Putrajaya Lake is an artificial lake created by
inundating the valleys of Sungai Chuau and
Sungai Bisa
The lake construction was completed in 2002 with
a total area of 400ha.
The fisheries resource of the lake is managed by
the Perbadanan Putrajaya with the assistance of
the Department of Fisheries Malaysia.
The roles of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia
include providing technical advice, supplying fish
seedlings for public restocking and conduct
fisheries resource survey of the lake.

Fishing Pressure
Fishing effort mainly from:
• sanctioned fishing competitions
• illegal fishing
• occasional scientific surveys
• removal of undesirable fish
Challenges and prospects for
scientific studies
Carrying capacity of lake for fisheries
 Effectiveness of public release programs
 Release of foreign species by the public
 Migration of fishes in/out the lake?
Invasive species, breeding seasons
 Fishing pressure vs. protection of
important fish species

Suggestion and
Recommendation
A better lake research and monitoring
program – periodical data is needed
 Involvement of local universities in
fisheries study of Putrajaya Lake
 Closure of Putrajaya Lake to fishing
activities during normal days (except
during annual fishing competitions)

Acknowledgement
Perbadanan Putrajaya for assistance
given during fish surveys and for
providing fisheries related information of
Putrajaya Lake.
 Fisheries resource surveys were
conducted by staff from FRI GL:
