THE MAGIC OF MURI
Muri Beach is a two kilometre white sandy beach just twenty minutes from Town (Avarua) on the
Sunrise side of the island. From the beach you can easily access tiny islets known as motu, nestled
invitingly in the lagoon. To the other side of Muri is lush moutains and in between a bustling, but
still very relaxing resort town.
The magic of Muri is the infrastructure surrounding the full service resorts, villas and holiday homes
in this area. Walk to café’s, restaurants, Te Vara Nui Cultural Centre, boutiques and the famous
night food markets. It always feels like something is happening with lagoon cruise departures and
other water sports operators making this their hub. Snorkel, kayak, try your hand at stand up paddle boarding or the popular sport of kitesurfing.
The lagoon and beach in Muri is second to none. On Saturdays the Rarotonga Sailing Club has
lagoon races and welcomes visitors.

Arorangi is on the western side of the island and is famous for its sunsets and beautiful coral gardens
directly accessed from the beach. Nearby attractions include Highland Paradise, a multi award
winning cultural centre, marae and museum. Expect to find the widest stretch of beach in Arorangi
and many a visitor enjoying the mesmerizing sunsets with a cocktail in hand from this powdery white
beach.
Arorangi is close to Town (Avarua) and only a 20 minute drive to Muri Beach, but it really doesn’t
matter where you stay as it’s only a 45 minute drive around the entire island and with no traffic
lights, no buildings taller than a coconut palm and our island buses going clockwise and
anticlockwise you really can’t get lost.

O’OTU BEACH AND AKITUA
On the eastern side of the island the ever popular O’otu Beach area is perhaps the best place for
swimming and kayaking and the most popular sport in Aitutaki for – kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Several cruise boats leave from here and you’ll also find a couple of restaurants and a café that offers
internet access (fee applies). Motoized watersports are also on offer, but far away from the resorts
so as to keep the peace and conserve the lagoon.
Just across a little inlet you can ferry to Akitua Island where you’ll find the Cook Islands only
overwater bungalows at the Aitutaki Lagoon Resort and Spa. Even if you’re not staying at this resort,

convenience stores and one ATM. Yachts from all over the world make a point of calling into the
small harbour, a pretty site to see. Aitutaki offers the unique sport of bonefishing and there’s always
charter boats heading out. The Aitutaki Game Fishing Club is next to the wharf and is a great place
