Originally it was two R. A. Lister companies, Lister and Petter. Each became with his five sons famous in its own right (see below). and members of their staff in 1927. Date LISTER PETTER Lister founded in Dursley, England (1867) 1860s by Robert Ashton Lister. Main products: agricultural equipment. Petter founded in Yeovil, England (1865) Main products: ironmongery. 1890s Ernest and Percy Petter design and build an oil engine and build the UK’s first car with an internal combustion engine. The company becomes J. B. Petter and Sons. R. A. Lister and Co. produce petrol engines, mainly to power sheep-shearing equipment. 1900 to 1920 Petter produce the first tractor (1902), with a 30 Hp diesel engine, and introduce the Handyman engine. Petter open the Nautilus Works in Reckleford (1912), employing 500 people and making 1500 engines a year. Main products: stationary petrol and diesel horizontal crank engines, from 1 Hp. Petter found Westland Aircraft Works (1915). Percy, the third of Robert Ashton Lister’s five sons, heads R. A. Lister and Co. Ltd, which employs over 2000 staff, with worldwide markets and 6000 retail outlets in the UK. popular D-type engine introduced. 1920s Highly In 1930 the company manufactures around and 600 engines a week, mainly 1.5 to 3 Hp for 1930s construction equipment. There are 80 petrol engine models. Other main products: electric lighting plants, dairy equipment, sheep shearing machinery and garden furniture. from late 1940s Lister continue to sell the highly successful D-type and CS (cold-start) diesel engines, as well as light (1.5 ton) narrow gauge locomotives. 1957 Manufacture of 2-stroke and 4-stroke petrol and diesel engines at Yeovil, Staines and Loughborough. The M-type and A-type are competitors of the Listers D-Type. Other products introduced include mechanical calculators. Petter acquire Lagonda works near Staines and employ over 1000 people there. Hawker Siddeley acquires Petter. 1965 Hawker Siddeley acquires Lister. 1986 Hawker Siddeley combines Lister and Petter into one company, LISTER 4 PETTER. Petter was formed in 1865 in Yeovil, England. Lister was formed in 1867 in Dursley, England. Lister achieved its early strength in the development and marketing of agricultural equipment, later expanding into petrol and diesel engines and other products, whereas Petter was always principally an engine company. The Lister foundry in the 1920s. The 16th-century priory occupied by Lister in the 1920s and 30s is also our headquarters today. The PHW1, one of the Petter engines from earlier decades. LISTER PETTER 1986 TO 2003 LISTER PETTER GROUP TODAY LISTER PETTER was formed in 1986 when Hawker Siddeley merged the two separate companies of Lister and Petter. Traditionally LISTER PETTER’s strongest markets were in Commonwealth countries where the names of LISTER PETTER, Massey Ferguson, and Land Rover were synonymous with quality, reliability and ruggedness. LISTER PETTER engines were widely used in industrial equipment, offhighway equipment and generating sets. It had a strong position. Research and development under Hawker Siddleley enabled LISTER PETTER to make significant advances in its engine know-how. This culminated in its highly successful ALPHA engine. Under new ownership from 2004, LISTER PETTER was given a new lease of life as the LISTER PETTER Group. This restructuring combines the existing LISTER PETTER core brand and business with R. A. Lister Overseas Investments (based in the USA, France and India), LISTER PETTER Aftermarkets (British-based remanufacturing) and joint ventures with the Jinan Fuqiang Power Co. (engine remanufacturing) and CNHTC Sinotruk (China’s leading heavy truck manufacturer). 5 THE COMPLETE ENGINE RANGE LISTER PETTER manufactures air-cooled and liquid-cooled engines. These are fuelled by diesel, biodiesel or natural gas/ propane (LPG). In addition to the standards of quality, reliability and durability that you expect from LISTER PETTER, we offer products for a variety of different situations and emissions markets. For example, the LPWS is the new version of the popular ALPHA engine, engineered to comply with stringent emissions regulations in Europe, the USA and India. ALPHA is also available as a gas engine. In ascending order of power output capacity, our range comprises the A Series, the L Series and the T Series (all air-cooled); and the ALPHA (LPW) Series, the DELTA Series, the GAMMA Series and the OMEGA Series (all liquid-cooled). AIR-COOLED DIESEL ENGINES Air cooled engines use a fan to drive air across cooling fins on the engine. Air cooling is more efficient than liquid cooling since less air volume is needed and the engines reach operating temperature more quickly. Half of all engine breakdowns (all makes) involve coolant leaks. Air-cooled engines do not have this problem and are well suited to long periods of unattended running. They can start and operate over a wider temperature range than liquid-cooled engines (since coolant can freeze or boil). Like for like, air cooled engines tend to last longer. Above a certain power — according to design — air cooling is not possible because there is too much heat to remove. Fewer manufacturers make air cooled engines than watercooled. LISTER PETTER offer several different ranges of aircooled engine: the A Series, the L Series and the popular T Series. 6 AIR-COOLED DIESEL ENGINES The AC1 and AD1, which won a Design Council Award when first introduced, are exceedingly durable, reliable and easy to service. The AC1 and AD1 feature a flywheelmounted cooling fan. As with all LISTER PETTER air-cooled engines they can start and operate over a wide range of temperatures. They also meet the emission requirements in the EU. They are single-cylinder air-cooled diesel engines, available in variable speed or fixed speed builds (G-build) with a choice of clockwise or anticlockwise rotation (AD1). Lightweight (50kg) and very durable, they provide power from 2.3 to 6.1 kW and have a displacement of 304 cc and 367 cc. These engines are well suited to variable speed applications, such as offhighway equipment. They also can operate continuously at 3000 r/min and have numerous fixed speed applications, such as generating sets, welding equipment, pumps and military applications. L SERIES: LT1 AND LV1 Available as both variable and fixed speed builds, these single-cylinder aircooled diesel engines provide power from 2.1 to 7.6 kW and, like the A Series, are durable, reliable and easy to service. These tough and robust engines have a flywheelmounted cooling fan and are able to operate over a wide range of temperatures, the LT1 and LV2 have a displacement of 408 cc and 477 cc, can operate continuously at 3000 rpm and meet the emission requirements in the EU. Heavier than the A Series engines at 83kg, they are well-suited to variable speed applications, such as offhighway equipment, as well as fixed speed applications including pumps, generating sets, welding equipment, and military applications. 7 AIR-COOLED DIESEL ENGINES T SERIES: TR1, TR2, TR3 These popular and durable air-cooled diesel engines are available in both variable speed and fixed speed builds (G-build) in 1, 2 or 3 cylinder versions, providing power from 6 to 29 kW. T Series engines are incredibly tough and durable, with reports of engines still in continous operation after decades of use. Like the A and L Series engines, they are fitted with a flywheel-mounted cooling fan and can start and operate over a wide range of temperatures. TR engines are very reliable and easy to service. They have a displacement of 773 cc per cylinder and can operate continuously at 2500 rpm. The TR1 and TR2 meet the emission requirements in the EU. TR engines are well suited to variable speed applications such as off-highway equipment, and to fixed-speed applications such as pumps and generating sets. They can also be marinised on request. LIQUID-COOLED ENGINES LIQUID-COOLED ENGINES These engines are cooled by liquid circulated around the engine and include LISTER PETTER’s best-selling ALPHA range. The liquid is usually water, but it can be a suitable coolant such as anti-freeze, or a combination of water and coolant. When the engine is at operating temperature, the coolant is redirected via a heat exchanger, typically a radiator. A fan — which may or may not be coupled to the engine — pushes or pulls air through the radiator and the liquid is cooled and re-circulated. In marine engines the heat exchanger is usually cooled by water drawn in from outside the vessel. The liquid-cooled diesel engines offered by LISTER PETTER include the ALPHA, DELTA, GAMMA, and OMEGA ranges. 8 LIQUID-COOLED DIESEL AND GAS ENGINES ALPHA DIESEL: LPW2, LPW3, LPW4, LPWT4 electronics and requires no special tools. The ALPHA range of liquid-cooled Hydraulic tappets ensure that no part of diesel engines are LISTER PETTER’s the engine needs to be opened during best-selling product. It uses no ALPHA GAS: LPWG2, LPWG3, LPWG4 These gas-fuelled ALPHA engines use spark ignition for use with gaseous fuels — natural gas and propane. applications, including power generation as well as pumps sets and military uses. ALPHA TECHNOLOGY When LISTER PETTER developed the ALPHA range it discovered a considerable amount about fuel combustion in compact high-speed engines. The technology developed to create this most fuel-flexibleof engines is known inside and outside LISTER PETTER as ALPHA Technology. The LPWG range offers all the desirable qualities you expect from ALPHA and has the additional environmental benefit of running on a very clean fuel. ALPHA gas is used to power LISTER PETTER generating sets in the LLD and GS ranges. 9 LIQUID-COOLED DIESEL AND BIODIESELENGINES NEW ALPHA SERIES: LPWS2, LPWS3, LPWS4, LPWST4 The Alpha LPWS range was the first engine to meet all of the current and planned emission standards in the EU and US. This has been achieved without any electronics and without any change to the engine envelope or the service parts and with no significant change in cost and without any loss of power. LPWS (Fixed Speed) Emission Compliance and Power Outputs Model Power Continuous LPWS2 Intermittent (Fuel Stop) Continuous LPWS3 Intermittent (Fuel Stop) Continuous LPWS4 Intermittent (Fuel Stop) Continuous LPWST4 The NEW ALPHA (LPWS) is the emission compliant version of the ALPHA engine. Closely based on the LPW, it has the advantages of ALPHA technology and is designed for compliance with emissions regulations in Europe and the USA. The LPWS differs from the LPW in having indirect injection, which involves injecting the fuel into a pre-combustion chamber prior to the compression ignition process. The LPWS2, LPWS3 and LPWS4 variable speed builds are fully compliant with EU Stage 3A and USA EPA interim Tier 4 regulations. The fixed speed builds at 3000 r/min also comply with India GSR 448(E) legislation. For emissions compliance of other LPWS fixed speed builds see table. 10 Intermittent (Fuel Stop) r/ min: kW bhp kW bhp kW bhp kW bhp kW bhp kW bhp kW bhp kW bhp 1500 1800 3000 3600 7.5 10.1 8.2 11.0 11.3 15.2 12.4 16.6 15.0 20.1 16.5 22.1 18.9 25.3 20.8 27.8 9.3 12.5 10.2 13.7 13.9 18.6 15.3 20.5 18.6 24.9 20.3 27.5 23.8 31.9 26.2 35.1 13.4 18.0 14.7 19.7 20.1 26.9 22.1 29.6 26.8 36.0 29.5 39.6 14.0 18.8 15.4 20.6 21.0 28.1 23.1 31.0 28.0 37.5 30.8 41.3 Compliant with EU Stage 3A, USA EPA Interim Tier 4 and India GSR 448(E). ALPHA BIO: LPWSBio2, LPWSBio3, LPWSBio4 The engines in the ALPHA Bio range have been specially adapted to run on pure biodiesel (B100). Based on the emission-compliant LPWS, ALPHA Bio engines combine the other advantages of ALPHA with the benefit of running on this much cleaner fuel. LIQUID-COOLED DIESEL ENGINES DELTA SERIES: DWS4 The 4-cylinder DELTA engine is the bigger brother of the ALPHA and is available in both variable and fixed speed builds. The DELTA is well suited to generating set, pump set, industrial and off-highway applications. Generating sets powered by DELTA are offered in the LISTER PETTER LLD and GS ranges. GAMMA SERIES: GW4, GWT4, GWT6-1A, GWT6-2A, GWTA6 With the introduction of the GAMMA range, LISTER PETTER customers can now opt for a heavy-duty G-Build engine in the middle power band of 30 kVa to 100 kVA. GAMMA is offered in both a 4-cylinder and a 6-cylinder version, either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Introduced at the end of 2007. GAMMA engines range in power from 40 to 147 kW and are suitable for LISTER PETTER’s traditional markets where emissions compliance is not a requirement, and oil life and fuel efficiency matter more. GAMMA is offered as a bare engine and as a power pack (with radiator and accessories) and is ideally suited to use in generating sets and pumps. OMEGA 100 AND 200 SERIES: OWT6 AND OWTA6 Launched in 2007, the OMEGA is a reliable, heavy-duty turbocharged 6-cylinder engine offering a power range of 78 to 268 kW and a choice of variable or fixed speed builds. With an option of intercooling for improved power output performance (OWTA6), OMEGA is suited to heavyduty power generation and off-highway applications. The OMEGA 100 or 200 G-Build powers the LISTER PETTER LLO open generating set. 11 AIR AND LIQUID-COOLED GENERATING SETS We offer a wide range of generating sets, which can be powered by LISTER PETTER engines or other makes. LLO open generating set. 13 At a time of global concern to find alternatives to highly polluting fuels, LISTER PETTER has developed technology to promote cleaner fuels and lower emissions. The popular ALPHA engine is available as a model that runs on natural gas or propane (LPWG; page 12), which are among the cleanest hydrocarbon fuels. Natural gas (methane) is available from many sustainable and renewable sources such as agricultural waste, landfill and sewerage processing. In 2007 LISTER PETTER introduced the ALPHA BIO (LPWS Bio; page 11), which 14 *Subject to sustainable husbandry methods. runs on pure biodiesel (B100), a carbonneutral* fuel. B100 is 100% bio-diesel. Most engines require blending of diesel and bio-diesel (e.g. Bio=10% bio/90% diesel. To complement this engine LISTER PETTER also offers a unit for the production of biodiesel, the Bio Rig (illustrated), produces biodiesel from a range of straight vegetable oils (SVO). With land use under increasing pressure globally, the Bio Rig has potenial to produce biodiesel from recycled vegetable oils (RVO). It can itself be powered by biodiesel, using the ALPHA BIO engine, thus closing the loop of fuel selfsufficiency. As a customer of LISTER PETTER, you can expect the attention to detail on which our reputation is built. Our Applications Engineering team can assist our customers to engineer in LISTER PETTER engines into their products and designs. 15 LISTER PETTER offers remanufacturing using state-of-the-art technology. Engines at the end of their economic life are stripped to components in quality-controlled factory conditions. Parts are tested and worn components are replaced or remanufactured. From these components ‘as-new’ engines are built. In addition to its own products, LISTER PETTER remanufactures engines for many famous brands. The service is of particular importance at a time when sustainability is an increasingly high-profile issue, re-use often being preferable to buying a new product. Remanufacturing will be of especial interest to commercial clients who have fleets of enginepowered equipment that needs to be kept continuously in service; and those who manufacture engines or engine-powered products. Remanufacturing is different from repairing, rebuilding or reconditioning, since the resultant engine is equivalent to a new product. Worn engines are stripped to their base components, cleaned, examined and tested. The surfaces of some components are repaired; 16 other parts are replaced; and a new (reman) product is built to the necessary standard using a mix of old and new components and supplied with a new product warranty. Remanufacturing is a factorycontrolled process under ISO 9001. This means that the customer gets a quality product that operates to the same standard as a new engine. 17 PUMPS TR pump set. LISTER PETTER offers a range of irrigation and drainage pumps powered by air-cooled engines from the TR range. WELDING SETS LISTER PETTER’s range of welding sets are powered by liquid-cooled ALPHA engines and T-Range engines. ALPHA welding set. LISTER PETTER offers a comprehensive service in the supply of replacement parts. To keep your engine running at maximum efficiency and prolong its life always use genuine LISTER PETTER parts. Ask your distributor for details. We can also exchange (remanufacture) parts and engines for those who want LISTER PETTER quality but do not object to remanufactured items. 18 UK LISTER PETTER Limited, Dursley, Gloucestershire GL11 4HS England; Tel: +44 (0)1453 544141; Fax: +44 (0)1453 546732; E-mail: [email protected] http://www.lister-petter.co.uk USA LISTER PETTER Americas Inc. 815 E. 56 Highway, Olathe, Kansas 66061 USA Tel: +1 913 764-3512; Fax: +1 913 764-5493; E-mail: [email protected]; http://www.lister-petter.com FRANCE LISTER PETTER France, 17 Avenue de l’Escouvrier, Zone d’Activités, 95842 Sarcelles Cedex, France; Tel: +33 (0)1 39330420; Fax: +33 (0)1 34195760; E-mail: [email protected] INDIA LISTER PETTER India (P) Limited, 32/2/5/1, Kondhawa (BK), Pune 411048 India Tel: +91 20 2693 2688/3644/3645; Fax: +91 20 2693 3286 Email: [email protected] CHINA LISTER PETTER China, Jinan Fuqiang Power Co.
