After years arguing about whether to include contemporary music (that is, anything written within the past 30 years), Aug8 decided to set an example for the US Congress by compromising. We’ll present Bill Cline’s “Rat Pack Medley,” Tom Bulleit’s “Disney Dreams,” which is a medley of favorite Disney songs covering more than 50 years, and a mashup of “Gone Gone Gone” by Phillip Phillips and the “cup song” from Pitch Perfect by Anna Kendrick. And, after years of envying everyone else’s Oak Thorne arrangements, we finally got up the nerve to ask him to arrange for us. The result: a beautiful and haunting “Here's That Rainy Day.” In February, we held our our 24th annual concert, “Sing Out for Shelter,” to raise money for charities that support the homeless in Washington, DC. We’re proud to have raised well over $250,000 since the start of this series! And, like everyone else, we’re watching the run up to the 2016 national election and wondering if we’ll apply for next year’s Spring Sing from Canada. While we’ve reduced our average group age with two new members, some of us have had to get up to speed on 21st century grammar and reclaiming the English language. In the late summer we drafted a second soprano from an outdoor gig on a hospital rooftop. Francine is the mother of triplet teenage boys- she was looking for an escape. In January we inducted another second soprano from a high school reunion. Carrie comes with her own cadre of resources: discount wine, artistry, computer skills and quick learning. In February, we “lost” Annie to a new job in Chicago but she is a loyalist- commuting by car, bike, train, Skype and mental telepathy. As for the rest of us, Noteworthy continues to count its blessings. We keep singing around town, surprising ourselves as well as our audiences. This year in particular, we unconsciously reached for higher heights with the encouragement of amazing musical coaches and arrangers. And of course, each Tuesday night we strengthen our sisterhood, compliments of chardonnay, chocolate, couch therapy and ear training. www.noteworthysings.com, www.facebook.com/noteworthysings 2 C ahoots About Time Soloists: Everybody Music and Lyrics bySy Mann, Joni Mitchell, Pete Seeger & Book of Ecclesiastes, Bonnie Raitt, Jim Croce, George Harrison Arr. by (Sy Mann), George Bassett I Saw a Stranger with Your Hair Soloist: David Music and Lyrics by John Gorka Arr. by George Bassett Gulf War Song Music and Lyrics and Arr. by Moxie Früvous Paul Soloist: Patty Music and Lyrics and Arr. by Michael Greenstein You Were on My Mind Music and Lyrics by Sylvia Fricker Arr. by We Five, adapt. George Bassett S: Patty Sly Chamberlain A: Nancy Wilson T-B: George Bassett B: David Chamberlain For those new to Spring Sing: Cahoots, a bit of an enigma, is both the organization’s only quartet and the only group audacious enough to live in three different states— outside Rochester, New Haven, and Trenton. No, despite their suspiciously similar last names, Patty and David aren’t married or related, though David quite likely is a distant cousin of Patty’s husband, V. B. And no, Nancy and George, despite their undeniably dissimilar last names, are not unmarried to each other. A major achievement this year: persuading Ma Nature not to force cancelation of any of the group’s seven monthly rehearsals. Another: the group’s 20th or so concert for the benefit of Princeton Friends School, cofounded by Nancy in 1987. Cahoots is pleased indeed to help Spring Sing bring harmony—for at least one weekend—to Washington, DC. 3 J ersey Transit The Chain Music and Lyrics by Fleetwood, McVie, Nicks, Buckingham Arr. by Nicole E. Coelho (Music Director), Amanda Lettiere, Laura McMillan A: Landis Eaton, Kim Elaine Neighbor, Andrea Schwartz T: Steve Maria, Victor Medina, Adam Nichols B: Lee Gunderson, Matt Lohr, Howie Rosen Jersey Transit is thrilled to be back in our Nation’s Capital, and during a Presidential election year, to boot! Between rehearsing, gigging, having more babies and putting together our paperwork for our Canadian emigration (to occur on January 20, 2017), it’s been a busy, hectic time. Nicole is still our Music Director and Fitness Ambassador, but for some reason can’t get the group to start rehearsals with 100 push-ups. Victor remains our President and is so good at it that if the Canada thing doesn’t work out we’re going to write him in on the ballot in November. Adam became a dad for the third time, which explains the slightly panicked look on his face. Andrea, Kim and Amanda formed AKA LLC, a vaguely sinister choreography company that uses threats of embarrassing costumes if we mess up our dance moves. Howie continues to break frequent flier mile records with his travels; he’s aiming for a moon trip on Richard Branson’s space shuttle. Landy is keeping us honest as our recording secretary, and her literal pen proves pens still exist. Laura is back this year but don’t blink or you’ll miss her—she has to race in and out because she actually has a life outside JT. Steve is still managing our finances and we’re going to be audited by the IRS this year. Matt has spent over a year with us and still wants to be in the group, which tells you something about basses and intelligence. Lee adopted a dog and is making steady progress towards achieving a Man Bun. Thanks to Augmented 8 for hosting this year. We are excited to be in the nation’s capital once again. Since we took a sabbatical in 2008, it has been 17 years since the group has performed at a Spring Sing in DC. A few of us could not make this trip because of work, or kid’s/grandkids graduations, but we still bring a strong contingent who look forward to reuniting with our a cappella friends. www.thegrunyons.com, https://www.facebook.com/The-Grunyons-75099948193/?fref=ts, www.youtube.com/user/Grunyons/videos, 5 C ounterparts Sugar Sugar Music and Lyrics by The Archies Arr. by Julie Stimmler Lopes Teach Your Children Music and Lyrics by Graham Nash Arr. by Philip Lawson One Hundred Easy Ways to Lose a Man Soloist: Jeannette Osmon Music and Lyrics from Wonderful Town by L. We were surprised, shocked and saddened when Len Karabell announced his retirement from the Counterparts after Spring Sing 58 in Boulder. But we still had two tenors and a tenor/baritone, so no worries! Then Jack Csaklos retired in October! Oh no!! One tenor and a tenor/baritone and two bass. We would recruit to fill out the ranks. But then, in February, Phil was forced into early retirement due to health issues!! Could we participate in Spring Sing with only one tenor?? Probably not. Thankfully, to the rescue, Scott Watson, a former Aug8 himself and now firmly entrenched in Philadelphia’s Orpheus Club, found us Ton Tsai. Tony agreed to join us for Spring Sing. Scott, then feeling the pangs of nostalgia, decided to play hooky from the Orpheus spring concert to augment our tenor section! Lindsay DuBarry is on ‘sabbatical’ (Long overdue) to enjoy a significant school reunion which she is hosting! So, while rebuilding, we are delighted to be singing at Spring Sing 59! www.thecounterparts.com 6 E llacappella America, the Beautiful Music by Samuel A. Last summer, Ella was invited to participate in the celebration of that history. The replication of the French frigate L’Hermione, which carried the Marquis de Lafayette to America in 1780, retraced it’s original voyage up the eastern seaboard, ending in the port of Castine, Maine. Immediately following Spring Sing 58, Ella began learning songs from the American Revolutionary War era, in addition to French and nautically themed songs. We performed dockside on July 15, 2015 in the shadow of that majestic ship, leaving us all with an unforgettable memory! Did you know that there are eight verses to Yankee Doodle? We sure didn’t! It turns out that most late 18th century songs have enumerable verses. (Lessons learned!) In other news, Ellacappella lost not one, but two sopranos in 2015. Our darling Sabrina Rose decided to pursue a teaching degree and to devote her time to musical theater. Our irreplaceable codirector, Jessica Booth, made the decision to spend more time with her young children. We miss them both! Left with nine members and only one first soprano, our Spring Sing 59 prospects looked bleak. In late March, Ashley Terwilliger joined Ella, perfectly complementing our veteran soprano, Lisa Lesko, with her clear, bell-like voice. She has learned all eight songs in ten weeks! We are so very thankful! A word of NOTE: we are now 30% redheaded! Look out! www.Facebook.com/ellacappella 7 N ew Wizard Oil Combination Old Me Better Soloist: Doug Haley Music and Lyrics by Keb’ Mo’ Arr. by Doug Haley Colder Weather Soloist: Craig Biesterfield Music and Lyrics by Zac Brown, Wyatt Durrette, Coy Bowles, Levi Lowrey Arr. by James McHugh Ain’t No Sunshine Soloist: Alan Welty Music and Lyrics by Bill Withers Arr. by Doug Haley That’s the Way of the World Soloist: David Lonowski, Features: John Farmer, Doug Haley, Sam Stott Music and Lyrics by Maurice White, Verdine White, Charles Stepney Arr. by John Farmer Higher Love Soloist: Michael Duran Music and Lyrics by Steve Winwood, Will Jennings Arr. by Stephen Ross TI: Allen Rogers, David Lonowski (new) TII: Michael Duran, Jack Miller, Jim Keller, Mark Klenk (new) BI: John Farmer, Doug Haley, Sam Stott BII: Stick Ware, Alan Welty, Craig Biesterfeld, David Barnes 2015 /2016 has been a big year for the Wizards. We have lost a few members to job opportunities, some of which were in other states. We have gained two new members, Mark Klenk, who we rescued from the Barbershop world and David Lonowski who is another music teacher (that makes 3). Mark brings a lot of talent and enthusiasm to the group, not to mention helping enormously with new technology and David is a great soloist, reads music easily and is still young enough to be able to hit those high notes. We have continued to perform regularly and have found ourselves providing support to some new charities. www.wizardoil.org, www.facebook.com/New-Wizard-Oil-Combination-200010252268/?fref=ts 8 L ake Shore Jive All I Want for Christmas Soloist: Melissa Shubalis Moulden Music and Lyrics by Mariah Carey Arr. by GH Holocene Soloist: Emily Dillingham Music and Lyrics by Bon Iver Arr. by Saumitra Sahi September Soloist: Chris Meister Music and Lyrics by Earth Wind & Fire Arr. by O. For those keeping count, Lake Shore Jive turned 21 this year! Hooray, we're finally legal to drink at these events! (Well, maybe not Saumit.) We are super excited to be a part of this year's fabulous Spring Sing in DC and are looking forward to hosting next year's weekend extravaganza... in... (wait for it...) LSJ has made it our collective mission to prove that the perfect mix of lawyers, teachers, musicians, designers, consultants, and baton-twirling ninjas can produce some pretty kickass harmony and the occasional dance routine. Not enough to quit our day jobs… yet. (Still waiting…) This year, you'll hear a variety of awesome arrangements from several of our members, both current and old. (That’s not an age joke... Those are reserved for Jason Sperling). You’ll also see multiple folks directing said songs. The best part of having so many uber-talented arrangers and musicians in Jive (aside from Melissa’s joy that she can relaaaax and be the proud mama hen)… is the flexibility it allows us to perform a wide range of music, showcasing both our singing abilities and our lovely arranging skills. (And, lest we neglect our many other talents – did we mention our new gal Michelle is an aspiring yogi?) Still waiting? Good. You'll just have to wait ‘til our presentation at the end of our set. :) http://www.lakeshorejive.com 9 Saturday Singing Schedule at a Glance National Museum of the American Indian, Fourth Street & Independence Ave., S.W.
