises thereafter: • Theft or vandalism of studio property or the personal property of others. • All forms of bias including race, ethnicity, gender, disability, national origin, and creed as demonstrated through verbal and/or written communication and/or physical acts. 49 Probation, Dismissal and Re-admittance continued • Intentional disruption of classroom activity. • Sexual harassment including creating a hostile environment and coercing an individual to perform sexual favors in return for something. • Possession, use, or sale of controlled substances, including alcohol. • All types of dishonesty, including cheating, plagiarism, knowingly furnishing false information to BASI Pilates, forgery, and alteration or use of BASI Pilates documents with intent to defraud. • Possession or display of weapons while on studio premises. Drugs and Alcohol The possession, use, or sale of controlled substances, including but not limited to marijuana, cocaine, stimulants, alcohol, and/or depressants, is not allowed on studio premises or at any sponsored off-premises function. A student suspected to be under the influence and/ or in possession of prohibited substance will be suspended immediately and the incident will be reported to the police. Students are requested to report any violation of this policy immediately. Grievance Procedures Informal Students are encouraged to resolve grievances informally. Complaints concerning a Faculty member or a member of the BASI Pilates administration should be resolved directly between the people involved, whenever possible. BASI Pilates does not initiate formal grievance procedures unless informal efforts have been made to resolve the grievance. Formal Step 1 If a grievance has not been satisfactorily resolved by informal procedures, the student may file a written grievance with the Director of Student Relations within 60 days of the event that preceded the grievance. The Director of Student Relations shall 50 investigate the complaint within five business days of being filed and shall contact the student in an effort to resolve the grievance. The Director of Student Relations shall present all concerned parties with a written response within an additional 10 business days. Step 2 If a grievance has not been satisfactorily resolved in Step 1, it shall be submitted to the Director of Education, along with all relevant materials and a report describing shall conduct any necessary investigation and contact the person submitting the complaint in an effort to resolve the issue. The Director of Education shall present all the efforts to resolve the grievance. Within five business days of receiving the grievance, the Director of Education concerned parties with a written answer to the grievance within 10 business days after the meeting. That decision will be final. For students in California and Washington State, nothing in these policies prevents you from contacting your relevant state board with queries or complaints. Please see Appendix A for details. 51 52 Student Services Guidance Student Information Students and prospective students can receive guidance on requirements, course selection or any other issues from the BASI Pilates Director of Student Relations. Current and accurate personal contact information is necessary for effective communication. Study Groups Housing Students are encouraged to form study groups with other BASI Pilates students enrolled in the same program. Study groups can assist in the learning process, through group discussions and exam preparations. Experience has shown that students who participate in study groups improve their overall performance and understanding of the subject matter. BASI Pilates does not maintain dormitory facilities and is not responsible for finding or assisting a student in finding housing. 53 Library Facilities BASI students receive the study guide and movement analysis workbooks (all published by BASI Pilates) appropriate to the course they are taking. located at 1300 Irvine Avenue in Newport Beach. The library has computer stations with Internet access, places to study and a variety of resource materials, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, newspapers and access to the Orange County library network for materials not available on site. The public library nearest to On Center Conditioning is the Mariners Library Pilates Interactive™ BASI recommends to its students that they subscribe to Pilates Interactive™, an online resource for Pilates professionals. Owned by BASI Pilates and two private partners, Pilates Interactive has videos of the BASI repertoire, augmented by text descriptions and demonstration videos.
