Carrie Noel’s films bring Modern Dance and Film together into the
emerging genre of Dance on Camera. Each film utilizes intricate
choreography, challenging the age-old tradition of watching dance
on-stage. This collection of dance films encourages a keen
awareness of the magical ways to interpret time, space, energy
and story telling. Two new short films, recently shot in Jackson
with local choreographer Kate W. Koshavek, will be included in
the collection.
Art or Furniture? That is always a question for the 20 high school
kids who have been creating sculptures from packing tape and
furniture from kayaks. Y.A.R.D. Art alum, Bland Hoke returned this
past year to help Sam Dowd and Clint Green teach this program.

Gaia and Global Warming:
Women Artists Champion Nature
Curated by Lowery Stokes Sims
ArtTalk: Wednesday, June 24, 7:30pm
Center for the Arts Theater
Panel of Artists: Lowery Stokes Sims, Nancy Mako,
Margaret Werthheim, Nalini Nadkarni
Sponsored in part by the Center of Wonder
Artspace Main Gallery
June 26 – Sept 28, 2009
Artists’ Reception: Friday, June 26, 5:30pm
This exhibition is sponsored by: Community Foundation of Jackson Hole,
Center of Wonder, Linda and Lawrence Perlman, Steven and Roberta
Denning, Marieluise Hessel and the Wyoming Humanities Council in
collaboration with Jackson Hole Center for Global Affairs
Featured Artists: Hope Sandrow, Peggy Diggs, Maya Lin,
Margaret and Christine Wertheim (The Institute for Figuring),
Nancy Mako, and Judy Cotton.
This exhibition will deal with the impact of global warming as
reflected in the visual arts. Since 2006 there literally has been a
explosion of exhibitions, projects and interventions on the themes
of climate change, sustainability and ecological responsibility.
This exhibition distinguishes itself in this rich field of endeavor by
engaging the question raised by Victor Margolin in his essay for
the catalogue of Beyond Green: whether there is an “aesthetics
of stainability.” Margolin expresses his concern about how we
are to critically and theoretically evaluate an art that “moves from
discourse to action…to produce a useful event,” and how work by
artists that are “predominantly practical” functions in the museum or
gallery where people expect visual edification and look for practical
solutions outside those walls.
Artspace Gallery is sponsored in part by: National Endowment for the Arts,
John and Georgene Tozzi, Gerry and Imaging Spence, Artspace Exhibitionists,
Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, Wyoming Arts Council,
Art Association Members, William E. Weiss Foundation,
and Wyoming Council for the Humanities.

UNBROKEN SPIRIT:

Sarah Kariko
Artspace Theater Gallery
June 10 – July 20, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, June 12, 7pm
This exhibition is sponsored by: the Wind River Development Fund,
the Giving Voice Project, the Center for the Arts, and Center of Wonder
With a training crop duct taped to his arm and his long braid
swinging behind, Stanford Addison gentles wild horses off the
plains near his home on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming.
He does this sitting in his wheelchair.
Addison lost the use of his legs nearly 30 years ago when the
truck he was traveling in hit a herd of wild horses. Since his
accident, Addison “learned to make friends with horses again”
and has developed an intuitive approach to horse training.
In the process of working with wild horses, Addison shows
people positive alternatives to many of the obstacles they face.
Social Services and the justice system request his assistance to
help youth find positive ways of dealing with hardships on
the reservation; he helps them draw strength from traditional
Arapaho ways.
Addison’s youth was spent busting broncos and raising hell. After
his accident, he became deeply depressed, unable to face neither
the enormity of the loss of his physical powers nor the strange
healing gifts he had gained. But eventually Addison accepted his
fate. He now lives on the reservation of his youth as a renowned
traditional healer and horse gentler.
His extraordinary transformation has been recorded in Lisa Jones’
book, BROKEN: A Love Story as well as Angelique Midthunder’s
PBS documentary SILENT THUNDER. His life on the reservation
today has been captured in UNBROKEN SPIRIT, an exhibit of
photographs by Sarah Kariko.
Join Stanford Addison and his family and friends, Lisa Jones and
Sarah Kariko for an evening of song, prayer, storytelling through
words and pictures, and a question and answer session
“If we can communicate with a horse,” Stan says, “we can
communicate with each other.”

PHOTOGRAPHS
Ted Nuttall
June 15–19 | Mon–Fri | 9am – 4pm
$625 ($600 members) includes material fees

Though often viewed by many as intimidating and challenging,
painting the figure can be just as approachable as a still life or
landscape and brings with its accomplishment a unique
satisfaction and reward. In his workshop Ted will discuss, with
daily demonstrations and one on one interaction with class
members, how to achieve spontaneity, character and life in your
figure paintings. As he shares with you his approach to the figure
and some specific techniques he uses to bring excitement to his
paintings you will find your paintings taking on a new life and will
have great fun in the process. College and graduate credit

proportions. He will help you investigate the titling, twisting and
bending of volumes that manifest movement. Individual instruction
and guidance will be given daily. College and graduate

with in detail as well as how the planes of the head are revealed
through light and shade. Michael will go beneath the surface to
demonstrate how the muscles of the face create expression.
Beauty is more than skin deep and seeing like an artist involves
knowing what to look for and where to find it. College and

Sustainable Snow Sculpture
Center of Wonder Public Art Ambassador
Imagine hiking up Snow King in mid-August and wandering
through a meandering snow canyon, resting in the shade of a
curling snow wave or pondering the 30 foot tall snow man family.
This summer, the King will be transformed into an eco-friendly
snow sculpture park with the help of snow blankets. Used in
Europe to protect glaciers, snow blankets are currently being
tested in the US to protect terrain park features, and in our case
large-scale snow sculptures! Similar to Cristo’s wrapped buildings,
the blanket will shroud the sculptural form until the end of the
summer, culminating in a surprise unveiling event. This project is
suited for people with big ideas who want to create progressive
public art! This is a volunteer project. Please call the Center of
Wonder to participate.

Portrait of an Art Association Member:
rudy boreggo
Rudy Borrego has been an active Member of the Art Association
since 2000 when he took his first Beginning Ceramics class.
Since then, Rudy has been a regular figure, creating his own
unique work and supervising Open Studio, and serving as an
assistant in Beginning and Intermediate Ceramics classes.
Rudy also served as the Interim Ceramics Studio Manager
in 2006 after Michael Cottrell left and before Sam Dowd
arrived. Rudy taught his first Beginning Ceramics class
for the Art Association this winter. Recently he led the
community in a project to decorate over 700 colorful tiles
for the newly remodeled Brew Pub (if you missed your
chance to create one of these tiles - stay tuned…another
opportunity is coming!)
