WE STAND FOR
INNOVATION
Our future is bright. Today innovation has no limits —
broadband, wireless, the Internet and the low cost of
components, especially MEMS (micro electromechanical
systems) are allowing smart companies and startups
to create new products and services with amazing
features. As more products connect to the Internet
and to each other, the Internet of Things will create
new business opportunities. Soon we will monitor
ourselves, our homes, our pets and livestock,
our plants, crops and trees, transforming
consumer’s lives.
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®
and our more than 2,000 members represent
innovation in the $286 billion consumer electronics (CE)
industry. Our member companies create economic
growth as they develop, market and sell products
and services that entertain, inform and connect
consumers. Our members benefit from legislative
and regulatory advocacy, market research, technical
training and education, industry promotion, standards
development and building strategic relationships.
CEA meets its mission of growing the industry in
several ways. We provide exclusive market research
with more than 20 consumer studies each year.
We developed more than 18 standards last year.
We worked with legislators to fight for the cause of
innovation. We hosted the International CES® and
this year, for the first time, the International CES Asia®,
providing participants with access to new relationships,
revenue and ideas.

Keeping Innovation Alive
Despite partisan gridlock in Congress, we engage
lawmakers on smart policies that support consumers
and the tech industry. CEA continues to support
pro-innovation policies at the federal and state level.
Disruptive innovators like Snapchat, Airbnb, Lyft and
Uber threaten legacy business practices and the status
quo and are being stifled by nonsensical rules that limit
customer choice.
CEA works in Washington D.C. and state capitals
nationwide for sensible legislation that encourages
innovation and opposes efforts to suppress it. Key
issues such as patent reform, strategic immigration
reform, spectrum allocation, energy efficiency and
recycling, trade, and the balance between fair use
and copyright holders’ protection directly impact the
business success of CEA’s members.
Through its educational efforts, CEA advocates for
issues that are crucial to advancing the innovation
economy. CEA’s Innovation Movement brings together
an engaged community of industry professionals,
entrepreneurs and citizens who believe innovation
is critical to American global leadership and economic
growth. At the 2015 CES, we also launched CEA’s third
best-selling book Digital Destiny: How the New Age
of Data Will Transform the Way We Work, Live, and
Communicate written by CEA Chief Economist Shawn
DuBravac, Ph.D. The book explores a world in which
everything is digital.
CEA also supports legislative efforts to secure
additional spectrum for both licensed and unlicensed
use for broadband services to address the impending
spectrum shortage. On the environmental front,
CE.org
as part of the eCycling Leadership Initiative, members
aim to recycle one billion pounds of electronics annually
by 2016. CEA’s GreenerGadgets.org is a resource for
consumers to learn about responsible disposal of their
gadgets and to find recycling locations.
Our annual Digital Patriots Dinner held during
Innovation Week in 2014 drew policymakers together
with leading tech innovators and the media to celebrate
the accomplishments of Senators Amy Klobuchar and
Rob Portman and Chairman and Founder of VOXX
International Corp. John Shalam. CES on the Hill
attracted a record-breaking number of members of
Congress and their staff – including 40 representatives
from both sides of the aisle – underscoring the idea
that technology and innovation transcend party lines.
At the April 2015 Digital Patriots Dinner, CEA launched
a 50 state Innovation Scorecard and honored America
Online (AOL) Co-founder Steve Case and Congressman
Bob Goodlatte (R-VA).
on Capitol Hill as a venue to host events to educate
policymakers about the innovation economy.
in China to expand market share in this rapidly growing
market. CEA also will hold its annual CEO Summit in
Shanghai in conjunction with the show.
The International CES Brand Grows
The 2015 International CES attracted more than 170,000
industry professionals, including more than 45,000
from outside the U.S. As the global stage for innovation,
CES brought together more than 3,600 exhibitors on the
largest show floor in history. Leaders from Hollywood,
Silicon Valley, Detroit and Madison Avenue meet at CES
with their international counterparts to network and do
business. New products and services launched at CES
include the latest in 3D audio, automotive electronics,
connected home technologies, digital imaging, electronic
gaming, healthcare, and entertainment and content.
A Positive World
Improving the lives of seniors and people with disabilities
through technology is the goal of the CEA Foundation.
We see a future where the biggest problems that humans
face will be solved with innovative technology. CEA is so
positive about the potential in this area that we invested
$1 million in the CEA Foundation in celebration of Jack
Wayman’s life. Jack led the creation of the International
CES. He passed away last August. We honored him with
a tribute in New York. Jack was not only a mentor
to many; he was also an industry legend.
But CES is not just about cutting-edge products — it is
also about sharing ideas and looking toward the future.
From Eureka Park, where startups connect, to the CES
Innovations Awards area to informative educational
keynotes and sessions, CES is the place to witness
technology trends in real time.
We will continue to work to ensure both political parties
responsibly address our policy issues and we also will
push back on those who want government to dictate
how we design and build our products and offer new
services. Please join with us as together we shape
a promising future.
The CES Unveiled series travels abroad to promote
CES and bring together technology companies, media,
buyers, analysts and industry influencers with a focus
on innovation. CES Unveiled events have been held in
London, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Paris, Shanghai, Warsaw
and Tokyo along with our flagship domestic events
held in New York and Las Vegas.
CEA’s Innovation House opened in December, 2014.
The townhouse, bought in 2013, was renovated to
include innovative technology and an elevator to
improve accessibility. It gives CEA a physical presence
CEA Corporate Report 2015

invitation was extended to CES exhibitors, as well as
the general public and allowed entrepreneurs a shot
to potentially take their business to the next level.
Policy at CES
CES also brings together leaders from major global
industries as well as policy makers and government
officials. The 2015 CES featured government officials
including members of the U.S. House of Representatives,

ENCOURAGING
INNOVATION
CEA recognizes that every day, our elected
representatives in Washington deal with issues
that affect our industry on a number of fronts, and
therefore advocates pro-innovation policies to state
and federal lawmakers, regulators and the courts.
To spur our innovation-driven economy, CEA’s tech
agenda calls on Congress to stop patent trolls, create
a skill-based immigration system, provide additional
wireless broadband spectrum, foster an environment
for disruptive innovation, eliminate regulatory and tax
burdens for innovators, open new trade markets to
American manufacturers and protect consumers’ digital
privacy from government surveillance programs.
10 | CEA Corporate Report 2015
Patent Reform
CEA backs patent litigation legislation reform to
combat the explosion of lawsuits brought by nonpracticing entities, better known as “patent trolls.”
Every dollar companies spend fighting baseless
lawsuits is a dollar not spent on creating jobs
and developing new products, which makes it
more difficult for the U.S. CE industry to compete
internationally. We urge both the House and
Senate to quickly pass this vital legislation—every
week of delay costs our economy an estimated
$1.5 billion.
Expanding the ITA
CEA strongly supports a more comprehensive
approach to the Information Technology Agreement
(ITA) expansion negotiations and has been closely
advising the United States Trade Representative
(USTR) on the technology industry’s position.
A successful ITA expansion will eliminate tariffs
on CE products and save billions of dollars for our
members. CEA has spent extensive time in Geneva
consulting with the Secretary General of the World
Trade Organization (WTO) and ITA member nations.
CEA also continues to coordinate with the U.S.
government, and provide testimony and counsel
for the ongoing negotiations.
Consumer Drone Rules
CEA realizes the potential of drones for consumer
applications, and supports recent Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) attention to proposing rules related
to the operation of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)
or drones. At the 2015 International CES, the Innovation
Policy conference track featured a panel on drones with
speakers from the FAA, Nevada’s UAS Test Site and CEA
member companies.
Skilled Immigration
CEA supports strategic immigration reforms that
encourage foreign-born entrepreneurs and U.S.educated immigrants to remain in the U.S. to build
businesses and create domestic jobs. CEA has backed
reform legislation including Rep. Darrell Issa’s Supplying
Knowledge-Based Immigrants and Lifting Levels of
STEM Visas Act (SKILLS Visa Act) and Sen. Orrin Hatch’s
I-Squared Act of 2015.
Open Internet
CEA supports a free, competitive and open Internet, but
seeks a balanced approach that promotes openness while
protecting the flexibility to innovate. CEA hopes the FCC
and Congress will work together to reach a balanced and
bipartisan compromise that does not entail the imposition
of top-down “Title II” regulations. CEA believes that the
CE.org
government can most effectively create competition in
Internet services by reallocating spectrum for wireless
broadband use.
Communications Accessibility Act of 2010. CEA
supports regulations that balance the twin goals of
improved accessibility and the flexibility to innovate.
Increasing Spectrum and Mobile Broadband Access
As consumers rely more on wireless devices and
services, our nation’s spectrum resources are
increasingly under strain. CEA strongly supports
government efforts to free up spectrum for licensed
and unlicensed use in three ways: (1) repurposing TV
broadcast spectrum for valuable wireless broadband
uses; (2) exploring spectrum sharing; and (3) clearing
and repurposing underutilized federal spectrum. In
particular, TV broadcast spectrum repurposed through
voluntary incentive auctions will promote innovation
and job creation, reduce the national debt, and amply
compensate television broadcasters that choose
to participate. Incentive auctions also will alleviate
the spectrum crunch so Americans can enjoy robust
wireless broadband that will power the innovationdriven economy.
Encouraging Energy Efficiency
Voluntary, market-oriented programs and initiatives,
including industry-led standards, are a proven,
cost-effective and successful approach to advancing
energy efficiency in consumer electronics. CEA works
cooperatively with governments in the development
of energy efficiency initiatives and opposes mandates
that stifle innovation, reduce consumer choice and
limit product features and services.
Ensuring Accessibility to Technologies
CEA supports industry-driven solutions to ensure that
innovative technologies and services are accessible
to consumers with disabilities. CEA works with
members of the accessibility community and the
FCC as it implements the 21st Century Video and
CEA Corporate Report 2015
Intellectual Property and Copyright
CEA promotes a balanced approach to copyright
that protects copyright holders while promoting
innovation. Similarly, CEA encourages digital music
royalties to be set at levels that fairly compensate
creators while enabling a dynamic and sustainable
digital music marketplace.
Promoting Safe In-Vehicle Technologies
CEA is committed to the principle that a driver’s
highest priority is the safe control of their vehicle and
technology is doing amazing things to increase driving
safety with a wide variety of innovative solutions
available for consumers to choose from today. The
benefits of technology go far beyond minimizing
distractions, with innovations designed to make the
overall driving experience safer. CEA supports state
legislation that prohibits texting while driving as well
as a ban on cell phone use by those with a graduated
driver’s license. CEA strongly believes however, that
policymakers must recognize that many in-vehicle
electronics contribute to safer driving and offer
valuable benefits.
CEA’s Innovation House on Capitol Hill
In 2014, the CEA Executive Board and Rep. Darrell Issa
formally opened the CEA Innovation House. This townhouse
is a unique venue for educating policymakers and staff,
enabling them to experience the cutting-edge technology
that drives our innovation economy. The Innovation
House will host a variety of policy-related events including
fundraisers, lobby days and educational presentations.

ADVANCING
TECHNOLOGY
Technical standards are the fabric of interoperability
and quality in the CE industry. Standards ensure that
new advances harmonize with existing technologies.
CEA’s Technology & Standards team works with company
representatives in a trusted and collaborative process
to develop voluntary consensus industry standards,
the best means to manage the pace of innovation.
And once the standard is set, CEA PlugFests allow
engineering teams to test and tweak their latest
designs for maximum compatibility.
These collaborative industry efforts not only help
manufacturers develop products, they also help
regulators and industry leaders make informed public
policy decisions about the most pressing issues facing
the consumer technology market.
CEA is a leader in developing and promoting these
industry standards, overseeing a dynamic group of
committees that publish specifications on audio,
video, portable and handheld electronics, automotive
and networking products. CEA standards activity was
sharply up this year, with an increase of 28 percent in
the number of standards, bulletins and technical reports
published in 2014 over the prior year; and an increase
of 18 percent in the number of participants.
Technology & Standards committee, subcommittee
and working group meetings are open to the CE
industry and free for CEA members. CEA is an
accredited developer of American National Standards,
ensuring our role as a national and global standards
developing organization.

CEA ACHIEVEMENTS:
Enhancing Interfaces for New Display
Technologies
4K Ultra HD (UHD) is more than just higher
resolution. High Dynamic Range (HDR) was a hot topic
at CES, and the demos were amazing. This extension
to one of CEA’s most popular standards, A DTV Profile
for Uncompressed High-Speed Digital Interfaces (ANSI/
CEA-861-F) will allow the display industry to keep pace
with this development in 4K UHD. This committee met
an aggressive schedule requested by the HDMI Forum
and the Blu-ray Disc Association to define a way to
signal HDR details in time for the first quarter release
of Blu-ray’s next generation specification.
Addressing the Internet of Things
“IPv6” is the new Internet addressing system that
will be used for the billions of devices in the Internet
of Things. The new Host and Router Profiles for IPv6
standard defines critical technical requirements for
IPv6-enabled connected devices and home routers
and helps members target essential IPv6 features.
This specification was one of the Featured Standards
at the 2015 CES.

Internet of Things
CEA’s Consumer Electronics Networking Committee
created a new standard defining technical requirements
for IPv6-enabled connected devices and home routers
and helps members target essential IPv6 features. “IPv6”
is the new Internet addressing system that will be used
for the billions of devices in the Internet of Things.
Energy Efficiency
CEA’s Consumer Electronics Networking Committee has
launched a new working group to investigate reducing
audio/video device power. When a home theater has
multiple devices, it would be more efficient to know
which one is providing the current music or video, and
which ones are on or in sleep mode. This specification
is expected to result in increased user convenience and
energy efficiency in home AV networks.
The Consumer Electronics Networking Committee is
working on projects related to the energy efficiency of
small network equipment, which includes Wi-Fi routers
and Ethernet switches.
Wearables
CEA is proud to announce the creation of the Health and
Fitness Technology Subcommittee. This group will develop
standards and recommended practices for consumer
health and fitness technology. This category includes
fixed, portable and wearable health and fitness devices.
Dr. Matthew Diamond, Misfit, and Nitesh Jain, Samsung,
co-chair the new group.
CEA is working with the National Sleep Foundation
(NSF), medical professionals and manufacturers on
common terms for wearable sleep devices, which will
provide a common understanding as the working group
begins addressing minimum performance requirements
and interoperability requirements for wearable sleep
monitors. This work will lead to a future project defining
minimum performance requirements and interoperability
requirements for wearable sleep monitors.
Accessibility
CEA’s Portable, Handheld and In-Vehicle Electronics
Committee is working on Personal Sound Amplification
Performance (PSAP) Criteria. This group is developing
technical guidance and terminology for personal sound
amplification products. These devices hold promise
in helping consumers hear better, especially in noisy
environments. This activity supports CEA’s commitment
to help manufacturers make products and services to
enhance accessibility by people with disabilities.
CEA’s Innovation Scorecard
The license to innovate, ability to hire qualified workers
in the science and engineering fields, and freedom from
burdensome taxes are key factors for entrepreneurs and
business owners deciding where to design, make and
sell their products and services. However, not all U.S.
states offer the same welcoming environment to foster
innovation and support entrepreneurial activity. A state’s
pro-innovation environment is especially important today,
as new businesses and jobs emerge that disrupt existing
models and entrenched industries. To recognize and
account for favorable and unfavorable policy actions
and business environments at the state level, CEA’s
Innovation Scorecard provides guideposts for states
to improve their ability to innovate.
