welcome from the gkcbca - Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches
WELCOME FROM THE GKCBCA
A
s President of the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches
Association (GKCBCA), it is my pleasure to welcome all of you
to the GKCBCA All-Star Challenge.
The GKCBCA, represented by more than 600 area high school,
college and youth coaches, is working to improve the quality of
basketball in the greater Kansas City area, to provide scholarships
for deserving student-athletes and to bring attention and
recognition to the sport we love – high school basketball.
Tonight’s games feature some of the best high school basketball players to ever step on the
hardwood in this area. These 48 senior boys and girls have made us proud while representing
their schools, their communities and our area in local, regional and state competitions.
Some have been conference champions, All-Metro players and state champions.
For one last time, we get an opportunity to see them as high school stars, before they
embark on a great journey to college and into their professional careers.
We thank all of our Corporate Teammates for their support of high school basketball and the
GKCBCA. We thank you for attending and supporting high school basketball. And, we thank
these fine athletes for all of the hours of hard work, dedication and commitment they have
given us over the years. Enjoy the games!
Sincerely,

THE GREATER KANSAS CITY
BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION
Overview
T
he Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association
(GKCBCA) is a not-for-profit organization that was created in
the fall of 1997.
The idea for creating the organization came from head coaches Ed
Fritz (Blue Valley Northwest HS), Chuck Minor (then of Schlagle
HS) and Rick Zych (Park Hill South HS). Working with other coaches
in the area, bylaws and policies were established and plans were
put in place for the Association to begin operating.
Since its establishment, the GKCBCA has worked hard to support
and improve the quality of basketball in and around the greater
Kansas City area and recognize excellence at both playing and
coaching levels.
The GKCBCA membership represents high schools, several
colleges and universities, as well as many youth leagues and
organizations. The Association is open to all youth, junior high,
high school and college men’s and women’s basketball coaches
(including assistants) in the greater Kansas City area.
Programs and Highlights
T
he GKCBCA holds two coaching clinics in the fall of each year.
More than 300 coaches from the Kansas City area attend these
clinics. The list of speakers for past clinics is quite impressive and
has included Bob Huggins, Steve Alford, Mike Anderson, Bill
Self, Roy Williams, Frank Martin, Bruce Pearl, Bruce Weber, Deb
Patterson and Norm Stewart.
Achievement Award, Walt Tylicki Memorial Award, and the
GKCBCA Hall of Fame.
Mission Statement
T
he Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association was
founded for the purpose of supporting and improving the
quality of basketball in the greater Kansas City area. The objectives
of the organization are as follows:
• Promote strong relationships with all basketball-related
organizations.
• Create educational opportunities for coaches.
• Recognize excellence at both the playing and coaching levels.
• Support other charitable organizations.
Organization
A
volunteer Board of Directors governs the organization. The
Board consists of officers and representatives from Missouri,
Kansas and “at-large.”
The GKCBCA’s biggest event is the annual All-Star Challenge. This
weekend-long event begins with an awards show, held this year
at Shawnee Mission South High School.
The show is held to honor the players and coaches selected
to participate in the All-Star Challenge, recognize academic
excellence, and to announce several coaching and playing awards
such as the DiRenna Award which is given to the top high school
male and female player in the Kansas City area. The coaching
awards include the Eddie Ryan Award, Tom Colwell Lifetime

ince 1999, the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association has honored area coaches and individuals with induction into the GKCBCA Hall of Fame.
The criteria for selection include: minimum of 20 years as a head basketball coach (high school or college), with 15 years in the Kansas City area, a
minimum of 300 career wins as a high school varsity or college head coach, positive role model for players, school and community; and achieved positive impact/
influence on Kansas City basketball and their own program(s).
Class of 2013
Roger Giger‘s 31-year career includes a unique
combination of coaching and leadership positions
in school administration.
Dan Miller began his 21-year tenure as Head
Coach of the Hickman Mills’ Varsity Basketball team
in 1984, after serving as assistant coach under Glen
McDonald for seven years. Under Miller’s tutelage,
the Cougars posted more than 350 wins, won eight
Conference Championships, seven district titles,
and played in the state finals twice.
Giger was the head girl’s coach for 26 years and the
head boy’s coach for 2 years at North Platte High
School. Prior to that he served 1 year as the head
girls coach in Elk Creek, Nebraska.
During his coaching career, his teams won
an impressive 395 games and captured 6
KCI conference championships, 5 district
championships (including the first ever district tile in school history for the boys
team in 2011), and made 2 trips to the Final Four (1989 and 2006). Overall,
he guided his teams to seven 20-plus win seasons and was named Northwest
Missouri District Coach of the Year twice (1989 and 2006).
In addition to coaching, Giger served as a Junior High Principal for 12 years and a
High School Principal for 4 years. He also served as the KCI Conference secretary
for 19 years and was named northwest Missouri MIAA AD of the year in 2007.
Working in the education profession is a family affair for the Gigers. His wife, Lisa
spent over 30 years as an educator and daughter Miranda is currently a 3rd grade
teacher and son Mitch is student teaching at Park Hill.
Following an early retirement from Missouri in
2005, Coach Miller moved to the Kansas side and
served as Varsity Head Coach at Shawnee Mission
North High School for two years. Though he officially retired in 2007, Miller has
worked as the Varsity Assistant Coach at Raymore Peculiar High School in Missouri
for the last six years, where he continues to enjoy the process of coaching and
mentoring.
Dan Miller was honored as Conference Coach of the year five times during his
career, and was inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in
2008. He received the prestigious Lambert Award in 1991 from William Jewell
College, which honors the region’s top prep coach. In addition, he was honored
as Coaching Legend of 2010 from the annual Jim Draper Basketball Tournament.
Miller is currently enjoying his retirement and the ability to spend more time with
family and friends. He is the proud father of four children, Trisha, Kyle, Brooke,
and Kellie, is father-in-law to Troy and Kasey, and takes great pleasure in his four
grandchildren, Hayden, Paige, Hudson, and Cheyenne.

EDDIE RYAN COACHING AWARD
PRESENTED BY
T
he Eddie Ryan Award is presented annually to the top boys and girls
coach in the Greater Kansas City area.
Eddie Ryan began his coaching career in 1948 where he served as
head coach at Rockhurst College. After a brief stint at Rockhurst, he
later went on to coach Pembroke Country Day School until his tragic
death in 1964.
During his tenure at Pembroke, he led the Raiders to four
consecutive Missouri state tournaments from 1955-58, capturing the
state title in 1956 and 1957. During his 10-year career at Pembroke,
Ryan compiled an overall record of 213-60, winning 19 or more games
in all but two seasons.
In 1966, former players of Eddie Ryan established the award in
memory of their coach. In addition to his outstanding record, Ryan was
noted for his unselfish desire to work with high school age athletes and
was respected for the positive influence he exerted on his players.
It is in the spirit of Ryan’s hard work, success, integrity,
sportsmanship and disregard for personal recognition that the award
is presented. The inscription on the “Eddie Ryan” plaque was composed
by Ernie Mehl, former sports editor of The Kansas City Star, and reads:
“We who played for him and who still care for him as he cared for
us, dedicate this award to Eddie Ryan in the belief that what he taught
and what he coached, the morals he instilled, the code he himself
respected and asked that it be accepted by others; in his concern for
all, his warmth, his sincerity is best remembered and which will, like
the sun, beam down through the years, all these constitute a memorial
which will live in our hearts.”

THE DIRENNA AWARDS
I
n 1954, Dr. James A. DiRenna
established the DiRenna Award to
annually honor the top boys basketball
player in the Greater Kansas City area. In
1997, the award also began recognizing
the top girls player.
Dr. DiRenna, who passed away
in 1996, was a well-known surgeon,
teacher and hospital developer. He also
provided financial assistance to several
students attending medical school.
Dr. DiRenna enjoyed sports as much as his work in the medical
profession. In addition to the DiRenna
Award, he also supported the Greater
Kansas City Golden Gloves by serving as
its general chairman and establishing a
scholarship fund for amateur boxers.
His son, Dr. James A. DiRenna, Jr.,
has continued the tradition of this award
with the assistance of the Greater Kansas
City Basketball Coaches Association. The
award is presented each year at the AllStar awards show in April, prior to the AllStar Challenge basketball games.
