KILZ Original Primer
KILZ® ORIGINAL is the powerful stainblocking primer that tackles the toughest interior stains. It even seals the odors caused by
fire, smoke, nicotine and pet stains. KILZ Original has a quick-dry, oil-based formula that will can be topcoated with either latex or
oil-based paint and makes an excellent enamel undercoater, leaving the surface well prepared for a smooth, enamel finish.
KILZ® Original Low VOC
Recommended Uses:
KILZ® Original blocks out most stains
including water, smoke, tannin, ink, pencil,
felt marker, grease, and seals pet and smoke
odors. Use on interior surfaces including
wood, drywall, plaster, paneling, wallpaper,
masonry, brick, painted metal and properly
prepared glossy surfaces*. KILZ Original is
not recommended on flooring.

Application Information:
• Eye protection is recommended.
Do not thin. Stir thoroughly before and
occasionally during use. Apply using a
brush, roller or sprayer.
• Prime the entire surface to ensure a
uniform appearance of the topcoat.
• Stainblocking: After priming, test for stain
bleed-through by applying the topcoat to a
small section. If the stain bleeds through
the topcoat, apply a second coat of primer
and test again before topcoating the entire
area. If bleeding continues, a longer dry
time is needed before topcoating.
• Tinting: KILZ Original may be tinted with
up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per
gallon. Tinting to a lighter shade than the
topcoat is recommended.
• Coverage: Up to 300 square feet per
gallon on porous surfaces; up to 400
square feet per gallon on smooth, nonporous surfaces.
• Dry Time: KILZ Original dries to touch in
30 minutes at 77°F (25°C) and 50%
humidity, and can be recoated or topcoated
in 1 hour with latex or oil-based paint.
Application at lower temperatures, in high
humidity or with poor ventilation can
significantly increase dry and recoat times.
• Clean up and Disposal: Use soap and
water to clean hands, tools and spills. Do
not dispose of this product down a drain.
For disposal of empty containers and
unused product, contract your household
refuse collection service.
Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be sound, dry, clean and
free of oil, grease, wax, polish, mildew, form
release agents, curing compounds, efflorescence, loose and flaking paint and other
foreign substances.
Storage Temperature:
Shelf Life: 2 years unopened, do not allow
product to freeze

Application Information:
• Eye protection is recommended.
• For best results, use at room temperature.
• Shake can vigorously for 1 minute after
mixing ball begins to rattle and often during
use. Hold can upright, moving from
side-to-side while spraying lightly and
evenly about 12” from area being painted.
Two to three thin coats produce best
results.
• Topcoat with latex or oil-based paint after
15 minutes. NOTE: On some surfaces, spot
priming may cause a non-uniform appearance in the final coat. To avoid this, prime
the entire surface.
• Prime the entire surface to ensure a
uniform appearance of the topcoat.
• Stainblocking: After priming, test for stain
bleed-through by applying the topcoat to a
small section. If the stain bleeds through
the topcoat, apply a second coat of primer
and test again before topcoating the entire
area. If bleeding continues, a longer dry
time is needed before topcoating.
• Dry Time: Dries to touch in minutes at
77°F (25°C) and 50% humidity. Application
at lower temperatures, high humidity or
poor ventilation will affect dry time. Recoat
or topcoat in 15 minutes.
• Clean up and Disposal: Use soap and
water to clean hands, tools and spills. Do
not dispose of this product down a drain.
