EDITOR’S
LETTER
Before we move on to the food-heavy festivities that await in the
coming months, we must endure the bittersweet post-Halloween
days that force us to reflect upon the choices we’ve made—and for
most of us that indulged in treats rather than tricks, that includes a
lot of brushing and flossing. Fortunately, we have a guide of Tokyo’s

top dentists to give a shine to your smile. Meanwhile, post-Halloween
in Japan also means pre-Christmas. But if you feel it’s too early for
holiday tunes, hear Dominican-American pop star Kat DeLuna’s
dancefloor-friendly beats. Alternately, boyband Collabro provide a
classy musical soundtrack to the season. What’s your flavor?

WHINING UP
IN JAPAN
Following Kat DeLuna’s
path to Tokyo
BY TWIKI KLAATU
T
he summer of 2007 was scorching—but
the heat was mainly coming from the
airwaves as pop music took a turn to the
islands. Reggaeton and dancehall dominated the genre and the charts, catapulting
Caribbean pop stars such as Rihanna, Sean
Kingston, and Sean Paul into the mainstream. At
the helm of this trend was then-19-year-old Kat
DeLuna, whose infectious dancehall hit “Whine
Up”—which featured Elephant Man—was being
blasted in clubs and on iPods everywhere.
While her catchy name may sound like one
crafted for stage, it has in fact been with her
since birth. “Kat is short for Kathleen,” the
singer explains. “My full name is Kathleen
Emperatriz DeLuna, which means ‘Pure Moon
Empress’ in Spanish.”
Now on the verge of turning 28, the Dominican-American diva is making a welcome
return following her 2010 album Inside Out with
the new single “Bum Bum,” featuring singersongwriter Trey Songz.
Part of that return includes a trip to Japan
for her “Asian Beauty” tour. DeLuna has a
love for everything Japanese—the people,
the food, the fashion—and this trip will see her
performing in Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, and, of
course, Tokyo, where she’ll appear at ELE Tokyo in Azabu-Jūban on October 29, the same
night and venue as the Metropolis Halloween
Glitterball.
06
To follow the path that led to the “Asian
Beauty” tour, we must go all the way back to
New York City and the Bronx, where she was
born in 1987. Although she was born in the U.S.,
her parents are both Dominican and the family
soon moved back to the Dominican Republic. It
was there that DeLuna formed a love for music.
“Since the very early age of two, I recognized that my passion for music was more than
just a thing. I had to have it, and be it,” explains
DeLuna.
So, naturally, upon returning to America at
the age of 14, the singer soon attended the
Newark Arts High School in New Jersey. Her
passion for performing grew along with her
skills, and a turning point came in 2002 when
she took first prize in a karaoke competition
with a rendition of “I Will Always Love You,”
Dolly Parton’s hit song that was written fully
into the cultural lexicon by Whitney Houston
and The Bodyguard. Even to this day, DeLuna
cites the legendary diva as a key influence,
saying that “Run to You” is her favorite song
to sing.
Fast-forward to 2006, when DeLuna signed
a recording contract with Epic Records, the label that has been home to Celine Dion, Sade,
Shakira, Pearl Jam, and Michael Jackson. This
led to the development of her first album, 9
Lives, and the release of the aforementioned
single “Whine Up” in 2007. This Gold-certified
single—whose title comes from the Caribbean
English pronunciation of “wind up,” the act of
moving one’s hips on the dance floor—reached
No. 1 on the Billboard U.S. Dance Club Songs
chart, and landed DeLuna a Billboard Latin
Music Award for Latin Dance Club Play Track
of the Year, making her the first Dominican pop
singer to cross over into the mainstream.
In October 2007, DeLuna was named Best
New Artist at the Premios MTV Latinoamérica
Awards. In the years that followed, her fan base
continued to grow, and in 2009 she moved to
Universal Music and began work on her second album, Inside Out. The lead single “Push
Push,” featuring prolific R&B master Akon, was
released in 2010.
With each year, expectations have grown,
and one might expect there to be some tough
times to work through, but DeLuna says that
hasn’t been the case. When asked what has
been the most difficult time since her debut,
she explains “There hasn’t been one. I am a
very positive person. I am thankful for my fans
[‘Delunatics’] because they have brought me
to this point. I love what I do and always push
forward no matter what the situation is.”
Following new singles roughly once a year
between 2010 and today, the next step for
DeLuna is her upcoming album Viva Out Loud.
And that brings us to the “Asian Beauty” tour
and the first stop on October 29 at ELE Tokyo.
After this, the tour will continue with shows at
Vanity Osaka (November 2), V2 Tokyo (November 7), Kitsune Kyoto (November 8), and Orca
Nagoya (November 10). Details about all these
dates are available at http://dme-world.net.
Finally, DeLuna leaves us with advice for
up-and-coming artists: “Be strong and believe
that you can do it.”
SINCE THE
VERY EARLY
AGE OF TWO,
I RECOGNIZED
THAT MY
PASSION FOR
MUSIC WAS
MORE THAN
JUST A THING.
I HAD TO HAVE
IT, AND BE IT.”

Lunch sets are priced between ¥1,150 and

These would normally set you back up to ¥770

random options such as pasta, fried chicken,

To venture inside is to enter a formal establishment reminiscent of Europe in a bygone

one should opt for if weather permits as it offers
panoramic views of the district.
Staff dressed in black and white, with teenytiny bowties and hair in neat buns or ponytails

what you would expect: rather
than being just a simple warm and
comforting concoction, this soup is
replete with ribbons of shredded

this autumnal season. It is complemented by a hot Vienna bread roll.
The Wiener schnitzel is served
with potatoes and a slice of lemon
to further bring out the flavor, accompanied by a small pot of cassis
jam and blueberry sauce that adds
sweetness and moisture.
The European-style dessert is
very generous. The Mozart torte (an

creamy and sweet, with what seems
to be the traditional flavors of the Mozartkugel:
chocolate, marzipan, and nougat.
If old-school hospitality is what you’re after,
with a touch of elegance and a hearty European

this place takes the trophy.
Other desserts include apple strudel and the

The Viennese charm of this restaurant calls

Mikkeller
Tokyo
TEXT AND PHOTOS BY KOHEI USUDA
T
omigaya is a neighborhood that has retained a sense of authenticity in the midst
of Tokyo’s hyper-commercialized shopping hubs. A community of old-fashioned
izakayas, toriyaki shops, and independentlyowned cafes thrives along its intertwining
little alleyways, even though the area is only
a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of
Shibuya’s Center Gai.
The latest addition to the Tomigaya neighborhood is Mikkeller Tokyo, a casual bar operated by the Danish microbrewery, which was
founded in 2006.
Inside their newly-launched Tokyo brewpub—the third outlet to be opened in Asia after
Seoul and Bangkok—the wall behind the bar is
adorned by a big blackboard on which as many
as 20 different brews are listed at all times. (Out
of this extensive list, five “guest beer” slots are
reserved for local microbreweries such as Hokkaido’s own North Island brand.) This eclectic
diversity is what distinguishes Mikkeller from
other brands capitalizing on a growing thirst
for all things craft.
The brainchild of former science teacher
Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, the novelty of this quasiscientific approach to brewing has won over
many fans, not least the world-renowned chef
Rene Redzepi of Noma. And it is little wonder
why. His Copenhagen-based company does
not actually own a single brewery of its own.
Befitting his former profession, Bjergsø works in
close tandem with other microbreweries around
the world to produce “experimental” recipes for
his unique line of foamy beverages.
For a microbrewery, the breadth of Mikkeller’s lineup is truly exhaustive, ranging
from pale ale and pilsner to strong dark stout
and fruity cream ale, all labeled with winsome
monikers like “Mikkel’s Dream American Pilsner”
(¥650) and “Crooked Moon Tattoo DIPA” (¥750).
The abundance of choice should win the
hearts of beer aficionados of all walks of life.
Moreover, beers on tap come in two sizes, a small
glass or a pint, so that allows you an opportunity
to savor a few brews on any given visit. (The
former starts at the affordable price of ¥550.)
The staff’s choice is Mikkeller’s “Spontan
Series” of lambic brews such as Udagawa
Spontanale (¥550). Brewed in a unique process
called “spontaneous fermentation,” with its
roots in Belgium, Spontanale has a distinctive
sour aftertaste and is a rare enough type of
beer that it is only sold at this location as well as
a few specialty shops and bars in Japan.
Word of mouth has apparently spread
amongst the city’s burgeoning population of
craft beer devotees. When Metropolis paid
a visit on a recent Friday night, the barroom
was bustling with locals as well as international
patrons craving something other than what
Japan’s typical beer brands have to offer. (After all, products like Asahi Super Dry and Kirin
Ichiban account for over 90% of domestic beer
consumption.)
Mikkeller offers a breath of fresh air for
those just seeking a good time as well: the
establishment provides a rare opportunity to
booze and schmooze in a generously spacious
front terrace. It’s a welcome change of scenery
in this city of cramped izakayas, sorely lacking
in such social environments.
Please be warned that the food menu (as
yet) consists only of side dishes, including a
charcuterie plate of bread, pickles, and salami
(¥1,500). Non-alcoholic schmoozers need not
worry, however: Fuglen’s signature Cold Brew
coffee (¥500) is also served, which comes in
a handsome slim bottle.

Yuzu Koshō
Coleslaw
RECIPE AND PHOTO BY RIEKO SUZUKI
There are millions of coleslaw recipes out there,
and we all have our favorites. This one is very
simple with the refreshing spiciness of yuzu
koshō—one of the most flavorful seasonings in
Japan, in my opinion. Use onions with mild flavor
to avoid diluting the sensation of yuzu koshō.
You can also wash sliced onions with water, then
drain tightly to remove excess moisture, before
mixing them with other ingredients.
Cooking time: Active 20 min
Servings: 2-3 side dishes
INGREDIENTS
•1/3 head of cabbage
•1 large onion
•1 large carrot
•80cc mayonnaise
•80cc unsweetened yogurt
•⅓ tsp sugar
•1 tbsp yuzu koshō
•1 tbsp lemon juice
DIRECTIONS
1. Peel the carrot and onion. Slice all vegetables
into thin sticks or ribbons.
2.In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, yogurt, sugar,
yuzu koshō, and lemon juice. Mix well.
3.In large bowl, mix sauce with vegetables. Let
rest in fridge for 30 min or more before serving.

TOKYO FASHION WEEK

Tradition on Trend
raditional Japanese fashion was thrust to
the fore this Tokyo Fashion Week, with
heavy metal band X-Japan’s frontman
Yoshiki Hayashi being given the coveted
headliner spot for his new kimono venture Yoshikimono. Those expecting a restrained show in
line with Yoshiki’s recent penchant for classical
music—which culminated in him even penning
a song for the tenth anniversary of Emperor Akihito’s enthronement—were partially correct. The
man himself took to the runway behind a hanya
mask before playing a highly accomplished
piano accompaniment to
the show itself—on his
own bespoke piano no
less. The kimono fashion,
on the other hand, harked
back to the visual-kei
glam metal excess of the
1980s, where the man
first made his name.
The s taples of XJapan’s stage costumes
were out in force, with
punk studs turning up
on obi belts, lashings of
lace, S&M dog-collars,
and chains binding
the body. Even on the
k i m o n o t h e m s e l ve s ,
leopard print, skull, and
Chrome Hearts luxury
gothic imagery turned
up in spades. These were balanced by nods to
more traditional Japanese floral motifs, which
all built to a sense that Yoshiki was trying—and
succeeding—to help a non-Japanese audience
connect with the kimono. References like layering a studded black-leather belt on top of an obi
belt hammered the point home, although the
shiny patent boots, fishnets, and metal-studded
bras the models were styled with might have
shifted the balance out of the comfort zone of
his domestic fans, who were doing a fine job of
representing the brand at the venue.
Still, it must be remembered that this was a
show not preaching to the converted, but rather
trying to reach a new audience who ordinarily
would never dream of donning a kimono. Thanks
to the headliner status of the Mercedes Benzsponsored venue, all eyes were on the show.
And whatever you made of it, there is no doubt
he put the kimono back in the fashion spotlight.

Those yearning for a
somewhat more modest
way to keep tradition
in fashion had plenty
of options to choose
from, not least Takeshi
Kunitomo’s brand Gouk,
known by many as part
of the H.Naoto stable
of subcultural brands.
Gouk’s usual strategy
to keep young people
interested in traditional
Japanese fashion is to
play to anime and manga
fans by building popcultural references into
the gothic wa mix. This
time, however, Kunitomo marked his first-ever
showing on the Tokyo Fashion Week schedule
with a high-fashion direction, experimenting with
a more refined base, and paying literal homage to
traditional Japanese fashion by using real antique
textiles, many over 70 years old.
The show was packed with on-trend methods for building tradition into ensembles, sheer
embroidered textiles were right in line with
current Harajuku trends, and yuzen dyeing
was deployed for the prints. Even in the styling,
Gouk offered new tweaks to age-old classics,
building the notoriously tiny traditional Japanese handbags to a scale you could get an iPad
in, and styling some looks with Western-style
shoes while still providing sandals for those
who want them.

Inside the Head of
Mr. and Mrs. White
J
enny Fax, from Taiwanese designer
Shueh Jen-Fang, and Mikio Sakabe’s
eponymous brand are pretty much
universally acknowledged as the most
exciting alternative fashion brands coming out
of Japan right now. Few know, however, that
the two designers are actually a power couple,
both working out of the same Tokyo atelier.
Given the proximity of their work in real life, as
well as aesthetic terms, a collaboration runway
show was surely an inevitability, and this time
the Tokyo fashion underground got exactly what
they wanted. And want it they did, with the show
having to be staged twice to accommodate the
sheer number of fans who flocked to LaForet
Museum in LaForet Harajuku.
The catwalk was staged as a church of sorts,
complete with a choir that cheered its way
through the show. At the centerpiece was not a
cross, but rather a small model of a contemporary
two-story Japanese house. And the hymn? The
instantly recognizable “Sekisui House no Uta”
that anyone who has lived in Japan will know
as the jingle to the Sekisui House commercials.
At first, the pair seemed to want to put in the
frame a conservative, peace-loving Japanese
family, but it was clear that they also wanted to
show the discord at the heart of these perfect
family scenes. Outside the church stage, a
burlesque dancer tried to grab the audience’s
attention from her podium, and a team of
besuited office workers staged an alternative
catwalk using Cabbage Patch Kid dolls with
absorbed childlike concentration. In short, it was
chaos—but a chaos that was a glimpse inside
the psyche of a pair who are rapidly ascending
to iconic status.
On the fashion itself, Jenny Fax’s output on
the runway depicted a number of girly kawaii
archetypes, but all with a dark twist that the
designer herself referred to as “curses.” Hair
brushes were stuck in her models’ hair like
knives, frilly dresses looked as if they were
melting, and some models walked the runway
just in their underwear with their faces painted
as shojo manga characters in an uncomfortable
challenge to the sexualization of youth. In essence, it was a trip back to the ’80s “Pink House”
era of Japanese fashion, and one that echoes
trends at large in Japanese mainstream fashion.
Jenny Fax just wanted to show the darker side.
As for Mikio Sakabe, his collection arrived
without warning halfway through Jenny Fax’s
runway, with him taking aim at the current transient trend-based nature of fashion. His clothes
looked as if they were halfway between shifting
from one garment to another, as if it was going
out of fashion even as it was being worn. This
theme was further echoed by the fact that he
splattered the models with paint backstage just
before the show in an attempt to create a moment
that could never be replicated, painting over
the clothes on to the body and even cementing
bags to the models’ hands with viscous paint. In
the collection, Sakabe was asking just what has
substance in fashion by presenting ensembles
that were only half-finished but looked perfectly
complete from the front. They were just strapped
in place with elastic at the back. Perhaps the
enfant terrible of Japanese fashion is accusing
the industry at large of a lack of substance.

CLOUDS OF
SILS MARIA
Veteran actress Maria Enders (a spot-on Juliette
Binoche) launched her career a few decades
back with her portrayal of a young personal
assistant to an older businesswoman in the play
“Maloja Snake.” In it, her character seduces and
uses the older woman, eventually driving her
to suicide. Now Maria has reluctantly agreed to
appear in a stage revival of the play, but this time
as the older woman, opposite Hollywood hottie
Jo-ann Ellis (Chloe Grace Moretz), a bad-girl
celebrity with a constant retinue of paparazzi.
But the main story lies in the differences in
interpretation of the situation between Maria
and Val (Kristen Stewart), her own personal
assistant. Parallels emerge. All three actresses
do some of their best work to date, but Stewart’s
unforced and convincing performance shows
once again that there’s way more to her than
that Twilight twaddle. Although it’s in English,
this is in theme and approach a French film, and
it may be a little meandering for some. Director
Olivier Assayas is less interested in advancing
a plot than he is in his characters and what they
say. Interesting to note that the director’s 1985
Rendez-vous helped launch Binoche’s career.

Grandma and Grandpa are weird. One of the kids is an

Jason Statham. In his
stead, we have the kind of Eurotrashy Ed Skrein. He’s
got the beard stubble right, but does little else to evoke
Statham’s raspy, stone-faced presence, which brought all
the silliness together. In this attempted reboot, driver-forhire Frank Martin must chauffeur/safeguard a quartet of

way the little space thingy used their smartphones to
communicate. On the minus, the script’s fairly dumb and
it’s filmed in the old-long-ago found-footage gimmick
that makes it an effort to watch. All in all, a likable

minutes in, when Peter is greeted at Blackbeard’s “pixum

FANTASTIC FOUR
Going in, I was prett y
sure this F4 origin story
reboot couldn’t be worse
than that 2005 turkey.
Well, wrong again,
Morty. For a movie based on an action comic, there’s
precious little action and virtually no fun going on. The
promising young cast (Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael
B. Jordan, Jamie Bell) is swallowed up in a dark and
dully downbeat story that never really goes anywhere.
This cynical, even panick y—on the part of Fox—
attempt to restart a franchise is such a clear setup for
an increasingly unlikely sequel that it resembles, more
than anything else, the world’s longest pre-credits
sequence. (100 min)

counterbalance his perhaps overly ordered philosophy.
Rickman plays Louis XIV, and a scene-stealing Stanley

means to attempt this.
STAGE
GOD BLESS
BASEBALL
Director Toshiki Okada probes
Japan-Korea-U.S. perceptions
through baseball
Differences between American and Japanese baseball have been explored in books
like You Gotta Have Wa and films such as
Mr. Baseball. How does God Bless Baseball
add to this work?
Unlike these, I’m not considering the differences between Japanese and American
baseball. Rather, the comparison is between
Japan and Korea at one level, with America
standing above us. For example, the fact that
Japanese and Korean players now go to the
major leagues is a way to judge how much
both countries have improved. We compete
over how many players we have in the major
leagues. I’m interested in these kinds of relations between the countries.
Who are the South Korean members of the
team, and how did you come to work with
them?
Yoonjae Lee is an energetic and effective
actor. Actress Sung Hee Wi is a veteran of
physical theater, and also a choreographer.
I auditioned them both last summer in Seoul.
BY DAN GRUNEBAUM
P
rizewinning playwright Toshiki Okada’s
God Bless Baseball examines Japan and
South Korea’s complicated ties with the
United States through the lens of sport,
also offering a new way of looking at the two
countries’ own troubled history. Over a century
since America’s national pastime arrived in both
nations, Metropolis heard from Okada about
the motivations behind his new piece and the
differing Japanese and Korean approaches to
the sport ahead of the work’s staging as part
of this year’s Festival/Tokyo.
Why did you choose baseball as a subject for
this Japan-Korea project?
I’d wanted to create a work about baseball for
a long time, but I didn’t know when I would
be able to do it. When this year’s Asian Arts
Theatre festival in Gwangju invited me to participate, I thought to create a joint production
bringing together Japanese and Korean actors.
It may have been intuitive to choose baseball
because of the popularity of the sport in both
countries. And as baseball implies a strong
American influence, it made sense to include
[the U.S.] too. The influence of America is an
essential question for both countries, and both
are trying to figure out how to think about the
U.S., so it made [for] an ideal theme.

Owlspot Theater, Nov 19-29.
Tell us about your personal experience of
baseball.
I played as a kid—but only because my father
strongly wanted me to, and it wasn’t much fun.
One coach would beat us for no reason. So for
me, baseball was a traumatic experience; it’s
actually the worst memory of my life. For that
reason, I’d long wanted to write a play about
baseball.
How does baseball differ in Japan and Korea?
Korea seems to lack the connection with
spirituality, the earnestness, the sometimes
coercive nature of Japanese baseball. The
fans I saw in Seoul come for the excitement.
Fans are invited to hold drinking competitions
or propose marriage on big screens in the
stadium.
How can baseball provide a new way for
Japan and Korea to approach America?
I hope the play can help us think about what
America means to the people of both countries. One way to consider the U.S. is through
the popular sport of baseball, as America
looms large for both countries. But this means
I was lumping together Japan and South Korea, which created various challenges. When
you think about both countries, historical
FESTIVAL/TOKYO
The eighth edition of Japan’s most ambitious theater
festival presents a range of works throughout
November at venues centered in Ikebukuro. In addition
to God Bless Baseball, presented in Japanese, Korean,
and English, a number of works offer English subtitles.
All the Sky Above the Earth (Wendy’s Syndrome) is
Spanish theater giant Angélica Liddell’s consideration
of themes of sex, violence, and madness through
the eyes of Peter Pan’s Wendy, who visits Utøya, the
Norwegian island where 69 young people were killed
in 2011.
Being Faust – Enter Mephisto is a smartphoneenabled reinterpretation of the famous German legend
by the Goethe-Institut Korea and game development
company Nolgong in which the audience itself takes
on the role of Faust.
Folks in Shizuoka can enjoy an English-titled
rendition of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, while a number of other works are rooted in
physical movement and can be enjoyed regardless
of language. Among these, the focus in this year’s
program on Myanmar’s burgeoning theater scene
in Roundabout in Yangon promises three works that
range from performance and installations to video
works and music.

MUSIC
COLLABRO
The spotlight’s on the U.K.’s
musical theater boyband
BY MARTIN LEROUX
I
n 2013, aspiring U.K . singers Jamie
Lambert and Matt Pagan conversed over
Facebook about forming a band with
which to perform in hotels across Europe.
Soon, they embarked on a nationwide search
for members, which led them to meet fellow
hopefuls Michael Auger, Thomas J. Redgrave,
and Richard Hadfield. Two years later, the
quintet—known as Collabro—has two albums,
a sold-out U.K. tour, and fan bases worldwide
under their belt. Fresh off a U.S. trip to sign a
major record deal, the group is now preparing
for their first Japan tour in November along
with the release of their second album, Act
Two.
Collabro’s renown owes itself to the group’s
classical vocal style and rich harmonies, using
these qualities to deliver musical theater standards in a pop format—filling a niche relatively
absent in the mainstream boyband palette.
And while the members’ individual musical
tastes are varied—Redgrave’s a metal head,
Auger’s into pop, Pagan and Hadfield are both
lovers of swing, and Lambert’s a fan of opera—
musical theater is a shared passion over which
they’ve bonded due to its expressive nature.
“In a musical, the songs are often there
when the character can no longer express
themselves through just speaking,” explains
Hadfield, a rugby-loving Brighton native,
former street musician, and the youngest of
the group at 21. “The emotion is too great to
simply put into standard words.”
“The soulful lyrics and the storylines in
musical theater shows are so special,” adds
23-year-old Pagan from Carlisle. “Take Les
Misérables for example—‘Bring Him Home’ …
people can relate to it, if they know somebody
in the armed forces.”
In particular, Les Misérables was instrumental to kick-starting Collabro’s career. One
month after their formation, the unit auditioned
for the 2014 season of Britain’s Got Talent and
wowed the judges and audience with a rousing
performance of “Stars” from the Victor Hugo
novel-turned-Broadway musical. Their rendition of the tune is now the most well-known in
their oeuvre.
“This is collectively our favorite musical,”
states Auger, a 25-year-old Portsmouthian,
who was pursuing a career in finance before
joining the group.
Collabro would go on to win the competition
and sign with judge Simon Cowell’s record label
Syco, on which they released their first album
Stars in 2014. The album debuted at number one.
The following year, they headlined a tour of the
U.K., and performed showcases on TV in Portugal, the U.S., and Japan. The latter trip in particular
was a memorable experience for the guys.
“Going up Tokyo Tower was amazing, and
seeing Zōjō-ji Temple; those are great memories,” adds Redgrave, a fan of anime who used to
work at a Japanese restaurant prior to Collabro’s
success. The 26-year-old states that his favorite
memory, however, was going on popular TV
show Music Station, where he met the likes of
Mr. Children and Naoto Inti Raymi, who was “one
of the friendliest men I’ve ever met.”
“We love Japan,” says Lambert, 26, a selfprofessed fan of mangas Naruto and Ouran
High School Host Club.
Now, Collabro is preparing for their first
Japan tour, which will see them perform at
Tokyo’s Bunkamura Orchard Hall and the Orix
Theater in Osaka. As such, the five Brits muse
on the impression with which they hope to
leave Japanese audiences.
“We like to give an all-rounded show when
we perform,” says Hadfield.
“We put so much effort and emotion into our
shows; we work to make our audiences feel
every word of the song,” Redgrave explains.
“We want to be able to make even non-English
speakers feel the emotions that we are singing.”
Moreover, the boys are grateful to be able
to tour the world, making music with their
best friends.
“We really do feel like brothers,” says Auger.
“We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and we really enjoy spending time together and singing. Making music is something
we’ve all grown up wanting to do—so to be
singing for a living makes us all very happy.”

PAYING FOR DENTAL PROCEDURES
BY GRACE BUCHELE MINETA
Dentists, doctors, orthodontists. Having lived in Japan for most of my adult
life, the only prices I know for services by these are Japanese prices. The other
day, a friend complained on Facebook about paying over $1,000 (roughly
¥100,000) to have two cavities drilled in America, and I was shocked; I got
three of my own cavities drilled this year in Japan for less than ¥7,000 ($70)
total. Of course, I know there’s a price difference between things in the U.S.
and Japan—but actually seeing that price difference when buying glasses,
a car, or having dental procedures performed surprises me. It’s even more
awkward when Japanese friends and family ask the usual “How much does
[insert thing] cost in America?” and I have to answer honestly, “I don’t know.”

The spirit of an Aries heart can easily
be sparked. It may not be a flame
that scorches, however, as energies
on Earth are correcting for balance. This has a
corresponding response of releasing anything
that doesn’t merge with the subtle realms of
technology. For those Aries who are going
through an ultra challenge, you’re at the top of
the list, clearing whatever is no longer “you.”
A Taurus doesn’t give up. You may take
a break, but your schedule says you’ll
be back to fight another day. In the
meantime, you have more than enough to keep
you distracted. A flight of fancy—or another
locale—cheers you right up. Storm clouds float
off your shoulders. Jupiter connects with Venus
and Mars. It’s time to take a creative risk or run
away to romance; both are allowed!
Sometimes you just need to give that
upscale gray matter of yours a rest.
Mercury, your ruler, governs your
thoughts. It’s in your house of romance. Find
what you’re looking for in places that accent art,
beauty, and nature. A secret surrounding work
may have a beam of light focused into its darkest
coffers. You could receive recognition, or even a
bonus if you’re involved.
Just when you think you’re completely played out, you find another
wedge of interest to keep you going.
Jupiter, Venus, and Mars all combine to make
whatever you hear this week worth considering.
Plans are expanded, money in the bank seems
possible, and creativity to attract what you need
puts your dreams into action. All this combines to
lighten your spirits—not bad for Halloween week!

Your popularity has popped through
the roof. Even though you haven’t
been looking for at tention—well,
not much—Ceres is on the precipice of your
solar seventh house. You’ll attract a number
of people who would consider you a partner,
whether you’re in a relationship or not. It’s
nice to be noticed, isn’t it? Enjoy what is welldeserved. Money expansion swings in your
favor. If you’re single, use it wisely.
Modest as you are, you still like
positive strokes. It would be unrealistic to think you’re not going to
experience a bit of head-turning this week.
Jupiter, Venus, and Mars connect in your sign.
Especially at this time of year, these planets like
you. Right now is the time to grab an expansive
chance for love, money, or a sexy connection. If
you do, expect fireworks and a cozy Halloween.
Costume ready?
Just when you think you’ve pushed
too far, there’s another step added
to the bridge you’re building. You
may not have thought of it that way, with the
shocks and jolts thrust upon you. The truth is,
recent events have caused you to switch on
an internal lever. You’re not going to go back
through the forest of no return. You’re going forward, and you’re doing it with Halloween ease.

Sagittarians need to slow down. It

from “Happy Halloween” to “Happy Birthday,”
and this shows in your chart. Saturn is doing
his utmost to encourage you to trust your own
decisions. Mercury, Juno, and Dark Moon Lilith

do this once in a while!
Capricorns have more than one invitation and are wondering which one
piques their interest the most. The
attractive one, the moneyed one, the one promising to run away and leave the past behind?
Aspects of this are what Pluto intended as he
started his tumultuous descent into your sign.
Crumbled cake no longer gets your attention;
a new layer of icing could mean a bakery that’s
worth a visit.
You’d love to have time to talk—you
really would. But what you’ve set into
motion is going to grow, and quickly.
It’s true that some of your projec ts have
taken on a life of their own, and that may be
an understatement. Ceres has just entered
Aquarius and a partnership is going to be more
of a support and less of a distraction. While
that’s a relief for Aquarians, you’ll still be busy
this week.
Partnership is very much on the
horizon, or already in your midst.
Jupiter, Venus, and Mars create an
equation that makes sense as you dash about.
Uranus in your solar second house of money
brings insights. Sure, this planet of brilliance
flashes an offer and then disappears; it can be
maddening. At the same time, with Mercury
temporarily opposite said trickster, you may
get what you ask for.

Because prevention is intangible, Japanese
tend to emphasize treatment instead.
Communication is also intangible and often
overlooked. Patients in Japan accept the routine
approach of Japanese dentistry as being the
norm; therefore, people don’t really know how
to talk to their dentist about their problems and
concerns. This makes it difficult for dentists to
explain the advantages of new equipment and
methods to patients. Furthermore, the fact that
public dental schools lean heavily on paper testing rather than practical testing to build up these
intangible skill sets doesn’t help the situation.
So, here are some specific things to consider
when selecting your dentist in Japan:
COST & INSURANCE
Maintaining the
Perfect Smile
What to do when you need
a dentist in Japan
BY DR. MIYU TAKASHIMA
G
etting sick in a foreign country can lead
to unexpected stress. When in our home
country, we know where to go and what to
do. We also know what to expect in terms
of services, fees, and insurance.
When it comes to seeking out or receiving
dental treatment in Japan, my friends from
abroad often express concern about what to
Dental treatment can be very expensive in many
countries, and using insurance you have back
home can be even more difficult. Fortunately,
general costs for dental treatments in Japan
are far lower than those in the United States, for
example. Here, the average fee for a root canal
is between $50 and $70. In the U.S., the same
procedure will run you $800-$1,500. With the
right dentist, you can get the level of treatment
you would expect back home, and manage the
costs as well. Some dentists will accept your
private overseas insurance. Ask your dentist
whether they only want to use options covered
by the national health insurance system for your
treatment, or if they look for the superior solution
that will be better for you in the long term.
look for. Let me break it down for you.
This is the exact dental care you should seek:
The best customized care advised by dental
specialists. Obvious? Yes. But here’s why it has
to be this way.
NATIONAL POLICY
The government controls prices in order to manage the costs of providing coverage. While the
National Health Insurance system makes basic
dental treatment more affordable to Japan's
citizens, many advanced procedures are not
covered. This discourages dentists from using
the most modern techniques, medicines, and
materials.
Many Japanese dentists study and offer
more advanced treatments. The key is getting
to know your dentist.
JAPANESE CULTURE
Japanese often say “Can you make it as a service?” when we want something extra for free.
Culturally, Japanese tend to place monetary
value on products, but not on service. This also
holds true when it comes to health/dental care.
TREATMENT
If a root canal is in the cards, find out if your
dentist uses a rubber dam (a latex sheet that
prevents the bacteria in saliva from splashing
back into the tooth). Without it, you cannot fix the
root cause, and it will likely reoccur. Although,
there are more than 68,000 dental clinics in
Japan, only 2% use it.
STERILIZATION
The easiest way to gain comfort about the safety
of a clinic is to check which type of autoclave they
use for sterilization. Class B is the best, and 5%
of clinics in Japan use it. Class N is also good if
they don’t pack their instruments.
These are good starting points for finding out
whether a dentist is right for you. And making
sure that you have the right match for your treatment needs will make all the difference when it
comes to a positive experience when receiving
dental treatment in Japan.
