The Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg,
the country of fine dining …
Luxembourg … where the cuisine is outstanding, where the table becomes an art form. International but still
proud of its local roots, Luxembourg gastronomy uses the most outstanding local products: wines and sparkling
wines from the Moselle, liqueurs and beers, meats and charcuterie, products based on spelt, honey, …
Léa Linster, the only woman awarded by the “Bocuse d’Or”, contributes to making Luxembourg the country
with the largest number of starred restaurants per head of population.
In the city centre, in the open country, at the heart of a historic town or in a picturesque village, the rustic
inn or the cosy brasserie with its acclaimed table, Luxembourg gastronomy is a successful blend of the talent,
passion and innovation of the greatest chefs.
Quality above all! The majority of Luxembourg’s own products are protected by labels certifying their
geographic origin or organic quality, for the greatest dining pleasure of gourmets large or small.
Hotels from 1 to 5 stars, hospitable inns, camp sites, apartment hotels, motels, guest houses, rustic gites, holiday
homes, farm accommodation … there is always something for every taste in Luxembourg.

A little city with a big heart
Luxembourg is Europe’s bestkept secret. The capital of one
of the world’s smallest countries
is a vibrant, dynamic city nestled
within romantic, peaceful countryside that gives it plenty of
natural space to breathe. Luxembourg’s visitors tend to focus on
its rich history but today’s city
is a modern, open, friendly place
that has embraced the opportunities of high-tech life without losing
its soul. It is international – people
from 150 different countries now
call it home – where major global
corporate names have come to
take advantage of cutting-edge
technological expertise. 21st century connectivity is even visible in
the streets with the impressive
HotCity WiFi network that brings
together its residents, visitors,
local businesses and the city’s
services. Luxembourg also hosts a
number of EU institutions and more
than 200 financial institutions in its
world-renowned banking and finance
sector.

It is also a capital with a very human
dimension. From small café bars to
Michelin-starred restaurants, the
city enjoys the best in gastronomy
alongside a lively and diverse cultural scene including a number of
popular outdoor festivals throughout the year. Luxembourg has
twice been honoured as European
Capital of Culture and it buzzes
with artistic creativity such as the
music, dance and theatre performances at the Grand Théâtre and
the state-of-the-art Philharmonie.
Luxembourg’s multilingual character is reflected in its variety of exciting stage productions in Luxembourgish, French, German, Dutch
and English. The city also boats a
number of museums highlighting
art, history and nature while the
vestiges of its ancient fortress,
dating from the 9th century, still
remain and are now protected as a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Luxembourg is very much a city
of contrasts: a city among green
countryside, a high-tech centre
amid centuries-old history, a truly
international hub with a local traditional feel.

the castle valleys
Koerich
So many different types of feudal architecture in such close proximity
is exceptional: fortresses in Ansembourg-Haut, Hollenfels, Useldange,
Schoenfels, Septfontaines, Pettingen, Mersch, Baroque castle in Ansembourg-Bas with French garden and mythological avenue, moated
castle in Koerich. Famous personalities such as the count’s daughter
Yolanda of Vianden, the French author Victor Hugo or the Belgian
poet Amélie Picard, have a high regard for the idyllic Eisch valley.
The Eisch valley was once a flourishing site for steel production – long
before the furnaces of the Land of the Red Rocks belched out their
smoke. Today nature has recaptured this abandoned area of shacks.
But if you look closely you can still discover traces from this time. For
example, the numerous caves in which entire miners families lived.
On the river banks the vegetation is in parts very natural, almost
primeval. Today, the Eisch- and Mamer valleys belong to the largest
natural protection zone in Luxembourg.
The national hiking trail of the Valley of the Seven Castles follows
the intricate Eisch valley for 37 kilometres, past its most important
cultural treasures. Away from the main arterial roads the region, with
its peaceful country roads and forest tracks, is not only the stamping
ground of hikers, but cyclists too. There are more than 200 kilometres
of hiking and cycle paths available for energetic visitors. Those who
would like to get to know the region better should plan a tour lasting
several days, stopping off at one of the small individually-run hotels,
at one of the campsites or at the youth hostel at Hollenfels.

The walkable
Luxembourg Ardennes
High plains with extensive fields, slate rocks and steep sloping valleys which display the
most glorious colours in autumn and are strewn with gorse in spring: that is the view which
can be expected from the Luxembourg Ardennes. All around the “Nordstad”, the gateway
to the Ardennes, with the towns and villages along the Sûre, the Wark and the Alzette, the
hiker discovers the unique interplay between geology and nature alongside culture and
history. Numerous castles and palaces transport you to another world.
The Luxembourg Ardennes: also the region of nature parks, of the lake of the Upper-Sûre and
of the Our valley.
This extremely varied area, from the “Nordstad” (Diekirch, Ettelbruck) region of the
Luxembourg Ardennes, also called “Oesling“, poses a rare challenge for nature lovers,
mountain bikers, Nordic walkers and above all for ramblers. With ith its numerous wellsignposted local, national and international rambling paths, it can justifiably be called a
true ramblers’ paradise.
Panoramic Tour
Kilometre-wide river bends, endless wide,
gently undulating high plains covered with
lush greenery or yellow rapeseed, views
deep inside the steep valleys of the Sauer
or the Our, extensive spreads of water on
broad mountain ridges. These are the Luxembourg Ardennes, from Weiswampach
to Diekirch and Ettelbruck.

Bizarre rock formations with names such
as Piteschkummer, Geyerslay, Hohllay
or Perekop are a particular attraction
for nature enthusiasts. Water too has
a special significance in Luxembourg’s
Little Switzerland. Alongside the Sûre,
which is a natural border with Germany
that encourages rambling and cycling,
the scenery is characterised by the mossy,
winding courses of the streams of the
Black and the White Ernz. In addition the
high plains afford wonderful views of the
Lower-Sûre region.
The varied landscape is ideally suited to
cycling and hiking. You can discover the
landscape on the Mullerthal Trail with its
110 km. But there is also plenty of scope
for water sports enthusiasts, climbers
and golfers.
Accommodation and
gastronomy
The Mullerthal Region - Luxembourg’s
Little Switzerland offers accommodation
for every taste: the offer ranges from
well-equipped campsites, self-catering
houses and apartments to a 5-star hotel.
In Echternach you can even stay in five
restored medieval towers. For culinary
wellbeing there are countless first-class
restaurants in the region.

• The “Mullerthal Trail” of 110 km (40, 33 + 37 km) offers great hiking possibilities in
the Mullerthal region - Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland. This big regional trail which
mostly leads over natural paths enables a quite intensive perception of the landscapes
and thus satisfies even high quality expectations of modern hikers. The trail comprises
3 huge parts so that departures can be made in many different points in the region.
The Müllerthal Trail shows all the main scenic characteristics of the region: jungle like
forests, moss grown valleys and the bizarre sandstone rock formations. An extensive
net of well signalled local hikes rounds up the offer and makes of the whole region a
perfect stay for nature-lovers.

the banks of the river Sûre, Echternach forms the border with Germany

walking paths lead to the surrounding woods with view points, waterfalls and rocks, like the famous “Gorge du Loup” and the Pérécop.
Echternach lies at the intersection of Routes 1+2 of the Mullerthal-Trail,

narrow streets and the ancient ramparts have helped Echternach to
retain a remarkable medieval atmosphere. Five restored towers of the

The Moselle
where the wine is king
Appealing, unrestricted and stress-free – the Moselle valley stimulates the senses, connects
people of different nationalities and enables you to switch off from everyday life.
Most appealing of all are the vintage quality Moselle wines, best when accompanying fried fish
in one of the renowned restaurants along the picturesque wine village route.
The Romans saw it as a unrestricted region covered with vines, influenced by the meanderings
of the Moselle. Here, with its inter-connecting bridges, you will find the birthplace of the
“Schengen area“.
Ambling stress-free along narrow paths and through narrow alleys, or discovering the Mosel
area on a boat trip, is more relaxing than travelling on the beaten track.
Worth seeing
Wine and sparkling wine cellars, the
exotic world of a butterfly garden, the
large aquarium in Wasserbillig, hiking
paths in the wine mountains, the “Possenhaus” folklore museum in Bech-Kleinmacher
or the wine museum in Ehnen, a trip on
the luxury passenger boat “MS Princesse
Marie-Astrid” - all these are amongst the
highlights of the region.
Swimming pools, walking paths, signposted Nordic-Walking slopes, water
sports, mountainbiking, fitness trails,
cycle paths, … the sporting activities on
offer in the Moselle are varied.
The attractions of the spa town of Mondorfles-Bains include thermal baths, a flowered
park and a casino.

Nature and landscape
Even 2000 years on, traces can be found
of the Romans who planted the first vines
here. Guided walks and thematic trails
supply information about history, nature
and wine culture.
Today, small medieval towns such as Remich
and Grevenmacher characterise the region
just as much as pretty villages with narrow
streets and handsome winegrower’s houses.
The “Haff Réimech” nature reserve gives the
landscape a particular aura.
Culinary
Sophisticated cuisine has a strong presence
in the Luxembourg Moselle. Wine is included
amongst the regional specialties, with finely
coordinated menus of fried fish, pike or pikeperch to go with it.

The wine route
Established in the Moselle valley for thousands
of years, the culture of winegrowing in the
Grand-Duchy dates back to Roman times. The
winegrowing area of the Moselle stretches
from Schengen in the south to Wasserbillig in
the north, covering an area 42 km long and
300 to 400 meters wide.
Along the “Wäistrooss” or “Wine Route”, visits to picturesque
winegrowing villages, tasting sessions in the various cellars
and domains, wine festivals, walks through the vineyards,
and visits to the wine museum in Ehnen and the museum of
folklore in Bech-Kleinmacher will ensure that your days are
filled with moments of unending delight.
The wines of the Luxembourg Moselle
Whoever travels through the beautiful country of Luxembourg will find themselves falling in love with it immediately. In all the
picturesque countryside which is to be discovered, the valley of the River Moselle in particular reveals a captivating charm:
the silvered course of the beautiful river is edged throughout its length by gentle slopes planted with vines of ever-increasing
renown. Begun in this region thousands of years ago, the cultivation of the vine came to experience soaring growth with the
arrival of the Romans.
The viticulture of Luxembourg, which prompted General de Gaulle to call it “the the small country of great wines”, does not
claim that the role it plays is as important as in other countries. However nobody can contest its obvious effects on the civilisation
and on the development of the culture of our regions. The spiritual harvest which we owe to our modest Luxembourg vineyards
has found its place in our heritage, and even in our anthem, “wou d’Rief laanscht d’Musel dofteg bléit” (where the vine flowers
along the Moselle). To cross the Moselle country, to discover the ancient villages with their tortuous streets, perfect evidence of so
many pages of history, to be surprised at the same time by spectacular panoramas, this will be to feel even more the desire for
life. It will also be an encounter with many expressions of gastronomy and the culinary art. It will be to halt awhile in welcoming
restaurants, and to lick ones lips on tasting a “friture” of small river fish, one of the many Moselle specialities, to appreciate it
of course with a bottle of splendid wine.
An unforgettable tourist region, the Luxembourg Moselle is a permanent invitation to moments of rejoicing, both of the body and
of the mind. Days of tasting in the various cellars and estates, of wine festivals, of walking tours and promenades through the vineyards, of discovering the wine museums in Ehnen and Bech-Kleinmacher, and so many other diversions, will be forever a delight.
The Luxembourg Moselle expresses itself above all by the quality white wines made in the region. They come from nine varieties of
vine, of which they bear the name. They marry perfectly with gastronomy in general, and the Luxembourg gastronomy in particular.

Boasting an exceptional location
in the pedestrian quarter at the very heart of the capital city.
With 4 large car parks close by, the Hôtel Français currently offers 22 rooms.
Free WIFI at the reception desk.
Combining traditional Luxembourg-French
cuisine and contemporary gastronomy, its
restaurant is yet another asset.
Both the businessman and the tourist
will be charmed by the modern fittings
of this establishment.
When the sunny season comes, its large terrace opening out onto the “Place d’Armes”
yet adds to the pleasure of a splendid table.
