Congratulations Georgia-Pacific
For the seventh year AGPAL Broadcasting Inc. has chosen a Lincoln County business who
represents a company that is involved in their community. This year Georgia Pacific, Toledo,
has been chosen to be recognized and thanked for their community service, support,
assistance and strength they give the residents of Toledo and all of Lincoln County.
In 1957, with the construction of the Toledo
mill, Georgia-Pacific entered the pulp and paper
business (from 1927 to 1957). Georgia-Pacific
was strictly a lumber, plywood and building
products company. The Toledo mill was built as
an integrated pulp and paper facility designed to
utilize the residual wood chip material from local
and area sawmills. Toledo is Georgia-Pacific’s first
pulp and paper mill and still today, Georgia-Pacific
Toledo Pulp and Paper Operations is the only pulp
and paper mill ever constructed by Georgia-Pacific
from the ground up! The Toledo mill is the largest
manufacturing facility in Lincoln County. The mill
manufactures the heavy brown paper that is made
into corrugated boxes and packaging. The mill does not make the actual boxes, but ships the linerboard and corrugating
medium in 6,000 to 8,000 pounds rolls inside both railroad cars and semi-trucks to box plants on the West Coast.
The mill has 400 total employees with over 300 represented by the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers
(AWPPW) Local 13 and an annual payroll of over $40 million dollars of family wage jobs. The mill’s property tax
payments are well over 2 million dollars annually.
The Georgia-Pacific Toledo mill has a long history of investment, involvement and volunteering in local community
organizations, activities and projects. Some of the many community outreach projects include awards to Frank Gray
and Joe Todd Memorial Scholarships for local students awards occasionally a four year Georgia Pacific Foundation
Scholarships. Georgia-Pacific hosts a “FREE” kids fishing derby at the mill’s Olalla Reservoir family recreation area
in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Longview Hills Fishing Club and several other
local organizations. Georgia-Pacific regularly partners with local businesses, governmental agencies, and non profits
on local projects like the Yaquina River Clean Up, Earth Day, career days at local schools, senior meal site/meals on
wheels, science fairs, outdoor schools, nature hikes, Olalla Resevior Triathlon, Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Sea
Fest, Toledo Summer Festival and Hometown Holiday. And at last count, about 25% of the mill’s employees were
volunteer coaches for all kinds of youth activities and sports throughout the year.
