FOUR SEASONS BALLROOM
BENEFITING THE
KEEP THE SPIRIT ALIVE
WHO IS LA CATRINA?
The first image of La Catrina appeared as
a zinc etching originally created by José
Guadalupe Posada for a satirical leaflet
produced in 1910. While most of his work
was unknown during his life, Posada's
images were reintroduced to the public
by Jean Charlot and Diego Rivera.
Rivera popularized La Calavera Catrina
in his mural "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park" (1947), and she
has since become a time honored symbol
for Dia de Los Muertos that is embraced
and celebrated by millions every year.

everyday tasks and participating in work and fun
activities. José Guadalupe Posada, a famed graphic
artist, pioneered the image of La Catrina, the elegant,
aristocratic skeleton, which is still seen today

THE GRAND DEBUT
Gala del Museo is an annual spirited fundraising event that reminisces the past and recognizes our present accomplishments in visual art and culture. The event benefits Mexic-Arte
Museumʼs exhibition and education programs.
This year marks the debut, in grand fashion, of the Catrina Ball, a black tie masquerade concept event in celebration of Mexicoʼs beloved La Catrina. In addition to elegant and
adventurous ball dress, guests are encouraged to go all out and don Calavara/Dia de los
Muertos makeup, masks, lush rose crowns, or other themed couture in the style of La
Catrina.
The Mexic-Arte Museum, Catrina Ball Co-Chairs Laurel and Edgar Prats and Patricia Vonne
and their event partners aim to truly “Keep the Spirits Alive” with the goal of making the
Catrina Ball—not unlike New Yorkʼs much-anticipated Met Ball—an annual legacy event and
fashion extravaganza attended by Austinʼs most influential luminaries and supporters of the
arts for years to come.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS
SCREEN IT!
Mexic–Arte Museum’s Screen It! art outreach program introduces students to the basic principles of
screen printing and related careers in the art field. Screen It! courses focus on: creative design, computer
literacy and entrepreneurial training. Over 1,500 students are served in the schools during the year.
FAMILY DAYS
Family Days are held four times per year at the museum and are provided at no charge. Event activities
are crafted around exhibition concepts and encourage families to reflect on their gallery experience
through collaboration and hands–on art making.
INTERNSHIPS
Each year, Mexic–Arte Museum hosts undergraduate interns from area universities. Areas of internship
focus include: exhibition, education, graphic design, public relations, special events, art history, and
cultural studies.
GALLERY GUIDES
Education–based, gallery guides are generated for exhibitions. The guides—offered both in the gallery
and online—provide the general public with a closer look at the exhibition, touching on subjects ranging
from history to artist achievement to social relevance. Each guide is preserved in the museum archive
and acts as a permanent testament to the history of the museum.
TEACHER WORKSHOPS
Each year, The Contemporary, Blanton Museum of Art, and Mexic–Arte Museum team up to present
the Summer Teacher Institute. This annual teacher workshop utilizes the concepts and processes of
contemporary art in the classroom. Through fun and practical workshops over two days at multiple
institutions, teachers gain the tools they need to bring art alive in the classroom.
TOURS
Guided tours of Mexic–Arte Museum exhibitions provide students and teachers with a unique cultural
experience. They generate a greater awareness of Mexican and Latin American heritage. Bilingual tours
are available.
