Character Creation
Once you start up Pirate101 for the first time, the first thing you’ll need to do is…create a pirate!
You will be asked several questions to tailor suit your pirate, as seen in the below screenshots:
8
Character Creation | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Once you have created your pirate, you’ll then find yourself trapped in an Armada Brig that you
must escape! Read the tutorial section below on what to expect.
Tutorial
As you begin the tutorial process, you’ll find yourself trapped within an Armada Brig.
The tutorial is a guide to show you some of the basics of Pirate101. Everything from character
movement, land combat and skyway combat, as seen below:

Should you create new pirates in the future, you will have the option to skip the tutorial, as seen below:

Entering the Game for the First Time
Once you complete the tutorial, you will find yourself in Avery’s office. This is where your adventure
truly begins!
Within Captain Avery’s office you will find yourself amongst other fellow pirates. This is a good
opportunity to chat, meet new friends, form a group and begin your adventures together!
Captain Avery will have your first of many quests for you to do. You will recognize Captain Avery by the
name above his head along with a “Wizbang”. A Wizbang is a yellow exclamation mark that alerts you
that an NPC has an available quest for you. Walk up to Captain Avery and click “x” to speak with him, as
seen below:

Character Classes
Each player in Pirate101 will be able to select one of
five different classes of pirate to play as. Each class has
its own unique abilities, strengths and powers.
Buccaneer
Buccaneers are the big hitters who wear the heaviest
class of armor and carry the largest weapons.
Buccaneers rely on raw strength and courage.
Musketeer
Musketeers are the best marksmen in the spiral, using
long range attacks with their lightning powder charged
weapons. Traps and trick shots make a Musketeer a
wily opponent indeed.
TIP!
Each class has a statistic that’s better to boost
than others:
 Buccaneers boost STRENGTH and
usually prefer “Smashy” weapons
 Witchdoctors boost WILL and usually
prefer “Staffy” and” Spooky” weapons.
 Swashbucklers boost AGILITY and
usually prefer “Stabby” weapons.
 Privateers boost STRENGTH for damage
and usually prefer “Slashy” weapons
(they also boost WILL for healing and
other powers)
 Musketeer’s boost AGILITY and usually
prefer “Shooty” weapons.
Privateers
Privateers are the natural leaders of the pirate world, attracting more Companions than any other class.
Their ability to rally their troops and heal them in the thick of battle can see them through the most
desperate battles.
Swashbucklers
Speed, finesse, and surprise are the qualities of the Swashbuckler. Deadly with a blade and using
surprise attacks, Swashbucklers inflict the greatest damage.
Witchdoctors
Masters of the mysterious powers of hoodoo, witchdoctors make the spookiest opponents.
Witchdoctors rely on hexes, magical blasts and charms to turn the odds to their favor.

Interface
Before you begin your adventure, let’s review each of the game’s menus.
When you move your mouse cursor to the top of the screen, a drop-down menu appears with several
icons to choose from, as seen below:
From left to right, the icons represent:








Menu Chat: Allows players to talk with each other, by selecting a variety of pre-packaged
phrases and emote animations
My Character: Information about your Character, Inventory, Skills & Powers, Badges and
Companions
My Quests, Maps, Windstones and Puppet Shows: This section provides info on available
Quests, Maps, Windstones and Puppet Shows
My Ship: Allows players to select and outfit any ships they own
The Crown Shop: Provides access to the Crown Shop for additional purchases
Help and Options: Change in-game settings, access additional help pages, replay tutorial tips
and quit the game
Bug Reporter and Feedback: Allows the user to report a game bug or provide feedback to
KingsIsle Entertainment. This will be a Beta only feature.
Friend’s List: Allows the user to add a friend, chat with a friend, invite a friend to Pirate101 and
use Friend Finder code and True Friend codes
Menu Chat
The Chat feature in Pirate101 remains virtually identical to the Chat feature in Wizard101. Parents,
please note that the same level of Chat privileges designated for Wizard101 player accounts will be
directly applied to their Pirate101 accounts as well.
Let’s begin with the Quick Chat Menu option. All players have access to this mode. Clicking on this
button generates pre-approved words and phrases to send to other players, without having to type, as
seen below:
13
Menu Chat | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
The next form of Chat is “Text Chat.” This Chat type allows the user to type in words allowed by our
dictionary and send to other users who also have “Text Chat” enabled. Players recognized as 13 or older
can use this Chat system. Players with “Under 13” accounts need a validated parent/guardian over age
18 to enable Text Chat, in order to use it. The parent/guardian must validate his/her age by buying a
Membership (or Crowns) with a valid credit card. If you meet these requirements, clicking the ENTER key
14
Menu Chat | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
brings up the chat text entry window. During Beta, this validation would have to be done by buying
Wizard Crowns or a Wizard subscription.
The next form of Chat is “Open Chat.” Members who are over the age of 18, and have a valid credit card
on file with KingsIsle Entertainment, can enable the 18+ Open Chat. This Chat will be filtered for
profanity, but will allow numbers and names. If you meet these requirements, click the ENTER key to
bring up the text entry window. In this channel, when players type their text they will see 3 colors in the
chat window: white means 13+ can see it, yellow means 18+ can see it, and red is completely filtered.
The next form of chat is “True Friends Chat.” Players can exchange a code with someone they know in
real life, and you can talk more openly with real friends. This Chat is still filtered for profanity and
inappropriate language and is available for Members only. True Friends must know each other in real
life. To learn more, see the Friends section.
The next form of Chat is “Group Chat.” This Chat type is only available when you are grouped with
others. Only those in your group will see this Chat. To initiate group Chat begin typing with “/G”.
The last form of Chat is “Private Chat”, also known as Whispering. This Chat type will allow you to speak
privately to a single player, from anywhere in the game world. To initiate Private Chat, begin typing with
“/T” and enter the player’s name, or use the Text Chat button on the Friends panel, once you’ve
selected your friend from the Friend’s list.
To bring up the Chat window, press the ENTER key. To close the Chat window, press the ESC key, or click
the little yellow “x” in the chat window’s upper right corner.
My Character
The hook icon’s menu contains “information about your character” including the following:






My Character (hotkey C)
My Inventory (hotkey B)
My Skills and Powers (hotkey P)
My Badges
My Companions
Place Decorations (when inside your home)
Let’s begin with the “My Character” menu option. Clicking this option brings up the “My Pirate” screen.
This page displays information about your character, such as your character level, current attributes,
training points and amount of available Gold and Crowns.
A view of the “My Pirate” page, shown below:

The hook is this page—the “My Pirate” page
The knapsack icon is the “My Inventory” page
The book icon will display the “My Skills & Powers” page
The badge icon displays the “My Badges” page
The chess piece icon displays the “My Companions” page
On the right side of the “My Pirate” screen are several character stats. These stats allow you to track
your pirate’s personal progress as you progress through the worlds. These stats can also change based
on what you have equipped. Most stats such as Strength, Agility and Will are combat focused, while the
heart symbol shows the current/maximum health your pirate currently has, which increases with each
level increase. Mouse over them to get more information about the stats and how much equipped items
hare boosting them.
If you’re looking to train your pirate and need to know how many training points are available to spend,
you can also view the amount available on this page.
16
My Character | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
The amount of gold and crowns available to your pirate are also found on this page. Note that there is a
limit to how much gold you can have (80,000 for non-members and 100,000 for members).
At the bottom of the “My Pirate” screen you will see nautical stats. These stats reflect time spent in the
skyways in Broadside Combat. The max nautical level is 50, the nautical title will update depending on
your nautical level and nautical experience is overall experience gained in broadside combat.
The area where you see your pirate stands is referred to as the “Preview Window”. This window will
show all equipped weapons and items. You can rotate your pirate in this window by clicking either of the
arrows or by holding down the left mouse button and moving your mouse left and right.
Above your Pirate is your pirate’s name along with the class and current level. Also displayed
is current/next level information, which shows you how close you are to achieving the next level.
Below the hook is the “My Inventory” knapsack tab. Click on this tab to display all currently carried and
equipped items, as seen below:
17
My Character | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Click along the top to filter the inventory by type: All, Hats, Outfits, Boots, Weapons, Totems, Necklaces,
Rings, Mounts, and Pets. You can access additional filters by clicking the right arrow button on the top
right of this page.
To equip an item, double click the item of your choosing. It will automatically equip to the correct
equipment slot. You’ll see a small “grasped hand” icon in the lower corner, indicating this is your
equipped item.
Before equipping an item, you’ll want to be sure that the item you are looking to equip is of better
quality than the one currently equipped. To do so, hover your mouse icon over the item you wish to
equip and a comparison window will appear, as seen below:
To delete an item, click on the item you wish to delete then click on the trash can at the bottom.
18

Pets
One special filter, on the right side, is the Pet filter. Pets can be carried in your inventory.
There are many pets to collect in Pirate101. They’re available in many ways: from vendors in the world,
from the Crown Shop, as rewards for badges, as rare loot from powerful bosses, and more.
To equip a pet, find it in your inventory and equip it by double-clicking on it. Once you have a pet
equipped, that pet has a chance to join you in combat! You won’t be able to control it, but it’ll do its
best to help you out.
If you’d rather have your pet follow you around the world, instead of your Firstmate, open the Options
screen, select the Gameplay options, and find the option called “Follower Is.” Choose “Pet,” rather than
“Firstmate”, as seen below:

My Skills and Powers
Now let’s discuss the “My Skills and Powers” option.
Not long after you begin your adventures in Skull Island, you will meet your Class Trainer, a person you’ll
want to remember and visit often. One such trainer can be seen below:

My Skills and Powers | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Class Trainers
Once you've chosen your character class, it's time to
learn some pirate skills. Each of the five classes has

special training points with them! All the Trainers in
the game are headquartered in the Skull Island
courtyard buildings. Don't forget to pay a visit to them all!
Your Class Trainer can teach you all of the Skills and Powers that your class is granted, those abilities will
be recorded on your “My Skills and Powers” page. Use the left and right arrows to scroll through
multiple pages, as seen below:

Class Trainers | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Once you have met your Trainer, you should make a habit of returning to Skull Island each time you gain
a level, to see if there is anything new for you to learn.

During combat players will have the opportunity to make use of Power Cards. Power Cards are obtained
from your trainer and have varying degrees of use. There are four symbols in each corner of the card
that indicates the following:
A) Turn duration: Represented by an hourglass. This category is used to display how long associated
effects will last.
B) Target range: Represented by an arced dotted line. This category is used to display the range at which
the caster can select a target.
C) Target action: Represented by a heart. This category is used to show the type of action the card
represents.
D) Target area and target type: Represented by a grid. This category is used to describe the area of
effect as well as being color coded to show whether this is an enemy or ally affecting card. Green = Ally
and Red = Enemy.
An example Power Card, shown below:

Badges
Next is the “My Badges” tab and screen, as seen below:
You can earn badges by accomplishing great feats, like defeating powerful bosses or discovering new
skyways. You’ll know when you earn a badge because text will appear in the middle of the screen, and
you’ll also receive a notification.
Every badge you earn grants you a title that appears under your name, like “Sky Traveler”, as seen
below:
24
Badges | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
TIP!
Some badges also award items
when earned—furniture, pets, and
more! So be sure to explore every
corner of every world—you never
know what secret you’ll discover
that will unlock a badge.
You can select which title you display by choosing the Badge in the My Badges screen.
Companion Management
Next is the My Companions tab and screen. This screen is very useful to make full use out of each
Companion that you receive.
The Companion Management page is divided into 3 parts:
1. A 4x4 grid on the left
2. A 3D window on the right
3. Some data and controls at the bottom.
The grid only shows up to 16 Companions, but rest assured you’ll end up with many more Companions
as you progress along. Once you get your 17th Companion you’ll be able to flip between pages of all your
Companions. As a Companion joins you, they are added to the end of your Companions list.
While many Companions can be obtained by all players, other Companions are only available for certain
classes. A good example of that is the first Companion you get – they’re unique to the class you’ve
chosen!
25
Companion Management | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
To select a Companion, click on their portrait on the grid. Your Companion now appears in the 3D
preview window and some basic info about them will display. Any Epic Powers they know will also
appear above their head, just below their name. You can also hover your mouse over a Companion’s
portrait on the grid to see info on their current combat stats, as seen below for Bonnie Anne. These stats
can have a heavy influence on how a battle goes.
26
Companion Management | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
The order of the portraits – as well as the number of Companions you have - determines the likelihood
that a Companion will be randomly chosen to join you in combat. Those odds are displayed below the
Companion’s portrait, right next to their class icon. Although combat selection is random, you can
change those odds by re-sorting the Companions’ order.
The closer a Companion is on the list to the Firstmate, the higher the odds that they’ll get picked for
combat (but no guarantees, except for the Firstmate). To move a Companion to a different location,
click and hold the left mouse button, then drag your Companion’s portrait where you want them to
reside and then release. Every Companion that is now between the dragged unit and the Firstmate now
gets their percentages re-factored.
The top left position of the grid is special, as it is the location of the Firstmate. The Companion in this
position will follow you around (unless you use the Options page to tell the game not to) and will always
join you in battle if they’re not unconscious (wounded in previous battle). Any Companion can be moved
to the Firstmate position.
27
Companion Management | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Companion Stats
Just like your pirate, all your Companions have stats such as Strength, Agility, Will, etc.). To see their
stats, hover the mouse pointer over the Companion’s portrait, as seen below:
28
Companion Stats | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
To see a detailed record of your Companion’s current Powers, click on the yellow triangle in the lower
right corner, at the bottom of the 3D Companion preview window.
29
Companion Stats | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
This will raise another window that displays the details about the Companion’s stats, as well as the Epic
Talents and Powers that they know (mouse over the icons to get info on each).
To close the panel, click on the triangle that is now up on the top of the window.
In all cases the higher the number the better.
Strength
Increases damage for melee weapons (Cutlass, Spears or Axes). Also used in comparison (vs.
target’s Strength) to add up to +25% bonus damage.
Agility
Increases damage for ranged weapons (Pistols & Muskets) and finesse weapons (Daggers).
Also used in comparison (vs. target’s Agility) to add up to +25% bonus damage.
Will
30
Companion Stats | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Increases damage for magical attacks, the effectiveness of voodoo powers, and any Powers.
Also used in comparison (vs. target’s Will) to add up to +25% bonus damage.
Accuracy
Improves the chance that attacks will hit the enemy.
Dodge
Decreases the chance that enemy attacks will hit.
Armor
Will reduce the damage taken from physical attacks (slashing, impact, and piercing damage).
Resistance
Will reduce the damage taken from magical attacks (fire, ice, and storm damage).
Damage
The damage an attack will typically deal. This is a range; the actual value used will vary in
combat, as the effects of certain skills are applied.
Health
This is the amount of damage that can be dealt to this unit before being defeated in combat.
Any Companion that survives combat will be restored to full health once they are outside of
combat. Those wounded in combat must be revived at a Life Fountain.
31
Companion Stats | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
How much damage is done to an enemy depends on a specific stat, during the attack. Each class has one
primary Stat that dominates how they attack in combat:





Buccaneer - Strength
Musketeer - Agility
Privateer - Will
Swashbuckler - Agility
Witchdoctor - Will
When a Buccaneer attacks, their Strength is compared to the target’s Strength. The higher the
Buccaneer’s Strength is, in relation to the target, the more damage is done. But on the other hand, if
that Buccaneer has low Will, and is attacked by a Witchdoctor, then the Buccaneer will take more
damage because the Witchdoctor’s attacks are based on Will, not Strength.
All of these Stats increase as you train your units.
Companion Training
Like your pirate, Companions can be trained. Every time you level up, you’ll also gain Companion
Training points that you can use to train up any of your Companions. You can see how many total
unused training points you have, by looking just to the left of
the Train button on the bottom right of the screen. Training
TIP!
does not cost anything except Training points.
The further apart you are from
If a Companion can be trained, when you select them the
TRAIN button will turn green. You’ll see two blue markers on
either side of a horizontal bar – the marker on the left shows
the current level and the marker on the right is the next level.
The bar between the two shows any partial progress towards
that next level.
your Companion in levels, the more
levels they gain when you spend a
training point on them. For
instance, if you are level 50 and
your Companion is level 1, a single
training point could net them
around 25 levels. The closer the
Companion is to your level, the less
they gain from each training point.
If you mouse over the Train button, you’ll see what will happen if you do decide to train the Companion.
32
Companion Training | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
The green bar shows how far you’ll advance, and the green text shows the change in damage and
health. Clicking on the Train button will actually make the change.
Within your Companion preview window you can also preview which stats will change before clicking
the TRAIN button by hovering your mouse icon over the TRAIN button, without clicking. Green text will
appear next to your current stat number that displays a positive gain that will be acquired after clicking
the TRAIN button, as seen below:
How much they advance depends on how much lower their level is than the player’s level; the player
can’t teach a Companion much, if they are both almost the same level.
Regardless of how much the Companion progresses, they can never train higher than the player’s
current level.
33
Companion Training | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
New Talents
When they gain a new level, Companions may also be offered a list of new Attribute Talents to choose
from, making them more powerful in combat. An Attribute Talent usually improves one or more of the
Companion’s stats. They are applied automatically; there’s nothing you need to do to use a normal
Talent, once you’ve given it to your Unit.
Whenever your Companions are ready to learn something new, you’ll see a lightning bolt in the upper
right corner of their portrait, like so:
To see a detailed record of your Companion’s current Powers, click on the yellow triangle in the lower
right corner, at the bottom of the 3D Companion preview window. This will raise another window that
displays the details about the Companion’s stats, as well as the Epic Talents and Powers that they know
(mouse over the icons to get info on each). To close the panel, click on the triangle that is now up on the
top of the window.
Companion Promotion
Companions are promoted within the “My Companion” screen. Promoting a Companion is not the same
thing as Training them: Promoting a Companion does a lot towards making them a more powerful team
mate.
If a Companion can be promoted – which usually happens when they reach certain levels—you’ll see a
yellow exclamation mark in the upper left corner of their portrait in Companion Management, indicating
that they want to talk to you.
When you see that a Companion is ready to talk to you about a Promotion, head to the nearest tavern
and go down to the cellar where you can see all your Companions standing around. Speak to your
Companion to begin their promotion quest.
34
New Talents | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Once you complete the quest, return to any tavern cellar to talk to the Companion again and they’ll be
promoted. Upon promotion, they’ll look different, and they may also be eligible to learn new Epic
Powers or Talents.
To teach them, open the Companion Management screen again and click on the New Power button (in
the same location as the Train button) – a list of new Epic Talents and Powers that you can choose from
will appear.
An Epic Talent is a talent that does more than just increase a stat. But they are still used automatically
by the Companion. Bonnie Anne’s Return Fire is a good example– she’ll try to use it automatically
whenever she’s fired upon (but won’t always succeed), getting a “free’ attack if it does succeed.
Powers are special abilities that can be triggered while in combat. Once you select the Companion in
combat, up to 7 Powers that they know will be randomly selected and displayed at screen bottom. You
can tell them which Power to use and who to target. Using a Power uses up that Companion’s turn; A
Companion can’t do a normal attack (or move) and use a Power, in the same round.
35
Companion Promotion | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Move your cursor over the list to see a brief description of each one, and then click on the one you
want. If you see a Talent or Power that you already have trained, but it has a number in parenthesis
after the name, this indicates a more powerful version that you can learn.
Companion Powers Reset
You may realize, after a while, that you really wanted a Companion to have different Talents, Epic
Talents, or Powers than the ones you selected. Fear not! You have the option to reset them. When a
unit that has learned Talents and Powers is selected, the Reset button will light up. When you click on it,
a confirmation pop-up appears, as seen below:
36
Companion Powers Reset | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Resetting a unit removes all the Talents and Powers previously trained, but does not affect the unit’s
level or experience bar. You can then add different Talents or Powers than you trained previously.
Companion Ability Resets is a Crowns-only feature.
Training Tomes
Training tomes give you additional Companion training points, allowing you to train your Companions
closer to your own character’s level.
You can find training tomes in two ways:
o You can purchase training tomes from professor NPCs in many taverns around the world. Take
heed: they don’t let you buy more than 10 at any one time, and the price goes up as you level!
o You can find training tomes hidden around the world. Keep an eye out! Once you find and use a
training tome in the world, you can’t use it again.
A sample sparkling training tome is resting on the ground to the left of the pirate, below:

My Puppet Shows
Let’s first discuss the “My Quests” menu. Clicking this option brings up the “Quests” page:

My Quests | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
The Quests screen can display up to four Quests at a time. If you have discovered more than four that
you haven’t completed, scroll arrows appear on the screen.
Each pane describes the Quest’s current name, goal, the NPC to talk to or the NPC(s) to defeat, where in
the game world to travel to, any rewards offered for completion of the quest, and even gives you a
handy button in the top left corner to replay a quest’s dialogue.
To choose a Quest and make it your active Quest, click on the Quest of your choosing, in this case, “A
Pirate’s Life for You.” A selected Quest will have a white outline. Selecting a quest will display the quest
helper arrow and text at the bottom of your screen. If you are already on a quest and you want to switch
to another quest, the quest helper arrow and text will switch to the recently chosen quest. Once you
have selected a Quest, click the “X” button to leave the Quests screen.
As mentioned, Quests have goals and rewards. These are indicated as icons displayed in the lower left
corner of the Quest pane, as seen below:

My Ship
To travel between locations in Pirate101, you’ll have to learn how to Captain a flying Pirate ship!
The ship icon’s menu allows players to launch any ship you’ve acquired or outfit a ship with ship items
you’ve acquired. Many of the items on this menu will not be accessible until you have received your first
Ship.
Let’s first choose the “Select Ship” menu option. Clicking this option launches a menu that allows you to
un-bottle one of your owned ships. If you un-bottle a ship while not in a dock, your ship will be waiting
for you the next time you enter a dock. If you don’t have any ships yet, don’t worry—you’ll have a ship
as soon as you finish your first job for Captain Avery on Skull Island.
Please note… you will be unable to dye your ship or purchase equipment for your ship if it is not unbottled.

Ships you own are normally kept in magic bottles, which – when uncorked – will summon them at a
dock. Successfully selecting a ship will un-bottle the ship (bottling any other ship you have un-bottled,
unless it’s the same ship). If it’s a newly-unbottled ship, it will also place you on the ship in front of the
helm (that’s a steering wheel, to landlubbers).
Next is the “Ship Equipment” menu. It allows you to browse any ship equipment you own and equip it to
your currently un-bottled ship, as seen below:
45
My Ship | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Your ship also has important vitals such as; Integrity, Armor Rank, Turning and Speed Rank. These vitals
can be viewed by hovering the mouse cursor over the ship icon in the 3D preview window.
Your ship’s vital statistics are as follows:
Ship Accuracy (base cannons)
Ship Defense
Ship Armor
Ship Rate of Fire (base cannons)
Ship Damage (base cannons)
Ship Health
46
My Ship | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Some of the items you can equip on a ship will alter these vitals. If you equip an item (such as a
figurehead) that allows you to summon a magical creature, these will have their own separate accuracy,
damage and rate of fire attributes.
New Ships and Ship Equipment
You can earn new ships by questing, purchasing them from the Crown Shop, or purchasing them from
vendors in game. Ship quest rewards are very rare! Fortunately, vendors are a little more common.
Generally, you’ll find one ship vendor per world. For more information about vendors, see the section
titled “Equipment Vendors” near the back of the guide.
Equipping Your Ship
You can find ship items and equip them on your ship just like you can on your player character. Also like
player equipment, ship equipment can be found as loot, received as a reward, purchased in the Crown
Shop, or purchased from a vendor in the world.
Ship items make your ship better. They can improve your ship’s statistics—making it faster, stronger,
and do more damage, in addition to other positive effects. Maybe most importantly, ship items grant
you powerful new abilities to use in ship-to-ship Broadside Combat.
The Crown Shop
The Crown Shop is your one stop shop for purchasing additional items for your character or house, in
Pirate101. Most items in the Crown Shop are not purchased with Gold but instead with “Crowns.” You
will need a valid credit card to purchase “Crowns”, to purchase from the Crown Shop. Crowns are
account-based and can be used by any pirate on that account.

Crowns Use during Beta
During the Beta; you will not be allowed to buy Crowns in Pirate101. Each account will be given a certain
amount of Crowns to spend, to help test the game and to have fun with. All Crowns from the Beta, and
all items purchased with Beta Crowns will be erased at the end of Beta.
48
Equipping Your Ship | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Crowns purchased in Wizard101 will not be useable in Pirate101 during Beta. Wizard101 and Pirate101
will use the SAME crowns after launch. For example, once Pirate101 launches and you buy 5000 crowns
and then spend 2000 of those crowns in Wizard101, the next time you log in to Pirate101 you will see a
remaining balance of 3000 crowns.
Be sure to check periodically for items that may be on sale! To do so, click the “On Sale” blue filter
button, as seen above, and you will be presented with all items currently on sale for a limited time.
If you only want to view items that are usable (restricted by level) for your particular character, click the
“Usable” button, as seen in the above screenshot.
You may also search for a particular item name by typing the name in the “Search for Items” box, as
seen above.
Be sure to check back often as new items will be added to the Crown Shop over time!

Paygates
If you’re buying your way through Pirate101 with Crowns, rather than playing with a subscription, you’ll
encounter Paygates in the world. They separate chapters into sections you can purchase individually.
Once you buy access to a Paygate, that access stays with that account even if you later get a subscription
and let the subscription expire.

“Realms” options work slightly differently than the other options. In Pirate101, your character is
automatically placed in a Realm and Area with an optimal population, so you won’t be surrounded by
too many or too few other players. For example, if you and a friend are both standing at the Life

Land Combat!
To enter land combat, approach a hostile creature. Hostile creatures have orange (more powerful than
you), gray (less powerful than you) or yellow (as powerful as you) names displayed above their heads.
Blue named characters are other players, and green named characters are friendly characters controlled
by the game.
When you enter combat, you’ll be joined by one or more Companions. The chance for each Companion
to join you is based on their order in the “My Companions” screen. (See “Companion Management”
information.) Of course, any Companion that is knocked out won’t join (See the section labeled “Defeat”
for more information about reviving your Companions.
Once engaged in combat, your camera moves to a top down view, a battle board will be displayed and
you will enter the Planning Phase.
Planning Phase
During the Planning Phase, you choose actions for your character and Companions.
Before executing your action, you can review information about characters and objects on the battle
board by mousing over their portraits. Each portrait represents a combatant, obstruction or an object
you can interact with or destroy. Items that are not under your control or cannot directly harm you will
have silver borders and appear not as bright, so that your units and your enemies are more obvious on
the board, as seen in the below screenshots:

Pirates and Companions under your control, collectively called “Units”, all have the same
combat color (blue, if you’re the first or only player in the combat). They are outlined in gold and
appear brighter than other players’ units or obstacles, so they stand out. Your units also appear
in the lower left corner. Although the game will automatically select the next unit when you
finish giving one a command, you can also click on one (either in the lower left or on the board)
if you change your mind. If you intentionally skip over a unit, the game notices that and won’t
auto-select it. If you move your mouse to click on the “Done” button, the game will warn – but
not stop – you if there are any units that still don’t have commands.
Other players’ Characters and Companions will all have colors unique to them (Player 2 is teal,
Player 3 is green, and Player 4 is dark green). They will be outlined in a silver border and will be
darker than your own units.
Your allies (units that help you, but you can’t control) have a dark yellow background and a
silver border and are also darker than your own units.
Inanimate objects all have a brown background and a silver border. Objects with a health bar
are breakable and can be destroyed.
Enemies always have a red background and a gold border.

Players can walk on any gray tile.
Your currently selected Units can move to any square that’s highlighted in blue. Their movement
is limited by their own movement range and any obstructions in their path. They can walk
through friendly participants, but they can’t walk through enemies or obstacles.
o Some Companions can jump or fly to bypass enemies or obstacles! They may see more
board square pathways than those that can only walk.
o Since opponents always turn to face their attackers, there are no bonuses to attacking
an enemy from the side or behind.
Melee units can attack any enemy located on or adjacent to a highlighted blue square. Ranged
units can often shoot farther than they can walk. When you mouse over an attackable enemy,
your cursor will change to either a fist (for a melee unit) or a bull’s-eye (for a ranged unit).
Melee units can walk to an attack in the same round, but Ranged units cannot (that’s the tradeoff for being able to attack from afar).
Some Units can cast Powers! Some Powers have beneficial effects on friendly targets, and other
Powers have negative effects on hostile targets. Not everyone starts with powers, but you can
train to get them. If your selected Unit has Powers, they will show up at the bottom of the
screen. You can review them by moving your mouse over them to get an informational pop-up.
To use a power, click on the power. A beneficial Power shows a green target reticule over allies
the Power can reach and a red target reticule for enemies the Power can affect. The Power may
also be able to affect an area, rather than a single unit—in that case you see green or red
colored squares that move around as you move your cursor. Click on a target to use the power.
NOTE: Some Powers are auto-casting. They don’t rely on you to tell them where to be used. A
self-heal Power is one such Power.
If you want to ask someone playing with you to target a specific spot, you can right-click on that
spot to “mark” that spot. A special mark will pulse—for about 3 seconds— on that tile, with your
combat color. That helps indicate what square you’re talking about. Each player can trigger their
own mark, so you can have up to 4 marks on the screen at a time.
If you mouse over another player’s unit, you can see what they’re going to do. If you mouse over
another player’s Character, you’ll see what all their units plan to do.

Planning Phase timer hits 0, all players will go into the execution phase even if they have not clicked on

If you decide that you’d rather not continue the battle, you can choose the red “Flee” button at the
bottom of the screen—but be careful! If you flee, you will suffer all of the consequences of a defeat! If
you flee from combat, you will be returned to the nearest Life Fountain and your Health will be reduced
to 1.

You may also notice that certain combat squares contain an eyeball in the bottom right corner of the
square. This is commonly referred to as LOS (line of sight). Any square that contains an eye ball will not
allow you to use a ranged attack in to that square normally due to something blocking the way. Example
below:

Execution Phase
After you and your friends have completed your actions in the Planning Phase, combat proceeds to the
Execution Phase, where all of the Units in combat play out their orders in turn. Once all your units
perform their commands, then enemies and then any allies (units that fight with you, but you don’t
control) get their turn!
75
Execution Phase | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Combat continues in turns until one side is defeated, or until the victory conditions are met. Note that
not all combats require you to defeat all your enemies! In fact, in some combats you need to pay close
attention to other (sneakier!) paths to victory. These Victory Conditions are displayed at the top of the
screen, during the Planning phase. Careful, if you don’t meet a certain victory condition that’s listed, you
could lose the combat.
Victory Conditions
Most battles are won by defeating all of your opponents on the Battle Board. Occasionally a combat
scenario will have different Victory Conditions for winning or losing, such as:
Defeat All Enemies—defeat all opponents on the Battle Board to win.
Use objects—interact with objects on the Battle Board. Using these objects will either count as a victory
or advance the current victory conditions. You can’t win until you do this, even if there are no enemies
left.
76
Execution Phase | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Protect an ally—keep the listed ally alive for the duration of the fight. Failing to do so will count as a
defeat.
Survive X Rounds—survive the listed number of combat rounds.
Defeat the King—defeat the listed Unit. It is important to note that you do not need to defeat any
minions. Combat ends as soon as the “King” is defeated.
Complete in X Turns—This Victory Condition will always only be present along with other Victory
Conditions. You must complete the other Victory Conditions within the listed number of Combat
Rounds; otherwise it will count as a defeat.
The victory conditions for a battle are displayed at the top of the Planning Phase view. Note that victory
conditions can change even during a battle, so be sure to check them between rounds.
Victory!
If you win combat, your enemies may drop treasure chests for you to loot! Run around the area and
press “X” to open each of the treasure chests before time runs out. During this time you’re
untouchable—no enemy will attack you and you’ll be transparent.
77
Victory! | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Each enemy you defeat in combat has a chance to drop some loot. If you want to see more treasure,
consider grouping with another player. Bigger combats will have more enemies to fight and you’ll earn
treasure faster.
If you decide to group with other players, don’t worry—everyone receives an equal share of the
treasure no matter who opens the treasure chest.
Blue and Red Yum Yum Fruit
Once combat has ended your health may need replenishing. You may have noticed little red flying fruit
buzzing around the land. These are referred to as “yum yum fruit.” All you need to do is walk up to one
of the flying red yum yums and you will automatically collect it which in turn will return some of your
health to you.
78

There are also blue yum yum fruit flying around the world. The blue yum yums replenish your mojo
potion bottle, which ultimately is used to revive fallen Companions.

Secret Treasure Chests!
Combat isn't the only way to get treasure in Pirate101. Keep your eyes peeled as you explore the islands
of the skyway. You may just find a Secret Treasure Chest tucked away somewhere. Any pirate can claim
the treasure in these chests. Just walk right up and hit the "x" key. First come, first served!
Defeat!
When you’re defeated in combat, you’ll be returned to the last Life Fountain you visited—unless you’re
currently in a group with other players. If all of your crewmates have been defeated as well, you’ll all
return to your own Life Fountains. However, if any crewmates are still alive, you’ll all stay where you are
to give them a chance to heal you, and bring you back into the fight!”
If any of your Companions have been defeated, you can use the Life Fountain to revive them. The Life
Fountain will also begin healing the player – while they

Your Ship
Early on in the game, you’ll earn your first ship. So, what can you do with it? Sail, of course! Skull Island
isn’t the only place in the game. Un-bottle your ship, sail between different islands…or eventually
different worlds. And there just may be the occasional battle, too!
Your first acquired ship will be a raft. To get a better ship, you’ll need to invest time in questing and to
participate in Broadside Combat.
Getting on/off Your Ship
When you un-bottle your ship, you’ll be teleported to it. When you dock your ship, you’ll still be on your
ship but there will be a deboarding sigil on the ship’s deck. Stand on the deboarding sigil and press “x” to
teleport to the nearby dock, as seen below:
81
Your Ship | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Once you appear on a dock, there will be a boarding sigil to get back to your ship, as seen below:
There are bound to be a lot of ships at the dock and we’ve made it easy for you to locate yours. When
your ship is docked, a dockside banner will be placed next to the boarding sigil adjacent to your ship.
The banner will have your chosen sail emblem on it.
82
Getting on/off Your Ship | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Note that you can visit other docked ships as a Visitor. So there may be sigils for other ships besides
yours, but the name of the ship will appear when you stand on the sigil and you’ll see their banner too.
Passengers can run around on a ship and ride along with the Ship until such time the ship enters a
private or restricted zone, at which point they will be kicked off and returned to their last Life Fountain.
Sailing your ship!
To start sailing your ship, find the sailing station sigil and press “x”. The sailing station sigil is located in
front of the ship’s wheel. (Visitors cannot activate this sigil), as seen below:
Once you interact with the sailing station sigil your ship will appear in the skyway. Steer the ship just like
you would your character, using the mouse buttons or the WASD keys. You’ll see a new interface item
on the lower right for ship sailing, which includes a speedometer.
83
Sailing your ship! | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
If you want to stop the ship, press the Spacebar to drop anchor. Press it again to raise anchor and get
underway again. But be careful not to drop anchor where enemies can attack you.
You can sail pretty much anywhere you want on the skyways between islands. You’ll want to be careful
because there are enemies out there too, but there is also a safe passage path. As you sail, you will see
various colored Windlanes. These are safe areas to travel in. Each Windlane flows in a direction and you
may actually boost your ship’s speed if you travel in the correct direction on them.
Many islands have docks where you can land. These areas are “No Wake” zones, so your ship will
automatically slow down as they approach them. If you can dock, you’ll get a prompt telling you so.
Note that you can also stop steering the boat by pressing the TAB key. Once you do, you’ll be able to run
around the ship with any of your crew. But letting your ship move without a pilot isn’t the safest plan
unless you’re in a Windlane.

Broadside Combat!
Ahoy there, Pirate! It's time to set your sails for adventures in the Skyways of the Spiral. Make no
mistake though, danger lurks outside every Windlane! You and your crew will meet blackguards aplenty
in the Skyway and when you do you need to take them on head first and cannons ablaze!
Enemy ships, just like enemy monsters on land, will have names that are gray, yellow or red. When you
approach these ships, you have the option to do some ship-to-ship combat, something we call
“Broadside Combat.”
Broadside Combat controls:

Clicking on a ship selects it as the current target.

The [ ] keys select the next valid target counter-clockwise and clockwise, respectively

Drop/raise anchor by pressing Spacebar

Hotkeys 1-4 activate powers, as does clicking on their buttons on the HUD

Toggle Boost on/off with Z, or by clicking on the Boost button on the HUD
To enter Broadside combat, approach an enemy ship. Once you are within range of an enemy ship,
hover the mouse icon over the enemy ship and left click the mouse. Once you left click on the ship, you
will see the enemy ship’s name appear at the top of the screen as seen below:
Once your ship is within range of the enemy ship your targeting reticule will change from grey to orange
to indicate you are within LONG RANGE. As you move within SHORT RANGE your reticle will change from
85
Broadside Combat! | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
orange to red. It is important to note that different cannons (and powers) have different accuracy and
damage ratings at each of these ranges.
When engaged in Broadside Combat, your ship’s speed range is slowed to a fraction of its normal
minimum and maximum speed, and your turning speed is increased to allow for sharper turning. Your
ship will also coast quickly to a stop any time a direction is not held. Holding backward will cause your
ship to move in reverse up to the same max speed as you can move forward. Holding left or right will
turn your ship on the spot, even if not moving.
Also, while engaged, your ship will auto-fire its default power at your current target and the target, as
seen below:
This mode is toggled on by firing any offensive power at a target, or being fired upon, whether the
attack hits or misses. If you have no target or are not in auto-fire mode, the attacking ship will be forceselected as your target. This mode is toggled off only when you are no longer in range of the ship you
last fired upon, the ship you last fired upon is invalid (in No Aggro mode or defeated), and no enemy
ship is currently targeting or chasing you.
If an enemy ship is not attackable (even when within range), the targeting reticule switches to a grey
cross out symbol, as seen below:
86
Broadside Combat! | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Multiple ships can fire on any target, but a target can only fire on ONE ship at any time (this is applicable
to all players and mob ships, alike). As you continue to attack the enemy, you will soon begin to see
smoke and fire rising from the enemy ship. This is a good indicator that the enemy ship is weakening and
deck side combat is about to begin, as seen below:
87
Broadside Combat! | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
The YELLOW HEALTH BAR is another indicator that an enemy ship can be boarded. This takes place
when the enemy ship is at 50% health. The same goes for player ships. At 50% health, the player ship
can be boarded! Once boarded, you will still have the option to flee battle, by clicking the FLEE button.
Should you decide to stick it out and continue to take on cannon fire from the enemy ship, you may
notice rotating objects on your ship. These are referred to as damage tokens. Damage tokens come in
many forms, such as fire. Damage tokens can be interacted with which will allow your crew to
“extinguish” them. Captains who are driving the ship are unable to extinguish the tokens unless they
stop driving the ship, but that can be dangerous and even more reason to have a crew! To extinguish a
damage token, run up to one and click “x” to interact, as seen below:
Each damage token that a player does not extinguish before deck side combat begins will result in that
effect being part of deck side combat. An example would be a fire damage token not being extinguished.
Any fire damage tokens that remain after broadside combat will later become a fire obstacle on the
battle board during deck side combat. Units standing near fire during this phase of combat will take
damage every round of combat. Screenshot examples below:
88
Broadside Combat! | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
There are other tokens that have different effects on the player – but you will have to discover these
through gameplay!
If you are unsuccessful escaping the clutches of an enemy ship and become defeated your ship will be
teleported back to the Captain’s previous dock with all passengers’ health reduced to 1.
89
Broadside Combat! | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
If you successfully destroy an enemy ship, Nautical XP is awarded, a loot crate is dropped in the skyway
and Quest credit is granted. A single loot crate is dropped per ship destroyed in Broadside Combat. Only
the captains of the attacking ships can pick up the loot crate. The crate can be picked up by approaching
and pressing “x” when prompted. If the crate is not picked up before its loot timer expires, it de-spawns.
When an enemy ship is destroyed in Broadside Combat, Quest and badge credit are granted for the
enemies that would have spawned on that ship. This credit is granted to each passenger on each ship
that attacked the enemy ship at least once, whether that attack hit or missed, so long as they are still
within the influence range (within sight) of the enemy ship when it was destroyed.
Fleeing from Broadside Combat
If you believe you are not yet ready to take on the enemy you have the option to flee from battle and
head for the nearest Windlane for safety.
Windlanes will increase the repair rate on ships, as seen below:
Ship Boost and Boost Fuel
As you attempt to escape the clutches of the enemy, you have the option to use boost fuel to hasten
your attempt. To activate, toggle the boost button by clicking or pressing “z”. To deactivate boost you
can press reverse (S), drop anchor (Spacebar), or toggle the boost button by clicking or pressing “z”.
While boost mode is active, fuel is consumed to rocket your ship forward at increased speed and
acceleration.
90
Fleeing from Broadside Combat | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Be sure to keep an eye on your boost fuel when using speed boost! On the bottom right of the screen
you will see a green globe with a number in it. That number reflects how much fuel is left for your ship,
as seen below:
To refill your boost fuel, visit a Fuel Shop vendor on a city dock. This is where you can purchase fuel for
your un-bottled ship. If you want to purchase fuel for other ships, you must bottle your current ship and
un-bottle the other ship.
91
Ship Boost and Boost Fuel | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Deck Side Combat!
Once either your ship or the enemy ship has been reduced to below 50% health, either ship can then be
boarded at which point deck side combat ensues. Depending on whose ship reduces below 50% first will
determine who attacks first in Deck Side combat. If the enemy boards you, they go first. If you board the
enemy, you go first.
Deck side combat plays very similarly to land combat in which there is a planning phase, an execution
phase and a victory phase. As stated in the “Broadside Combat” section, if there are any previous
damage tokens that have not been dispersed before deck side combat begins, those tokens will become
obstacles on the battle board.
Should you defeat your enemy in deck side combat you will have the opportunity to run around and
collect the spoils of war…treasure! Remember, if you decide to group with other players, don’t
worry—everyone receives an equal share of the treasure no matter who opens the treasure chest.
Should you lose to your enemy in deck side combat, your ship will sink and you will be returned to the
last visited life fountain. Your ship will be available once at the docks if it is unbottled.
Nautical Ranks
Each player has a Nautical Rank/Level (up to level 50), which they increase via Nautical XP gained from
destroying enemy ships in Broadside Combat. The amount of Nautical XP needed per Nautical Rank is
the same as normal XP needed per player level. Unlike player level, however, each player begins at
Nautical Rank 0, and increases to rank 1 with their first Broadside kill. This grants their first Nautical
Rank badge -the badge is replaced at regular Nautical Rank intervals, similar to the PvP and Gardening
badges in Wizard101.
Nautical XP is granted only to the captain of each ship that attacked the enemy ship. A single attack on
the enemy ship is all that is required, whether the attack hit or missed, though the player must be within
the influence range of the enemy ship (within sight) at the moment of its defeat to receive the Nautical
XP.
Unlike normal leveling, Nautical Rank can ONLY increase through engaging in Broadside Combat. As you
increase your nautical rank, higher end ship equipment will become available for you to purchase from a
ship vendor or from the Crown Shop.
Increasing your nautical rank is completely optional and is not required to complete the main storyline.
New ships will become available for players to purchase as they increase their class level, not nautical
level.
Broadside Combat Powers Purchasing
The first power in a player ship is the ship’s default power, fired repeatedly when in auto-fire mode.
Obtaining additional Broadside powers for use in combat are acquired by purchasing additional ship
equipment, as listed below:

Equipment Vendors
Please note, during Beta there won’t be a Bazaar/Auction House like Wizard has. We hope to add a
Bazaar sometime after the launch of Pirate101. Stay tuned to the Pirate101 website for future details!
As you play Pirate101 you'll acquire plenty of jewelry, clothing and equipment that will give your
character an edge in combat. Sometimes though, it's easier to just go shopping. Vendors can be found
both indoors and outdoors. Indoor vendors can be located by the shop signs that hang outside a
building, as seen below:

Sigils, Timers and Dungeon Exit Warnings
Some locations in Pirate101 can only be entered under certain circumstances. These locations are
marked by a semicircle of sigils. When a location is ready for access, the sigil will glow as seen below:
113
Sigils, Timers and Dungeon Exit Warnings | © KingsIsle Entertainment, Inc. All Rights
Reserved
Once the sigil begins to glow, walk up to it and press the 'x' key when prompted. There will be a ten
second countdown and then your character and any other players standing on the sigil (one player per
sigil) will enter the next location. Note: If other players near the sigil have not already completed the
quest or they are not on the same quest as you to cause the sigil to appear, they will not be able to see
or use the sigil.
Some sigiled locations are known as dungeons. This means that if you leave the location for longer than
30 minutes your character will have to start from the beginning when you re-enter. When you enter and
leave a dungeon you will receive a message telling you how long the dungeon takes to play along with
warning you upon exit that you must re-enter within 30 minutes to pick up where you left off as seen
below:

In summary:
 Once you get a quest that requires using the sigil, it will appear and glow.
 As long as the goal to use the sigil hasn’t been completed, the sigil will continue to glow.
 Once you complete the goal, the sigil will still be visible (and stay visible) but will no longer glow
– but you can still use it to repeat the adventure, if you want to.
In Pirate, seeing a sigil means
(a) Glowing – an active quest location.
(b) Not glowing – you’ve already been inside and completed the goal inside. You can go back in, to
re-participate in the content.
