I’ve never been to Tampa. I’ve actually never been to Florida for that matter. I had a neighbor named Kevin that we
used to call Aryan Kevin because he sported “PURE WOOD” on the backs of his biceps. He had a blonde pony-tail
and rode Harleys. He had one big white bike he had named “Ultra” and another with blue & orange flames on the
tank. The flame bike had an air compressor hooked to the shocks so when he parked it he could actually lower the
frame to the ground. He told me about this ‘Iron Butt’ ride he did from Long Beach to the end of the Florida Keys
on “Ultra”. That was the only time I had thought about visiting Florida. Nothing against Florida, It just didn’t seem
like somewhere I’d end up for any reason. The only people I knew that went to Florida were the people intertwined
with the skate contests that went on at the S.P.O.T. and my old neighbor, Kevin.
Fast forward a decade or two and worlds collide. In an effort to get around some scheduling issues the “higher ups”
decided the best opportunity to get the Fourstar team together for a catalog shoot would be if we all met in Florida.
Since I only travel for catalog shoots, and considering this one revolved around the Tampa Pro, it looked like I’d be
chalking up some common ground with my old neighbor, Kevin. Minus a Harley named Ultra, A blonde pony, and
that whole white power thing.
With the tour kicking off the Monday after the Tampa Pro contest, and my official duties not need until then, I
needed a way to see the contest. I was certain one of our guys would win & wanted to have a photo of that guy
holding the giant check with champagne spraying all over him for the catalog. So I spoke with Talent Managements
finest, and asked if I could fly out to Tampa earlier, with him. Being a Tampa Veteran, He was confused, “You actually
want to go early and do Tampa?” He said. After I informed him that I’d never been his eyes widened and he asked
“NEVER?” I assured him I hadn’t and he got excited about the opportunity of “popping my Tampa cherry”.
I left the office early Thursday to get all my gear set to go. As I walked out of Rick’s office on my way out, Carroll
shouted, “You’re gonna need those nylon Fourstar shorts for Mons.” I was confused as I had no idea what he actually
meant, but I figured it must involve women without clothes or a rave if it was coming from Carroll.
Sam and I touched down late Friday evening and went straight to the hotel in Ybor City. We shared an elevator with
Nyjah Houston on the way up, I’m still pissed Sam didn’t introduce me. Anyway, the next day we popped up and hit
The Bricks, literally. It’s a restaurant that Brian Schaefer started in Ybor, which for those of you have never been, is
in Tampa. It’s a neighborhood that I thought would be some white-trash, low-rent suburb based on all the things I’d
read about it over the years, but it’s not. It is actually nice and pretty much where you want to be if you’re in Tampa.
After The Bricks and some coffee, we headed straight over to the SPOT to watch practice and I was certain my hopes
of one our guys taking a spot in the top 3 would come to fruition. Ishod, Malto, Shane & Eric were all competing
and there was no chance in hell one of them wouldn’t be on top of that podium. Eric was, in classic fashion, making
everyone laugh with tricks only he can do and at the same time, make it look funny. He’s won before and doesn’t
need to qualify to make the contest. The other dudes were all lighting up the course with scalpel like precision. By
the end of practice things looked good for our boys. Sean was happy and polite as he got his run together, Shane
silently tried tricks only a reality with a video game console for most humans, and Ishod skated so hard he chafed
not only his balls, but his other bits too, Ouch! Despite this injury his run looked really good, nothing a little Epsom
salt bath couldn’t fix up.
Long story short, everyone qualified, and everyone but Eric made the finals. Malto ended up getting third, but they
only sprayed champagne on the guy who got first so I missed my hero shot, so lame.
“...SOUTHERN FRIED THREESOME...”
We hit the road after the finals and had a long drive
to Panama City the 4 Live Crew Tour had officially
kicked off. It was Sam, Malto, Shane, Ishod and
myself. Eric had to stay back in Tampa because
he had an 8 minute shoe design meeting that he
couldn’t take care of before we split, or reschedule.
He assured us he’d meet us in Panama City the next
morning in time for the demo. I was nervous, Eric
is crucial. Not only for his demonstration ability but
his absence can insight serious low morale for the
locals. I’ve seen kids cry when Koston is billed and
doesn’t show, dudes got pull.
We got to Panama City and met up with Carroll,
Meza & Ben. They skipped Tampa, having already
enjoyed what the city had to offer in their long and
illustrious skateboard careers. When we pulled up
to our hotel late that night there was a group of two women and one man wafting a smell out of their
room. Sam was certain that one of them had farted but I was even more certain that a nasty southern
fried threesome had just gone down and they were trying to cool off. We had a demo & signing
about an hour from Panama City scheduled for the next day so we all laughed at the threesome a
bit more and then called it a night.
Our demo was in a small beach town called, Fort Walton Beach. It was a quaint place with a good
skate scene thanks to Lee from Plus Skate shop. The boys signed autographs, then did a demo in
Plus’ private facility. It consisted of mostly a bowled mini-ramp but had a small street course consisting
of two marble ledges. Carroll and Malto annihilated the mini, while Ishod & Shane entertained the
kids on the two marble ledges. Koston was somewhere mid-state in a rental car , that shoe meeting
must’ve run over. A lot of smiling faces and finely demonstrated stunts went down, and then Ishod
rolled his ankle which would keep him out for the next couple days, rough start for the poor kid.
What would he do without being able to skate? People call him a skate rat and I know that term goes
way back but I think skate terminator or skate cyborg might be a better name to call him. I’ve been
in this business for a while and he has more stamina than anyone, period. You ever see Forest Gump
where he doesn’t stop running? It’s like that, but with tricks. We had a bite at a local seafood joint
and then we hit the road to Tallahassee. Koston was already there and sending us all sorts of encouraging text
messages throughout our drive, he must’ve felt guilty about missing the first demo. After another
late night check-in and more text messages of Eric’s balls we were all ready to hit the sack.
“PIGLET IS GREAT EATING”
The next day we had a demo at an outdoor
skatepark in Tallahassee for for Phaze One.
Although we had lost Ishod to injury we
had re-upped with Koston , and Brophy,
who joined us fresh off a flight from China.
Unfortunately Brophy had brought with
him some sort of bird flu and wasn’t in
any shape for a demonstration. The locals
surrounded the perimeter of the concrete
park and the boys went to work. Everyone
performed marvelously and the crowd was
loving it. This was also the location where
Ben Colen dubbed Carroll, “I love the 90’s,”
in reference to Carroll’s enthusiastic performance.
Being that we were in the interior of the
state, the heat took its toll and we retired
from the park to a mini-ramp beneath a
tattoo shop for some local fare, which in
Florida means Cuban Food. The owner of
Phaze has a friend that owns a catering
company so he had loads of delicious food
delivered to the ramp.
I learned that Le Chon is baby pig, or piglet, and
that piglet is great eating. I also learned
about bugs and how they bite and had to
borrow a locals bug spray. Unfortunately everyone
was having the same problem and the insects and
that dudes bug spray got tapped in about
42 seconds. After the crew loaded up on
piglet we were ready to hit the road again.
With the bigger crew, we had two vans now
and I somehow got moved to the clean van
on this stint. Aaron was piloting the clean
van and gave me a lecture about open
container tickets and made me agree to
pay the fine as well as the increase in his
insurance premium if he happened to get
a ticket because of my open container. O f
co u r s e h e d i d n ’ t b o t h e r t o e x p l a i n t h i s
to Koston, t h a t d u d e g e t s away w i t h
everything.
“HOW WOULD I EXPLAIN CRABS...”
When we finally got to Gainesville, everyone was
bushed. After a demo in the hot Florida sun,
loads of Cuban food and plenty of road sodas
everyone was in need of some sleep. We entered
the hotel room and were greeted by a large roach
that had passed away in the center of our room.
Sam hit the bathroom and commented on three
more scattering when he turned on the light. I
decided to wind down outside and lurk around
from room to room in hope of some unexpected
portraits. Luckily, I came upon Carroll shaving
his torso. I figured he too must’ve seen some of
our uninvited guests and deiced to shake the
torso rug in an effort to give them one less place
to take shelter.
Our mission in Gainesville was solely to hit the
streets, no demos, no signings, just shredding. By
the end of the day Ishod was back on his board.
After a couple crooked grinds and feebles on a
local hand rail he was back in full effect. I was
thrilled with the progress he’d made, not just
for him & the rest of the squad but also in hopes
that it would detract from me. The heat, beer,
baby pig and 24 hour sweat cycle was getting
to me by this point. I left my camera bag at one
spot, but Carroll spotted it. Ben made these big
eyes and Carroll shook his head in disbelief as I
walked back to the van. I was also convinced I
had contracted West Nile and had a nagging
concern that I may have also caught some
sort of STD from the hotel room. How would
I explain crabs to my wife? When I was a kid
my mom had a friend who contracted herpes
from a toilet seat, or at least that is what she
told her then husband. It came out later that
she had got it the old fashioned way, from a
penis that wasn’t her husbands. I had told my
wife about this woman and her herpes but I
was certain that she wouldn’t buy my Days Inn crabs for a second. I spread my paranoia as I explained Human Botfly to the guys that night over beers by the pool. I even
found a video of some being removed. If you aren’t familiar with human bot fly, it’s a fly that lay eggs on people and the larvae hatch on your skin and burrow into your flesh
where they grow into adult size flies. I confirmed their habitation in Florida and made sure everyone was aware.
“...HURT OR SICK OR DRUNK...”
Next morning we hit the road for Orlando. We got in mid-day, checked into our much nicer
than the previous rooms and then rendezvoused with our tour guide, Chris. Chris happens
to be a friend of Ishod’s and hence skated extremely well and often. We headed towards the
demo and some warm up spots while Sam went to pick up Rick from the airport. We all met
at the next demo at Midtown. There was a great turn out with loads of kids, the only problem
was that they were all skating! In Every direction, on every obstacle. It was downright crash up
derby. The shop guys ended up shutting the kids down and the demonstration commenced.
Shane did a Big Flip Backside Tailslide on a bump to ledge, twice. Carroll flew around and
garnered more “I LOVE THE 90’s” from Ben. Rick got some too. It was the first full participation
I’ve seen. Someone is usually hurt or sick or drunk and ends up sidelined. Product toss
was gnarly, a kid ended up with a cast on his arm at the bottom of a dog pile. After
the boys signed some autographs and we headed back to the hotel. Being that Rick
was now in attendance, we were pretty basketball fan heavy. We hit a local sports bar
for some nachos, refreshments, and to watch the big game, Lakers obviously. This was
where Koston really started coming in handy. We get to the sports bar and the waiter
brings over a couple of pitchers right away. A local recognized Eric and sent over another
round for us. The free beers were great, but it was when the manager came over and
offered to “hook us up” if Eric could sign a few stickers of some sort. His kids skated and
he was on track to be the coolest dad in Orlando that night. There were twelve of us and
we ate and drank for about 2 hours. It cost us $43.00. The sports bar closed early and
the game wasn’t over yet. We were told to hit a place called, Jake & Mickey’s where we
could finish the game. We got there and we’re quickly greeted by the owner this time.
“SHE’LL FUCK EVERY ONE OF YOU”
He too was a fan of the Frost Man and decided that he was “supposed to get us drunk” and asked what we wanted. We asked for beers but he mandated
we choose any bottle of our liking. We arrived at Jameson and he happily brought one over, cracked it open and popped a pour spout in. No shot glasses
here folks; we would be doing pour spouts straight down the hatch, TJ style. This bottle, the camera flashes, & people coming over to get a photo with
Eric got a ton of attention so we decided to share the bounty with some locals. Sam had a good trick where he would demand doing the pouring and fill
some friendly ladies mouths with whisky until it was literally brimming out and all over their tops. One of the guys that was with these ladies pointed right
at one of them and mentioned casually that, “she’ll fuck every one of you”. I forgot to ask if he meant all at once or one at a time. Rick and Sean had a bet
on the game and Sean won. Rick was upset by his loss and decided the best way to get even with Sean would be to throw a Tequila soaked lime at the bar ’s
nice shiny plasma. The owner of the bar was luckily watching the game with us and got to see this firsthand. We said sorry and I got some towels from the
bar and cleaned it up. We all got well lit up that night, things definitely got blurry for most of us. I woke up to a telephone ringing and Sam answering with
a slightly panicked, “Oh shit, you’re hear?” He flew out of bed, through on clothes and was out the door. I drink quite a bit, and whiskey is my go to, but
I felt like shit, which meant that Sam was most likely still drunk or had a hangover of epic proportions. I felt bad and wanted to do something for him but
decided staying in bed and pretending to be asleep would be the best for the both of us. He got back and explained how Tony’s flight had gotten in early.
When Tony pulled the van door open to throw his bag in a beer can came rolling out into the gutter, picture perfect intro to a trip for Tony.
We started the next morning off at a warm up spot near the new Amway Center, home to the Orlando Magic. Some random kid who worked in one of the
pro shops recognized Eric from like 200 feet away and before we knew it the kid was running over with a fully embroidered custom Orlando Magic jersey
sporting a 04 on the front and FOURSTAR on the back. Orlando Loves Koston. This got Rick in the mood and he decided to buy Magic tickets for all 13 of
us, for the game that night, great start to the day.
We warmed up and hit this abandoned building spot with a lot of half-full spray paint cans. All of us enjoyed some good old fashioned graffiti while a few
of the boys skated the steps and the hubbas. We got a cool triples run with 90’s Carroll, Malto and Ishod and lots of team building was taking place. We
breezed on over to those brick quarter pipes that have been in circulation for years and logged more clips and before we knew it, it was nearly game time,
so we headed on over to Amway. The game was really good, got to watch Dirk Nowitzki knock the magic out in the last few seconds with his patented one
foot fade away jumper.
Between hitting the streets and yelling out anti-German stuff to Dirk, we were exhausted, We piled in the van and headed back to the hotel. We got there
and everyone began shuffling off to their rooms. That’s when I heard a loud, “Where do you think you’re going?” from across the lot. I turned around and
saw Sam and Tony looking at me. Sam had told Tony that there was a bar called Jake & Mickey’s across the street and he HAD to see it. I shouted out
“YOLO!” and ran for them. We did one last night at Jake and Mickey’s but this time the bar tender didn’t give us bottle service, he didn’t give us anything
actually. It was either the fact that Koston wasn’t with us or maybe the lime Rick fast-balled at his TV. Either way, we enjoyed watching some chubby chicks
fall all over themselves, one even Farley’d a trash can.
“KOSTON SIGNED SOME ONES BABY...”
Pampered and pickled we hit the road for Fort Pierce the next morning. Sam had been
mentioning this stop the whole trip and how, Rob, the shop owner and his family were
excited to show us a good time. Fort Pierce is a pretty small beach community, sleepy
and breezy. When we first pulled into town I think we all got slightly concerned, there
were very few people around, almost creepy quiet. Is there really a shop here? Is there
really a park here? It was about that time that Sam informed us that Undercover was
named such because the owner is an active duty cop in Fort Pierce. Obviously skaters
and cops don’t usually mix well and we were all getting a bit concerned as to how this
stop would play out.
We offloaded and headed for the infamous, Undercover Skateshop. Upon arrival we
discovered where everyone in town was, at the shop. We were escorted into a
small green room in the back of the shop stocked with beer, food trays, and other
refreshments. The guys started signing through a huge line of very enthusiastic
fans. Rob’s family and staff were attentive to every need. The second you hit the trash
can to throw something away they were right there to ask you what you needed next.
Everyone felt comfortable and it was a great precursor to a demo. Koston signed
someone’s baby, our skeptical feelings about our reception quickly disappeared.
The demo was at a newly finished outdoor concrete park. Being that Undercover is one
of the few shops in the Panhandle region of Florida, there were a lot of people in from
surrounding small towns for the event. The park was packed and every skater there was
attempting their finest moves. One guy was flying head high Madonnas to foot plant
down to the lower level of a bowl and slamming hard. The guy was coming in straight
to his hip from about 15 feet out. It made it all that much more unbelievable that he was
probably around 50 and wearing a Crocodile Dundee hat. He was with a very lively guy
by the name of Geitz that was from Burbank and knew Guy. Things kept getting more
and more entertaining until it started raining.
“HE WAS PURIFYING THE ATMOSPHERE...”
Rob quickly explained that the rain
would stop soon and that we should
come over to this backyard mini ramp
for some home cooking and socializing.
We headed to the party and the first
thing I noticed was a man burning some
kind of alter or offering. There was a
woman and her boy sitting next to him
and they were all just watching the fire
quietly. I started snapping photos and
then asked him what he was up to. He
explained that it was something called
Vader Science and that this specific
mixture of cow dung, ghee, and brown
rice was being burned to purify the
atmosphere within an 8 mile radius of
the ramp. He explained it in greater
detail but in short he was trying
to ensure that nothing bad would
happen to anyone on our trip.
Everyone made their way around the property and got comfortable. Carroll, Ishod and Shane
were skating the mini with the locals while Malto inquired of a television where he could catch the
Univ of Kansas Basketball game. The food started rolling in at that point and the rest of the house
filled up. They had ribs, burgers, chicken, fish, shrimp the size of your hand, and a big thing of fresh
oysters. Koston learned how to shuck them from a local and began dishing them up for us all to
enjoy. Malto’s team ended up winning, and this sent the Jayhawks to the College basketball finals,
everyone was screaming and hollering like it was New Year’s Eve. Rick was so excited, he started
a pillow fight with a 9 year old girl we had nicknamed Little Miss Sunshine. All of this in the middle
of the living room as our hosts lined up shots. About the time it seemed to be winding down, Rob
informed us of a bar we should go to for some karaoke, Boozegoise. Things begin to get blurry
at this point but the things I do remember include Sam catching a banana board to the face and
busting his lip, Tony & Brophy jumping on a moving train, and everyone piled in the back of a
Suburban with a questionable driver doing doughnuts in a dirt lot. I don’t remember getting home
that night, but Fort Pierce had given us an unforgettable stay. They really do take their Southern
Hospitality serious, which was very timely and fitting because we were headed for Miami next.
“FUCK IT THERE’S 15 OF US...”
All I kept hearing about Miami was
that it was nothing like the rest of
Florida and how it was certainly
going to be the highlight of
the trip. We met up with Brian
at this point and our roster was
finally full. Being that we were
scheduled to be in Miami for a
few days, Sam secured a a house
for us to stay. The place was in a
really nice part of town but not
the nicest house on the block by
any stretch. It had a pool, a not
hot jacuzzi, a nice kitchen and a
gated courtyard out front. Other
than that, it seemed pretty average compared to what was on
the rest of the block.
We were in Miami primarily to
street skate and visit our friends
at MIA skate shop. They ended
up having a big party for us one
night, Brian got three different
tattoos in two days, and we even
got to hit South Beach for a dip.
Being that we were skating every
day and all staying in one house,
getting out the door was about
a 3 hour ordeal. This was getting
old by the third day. I like to think
on the bright side and figured we
had our whole crew together and
I should make the most of this
downtime and get some good material for the catalog. I’d bounce around from room to room, hit the yard, and track down whatever
images seemed to say, “Our clothes are way better than yours.” While making my way through the front room I noticed a man
standing in the courtyard looking a little out of place. I stood in the doorway and asked him if he needed something. He told me
that he was the previous owner of the house and was wondering if he could come in to take a look around to see what the new
owners did with it. I instantly thought that was strange and felt like I should tell Rick & Tony who were on the couch about the
man and his inquiry. Rick instantly blurted out “Fuck him, we got all our shit in here, tell him no,” and Tony quickly blurted out, “Fuck it,
there’s like 15 of us, what’s he gonna do?” Rick concurred and they both said let him in. The second he walked through the door, Tony flew
off of the couch like a ninja and offered to be the guy’s tour guide. I knew he looked familiar but thought that Tony’s excitement at this point
was just trying to get at Rick a bit.
“IS YOUR NAME IGGY?”
Then Brian walked in with a big grin
and soon enough everyone was in
the living room chattering. Tony and
the guest walked back in the front
room to all of us and Rick blurted
out, “Is your name Iggy?” It was Iggy
Pop, he lightly answered yes and the
cameras flew out in seconds. He was
nice but explained he had places to
be and to make it quick.
We hit the streets and laughed about
it the rest of the trip. If me nearly
kicking Iggy Pop out of his own
house wasn’t enough, that night we
lost Shane. We were all drinking and
eating and chopping it up like usual
when we realized we were missing
Nugget. He likes to hang but is quiet
and never the one to call attention
to himself, so it took us a moment
to catch on to his absence. We were
able to figure out that he made it
back to the house with us so we figured he either decided to hit the city
solo or had some other business to
tend to. It ended up being the later
and the business he was attending to
was skating with Little Wayne, at his
house in his own personal skatepark.
He got back around 2 am and we
were all concerned, “where were you
man?” He quietly explained he had
been contacted by Wayne’s people
to come skate but unfortunately had
to be solo and didn’t want to cause
a scene so he dipped and caught a
cab. Miami is different than the rest
of Florida. Better is debatable, but
different is certain.
“HE KICKED ME CHIPS!”
We had one more stop for a demo and signing at Montessi’s shop in St. Petersburg and everyone was running on fumes at that point. Swollen livers
and sore joints, America’s wang had milked us for just about all we were worth. Brian was injured and flew out of Miami along with Tony & Eric who
both had some prior engagements. We were back down to a smaller crew and headed fora demo that no one seemed too eager to get to. Once the
squad got to work on the course I realized it was just me who wasn’t eager to get there, my unexperience had left me doubtful. Malto went nuts
with flip in flip outs, Brophy and Ishod whizzed around in a fury and Shane did some more video game moves. I don’t say that sarcastically or as an
exzaggeration, it’s true, he’s got special skills. Ben and I observed part of his method and began referring to his demo performances as programing
it in, i.e. A + B up up down etc...you know bear suit shit. After the demo we were informed our hotel was smack dab in the hot zone for party. At that
point I was certain I had added cerosis and emphyzema to my list of ailments but it was the last night, how much more could it hurt? There was a
popular trend with the bars in the area to have a $10 cover for all you can drink. That’s about how much more it could hurt, who ever heard of “ALL
YOU CAN DRINK”. The bar we chose happen to be next door to a tattoo shop that Lance Conklin and his friend run and Ishod decided to get his firts
tattoo. Brophy went for it as well with his 2nd Fourstar installment but had Sam ink draw it up on him freehand. The bar was cool and let us flow
in & out with beers. We partied until the early morning and in our drunken state needed some greasy food. We came upon a walk up window and
began ordering when the kid behind the window just happen to be a huge Mike Carroll fan. He told us to hold on, came and opened up a door and
let us all in the now closed diner. Food orders came up, beer started flowing and we were suddenly locked in to our own private diner with beer on
tap. The kid behind the counter was hyped, we hung out there for a good hour throwing food, vomitting, spilling shit and loving the hell out of life.
At some point Sam decided the french fries Brophy was enjoying would be better suited in his face and crane kicked them straight into an explosion
that covered his face, t-shirt and that mop of his. There were fries dangling out of his head like twigs on a bird nest. “He kicked me chips!” Brophy
yelled out in the most Aussie of aussie drunken slurs and we all laughed so hard we probably woke Meza up in his room which was across the street.
Actually he was probably still up eating key lime pie or something.
We got up the next morning and headed for Tampa. We had left the back seat of our Van there and needed to pick it up before hitting the airport.
The trip had come full circle and not just in terms of geography. We had just lapped a whole state visitng the Mom and Pop shops that support us,
kids that keep those shops open, tour guides that miss work to help make the sessions happen, perfect strangers who never forget their favorite
skater and none of us had a thing to complain about. Except maybe my crabs / cerosis / west nile / bot fly / skin cancer base coat, but who ever
said getting their cherry popped was all lolly pops and gum drops?
