HEADING
10 books
to inspire travel
Reading about far-flung locations stirs the wanderlust
in all of us. Here are 10 of our favourite tomes to ignite
the travel bug through epic journeys, gourmet trails,
self-reflection and humorous tales.
1. The Beach
by Alex Garland
(1996)
The search for an idyllic, hidden island
in the Gulf of Thailand and the idealistic
community of international backpackers
who reside there struck a chord with
travellers seeking authentic experiences
off the well-worn tourist track. Through
the course of the novel, the beach and
its inhabitants come under threat from
both inside and outside forces and utopia
remains an unobtainable ideal.
2.
On the Road
by Jack Kerouac
(1957)
Heralded as a defining novel for the postwar Beat Generation and one of the seminal
road trip novels, the semi-autobiographical
On the Road is based on the travels of Jack
Kerouac and his friends across America in
the late 1940s on a quest for meaning and
12
a sense of belonging against a backdrop
of jazz, drugs and beat poetry.
3. The Motorcycle Diaries
by Ernesto Guevara
(1993)
The adventures of then-medical student
Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and his friend
Alberto Granada covers some 8000
kilometres as the duo seek to understand
South America and themselves in this
memoir. The epic journey involves nine
months of travel by various modes of
transport through Argentina, Chile, Peru,
Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama
and Florida in 1952.
4.
Holy Cow
by Sarah MacDonald
(2004)
A classic fish-out-of-water tale, Aussie
journalist Sarah starts out as a petulant
Westerner in New Delhi when her
journalist partner is posted there.
While navigating the culture and traditions
of India, Sarah adjusts to the chaos of
life in India and takes a journey into her
spiritual self by sampling various religious
philosophies during her stay on the
sub-continent.
5.
Eat Pray Love
6.
Down Under
by Elizabeth Gilbert
(2006)
This is a travel memoir you either love or
hate; either way it provokes debate and
also spawned a wave of solo vacations by
women keen to emulate the author’s year
of self-exploration. The novel takes you
on a journey through Italy, India and Bali.
by Bill Bryson (2000)
It’s always interesting to obtain an outsider’s
view of your home and Bill Bryson offers

HEADING
his signature humorous slant on a preSydney Olympics Australia in Down Under.
Traversing the country by rail and car, Bill
ponders the legacy of early settlers in the
outback, the populous cities of the East
Coast and Australia’s natural wonders.
7. M y Life in France
by Julia Child
(2006)
One for the foodies, Julia Child’s
autobiography details how she fell in
love with the French way of life and cuisine
while living in Paris during the 1950s and
1960s. A household name in the US, the
book details Julia’s attempts to learn
French, study at the Cordon Bleu cooking
school and find her calling. Driven
to share her passion, Julia wrote a
cookbook, Mastering the Art of French
Cooking, introducing the culinary
concepts to Americans.

8.
In Patagonia
by Bruce Chatwin (1977)
Using a then-revolutionary style of travel
writing consisting of historic references
woven together with witty anecdotes
and fictionalised accounts, In Patagonia
details the author’s six-month trip to
South America in 1974 to 1975 and his
ruminations on wanderlust.
9. The Sun Never Sets:
Travels to the Remaining
Outposts of the British Empire
by Simon Winchester (1985)
Offering both a snapshot of the colonies
under the British Empire and these farflung islands after handover and attaining
nationhood, Simon Winchester criss-crosses
the globe for three years from Antarctica
to the Caribbean and Asia to Europe and
uncovers the relics and forgotten quirks
of the Commonwealth. The book was
reprinted in 2003 with an update about
the Hong Kong handover.
10. The Songs of Sapa:
Stories and Recipes
from Vietnam
by Luke Nguyen (2009)

Cities for
music
lovers
Whether it’s a pilgrimage to
Graceland or experiencing
a world-class concert in a
renowned venue, if music is the
catalyst for your travels, here are
some rhythmic cities around the
world that may even inspire a
playlist for the flight!
Havana, Cuba.
Vienna for classical
New Orleans for jazz
Considered the capital of classical music,
Vienna is the place to see live concerts
with performances happening every day
of the year. Grand European concert
venues such as Musikverein and Vienna
Konzerthaus contain hallowed halls with
suitably sumptuous surrounds where
Strauss, Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn
once performed. Catching a recital by
the renowned Vienna Philharmonic
Orchestra or the famed Vienna Boys’
Choir in their hometown is truly a must-see
experience. For further insight into the
history of this city, walk Mozart’s Vienna
with a self-guided tour to some of the
famous composer’s local haunts such as
Mozarthaus, St Stephen’s Cathedral and
his place of death.
While not the only city to host such an
event, the 10-day New Orleans Jazz &
Heritage Festival is one of the biggest on
the festival circuit with a suitably eclectic
line-up. Lovers of snappy syncopation
and the swung note can go on a journey
through zydeco, gospel, bluegrass, funk,
Cajun, rock and Afro-Caribbean alongside
myriad jazz styles in the birthplace of
the genre. Previous Jazz Fest headliners
include Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam,
Elvis Costello, B.B. King and Miles Davis.
Held around April to May annually, make
sure you also explore the historic French
Quarter and catch the swinging beats
drifting from the downtown music clubs.
Also consider: Buenos Aires
New York for
Broadway musicals
Also consider: Montreal International
Jazz Festival
The Broadway Theater District in
Manhattan contains 40 theatres and around
50 shows on at any time, not including
Off-Broadway productions, with over 12
million people attending a performance
in 2012. From plays to musicals and
classics to new favourites, seeing a show
on Broadway is one of the quintessential
New York experiences. Popular current
musicals include The Lion King, Wicked,
Kinky Boots and Motown the Musical. One
way to do Broadway in style is with an allinclusive hotel package. Or, you can try for
discounted same-day performance tickets
at the TKTS Booth in Duffy Square for
less-popular shows.
Also consider: London’s West End
Manchester for post-punk,
new wave and rave
The birthplace of post-punk and
Madchester, this post-industrial UK city
spawned many seminal acts of the ‘80s and
‘90s and continues to be a popular music
leader. The Sex Pistols were championed
in Manchester long before the rest of
Britain. Then came the Factory Records
era, where post-punk groups such as Joy
Division (later New Order) and The Smiths
defined the sound of the ‘80s. The latelamented The Hacienda nightclub (owned
by Factory Records) heralded the ‘90s
Madchester scene with tunes by The Stone
Roses, Happy Mondays and The Charlatans,
with Oasis one of the city’s premier music
exports. Venture into one of over 30 live
music venues to hear upcoming acts or
make a date at one of Manchester’s many
music festivals.
Also consider: Glasgow
Havana for Latin music
The Buena Vista Social Club documentary
introduced Cuban music and musicians to
the world stage, but nothing beats a trip
to Havana to soak up the ‘40s ambience
of a bygone musical era. Little kids swivel
their hips on the streets amid decaying
‘50s American muscle cars and historic
architecture and while this may seem
daunting to non-rhythmic Westerners,
there’s plenty of spots to enjoy the music
and learn the dance styles of Cuba. Rumba
is an intoxicating mix of African percussion
and Latino rhythms, and the best place
to experience this genre is on the streets
or head to music venues and clubs, such
as Hotel Nacional with authentic Cuban
rumba groups in attendance. Get a feel
for Cuban heritage and five centuries of
architectural history at the atmospheric
Old Havana barrio.

Overwater
Bungalows
When it comes to an idyllic island stay and the ultimate ocean view, nothing
says relaxation and luxury like an overwater bungalow. It’s where you can
truly immerse yourself in the seascape without actually being at sea!
Also known as overwater villas or bures,
you’ll find examples of this unique
accommodation dotted all over the
South Pacific and Indian Ocean as well as
selected resort spots in Southeast Asia,
Central America and the Caribbean.
Origins of the overwater bungalow
While you would think that this style of
accommodation has existed for centuries,
and certainly many cultures still reside in
floating houses, the concept of overwater
bungalows actually originated in the 1960s.
The French Polynesian island of Moorea
was the first to introduce overwater
bungalows to the world at the Club Bali
Hai Moorea resort. The resort’s popularity
rocketed after a chance feature in the
December 1962 issue of Life magazine,
and the concept spread throughout
Tahiti and the South Pacific, Maldives and
eventually to the Caribbean in the 1980s.
A major drawcard of the overwater
bungalow is the panes of glass built into
the floors, which allow an up-close look at
the marine world below.
Unique features and designs
The humble facade of the overwater
bungalow only hints at the bliss to be
found within its walls where traditional
designs and natural materials meet
modern luxuries.
Most of these standalone villas also have
a private balcony where you can snorkel
right from your deck. Choose a resort
with overwater bungalows that hover over
a coral garden to see the most diverse
range of technicolour aquatic life.
Overwater bungalows typically comprise
thatched palm leaf roofs and handcrafted
timber held together by sturdy bush
poles and coconut fibres, anchored deep
into the sand with concrete pillars and
connected to the main resort buildings
and beaches by wooden walkways.
The luxury experience
Exuding intimacy and romance, it’s
no wonder overwater bungalows are
a popular choice for honeymoons
and couples getaways and a dream
destination for many travellers. The
appeal of the overwater bungalow
lies in their seclusion and idyllic
location coupled with personalised
yet unobtrusive service.
These private villas offer all the luxury
amenities you would expect from a
5-star hotel, such as stunning interiors,
air-conditioning, plasma TVs, music
systems, king beds and of course,
world-class ocean views from both
inside and out.
Caressed by balmy breezes atop
turquoise lagoons in a tropical
setting, wake to the sound of water
gently lapping at your doorstep and
breakfast brought to your bungalow
by flower-covered canoe.

to a minimum. Wildlife is virtually fearless
and unaffected by human presence,

of species in its natural habitat. Experience
