Transforming Lives Through Tennis 2014 A YEAR IN REVIEW SERVICE…... Dear Friends and Supporters, SPUT has successfully ushered in its’ 25th year of providing lifelong tennis, learning and leadership skills to children in every neighborhood of Saint Paul. Over the past quarter century, by working together, we have grown our participants tenfold and delivered the fun and joy of tennis to over 45,000 youth living in Saint Paul. The SPUT SPIRIT - Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Responsibility, Imagination and Teamwork continues to be planted in every neighborhood in the city. SPUT remains dedicated to our core mission of teaching tennis and life skills to all youth regardless of their ability to pay. In 2014 we provided nearly $150,000 in scholarships. SPUT brings tennis to children at sites just a short walk or bike ride from their homes. In 2014 we delivered our programs at over 30 sites throughout Saint Paul. Since 2012 we have been expanding our programing to children on a year round basis. In addition to our summer reading program we developed our Warrior Leadership Program for our teens. During the 2014-2015 school year SPUT worked in partnership with Saint Paul Public Schools by providing the ACE after school curriculum. In the spring of 2015, we moved into our new headquarters at the Griggs Recreation Center in the Midway-Como neighborhood in St. Paul. We are very happy to have, for the first time, a first class facility that provides ample office space, storage for our equipment, indoor recreational space for rainy days and a good-sized meeting and training space. Griggs also provides a home for our SPUT Store where children redeem the SPUT Bucks they earn through participation in our program. Our new facility is managed under a lease agreement with the City of Saint Paul and we are grateful for the opportunity that this new space affords SPUT. We invite each of our donors to visit us in our new home. The mother of one child recently shared her feelings about SPUT by saying: “We feel fortunate to be part of SPUT…the coaches teach skills and pull hard work out of our kids…they’re so positive.” One of our coaches, Mary Stoner, reminds us that “Tennis mirrors life… the entire sport is an exercise in handling pressure, communication, problemsolving and resiliency.“ With your continued help, SPUT is ready to embark on our next 25 years of service. We are so proud of our programs and our kids… we know you are too. Thanks for all your help! Sincerely, Jack Van de North, President MISSION Use tennis as a vehicle for creating positive change in the lives of kids. VISION Kids of all backgrounds will be active and engaged at accessible sites across Saint Paul; playing, learning and growing together to support one another and their community . VALUES Character Development - We model and teach the following life skills, better known as the SPUT SPIRIT - Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Responsibility, Imagination and Teamwork. Health & Wellness - Tennis is a lifetime sport that promotes physical fitness. We also incorporate nutrition and sun safety as part of our ongoing effort to produce healthy kids and families. Diversity & Inclusion - Saint Paul is the most diverse community in all of Minnesota and we intentionally invite and welcome youth of all backgrounds to the courts. Literacy - ABCs and 123s are essential academic tools needed for success in life. Through our reading program and SPUT Store, we emphasize reading comprehension and financial literacy. ….PERSEVERANCE INTEGRITY…... KEY PROGRAMS Warrior Leadership Academy Launched in 2013, this program provides 7th - 12th grade SPPS students a chance to develop as leaders on and off the tennis court through weekly tennis drills and quarterly leadership retreats on financial literacy, career readiness, and study skills. The academy is free and targets St. Paul youth living in poverty. Summer Reading Program The reading program is provided weekly for ages 5-10 years. We provide books and reading volunteers to facilitate group story time; engaging kids in reading and giving everyone a chance to read aloud preventing summer learning loss. Kids are encouraged to log reading hours with their local St. Paul Public Libraries. Tennis Anywhere Outreach Program We partner with organizations that serve youth across the city to bring our tennis to them. No courts - no problem! We organize tennis anywhere a ball bounces: parking lots, dirt fields and even dead-end streets. In 2014 we offered a new tennis & education program, called A.C.E. – academics, character, excellence - in collaboration with Riverview, Cherokee Heights, Battle Creek and Highwood Hills Elementary Schools. Summer Tennis & Life Lessons Our foundational programming ran every weekday at 30 court locations across the city. No matter where you live in St. Paul, there is guaranteed to be a site offering SPUT lessons within walking distance. PROGRAM STATISTICS Our core Summer Lesson Program served 1522 kids at 30 sites. In addition, we served 894 kids through SPUT’s summer outreach programs. 2014 Winter, Spring and Fall programs during our off season attracted 227 kids at 10 locations. In total, we worked with 2628 kids in 2014! This does not include the participation in events like Rondo Days, Cinco de Mayo, school fairs and clinics. During the past 25 years SPUT has served over 45,000 youth of all ages in St. Paul. THE KIDS WE SERVE In one of MN’s largest school districts, Saint Paul Public Schools, 73% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The annual fulfillment of SPUT’s commitment to bring tennis and the SPUT SIRIT to underserved youth throughout Saint Paul was made wholly possible by each of our 520 donors who generously supported our work with money, services and goods. Each one of our donors played a role in ensuring that in 2014 SPUT had the financial resources to provide $150,000 in financial assistance scholarships to St. Paul’s low income communities’ children and youth. We can proudly claim that no child was turned away because of their family’s inability to pay. A hearty shout out to each of our donors for their faith in and support of SPUT. Each donor made a difference in the lives of over 2500 youngsters. 2014 STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION SPUT SPIRIT…... Dear Friends and Supporters, It is an honor to lead Saint Paul Urban Tennis at this pivotal time in our history. Two and a half decades of diligent and creative work have positioned our organization on the threshold for an exponential leap. SPUT has an outstanding history of service throughout the neighborhoods of Saint Paul. In 25 years, we have made a positive difference in the lives of over 45,000 youth! However, since 2007, our annual participation numbers plateau at about 3,000. On its own, this is an impressive number of service to the community but when we measure our achievement in the context of student enrollment in both public and private schools, we notice that SPUT is reaching less than 6% of our city’s 59,000 youth student population. In 2014, SPUT undertook the expansion of its programs to several Saint Paul public schools as an ACE afterschool activities provider. Our tennis and life skills programs were well received by youth and we will be adding more school sites during the 2015/16 school year. We’ve taken a collaborative approach to serving more kids with high quality programming which has led to several new partnerships, most notably with Sprockets: a network of out of school time youth activity providers in Saint Paul. Sprockets measures the effectiveness of our field as a whole and works to improve youth outcomes. We began as a data provider with Sprockets in 2013 and moved into an Activator role when selected to participate in their Summer Learning Program Quality Intervention Pilot. Our ongoing work on program quality improvement has also led to a partnership with TENICITY: a software program aimed specifically at improving tennis player development that will also allow us to capture youth outcomes related to our life skills, reading, and sun safety programs. Both of these partnerships afford SPUT additional tools, training and resources for increasing our delivery of high value outcomes to youth whose families are economically challenged. The prospect for SPUT’s future is exciting. With our new home at Griggs Recreation Center, the addition of an energetic Development Manager and the strong leadership of our Board of Directors, we are well prepared to undertake substantive increases to our service delivery without compromising the quality of our programing. For our organizational growth, we are grateful to have the support of the USTA Foundation through their Capacity Building Program for National Junior Tennis and Learning Chapters and to be a partner in the Urban Youth Tennis & Education Campaign led by Youthprise and USTA Northern. In 2015 we will be working to secure funding for a full time position of Program Director and two positions for Community Youth Advocates. These additional positions will enable SPUT to continue to improve program quality and reach further into underserved communities of low income families. We welcome your continued support and involvement in SPUT. Together we can double the number of youth reached and engaged with SPUT, living the SPIRIT of Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Responsibility, Imagination and Teamwork.
