Dear Friends, Patients and Supporters,
Being the best doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a journey that requires an unwavering commitment to excellence. In 2007, Carroll Hospital Center
made many positive strides in our quest for the best—strides we’re pleased to highlight in this year’s annual report.
Perhaps the most important milestone was working with the Studer Group, a health care consulting firm, to design a roadmap for our quest, which
we call our “Journey to Excellence.” Key points on this roadmap have included a new mission and vision and a recommitment to our core values.
Above all, we want this journey to inspire our community members, board members, associates, physicians, volunteers, patients and visitors to work
together to make Carroll Hospital Center the best place to work, practice medicine and receive care. And from this report, you’ll see we’re well on
our way.
Carroll Hospital Center continues to earn recognition for our outstanding clinical initiatives. For the second consecutive year, our diabetes
education program received the prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate, a seal of approval that attests to our
high-quality diabetes programs and educational initiatives. In yet another testament to our remarkable care and staff, our Center for Wound Care
and Hyperbaric Medicine became the first clinical hyperbaric medicine facility in Maryland to receive accreditation from the distinguished
Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS).
Elsewhere on our campus, we opened an inpatient hospice facility and four state-of-the-art operating rooms. We also launched an expansion of our
Level II Special Care Nursery, designed for babies born as early as 32 weeks. None of these initiatives would have been possible, however, without the
support of our generous donors, who contributed $2.8 million in 2007.
As always, we’re grateful to our outstanding physicians and specialists. Each plays a crucial role in our success, combining advanced expertise with
heartfelt compassion to offer our patients the very best medical care.
We’re proud to be the region’s health care provider of choice, and we thank all of you for inspiring us to give our best each and every day.

The Journey Begins Here
A journey to excellence requires thousands of steps in the right direction. But that journey cannot begin until there is a vision for the final outcome. In 2007, Carroll Hospital
Center embarked on our “Journey to Excellence” by forming a committee to revitalize
our mission and vision. The process resulted in two powerful statements that perfectly
complement our existing SPIRIT values (Service, Performance, Innovation, Respect,
Integrity and Teamwork) and also fit well into our new business initiatives and six
Pillars of Excellence (Service, Quality, Financial, People, Growth and Community).
“We worked diligently and thoughtfully to craft statements that would recognize our
history and form the foundation for all we do into the future,” says Charles O. Fisher,
Jr., president of the law firm Walsh & Fisher and the new chairman of the Carroll
Hospital Center Board of Directors. “To reflect the tremendous changes in health care
over the years, we placed special emphasis on words like quality, community, commitment
and good health through all stages of life.”
Already, our new mission and vision have guided important decisions, such as refocusing on maintaining a completely smoke-free campus, creating special outreach programs
in the community and establishing a greater presence in various medical specialties.

Unwavering Dedication
The associates at Carroll Hospital Center know that they perform worthwhile work.
They recognize that what they do makes a difference in people’s lives and, as a result,
are committed to providing exceptional care. A prime example is Mary Ellen Gannon,
B.S.N., M.S.N., W.O.C.N., who was named 2007 Associate of the Year.
A member of the hospital staff since 1986, Gannon works as an enterostomal therapist.
In addition to assessing and treating wounds, Gannon helps prepare ostomy patients for
surgery, runs support groups and visits nursing homes, often after her shift has ended.
Gannon was selected to receive this high honor by her co-workers, who cited her unwavering dedication to her job, which includes working long hours to ensure each patient
receives exceptional care. “Mary Ellen’s energy and passion are truly inspiring,” says
Leslie Simmons, R.N., B.S.N., M.A., chief operating officer and senior vice president
of patient care services. “She exemplifies our core values in her service to others.”

participation in the Associate Annual Fund. In addition, associates avidly support
the Auxiliary through thousands of dollars in purchases at The Candy Striper Gift
Shop and The White Rabbit Thrift Shop, along with support of special in-house events.
This type of support would not be possible without the hospital’s commitment to our
people—a commitment that was recognized when Carroll Hospital Center was awarded
the 2007 Workplace Excellence Award and Health & Wellness Trailblazer Award by
the Alliance for Workplace Excellence. These awards were created to honor visionary
employers who are creating workplaces where employees can experience professional
fulfillment and personal wellness, not only at work, but also at home and within the
community. These awards are a tribute to the hospital’s vision and the employees
who bring it to life. In addition, the hospital received the Carroll County Department
of Economic Development first annual Workforce Development Award for our investment in the personal and professional development of our associates and physicians.
Gannon is one of hundreds of associates who feel a personal connection to Carroll
Hospital Center and our patients. In fiscal year 2007, associates supported the
hospital’s programs and services through $123,000 in donations, which included
support of special events, contributions to memorialize loved ones and milestone

Irene Danner
Record-Setting Generosity
It would take more than 16 years for a full-time employee to work as many hours as
Irene Danner has spent volunteering at Carroll Hospital Center. This year, “Miss
Irene,” as she is fondly known, reached 36,000 volunteer hours, setting a Carroll
Hospital Center record that no one can imagine will ever be broken.
For the past 30 years, this energetic, 89-years-young Westminster resident has volunteered at the hospital several days a week. Up until a few years ago, she helped discharge
patients. Now, she faithfully works at the hospital’s main information desk, greeting
patients, visitors and vendors. It’s a perfect fit for her warm and welcoming personality.
“I look forward to my days at the hospital,” Miss Irene says. “I feel like I’m part of
a family. I like meeting people and seeing the young adults who were once junior
volunteers from way back. I’m amazed they still remember me. Volunteering gives
me a wonderful reason to get out of the house, and I really enjoy it.”
At the spring volunteer recognition reception, Mary Richards, director of volunteer

“She is someone we can always count on to pitch in wherever we need help,” says
Richards, who also nominated Miss Irene as one of Maryland’s Most Beautiful People,
an award given annually by the State of Maryland’s You Are Beautiful Campaign.
Miss Irene is one of many volunteers who go above and beyond to help Carroll
Hospital Center achieve our mission. In calendar year 2007 alone, 300 adult and junior
volunteers contributed more than 51,000 hours of their time to work at the information
desk, gift shop, thrift shop, Dixon Ambulatory Care Center reception desk and in
30 departments throughout the hospital. In addition, the Carroll Hospital Center
Auxiliary donates an average of $250,000 each year to fund vital programs and service
enhancements at the hospital. These volunteers truly are “all-stars.”

The Best and Brightest
Health care is only as good as the people who provide it. That’s why Carroll Hospital Center
makes every effort to attract and retain the highest quality physicians. To enhance these efforts,
the hospital recently created the post of chief medical officer/senior vice president of medical
affairs and named Kevin Smothers, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., to the new role. Dr. Smothers’ a member
of the Board of Directors of the Maryland Healthcare Education Institute and formerly physician
director of the Medicine Service Line at Franklin Square Hospital, now serves as a liaison
between Carroll Hospital Center’s medical staff, clinical leadership and administration.
“I chose to come here because I believe in the values of the organization and am confident in the
quality and skills of our physicians,” Smothers explains. “Health care is continuously evolving
and, to keep up, we need to attract new physicians and make Carroll Hospital Center a place
where they want to practice medicine. We want our doctors to have all the resources they need
to provide the very best care.”
Another way the hospital shows our appreciation for the medical team is our annual Doctor’s
Day celebration, where our Physician of the Year is announced. In 2007, general surgeon Stephan
Hochuli, M.D., received this prestigious award for his exceptional teamwork and integrity.
“Dr. Hochuli is a well-respected member of our medical staff—not only by virtue of his
clinical ability, but also by the outstanding service he provides to patients and their families,”
says John Sernulka, president and CEO of Carroll Hospital Center. “His ongoing dedication
and clinical expertise have contributed to our continued success in quality patient care.”
In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Hochuli serves on the hospital’s Cancer Committee,
which develops quality improvement objectives and other initiatives related to cancer care.
He also is a member of the Medical Staff Quality Committee, a multidisciplinary group that
oversees quality of care.

A Special Place for Healing
First impressions mean a lot. Sarah Lentz, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.S., remembers The
Breast Center from her initial visit to Carroll Hospital Center, when she came to interview for a surgical position. “I was so impressed with all the services it offered,” she
recalls. “It’s a really special place and a wonderful resource for all women, especially
those with cancer and their families.”
Dr. Lentz made quite an impression on us too. In 2007, she joined the practice of John
A. Steers, M.D., as a general surgeon, and recently, she was appointed medical director
of The Women’s Place. In addition to her busy surgical practice, where she performs a
variety of traditional and advanced minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Lentz is leading
the effort to ensure quality health care for women in our community—especially those
who are battling breast cancer.

them know what’s ahead and ease their concerns. She also can guide them to specific
services offered through The Breast Center and The Women’s Place based on their
unique needs. These services might include complementary health treatments, such as:
massage, acupuncture, Reiki or reflexology; an onsite boutique that offers a selection
of breast forms, bras, wigs, hats and turbans; the hospital’s Breast Cancer Support
Group; educational programs for patients and loved ones; or an information library of
books, tapes and DVDs.
“The Breast Center provides comfort and continuity during a difficult time,”
Dr. Lentz explains. “We can facilitate the process and also provide much-needed
support. Most importantly, this high level of coordination ensures that we provide each
patient with the most timely, streamlined care possible.”
That’s why The Breast Center is there every step of the way, helping women coordinate

A Healthy Start
Carroll Hospital Center supports the health of the community throughout all stages of
life—even when that life arrives a little sooner than planned. The birth of a child—an
experience usually filled with happiness and wonder—can suddenly turn stressful if
the baby is born prematurely. Now parents of the hospital’s youngest patients can rest
easier with the expansion of the Level II Special Care Nursery.
Currently under renovation, the nursery will double in size and offer 10 specialty
beds equipped with the latest neonatal technology, including state-of-the-art cardiorespiratory centralized monitors. The new nursery also gives parents more privacy and
space to bond with their newborns and learn about their babies’ special needs and
individualized plans of care. The expansion was fully funded by the Carroll Hospital
Center Foundation through proceeds from the 17th Annual Carroll Golf Classic, and
a $250,000 pledge from the Auxiliary.
“The expansion enables us to treat the growing number of premature babies within our
community,” says Linda Grogan, R.N.C., B.S.N., director of women’s and children’s
services. “It also allows parents to remain close to home and family while spending as
much time as possible with their newborns and taking an active role in their care.”
Other young patients and their parents are singing the praises of Carroll Hospital
Center’s newly renovated pediatrics unit. Relocated to the third floor of the main
hospital, the unit features seven private rooms appointed with bathrooms, televisions
and video gaming systems. In addition, a bright and cheerful playroom offers patients
and family members a beautiful view of the Carroll County horizon.

Streamlined Surgery
No one looks forward to surgery. But when patients need to go to the
operating room, they want an experience that offers the latest technology, minimizes pain, promotes faster recovery and gives their medical
team the resources they need right at their fingertips. This is the experience they will find at Carroll Hospital Center.
The addition of four new operating rooms (ORs) in July gives our
expert surgeons the ability to perform some of the most sophisticated
surgeries using the latest minimally invasive techniques in a variety of
specialties—from gynecology and neurosurgery to orthopaedics and
urology. Each OR is equipped with an array of high-tech features, including large plasma screens with
enhanced video displays; programmable adjustments for lighting, room temperature and instrumentation
pressure; an efficient supply management system; and a mounted equipment boom to promote safety and
infection control.
The new operating rooms are part of an $11.5 million project that will double the hospital’s capacity
for surgery. The project also includes renovations to four existing ORs opened in January 2008 and construction of a new post-anesthesia care unit to open in April 2008.
Long-time hospital supporters Wayne and Bonnie Lockard believed in the importance of this project so
much that they made a significant contribution toward its completion. In recognition of their generosity,
the hospital named the new surgical waiting room in their honor.
“We recognize that, at our age, the need for convenient, quality medical care will be ever-increasing,”
explains Wayne, who for more than 30 years has served on numerous Carroll Hospital Center committees
and currently holds the post of secretary-treasurer on the hospital’s board of directors. “The new ORs will
allow the hospital to expand its patient care services in a state-of-the-art setting.”
Adds Bonnie, “ We are blessed to possess resources that allow us to support important community institutions.
Having been patients at Carroll Hospital Center and closely watching and participating in its evolution, we
feel a certain ownership. We will always view Carroll Hospital Center as our community hospital.”

Quality of Life
For many years, Carroll Hospice has been recognized for the remarkable way our staff encourages
patients to live the remaining days of their lives with dignity and in comfort. Considered the model for
quality, compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness or injury, hospice offers a multidisciplinary approach to expert medical care, pain management and emotional and spiritual support.
Up until this year, Carroll Hospice provided services solely in the patient’s home or in a nursing home
or assisted living facility. But in January 2007, a Carroll Hospice inpatient facility opened, giving
terminally ill patients a place to receive around-the-clock care and spend quality time with family and
friends. The facility includes eight private rooms, all tastefully designed by interior decorator Susan
Underwood Leahy and equipped with all the comforts of home.
Patients and families of Carroll Hospice regularly tell us how much they appreciate the care and
support they have received. The important work of Carroll Hospice also is recognized by several
foundations that support hospice programs and services.
One example is the Maryland Home & Community Care Foundation, which in 2007, awarded Carroll
Hospice an $18,000 grant to enhance the McGinnis Bereavement Life Support Center. The foundation
supports new initiatives that are dedicated to improving the quality of life for those in need of health
and supportive services.
“The Carroll Hospice project was one of ten selected to receive grant monies this year, out of a total of
71 applicants,” says Linda Safran, CFRE, executive director of the foundation. “There was something
that sparkled about this idea to our board. The projects that are selected are typically innovative and
have an significant impact on people’s health and well-being.”
The McGinnis Bereavement Life Support Center provides hospice patients and their families access
to experienced bereavement counselors, support groups and a comprehensive resource library.
Additionally, staff of the center offers a bereavement skills training course for teachers, counselors,
nurses and members of the faith community. Soon, Care Pages, an online gathering place for families
and friends, will be added to the center’s offerings.

“The community gives us so much, and it’s important that we give back,” explains Ellen
Finnerty Myers, vice president of development. “We have many impressive professionals
on our team who can provide valuable expertise and support to organizations. These
relationships benefit all of us.”
Myers is one of these professionals who is reaching out, serving as chair of the Carroll County
Chamber of Commerce for 2007. Carroll Hospital Center has been a member of the Chamber
since our founding. And as the second largest employer in the county, it’s important for us to
stay well-connected to the business community.
Other hospital executives also sit on boards for a variety of organizations, including the
Community College Foundation, Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Carroll
County Department of Economic Development and Carroll County Historical Society. In
addition, our associates are members of several civic organizations and enthusiastically support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and the United Way, to name a few.
“There’s a saying that goes, ‘Give work to busy people and they get it done,’” Myers says.
“At Carroll Hospital Center, we see hundreds of thousands of patients each year. For our
associates to take time to give back to the community is remarkable. It is also a testament to

The Next Generation
Experts predict that in less than a decade, Maryland could face a shortage of 10,000
nurses. Through a variety of initiatives in The Learning Center, Carroll Hospital
Center is doing our part to avert this potential crisis by offering training programs
and scholarships to prepare the future leaders of health care.
Nurses in The Learning Center also teach annual CPR classes at the Carroll County
Career and Technology Center. Taking the classes allows students who are studying to
be phlebotomists or certified nursing assistants to come to Carroll Hospital Center during their second semester to complete the skills component of their programs.
To encourage hospital employees to further their education in a nursing or allied
health field, two $1,000 scholarships are offered each spring to staff members who
demonstrate academic excellence and involvement in community activities. In addition,
through the Libman Nursing Scholarship Fund, the Foundation provides two Carroll
Community College nursing students each with a $2,000 scholarship. The hospital also
offers nursing internships that are coordinated through a variety of local colleges and
universities, such as Carroll Community College, the Community College of Baltimore
County, Frederick Community College, Villa Julie College and Towson University.
Two other unique offerings, Job Shadow Days and Share Days, are perfect for members
of the community who are thinking about careers in health care. For a few hours or an
entire day, participants can sample a variety of areas—including nursing, radiology,
physical therapy, lab and dietary—by following hospital staff on the job.
“Many of these programs have tremendous results,” says Mary Masimore, interim
director of The Learning Center. “They regularly turn out students who ultimately
become nurses or other types of health professionals.”

The Heart of the Matter
The battle against heart disease—the leading cause of death in the United States and in
Carroll County—can only be won with a strategic defense that combines education,
assessment and support. Because the condition has been identified as a major health concern in our area, Carroll Hospital Center pulls out all the stops in the area of prevention.
“Heart disease has become an epidemic in this country and increasingly affects people of
all ages,” says Melissa Murdock, R.N., B.S.N., a community educator in The Learning
Center. “As the community’s source for health care and awareness, it’s our responsibility
to provide resources to prevent cardiovascular disease throughout all stages of life.”
This effort begins with free blood pressure screenings five times a month at a variety of
locations across the county. Since 1999, the hospital also has sponsored annual cardiac
assessments each April. The assessments include an EKG and screenings for blood
pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and body fat. With the summary of their test
results, each participant receives an evaluation of their risk factors and recommendations from a cardiologist.
In addition, Carroll Hospital Center sponsors the Heart of the Matter education series
for individuals who are coping with heart disease and their loved ones and those interested in prevention. The hospital also offers a variety of educational resources through the
resource library in The Women’s Place. And each February, special events and promotions are held in honor of National Heart Month.
As part of the county’s Children’s Heart Health Action Team, Carroll Hospital Center
also supports Project ACES (Active Children Excel in School), a two-week physical
activity challenge that invites adolescents in grades one through five in public and private schools across the county to improve heart health by making healthier choices and
participating in frequent physical activity. These efforts—and more—are all part of how
Carroll Hospital Center is getting to the heart of this important issue.

Foundation Funding
Priorities Fiscal Year 2007
Carroll Hospital Center thrives each year because of the generous
support of our more than 3,200 donors. With total cash contributions
in fiscal year 2007 of nearly $2 million, private support plays a significant
role in assuring that Carroll Hospital Center reaches the margin of
excellence that philanthropy allows. Because of the generosity of our
thousands of families, businesses, corporations, foundations and the
Carroll Hospital Auxiliary – we were able to fully fund the expansion
and renovation of our Level II Special Care Nursery, and open four new
state-of-the-art Operating Suites. The support of our donors assures
that we are able to implement new programs and services that our
patients expect and deserve, that we can stay on the cutting edge of
information and medical technology, and that we continue to administer
health care with quality and compassion.
Below is a summary of priority needs which the hospital utilized private
support for in Fiscal Year 2007.
